Hi

Here's my 2 cents starting with some back history. Ive been a long running windows mobile fan, but only of smartphones, not pocketpcs. My wife has had a pocket pc for years that Ive used on and off and hated it. I always found PPCs are no good as phones, I just want to start dialing and get someones number not have to press the call button then use the fiddly on screen keyboard. An trying to read text messages and alerts without getting the stylus out has always been a joke.

Anyway due to the fact there are no wm smartphones with a GPS (kinda need that for developing) I went for the i780 hoping I could put up with the stylus as it had a keboard at least. I can say without a doubt the fingermouse is the saving grace of this phone for me. I've had it 3 months and cant even remember where the stylus is I use it so infrequently. For those of you who are happy using the touchscreen Im amazed, I find you have to press much harder than other PPCs and of course as the screen is smaller getting at small buttons in applications would be a nightmare for me.

Being able to single handedly use the PPC without ever using the stylus but with great precision is why I love this phone, for those of you who hate the fingermouse give it a few days and turn the sensitivity up so you are not continously scrolling across the pad. I would seriously reconsider buying another PPC without a fingermouse in future

Hi,
just found this - looks good.
Is development still ongoing ?
What would be a really useful feature is the ability to see the distance you have travelled.
thx

Development is on hold for a bit while I finish some other projects. The problems people experience are becuase of the different bluetooth stacks available on phones and gpsr. Im looking at using a commercial component to handle the bluetooth comunication but of course that costs money.

Is this a project people would be willing to pay for, Im not sure?

Im sure Ill get some time next year to get it going again and hopefully integrate some geocaching functionaility

No, infact not on any of the smartphones. As the compact framework in in the ROM you cannot install new versions, you have to wait for the operator to release one with it in.

Even windowsmobile2005 doesn't have it in yet as the CF 2.0 is still not released its only in beta.

This has to be, from a developer point of view, one of the most annoying things about smartphones.

Just the software I was after..Now if I could just get it to work!  biggrin.gif

Im using an E200 with a Globalsat BT-308 and I cant get the gps to start, I have tried Com7 on all baud rates (should be 38400) but as soon as the status shows gps started it stops again and if I press start again the status shows starting and stays that way, I have to reboot the phone. I have tried all Com ports but none of them work, I get gps started on Com 1, 8 & 9 but no gps data is displayed.

What am I doing wrong? I have tried reonding but I dont think thats the issue, the gps unit worked fine with mapopolis and works pefectly with my pocketpc!!!!

Hello

Are you saying that the gps works with mapopolis on your phone? I am putting together a version of smarthiker with more detailed error handling so that I can try and help people like yourself to get their gps devices working with SmartHiker. I will post to this thread when Its available.

what your looking for is called POOM. It lets you access various parts of pocket outlook

There is an example from microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

Hope this gives you enough to get started.

There is also a commmercial component for doing this http://www.inthehand.com/PocketOutlook.aspx

As promised a newer beta has been released that should allow non-uk usage!

Also added a few other fixes and a new baud-rate option for some of you.

Download the latest version HERE

Let me know how you get one everyone

I've tried using this with my Fortuna clipon bluetooth GPS and C500 but can't get it to connect.

Checking the information that came with the Fortuna it requests a datarate of 38400 and how do I know which com port to use?

New version hopefully comming today with non-uk fix and support for baud-rate 38400. Ill post to this thread when released. Not sure how you tell which com port, I suggest you just try them all once the new version is released

OpenNetCF MUST be installed on the phone, not on storage card !
GPS never starts because it works at 38400 bps

Mark I'll have a look at your problem in the next beta release, can you give me as much detail as possible

thanks Brian

only works in the uk.....

Hi everyone

Due to a small bug, which Im working on fixing, it will currently only work for a uk lat/long.

Im planning on developing the product to support as many world grid systems as possible as well as extra features like total distance, km/miles option, weather, sunrise/sunset times.

Ive tested it using a c500 and tomtom GPS but theres no reason it wont work with other combinations.

Let me know if you have any ideas

Thanks

Hello

As far as I know you are right, the Nokia version and MS smartphone version are different and come with different software.

The MMC cad is a type of SD card I believe.

http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/..._id=109&pp_id=0

Is the cheapest place Ive seen and will pricematch

Just a quick note, the TomTom SDK current does not support TomTomMobile or the new TomTom 4 for pocketpc (usa version) it only supports the older TomTom 3.

There has been no word from TomTom about a new SDK so you Id stick with other alternatives.

Not being an expert on any level but,

1) Not as far as Im aware, they don't have any console that u can get to

2) C# / VB.NET / managed C++ its all the same once compiled into .NET intermediate language so it doesn't matter

3)You need to download and install the smartphone SDK then (assuming your using visual studio) you start a new project, choose "smart device application" then it lauches another wizard where you choose the type of smartdevice you want (Pocketpc / smartphone / Wince) and the type of project (windows app / empty project / Class library)

4) You can change the 'input' mode programatically look at this post:
http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=112291

P.S. if your new to all this I advise you take a look at http://www.opennetcf.org a free library for smartdevices that fills in alot of the gaps microsoft has left in the compact framework

Hope that helps

No idea about the speed, but interested to find out.

From purely a dev view I would rather use multipleforms for 2 reasons:

1) The ide wysiwyg view would be unusable with multiple pannels
2) I believe that until you show a form it will not use any resources, whereas a hidden pannel is just not rendered to the screen it still uses resources

Any other comments?
