Being a USA resident, I am sorely disappointed that this device does not have the GSM 850MHz band nor EDGE. The UMTS/WCDMA/3G capability is also totally useless for the US market since Cingular is the only one that has UMTS, but that's also on totally different band, since I'm told 2100MHz is used for the military (though it's been rumored to be up for bid around 2007?).

This device is clearly for the non-US market, so I'm ending up with an HTC Wizard by next week.

Don't need to. Just use File Manager and launch CheckLock.exe from there.

Use your File Manager to move the ArcCallerID.lnk anywhere out of the \Storage\windows\StartUp folder.

Hi Friends,

I think, I'M together with a lot of users that don't use a picture in their contacts list. Can we change the phone that it will not try to show the picture, not in the front screen and not in the main screen, when a call is coming.

Who can help to eliminate the ID call picture?

Well, you can increase the shutdown time to accomodate your lengthy sound file.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Splash Screen

Change either or both CarrierShutdown and MSShutdown.

Sorry, just tried that and didn't work... but this did!

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\PowerOnWave

Sound = MOTO_Startup.wav

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\Shutdown

You can change the on value to 0 and it won't play anything, or you can rename the Sound value.

Try replacing MOTO_PowerDown.wav and MOTO_StartUp.wav in the \Windows folder with anything you want, or make 0-byte files as replacements. You can't physically "overwrite" the ROM files, but you'll displace them with any replacements you provide. If you delete the modified files, the original ones will automatically pop back in its place.

Trying to make the best of both worlds, I decided that perhaps the MPx220 is worth taking another look at if the memory management issue could be resolved. After all, with Cingular's Media Works Unlimited, I want to keep Agile Messenger open all day to send/receive IMs, while using the phone, surfing, playing games, etc.

Then, it dawned on me - why is the Audiovox SMT5600 with an apparently older revision of WM2K3 running things better than the newer MPx220?

The answer is in a couple of registry keys.

MPx220
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LowMem]
"ResetDivision"=dword:1
"ProgramMem"=dword:32

SMT5600
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LowMem]
"ResetDivision"=dword:0
"ProgramMem"=dword:96

After forcing in the SMT5600 settings on the MPx220, I ran Agile Messenger and connected. Then, I ran Internet Explorer. Launched Agile again, and same copy of Agile still came back, still connected. Launched MSN Messenger. Launched Agile again, still accessible and running. Launched Tasks, Contacts, Calendar, File Manager, Resource Management. Returned to Agile Messenger, still running! Using these new registry settings, all these programs are running simultaneously, Agile Messenger is still active, connected, and accessible!

With the original registry settings, Agile Messenger would get lost in the memory and a new instance of Agile Messenger would launch, and not be able to connect because the original copy was still connected.

I may have just forgiven the MPx220!

It's sad that it sometimes has to come to class action lawsuits, but sometimes, I feel it's more understandable, considering you're not just buying a product, but your actually locking yourself into that product for 1 to 2 years with a recurring charge. Sometimes it would be much easier for people if carriers weren't so restrictive on their network to allow the best features of the phone's technology (read: Bluetooth on V710 for Verizon, Java:D vs. BREW:evil:). Also, I'm still peeved that the ETF of a phone contract in the US is anywhere between $150-250. Being fair, at most, it should be 2-3x whatever your normal monthly fee is.

Daringly, I used the SDA Unlocker (search the forums here for the attachment) and was able to write to the locked portions of the registry on my SMT5600. I ran it on my MPx220 and it froze on startup, requiring a hard reboot.

As for the application unlocking, the attachment seems to be the universal method. With the Smartphone in ActiveSync, copy the file CheckLock.exe over to your Smartphone and run it. It should say, "Your phone is locked." Type rapiconfig /p ResetSecurity.xml at a DOS prompt. Run CheckLock again and it should say that your phone is now "not locked."

I ordered the Silicon case and its on its way, but it looks like I'm going back to the MPx220 due to SMT5600 compatibility issues with Cingular (read: voicemail).

It could take a week or so to get here, so it'll probably be on eBay, unused, the moment I get it, unless anyone wants to buy it off of me. I live in NJ USA.

I'd trade away my phone/firmware for better compatibility on Cingular's network (regarding voicemail notification) and give up WMP10 anyday.

Hi Udayan71, probably the best music player is PocketMusic this allows you to sort by title or by folder path.

This can be trialed but its not free, the best all format media player is BetaPlayer, this is free but I personally fell that PocketMusic is much better for just playing music.

I could have sworn that either florin or some other users were talking about an 850 ROM around here. In any case, who's phone is this really that would be providing the firmware? After unlocking this AT&T Wireless phone, I get a roaming indicator all the time, other provider names popping up on my Home screen such as AT&T Wireless or T-Mobile (and hardly Cingular), and the infamous SMS message from 05 instead of a voicemail indicator icon. Just want to get these little things fixed so I can move on with it. :|

AFAIK the C500 is 900Mhz only, it's nly the 5600 that has 850 so there isn't a C500 firmware that supports 850.

As you all know, I posted the guide to converting the Audiovox SMT5600 to Cingular with everything working but the voicemail notification icon. The annoying yet somewhat tolerable "05" text message notification is what I get when both someone leaves a message and when I clear them out.

Perhaps I'm just a stickler when it comes to having it my way, but I wanted to know if:

1. Is anyone using an actual Orange SPV C500 phone on Cingular's network? If so, are you receiving voicemail notifications or the same "05" text message?

2. Can an 850MHz-compatible C500 firmware be loaded onto an unlocked SMT5600? Has anyone done it? I am aware of the loss of Windows Media Player 10 in the process, but as I understand it, Orange will release an update to include that, and plus, I have little need for the this version of Media Player's extra capabilities, if anything. I'd revert to PocketMusic if I had to. Can anyone provide an 850MHz-compatible version of the C500 firmware to load onto my SMT5600?

3. Are there any outstanding issues in using a C500 phone or firmware on Cingular's network? As I see it, it's a one-way process, and I won't be able to get the AT&T branded SMT5600 firmware back, since no one apparently has it. If I do make the firmware switch, it's got to work completely.

Worst case scenario, I dump the whole thing and go for an SX66 and return to the PocketPC world. But that's $350 more than what I wanted to spend. Also, the $50 rebate for the SX66 requires an "Unlimited PDA Connect" plan. I don't see this feature or plan when I go through the process of ordering one online, nor do I know the price of it (something tells me it's higher) - is it different than Media Works, and can I keep using $19.99 Media Works instead?

Please help me out as I'll be making the decisions and actions on this in the very immediate future. Thanks!

My current setup: AT&T Wireless-branded Audiovox SMT5600 (unlocked by c500-unlock.com), running on Cingular plan with Media Works.

While I'm more happy with my Audiovox SMT5600 on Cingular that was unlocked and converted over from AT&T Wireless, I came upon a little anomaly in the notifications.

Every once in a while, I would receive a text message from "05" with no message body. I simply thought I was either being spammed or was an inadvertent message of some sort.

At the same time, I just happen to check my voicemail and noticed I had a few unread messages.

With a little Google-ing, I stumbled on the answer. It appears that these "05" text message notifications are the result of the carrier trying to tell the phone that a voicemail has arrived. One user here wrote that it shows up twice, once before listening to his messages, and once after. It appears to be a side-effect of converted phones not originally branded and tested by the current wireless carrier.

Conclusion: The "05" message is a toggle for the voicemail notification icon. The converted SMT5600 hasn't showed the voicemail icon on the top status bar since I received the phone. I browsed my wife's entire registry on her MPx220 for "05" or "voicemail" or "vmail" and found nothing of value that could be ported over to the SMT5600.

I'm thinking it's probably hardcoded into the firmware or in the databases where events and other notifications are stored.

I would appreciate anyone who has any insight or technical ability to peer into their phone's system or general knowledge of PocketPC Phone Editions/Smartphones to see if this could be resolved. Apparently, there has also been a "movement" with disgruntled T-Mobile users who have been having a similar issue of their carrier sending SMS messages instead of using the phone's own voicemail notification icons.

Another alternative is if someone could trigger the 05 text message with a third-party app to force the voicemail icon on & off, or pop up a window, and delete the message automatically, that would be greatly appreciated.

You can hold down the End key (seems to work on a lot of Smartphones) until it goes into Key Lock mode, but I was personally hoping for an automatic Key Lock mode instead of an automatic Device Lock with Password mode.

Try QuickReset.exe. Instantly reboots the phone.

http://members.home.nl/joentje75/smartphone/spp.htm

By the way, if you find that the phone powers down too slowly, it's because Microsoft or the carrier added some delays for their bitmaps.

You can change it by going to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Splash Screen

and set CarrierShutdownTimeout and MSShutdownTimeout to 100.

I HAVE DONE IT!

I love this phone so much that I decided to create an easy-to-use, step-by-step guide on how to convert a fully AT&T Wireless-branded and personalized Audiovox SMT5600 into a full-fledged Cingular Smartphone.

The explicit GPRS/WAP settings for use with the Media Works data plan has been corrected from previous threads and fully tested to be operational.

The zip file comes complete with the verified instructional guide in PDF form, replacement banner graphics (made by yours truly), and utilities to modify the registry and settings.

Thanks to everyone on the forums who made this guide possible.

Now, everyone, switch over from your buggy MPx200/MPx220, go get the SMT5600, and use this guide!

http://www.beyondthetech.com/downloads/pho...600Cingular.zip

Enjoy it, everyone!

Brand spanking new.

Just so you know, the infamous cumulative call times that are usually hardcoded into most phones are simply stored in the registry (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Cumulative...] so if you wipe it out, it's kinda like bringing the odometer back to zero. Of course, no one will believe you if the phone is a bit busted up. wink.gif

Hey,

You seen to know what you're talking about!! If I do a "http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=ST&f=1...62&st=0>HARD RESET" then this will remove all of these, right? As in, after a "http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=ST&f=1...62&st=0>HARD RESET" it would be like the phone is new and such no reminants of programs left at all. The phone will be as if the program was never installed. Is this correct?

Many Thanks

Dan.

I've had some experience with this already since I've had a PocketPC since they were first released, and we all know Windows PCs are notorious for leaving things behind after an uninstall.

First things first. After uninstalling the program on your Smartphone, if it says something about rebooting the phone to remove any additional remnants, do it.

When you're back on the home screen, use File Manager (not any other third-party Explorer-type utility) and navigate to \Storage\windows\AppMgr. You'll see folders of all the programs you ever installed there. Delete the folder of the program you uninstalled. You'll see that third-party folders have issues in deleting these folders and files, but File Manager has no problems with it.

Next, check the \Storage\Application Data folder and delete any related folders to the program. If you're not sure, don't delete anything. For example, Connected Bits' Weather application will create a folder called Connected Bits in there, which can be deleted safely after uninstall.

Lastly, check the registry using ChrisOn.NET's RegEdit.NET, Smartione (for modifying the registry from your PC), or PHM RegEdit (although it's buggy). You may find entries or folders under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apps.

That should take care of most of the remants of most programs installed on your Smartphone.

Cingular does it for free. Apparently, you just ask. You can add that you'll be going to a location overseas that does not support international roaming.
