It's OK I took the plunge and did it anyway - seeing as I had no way of accessing the My Storage when the phone wouldn't boot! biggrin.gif It left the My Storage intact - but I did get the 'Dismounted' problem. I just reformatted the My Storage with my PC (managed to back up everything on My Storage before it dismounted) and - touch wood - all is well again!

Hi all,

Got my first problem with my Omnia - it crashed and will now not boot. I get the Omnia screen and the Samsung splash screen but that's it. I need to hard reset (call and hangup keys and reset pin) - what I need to know is will this format my 'My Storage' area or just the internal storage?

If it didn't work after following what was in the 'How to unbrick' thread then it looks like your Omnia is totally bricked and it's a return to Samsung.

Hi,

I don't get the whole idea of emulating touch phon'e UI.

Granted, that the HTC's UI looks fancy, etc. but why would you try to emulate it on Omnia? Shouldn't you have gotten HTC in the first place if this was important?

IMHO samsung's UI is accetable and using SPB's mobile shell with the skin accessories makes Omnia one very goodl looking phone.

Well not really.....by installing TouchFlo on the Omnia we're combining HTC's superior interface (the Samsung widget home screen I found to be useless) and the superb hardware of the Omnia. Best of both worlds.

SPB Mobile Shell is good but I found it limited and a bit too menu driven - plus is isn't a true today screen replacement, simply an app that runs over the top of today. TouchFlo 3D would be fantastic but I doubt it will happen - Manila 2D is hungry enough for Storage space as it is. Each to their own I suppose but I find Manila far more usable (and yes...flash) than Mobile Shell. biggrin.gif

Wouldn't it be easier to set screen rotation to Automatic - I use TomTom on mine and it rotates the app with the accelerometer. With a bit of editing of the HTCHomeSettings.xml file I moved the slider bar in Manila 2D so it is visible in landscape - some of the widgets don't display (contacts and messages if I remember correctly) but it is still usable wink.gif

Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express? Sounds like something to do with password protection on your Outlook - try temporarily removing the password if this is the case to allow ActiveSync to access it. What are you trying to sync other than contacts?

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing for the past week or so with 9 out of 10 posts being Omnia related! biggrin.gif I agree though, seriously good phone - particularly with the TouchFLO 2D installed.

Hi all,

Is there a way to disable the scroll wheel 'scroll' function yet still have the touch d-pad function? I very rarely use the scroll function and it can be a pain sometimes when writing an SMS with the cursor sometimes randomly scrolling around the message - but I would still like to be able to use the touch 4-way dpad function.

can anyone tell me how to get rid of/replace the bottom left and right shortcuts on omnia front screen?currently mine is showing contact on the right and vodafone 'LIVE' on the left. thanks!

Unzip and copy the file below to the \Windows folder on your device:

Attached File  SoftKeyApplet.rar ( 5.16K ) Number of downloads: 23

When you go to your settings on your device and go to the System tab, there should now be a new 'Soft Keys' icon which should allow you to change the shortcuts on your today screen.

Yes tick the box for Calendar when setting up your partnership with ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Centre (whichever one you are using). It's also advisable to tick the Contacts box also as this will sync all your contacts over to your PC - a handy way to backup your contacts.

You'll need ActiveSync (if you're using XP) or Windows Mobile Device Centre (for Vista) installed on your PC - it's on the CD that came in the box with your phone anyway. Generally though it's advisable to upgrade using an XP machine rather than a Vista machine - some ROM updates won't even work with Vista.

Oh and make sure you install the Samsung Modem driver as mentioned in the upgrade guide too otherwise the upgrade will fail.

Hi,
ive just got my new omnia and as much as i like the phone i have no idea how to add new themes ect,. im a complete beginner and would very much appreciate someone to help me as far as the themes go ( for now!! one step at a time!!!)
and it needs to be in as much detail as poss coz remember im a beginer!! other than the themes if anyone else wants to help me with anything else,i wont complain!! maybe explain about roms or something. ive read the basics but as far as actually instaling things ive not had sucsess so far with anythin!!
manythanks
sam

Hi,

There is a thread here that lists all the latest ROM updates for the Omnia and a pretty good guide for upgrading here. As always, upgrading your ROM is entirely at your own risk but as long as you read up on the process and follow the steps to the letter you should be OK. I upgraded recently and it went without a hitch.

Themes for the Omnia are a bit tricky due to the odd screen size - normal QVGA Pocket PC themes will work but the desktop image may not fill the screen or may be distorted (I've not tried them). You can find many in the Downloads section here on Modaco. If you run SPB Mobile Shell software then there are some excellent skins - check this thread here for details. You can find details on Mobile Shell at the SPB website here.

Hi Paul,

Is there any progress on the Omnia skin? I take it that CA will not work at all on the Omnia at the moment (I get a few error messages and the app bombs out) or is this just on mine? tongue.gif

sounds good!

ive installed it but it only covers like 50% of the screen.
what did i do wrong?

The original Manila 2D is designed for a QVGA screen and not the Omnia's WQVGA screen - hence it only filling up part of the screen. Try copying this to the \Windows directory on your device - it might work for you as I couldn't get it to work properly either until I changed is myself:

Working beautifully on my Omnia (ROM HI2). However, I did have to edit the original QVGA HTCHomeSettings.xml file manually to fill the screen as all the ones I downloaded would not work (the dreaded "Click to launch TouchFLO" loop).

Omnia + TouchFLO2D + FTouchSL = fantastic device! Now if only there were a way to get rid of all the Samsung Today stuff biggrin.gif

Well I switched to the Omnia a couple of weeks ago (and soon upgraded the ROM to HI2) and I think it's a great device. Now that I've installed the HTC Manila 2D app it's even better! tongue.gif The only thing that puts me off HTC devices at the moment is the poor camera but I believe these are seeing a big improvement at the moment. And as has been mentioned - resolution (VGA) verses screen space (WQVGA) - I think in my opinion the extra space wins hands down (unless someone works out a way of turning the HTC screens into 'True' VGA that is.

Well I plucked up the courage to update my Omnia (UK unbranded XXHG5) and used my Vista laptop (with XP VMWare machine). Now on DXHI2 and will be having a play to see the differences.

One question....I took a full backup prior to update with Sprite Backup and restored after the update completed - all my apps and data back. Is this the best way to go about it or Hard Reset and manually reinstall everything?

sorry, as i said in another post i newbie here because i just bought an omnia last week and never used windows mobile before. I installed camera aware and one i try to run it i cant because there is message saying:
an error message cannot be displayed because an optional resource assembly containing it cannot be found
and after this one:
unable to apply skin, ensure skin.xml file is present in application directory and well formed

so, should i install anything else? thanks

There is no skin for the Omnia at the moment - please form an orderly queue waiting for Omnia support in CamerAware! tongue.gif

Yes it wipes the internal memory of the phone but most of my stuff is on an external (internal) 8GB card so all I have to do now is reinstall any applications I had (Route 66 being the main one and the CAB to remove the threaded SMSs).

I was under the impression it wipes your internal storage but not the 'My Storage' area? Or is this what you meant anyway? biggrin.gif I do agree though that the Samsung ROMs are confusing (coming from a HTC user of many years).

Could it be trying to download an MMS message? I noticed mine doing this when I had no MMS settings - it would connect to 3G every so often and only stopped when I set up MMS correctly and downloaded the message.

Could it be a difference between the day and night skins and the display problems are brought up when CA switches to the problem skin? Just a thought. Cool skin by the way - almost makes me want a Diamond for the VGA loveliness! wink.gif

On a number of occasions I've had my Vario III + TomTom state I was going > 600mph (usually somewhere around Scotland, and over water). Seeing as at the time I was driving around Surrey abiding by the speed limits, it is a bit odd. A reboot of the phone usually fixes it. wink.gif

Yes it's always quite amusing when TomTom has a 'brain fart' - except when it does it when you're approaching a crucial turning on your journey! dry.gif

As per to WTFH - I'd like to see the website improved. There's a lot of hassle trying to find the URL for the tracker and menu for some of the people here.

Should be streamlined and easy to use. Plus some help guides with the website too, not linking to the Modaco post (maybe Wiki?)

I must admit I did have a bit of trouble finding the download for CamerAware yesterday so I could install it on my shiny new Omnia - perhaps putting the CAB and EXE file somewhere a bit more visible and accessible? Not strictly 'development' suggestions but a suggestion all the same! tongue.gif
