The 486 SX/DX analogy does not hold up.

Firstly, in the case of the 486 chips, since the silicon size required for the DX chips was not significantly larger, the costs associated with the added functionallity were negligable. By offering a lower-class CPU with the extra functionallity intentionally disabled, Intel could scrounge some cash from people who couldn't afford the full-blown DX chip.

In the case of the C600, adding a wi-fi radio and antenna cannot be done at almost no cost. Unlike the 486, the extra modules are not fully integrated into other chips. Even if HTC/Orange didn't want to create a seperate design for tornado variants without Wi-Fi, they could have simply not soldered in the unneccessary components. Also, since Orange does not offer a higher-end C600 equivelant WITH wi-fi, it makes no sense whatsoever from a marketting perspective to disable a module which could be enabled free-of-charge - it simply drives people who need Wi-Fi to buy competing phones such as the SP5 or 8310.

Face it - the C600 does not have a Wi-Fi module. Either that, or Orange engineers and marketting guys are totally incompetent.

Cos THREE 486 machines I had - my first ever PC's, did NOT work in the manner you said - they did not have any additional FPU/co-processor chip in at all.

Your story says they were in but just disabled.

Not on three that I had they weren't.

I don't think my mate's did either, if I recall correct.

orange are being big headed and fussy and just love throwing customers about all over the place, the C600 hasnt been released or it has but no orange retail stores are aware of it apperently, and I know that from my running around for the past 4 months.

yes orange C600 has been released, so they say but is it in orange retail? who knows. I hear different stories and everytime I go in the store, they are like "er... no its not been released"

Imate SP5/m is the exact same, with a few differences i believe, as C600 BUT BETTER. IT HAS WIFI and WM5 (I believe C600 has this)

Sure indeed I can explain how I came to be on this contract, which, by the way, is for 12 months.

An orange rep, Ian, I think his name is, was desperate to keep me on his books as I've stupidly been spending in excess of £250 per month for the last three consecutive months.  To cut a long story short, I felt I was in a position to firmly request anything I could from Orange as I considered myself a "valuable" customer; one they wouold not want to lose. 

Demanding the c600 and a very good deal (I even borrowed the famous Rory Breaker line from "Lock, Stock..." line:  "In fact, you're going to have to work very hard just to convince me to stay with Orange".  OK, so it's not identical, but the premise is the same.  Ish.) the chap said that he couldn't implement any new retentions based contract until the sale/delivery of a new handset had gone through as well.  This left me waiting for the day of the c600 release before I could switch to this new plan and still left me paying through my teeth for a mobile bill.

As a temporary measure, to cover the time between my inital complaint and the release of the new handset, I was placed onto the premier service plan and a text 360 bundle which kicked in mid-november.  I was still paying £79 (£55 + £24 text bundle), per month but was prepared to do this for one, maybe two months whilst waiting until the new contract (dictated by the arrival of the new handset) was on offer.

When I was contaced on Friday, he was only too keen to get the handset to me and sort me out with bluetooth this, and free that etc, but with a similar deal to the Premier one but with an load of texts thrown in too.  So, in terms of xnet mintues, service, answerphone, insurance etc, my contract is, for all intents and purposes, the premier plan.  He just capitulated to my polite but firm request for 1000 free texts a month on top of it.  On friday, as I asked him to go through the offer one final time before shipping the handset (which is lovely, by the way), I enquired as to whether or not it included the evening/weekend unlimited bundle.  He replied in the negtive but informed me it would still be an extra £10 a month.  Seems like a good deal to me, and one I want to keep, so I took it up.  I was never aware that it might be common practice to make this mutually exclusive to a retentions based contract.

And there we are.  New contract billing starts on Jan 15th.  Hope this helps explain things.  Any further questions, please let me know.  Oh, and I have Ian's extention number at Orange if anyone's interested.

Just ordered mine too from the regular upgraders (not retentions) who said it came online today and it's pretty unusual for them to do so over Christmas.

However it's costing me 50 quid (I'm not a frequent flyer in mobile call terms) so the pricing is different from the C550 which I was offered for nothing.

Pretty annoying given I've been with them for 8 years and only had one upgrade handset in that time, more fool me I guess.

I rang them yesterday and spoke to the retentions deprtment as I'm toying with going over to T-Mobile for the Vario. The guy said the 600 wasn't available yet and didn't know when it would be. He also said it would not be available on a free upgrade but he tried very hard to push me on to a 550 or a Motorola Razr .

Unless you don't pay enough, otherwsie they ask you to close the door on the way out.

That confirms what I had heard as well - January 2006. Very, very disappointing. I've literally had the cash sat in an envelope waiting since August. The lack of "joined up thinking" in Orange is breathtaking.

Is that the same handset you got as part of the business/preview testers, just packaged in a retail box, or is it a separate handset you've purchased yourself on a retail tariff?

And if the latter, who sold it to you?

Ask them to price match to 3. They will say they cant. So say you want to be disconnected and then they will suddenly "find a new contract" that is as good as 3's for cheaper. Normally works.

Mmmm - and I am now half a month past my two possible upgrades with Orange too, and still no sign of C600 for my son.

But moreover, as I posted once before, take a look at the Upgrades section of the Orange website, and they have practically NOTHING at all half decent in stock...

Seriously though, Orange are managing to extend the 12 month period on my two lines, from the point when I do eventually upgrade, by virtue of me not being able to upgrade yet even though I am well entitled, by having nothing at all decent in stock, and it's been like this for ages - hence my original thread on this somewhere on here.

Also, I am FOAMING with them too, because when I added a new handset and account last year, the greedy gets asked for a deposit, which I have never had ever, and been a customer on two other lines prior to that for a year.

They categorically assured me though, that this would be refundable in the form of a CHEQUE when a year had passed, as it was a cash deposit I paid.

My bill and a letter came last month, to say it had been CREDITED on my next bill.

That's not what I wanted, and absolutely NOT waht they promised.

I just got my SPV C600, it is great, but I still can't manage to launch the new ringtones from the storage card, I always have to save them to the ringtones directory, but there isnt much space available on the home disk.

How do you people do that?

Is it possible to connect to the computer on bluetooth, which has an internet connection, and use its connection, so I don't have to waste money on GPRS, while surfing in my house?

Is there a program you can recomand to play divx videos? except Core pocket it bugs like hell!

I heard ActiveSync 4.0 has some vulnerabilites, should I use 3.8 instead?

hmm thats strange, i just got the TomTom 5 CD, copied the 5 CABs across onto my SD card and ran them from there, i also copied the other files across with them (they have the same names as the files) not sure what extension they were now, but you may need them with the CAB's. I then ran them all one by one from the device and it worked from there.

I then installed the update the same way.

Yes it will install, but you need to do it by copying the .CAB files across, and installing them from the device! I have 5.1 running on mine.... works a treat!
