QUOTE(THUNDERZ2000 @ Mar 13 2005, 09:49)
i bought a buffalo router and radio card for my laptop. I set up the router and created a network on the pc (using broadband 4 meg)  i installed the radio card in the laptop and it saw the network and allowed me to connext.

Now heres the fun

The 2000 when wifi is activated sees the same netowrk as i see it says connected... but no matter what i do it wont connect to the network. lots of various prompts appear like cannot connect etc.

Im pulling my hair out here....does my PC need its own radio adapter too..but if that was the case the laptop wouldnt function....

can someone please help me solve this nightmare before i buzz the lot including the 2000 into the nearest ocean

Are you using any form of encryption?

Are you using MAC filtering?

Have you assigned an IP to the M2000 or are you using DHCP?

i just think that you could set youre email sync to run every hour. if you do it ten times a day then that works out to be 15k per day of traffic. which equates to about 450k per month. if you have data bundles then its piss cheap. why pay 27 quid for this service. if you still have to pay for the download of the mail anyway... dont really see much point in it.
*

Anyone who's ever owned a Blackberry will be able to tell you the benefits of this. Receiving your email literally seconds after it has been sent can be very advantageous. Of course, different people have different needs. If you don't require the email immediately, then you are better off polling your server...me...I'll probably pay the £27/year...seems like a good deal to me...just my 2 pence worth.

Only got phone a week ago, still getting to grips with it! What's the difference between the two backups? Is the permanent save one just Outlook data?
*

The permanent save option keeps a copy of your Contacts, Appointments, Tasks and Connection Settings in flash memory.

Go into permanent save and tick the required boxes. In the event of power loss, when you recharge, simply tick all of the boxes in permanent save again, and it will bring all of the above back.

Smart, I used to carry a printout of my numbers as well. Probably should start to do that again.

One thing that is useful is that you can import contacts into Hotmail from Outlook via a CSV file. Handy for creating an online repository of your contacts for those bad times.
*

Why not just use the permanent save option.

Thanks again!

In Mac OS X, goto system preferences. Click on sharing - underneath internet and network - , and there is a tab in there called internet. Click on it and there are some options to select which connection has the internet connection and which one you want to share it with.

Bummer. I run my own server, so it's free and it's an unlimited mailbox. OK, so the drive is 160 gig, but that's not going to fill up!

I've got several thousand messages in some folders; that could be really nasty. I guess I could fix it by writing an auto-archive script on the server, to move them into weekly folders, but that just sucks.

Setting up mail will be one of the first things I do, so I'll post back results. Where are you reading about the problem? I've not heard of it at all.
*

I went googling for an answer to the problem, and it came up with plenty of other people experiencing it.

I also have a fair few emails...2 years worth to be exact...and I'm thinking of maybe using some rules in outlook to move some of the older emails to a different folder.

Keep us posted on how you go with it smile.gif

I'm still on the original retro SPV, not seen any problems in two years. I've got it set up to get the last 7 days of headers only, which might be something you are looking to try out. I never delete mails, diskspace is less valuable than my time.

You can't delete mails on the phone at all (they come back next sync), but I've gotten used to that.
*

Sorry, I thought you had an M2000. Maybe it's a problem with the newest version then.

No matter what you set it to receive in terms of days, it still trys to pull all of the headers in. This seems to be a known problem also.

I would like to find a client that works properly with IMAP, as it is much better than POP. All of my accounts are now forwarded to my 1and1 account, and for 69p/month, they are giving me IMAP access, and a 1Gb mailbox.

To put the £6 in perspective, I poll my imap server every two hours 24/7 and it never goes over my £7 GPRS package. So, I wouldn't save anything, just reduce the length of time it takes for a mail to reach me.
*

Slightly off topic...but which client do you use on your handset to collect from your IMAP sever? I'm trying to use Pocket Otlook to connect to my 1and1 accounts IMAP server, but it imports so many headers then complains about the connection. Does it over GPRS and Wi-Fi. It appears that I'm not the only one either. There seems to be a lot of people complaining about Pocket Outlook with IMAP.

No probs mate.

You can either use T-Mobiles outgoing SMTP server, or try leaving it as it is, but, edit the account settings, and under options, tick the box that says "Outgoing email server requires authentication"...should work then. If not, then you will just have to use t-mobiles server.

QUOTE(Kieron555 @ Feb 6 2005, 18:23)
I have just bought a T-Mobile MDAIII and am having problems sending and receiving email. Basically I have a Wanadoo email account and have entered the pop3 and smtp settings as well as my username and password. The only thing I haven't entered is the domain as Wanadoo have told me I need to leave this blank.

Anyway I can browse the web using the GPRS connection fine, but when I try to send and receive emails I just get a message saying "connecting" then it does nothing. I've waited for 15 minutes and still nothing, there is definitely a problem.

I have spoke to T-Mobile and they have said that as long as the GPRS is working (which it is) then they can't offer me any further support. I have also spoke to Wanadoo and they have told me that all the settings are correct and they have no idea why it isn't working!

Can anyone please help?

Cheers!

QUOTE(fraser @ Feb 2 2005, 14:58)
I use courier-imap, which is OSS and therefore completely free, but you'll need a linux box to use it. If you are on Windows, check out IMail, I believe it's free for either a limited number of users (five) or non-commercial use.

Yes, my phone contacts my PC. I use dyndns.org to keep my dynanic IP address in DNS, so I put the host name on the phone. Should the IP change, DNS is updated for me. I also use a non-standard port, to keep the IP scanners at bay.

Sending is via whatever is available. It's set as smtp.orange.net on my phone. As I said before, an entry in the HOST file tricks the phone into using my NTL server when it's docked. You don't have to send from the same place as receiving for mail to work.

The mail gets into the imap server by polling your regular POP mailbox. This way, the messages get held if your server is down. When it is running, it will take messages from my ISP mail account. You could poll as many mailboxes as you want this way, and pull them all into one account.

I've also got this set so that messages from different sources go into different folders. Mailing lists etc don't go to the phone; it was a pain in the ass getting notifications all the time!!
*

Thanks for that fraser...I'll be giving that one a go. I used to have a dyndns account (probably expired by now), and my router supports it, so that should work a treat.

Thanks for the info

QUOTE(fraser @ Feb 2 2005, 11:25)
A much much better way is to get a hold of an IMAP mail server, instead of POP. I run one on my home network, accessible to the outside world over my broadband connection.

Basically, my work PC, my laptop, my home PC and my SPV all access the same mail box. Delete/move the message on one, it's deleted/moved on all etc. The messages are stored on the server and the phone keeps the last X days locally. I've got mine set on 7 days; so the phone only has the last week of mails in the inbox. My desktops can see every mail. Every mail I've received in fours years that is; it's more cost effective to archive into folders and buy the extra drive space, rather than wasting your time deleteing.

For outbound connections, use your phone ISP details, e.g. smtp.orange.net. Then, in your PCs HOST file, create an entry for the same address but put in the IP address of your real ISP details e.g. for smtp.ntlworld.com put in 212.250.162.8. Then your phone can send mails over the air, or over active sync.

It helps being a networking guru... wink.gif
*

I like the sound of that...can you recommend an IMAP server...preferably cheap smile.gif

Just to clarify, when the phone checks for mail, it contacts your home machine instead of the ISP...and when you send mail, it again sends it via your home machine...is that right?

Cheers

The only downside is that you have 2 accounts on the phone for the same mailbox.
*

Yes and no. Once you download the messages again on your home machine, they will disappear from the server, and also, when your handset checks for mail again, they will disappear from the handset as well. Now, when you sync with the machine at home, your activesync account will contain all your old mails. Works well enough for me......probably not explained very well, but you get my drift smile.gif

M2000 - Am I missing something?  POP3 is set to check email every 30 minutes or whatever.  This all works fine until you get a text message.  Having moved to the text message account GPRS will not poll the server until you go back to POP3 by tapping accounts/pop3.  Surely it should poll for email regardless of your default account.
*

It is a bug...also, no matter how many email accounts you have set to auto-check...only the currently selected one will work.

Anyone had this and over come it?  I've been suffring with it for a week now.

It always seems to hit when I'm typing an email (which is mostly what I use the keyboard for), I'll be typing away happily when the keyboard just stops responding.  The screen keyboard, caharacter recogniser and transcriber all continue to work, and the case-mounted buttons all still work, but the keyboard just dies!  I'm mystified!  It seems to happen at random points in a mail and requires a reset to fix.  I've tried swapping apps to see if it's the email app that has frozen, but the keyboard will not respond in any other app, and, as I say, I can carry on emailing using screen input.

Been on to Orange support, but as I'm a personal customer rather than a business one, I don't think they're geared up for dealing with M2000s.  At first they tried to stonewall me saying 'well if the reset fixes it carry on till we hear back from the manufacturer' but the (very helpful) support guy I got said he wasn't having that and managed to get me an exchange. (Having orange care helped in this respect, I think).

... Then we found out that there are no M2000s to exchange!  So it looks like I'm test driving a P910i for the foreseeable future.

Just wondering if anyone had come across this?

Yeah...mine did it the other day whilst I was using messenger...only happened once though.

Another vote for writeshield...have used them since day 1 without a problem.

As for lifting at the edges...I used them on my P900 as well, and they did the same. Wonder if it's to allow them to be removed easily for cleaning.

Jus curious as to whether or not the M2000 is likely to get an upgraded rom to sort the same problems, i mean i knows its orange its not very likely but ya never know

is it possible to update the M2000's with an I-Mate rom? if so i might see if i can get a hold of the new one.
*

I spoke to Orange a few weeks back, and they assured me they are working on the ROM update, and it shouldn't be too long.

If it's just the bluetooth problem you are trying to fix, some people have installed the bluetooth patch from i-mate...see this thread

http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=197904

I am personally gonna wait for Orange to release the update...as someon said, don't wann mess it up with the supply shortages.

Has anyone noticed that the M2000 screen is slightly distorted, especially around the edges?

I have fitted a Writeshield screen protector which keeps lifting in places around the edge of the screen, even after repeatedly flattening it down.  It's only a minor point but cosmetically "bubbles" around the edge of the creen don't look very pretty!

The iPAQs have perfectly flat screens and do not seem to sutter from this problem.

My writeshield protector does that too, but the wirteshield I had on my P900 also did it. I think it is a problem (or feature to aid removal) of the protector, and not the screen.

Further to my last post, I wonder whether there were some installation problems with the early M2000s.

In addition to my Talk Now card being empty, Avantgo was not installed properly, and had to be re-installed using the latest software from the Avantgo web site.  Also my MMS wasn't working properly, and Orange Data Support had to help me tweak my settings....

Yeah, my MMS didn't work til Data Support took me through the settings...you have to have "Orange MMS" in the box labelled "Programs that connect to a private network should connect using:" in Network Management.

Re: The Talk Now card, Orange told me that the handsets that do support 'Talk Now' are being supplied with the program on an SD card. However, since the M2000 doesn't, they are just sending the cards out blank, and not taking the time to remove the sticker...just using up surplus stock.

Anyone else having problems with inbox.  Mine seems to take an extremely long time to check for mail, and has problems sending.

Sometimes it will check ok, then if I set it to auto-check every 15 mins, it does it once or twice, the when I check it to see why it hasn't collected anything later on, I find inbox is stuck on 'Disconnecting'.

I ask, because I was wnodering if anyone having problems had tried this fix:

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/vie...ht=inbox+wm2003

I am thinking of trying it later, but wanted to know if anyone else had first.  If it doesn't work, I assume I can just delete the key from the registry again and all will be back to normal...is that true?

I bit the bullet and tried the hack, and it works a treat. Checks emails in seconds now, and autochecks regular as clockwork......now if only it could do multiple accounts, I'd be a happy man...oh...and it now won't check gmail, but that's because gmail pop3 requires ssl.
