stretchie added a topic in MK808Living with the MK808, 4 months onFollowing my initial post when I got it:
As a follow up and lessons learnt I thought I'd put up how I'm getting on with the MK808.
I am very happy with it and use it alot.
On first useages I found this to be a good tool but it was very frustrating because there was no way to turn it off without just unplugging it, and I didn't want to leave it plugged in all the time. This abrupt powering off casued it to loose all settings and return to factory standards nearly everytime. I got around this by downloading Titanium X backup and restoring it that way each time I powered it up but that was a pain in the ass and I stopped using the MK808 altogether. I did keep googling to see if I could find a fix and when it came up around Christmas I upgraded to a new ROM, Finless 1.5 and this made it instantly useable again, Bob, you sir are a genius. There is a 'reboot' program which you can use to shut the device down before unplugging it and it has not once returned to factory standards or lost settings ever again since.
The biggest complaint about the unit seems to be the WiFi signal, if you are reading this I'm sure you already know the pain of low signals or of it dropping the signal on a regular basis making it nearly impossible to use for long periods of time. It seems that where the wires from the antenna are soldered to the board they have shorted it out on the ground. I have had the problems myself but have no personal experience of opening the unit up but there are plenty of 'how to guides' for removing the antenna ground wires and also removing a resistor to fix it properly.
Having said this, the combination of updating to Finless 1.5 and also using the 'inSSIDer' Android app on my phone and walking around my house monitoring the WiFi signal led me to change the channel on my router to Channel 11 has made a vast improvement, I've not had a single drop of signal, it's still only on half the bars but I can stream full films using Netflix and carry on using without any issues whatso ever.
I have ditched the Lenovo N5901 remote that was part of the package, it's just not usable in my opinion, it registers many repeat key presses even when you have had a single positive click, other times it misses several words that you've just typed and the trackball is terrible, it helps if you hold it upside down, I think it just doesn't contact the rollers (or whatever) on the inside.
To control the unit I now have a powered USB hub which I have next to the TV and have a wired mouse and keyboard pluged in to it, I think there is just no substitute for a standard kayboard and mouse, they just work all the time, everytime.
I also purchased 'Droidmote' from the app store, you install the 'server' on the MK808 and the client on the device that you want to use to control the MK808 and when it works it is flawless, it's just a shame that I have to mess around for around 10 minutes just trying to connect over and over again until it does, but once connected it doesn't time out or drop signal like other similar things I have tried. My problem with Droidmote is is keeps coming up saying 'Server is unreachable' which their forum says is a problem with your kit, however it does connect in the end so it can't be a problem with the kit can it if it does work in the end? I did post on the droidmote forum, but they replied saying to try things, I replied to say I have just tried all their listed advice but it still doesn't work and I got a rude e-mail saying my post was not allowed for some reason. It is a shame, it really is a great solution it just takes me alot of messing around and I've tried it on Desire HD with both standard and custom ROMs and on Nexus 7 with both standard and customs ROMs but with exactly the same results.
Also, I have attached a webcam, Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000. I can use the camera for video calls on Google + and on Skype and I downloaded a Camera app and can capture video but it will not take photo's, whenever I try to take a photo is just force closes.
So after 4 months what is my take on the MK808? It's a great bit of kit, I'd recommend it to anyone, make sure you get the 'big' power supply, get a powered USB hub and upgrade the Rom to at least Finless 1.5, there is a more current version of Finless but I'm happy with mine as it is, if you are having WiFi issues then try changing the channel of your router if that doesn't work then get your soldering iron out and do some googling for the instructions. It will DLNA no problem if you have anything you want to play files from. For me that's it, for me it's much better than buying a basic 'silent PC'. I just want something I can surf the internet on, watch YouTube and Netflix.

stretchie added a topic in MK808Just got my MK808Hi all
I ordered my MK808 two weeks ago from here:
and it was waiting here for me when I got home yesterday.
I'm enjoying it so far but it is not without it's faults. I got it hooked up to the TV and booted it straight up, no surprises here, typical Android so easy to get around and add the all important google account and then start installing your apps.
Along with the bundle I also bought a usb hub, a quid or so and looks like a man with a smiley face, the casing fell apart as I was plugging my wired keyboard and mouse into it, the wires were fine so I pressed it back together and carried on, but there was a reason it was cheap. it's not well made and it kept dropping out every few minutes, the power led was still on at the hub but both the keyboard and mouse stopped working. If left for a minute they would come back to life but it was not f for purpose soplugged in the wireless Lenovo controller that came in the bundle, and that is what I am using to type this.I have ordered a powered USB hub so hoping that might prove to be more reliable, although I wouldn't think a standard dell keyboard and mouse would have a massive power consumption.
I can confirm that the WiFi ignal is less than great, a Desire HD, Sensation, Nexus 7 and two different laptops all get full bars in the same place that this gets a single bar. I can also confirm that it is nothing to do with the wireless controller as it had the same signal strength with just the wired keyboard and mouse.
That being said, I tried the YouTube app, very nice and watched the HD trailer for Iron Man 3 which looked great on the 1080p tv it is attached to. This gave me false hope though, I was hoping this may replace my set top box, I understand that it is more fiddly but either way I'd end up with a silent pc attached to my tv so worth the punt I thought.
I downloaded CatchUp TV, BBC iPayer and ITV player and there is no way they can replace a set top box, please tell me if I am doing it wrong but the picture quality is quite pixelated so we will be using an out of date sky box as a freesat receiver for normal tv.
BBC iPlayer is currently the biggest let down, again please tell me if I am doing something wrong, all it does is open the webbrowser and plays through that, and the picture doesn't even cover a quarter of the screen. I first tried the iPlayer apk I used for my Nexus 7 because iPlayer wasn't supported due to the flash and jellybean issue but when all I got was the browser and then when I played something I got the timelapse bar at the bottom of the screen at full width pt the actual content was only in the upper left corner. I tried downloading iPlayer and the new bbc media player from the play store but that is the same, which is a shame, on the Nexus it is an actual app and not a link into the web browser.
The Lenovo remote is not bad, it worked instantly but is plagued by repeated keys as you are typing you HAVE to look at the screen after every word, it has taken ages to type this but you get to a point where you have invested that much time and effort that you refuse to be beaten by a bbbit of clicky plastic. You will find many examples of missed words that didn't appear on the screen. lots of spaces between words that are about 10 spaces long instead of just 1 and sentances like "Allll IIIIIIIIIIII want to do is tyyyyyyyyyype a couple ofwooooooooords"

stretchie added a topic in Typhoon & Variants - Typhoon.MoDaCo.comIdea for BT file receivingI have done a search and cannot find the answer to this question...
I have no problems sending or receiving files, EXCEPT that the internal memory is too small... After I got a smart phone, I convinced some others at work to get one too, sending pictures and songs to each other is fine but what about BIG files...
When I say big, I don't mean 15mb, I don't mean 50mb, I'm talking for example 100 - 200mb. I put the film Collateral on my phone and BT'd it to a PC at work (took a while I can tell you), but it worked.
Is there anyway the reg or whatever can be edited on the phone to tell it to receive file to a dedicated folder on you memory card??
You could tell the phone to receive to 'storage card\Received by BT' for example. This would be GREAT. ANY IDEAS

stretchie added a topic in Typhoon & Variants - Typhoon.MoDaCo.comMaking apps\being usefulHi
I would like to get to grips with the kind of things you are doing here. I have had a a C500 for a couple of months now and love it, but that is not enough, I want more, I want to be able to create my own apps and learn how to look at the ROMS and understand what they mean and how to change them to my own specifications so that I may improve my phone and share any good findings with like minded people on this site.
Please can anyone point me in the right direction or at least suggest a path I could follow.
i.e. Should I start by learning how to create home screens using XML and once this is more or less handled what should I try next?
I have seen tools on other websites that people use to look at/tweak the registry files. Should I be scared of experimenting with them for fear of killing my phone or if I had a go at this and made a complete hash of it could I simply reload my default ROM (Orange 220.127.116.11) and start again?
What tips can anyone give a complete starter with a desire to learn and ideas to experiment with?
Thank you in advance
