They're the two hottest devices at the moment... the HTC Diamond and the Samsung i900... and the chaps over at GSMArena have managed to get their hands on one of each and put them head to head!

As they say...

"It's PocketPC playoffs and HTC are giving Samsung a match at the GSM Arena. With two of the stars of the season arriving in our office all at once, we thought it's a heck of an opportunity for some Diamond-Omnia-Diamond-Omnia-Diamond-Omnia game-set-match with a pinch of iPhone flavor. We got two aces up to the challenge, so sit back and stretch out. Ah well, get that six-pack too and join us for the kick-off. ".

Heck, it's Friday, bring on the beer biggrin.gif

The article is well worth a read and is exceptionally thorough, running to 9 pages! I'm gonna post the conclusion here, because reading it doesn't negate the value of reading the full article.

QUOTE
Well, it's the final whistle in our head-to-head. Tempted as we are to not leave it a tie and send it to a penalty shootout, we just have to pay due respect to both contenders. After all it's not the score that makes the game exciting. Sometimes a draw can be as interesting to watch, and this one here sure ain't goalless.

Anyway, it's nearly impossible to give a conclusive judgment as to which of these two fine PocketPCs deserves your money better. The Samsung i900 Omnia and the HTC Touch Diamond are both excellent choices with their own set of advantages and shortcomings. The good thing is they hardly overlap, so getting your priorities right is all you need to make the right choice.

You can certainly get the short version of their virtues at the beginning of this review, we won't be repeating all of those here.

The main point to make here is that there isn't a perfect device that's got it all for all consumer groups even in this high-end segment. Instead, when you go after one of these extra sweet devices you should carefully weigh your priorities and pick the one that covers most of them.

iPhone 3G is still to see a reality check, but it's almost sure that these two can give the latest Apple device a good fight. Maybe they still can't challenge the iPhone interface, but they are finally getting closer.

With HTC Touch Diamond and Samsung i900 Omnia, Windows Mobile handsets no longer seem chubby and nerdy. The next generation of PocketPCs match style with the best performance in their class.

Thought this head to head was going to make your choice easier? Perhaps not! biggrin.gif

It could be just a vicious rumour, but our spies in the field are reporting that the country is about to be invaded by subtly-Orange branded HTC Diamonds and T-Mobile MDA Compact IV's this coming weekend!

Be vigilant people, and please do report any sightings here in this topic as quickly as possible.

Remember - don't have nightmares! biggrin.gif

Astraware, friends of MoDaCo and purveyors of fine quality Windows Mobile games, are offering their 'Big Box of Blox' game (usually $10) to existing and new Club Astraware users for the month of July!

"Big Box of Blox is a block stacking game taken to outrageous extremes! Using stylus or button controls, arrange the three-blox-high stacks as they fall. Match blox in groups of three or more, vertically or horizontally, to eliminate them - but that's not all!

Don't just stack the blox. Smash them, blast them, mutate them or explode them in a shower of flames! Use special blox including jokers, bombs, frogs, mushrooms, fireballs and slot machines to clear the board before it reaches the top!"

It's slick, it's fun, it's FREE (for both Pocket PC and Smartphone (as well as Palm and S60)). Not only that, if you head over to http://www.digital-eel.com, you can get Mac and PC versions free too! Phew!

All you need to do to get your free copy is to sign up for a Club Astraware account, which is free in itself and brings the following benefits...
  • Earn a point for every cent you spend
  • Easy to sign up - it takes just a couple of minutes and it's free!
  • Get 2500 points for joining - that's $2.50 to spend instantly!
  • Regular exclusive Club discounts and double points offers
  • Points can be used as part payment for any Astraware game
  • Subscribe to our newsletters featuring exclusive discounts
  • Manage your registrations - get code reminders and transfer them if you change devices.
What are you waiting for? Head on over and let us know what you think of the game! biggrin.gif

P

PS If you DON'T want to sign up to Club Astraware and get the game free, you can still buy it for $10 as normal smile.gif

Orange muppets, what a weak argument! It clearly should be replaced since part of it - the stylus - is unusable!

PDAhut have just updated their site with a HUGE number of Diamond accessories, and they've sent me a few items over to have a look at as well smile.gif

The items are pictured below and include a Dock (less pretty than the HTC one but a third of the price!), a screen protector, a Y-Cable (this should be in the box IMHO as a must have!) and a pouch case.

Any questions, hit me up! smile.gif

P

Dock (£9.99)...

Screen Protector (£6.99) + Y cable (£9.99)...

Pouch case (£13.95, various colours available)...

It's not flawless yet, particularly the non working WiFi (with the shipped card), but it's pretty damn sweet! biggrin.gif

Bargain:

To do:

- Get WiFi sorted
- Work out if I can swap the alt and windows physical keys on the keyboard to match the mac layout
- Work out if I can remove the advent logo from the lid wink.gif

smile.gif

Will post more tomorrow, but I now have OSX on my Advent Wind tongue.gif

Working:

- 10.5.4 Vanilla Kernel
- Accelerated graphics
- Ethernet
- Webcam
- USB
- Card reader
- Sleep
- Bluetooth

Not working:

- Wifi (working on this)

I had WiFi working great with the Broadcom card from my wife's laptop, but she didn't see the funny side of me 'borrowing' it biggrin.gif I've ordered a dell broadcom based card on eBay for 12.99, but would prefer to get the inbuilt WiFi working.

I have upgraded to 2GB RAM and 160GB HDD (same model line as the original). There is NO warranty sticker on the Advent, and i've also updated to the latest (MSI!) BIOS.

Once WiFi is working, this is gonna be one sweet little portable OSX machine! Looking forward to the 6 cell battery tho biggrin.gif

Will definitely get a 6 cell when available.

Thankfully the Advent is black underneath, so the standard black 6 cell should look fine!
