No prob.

I actually finally took the leap myself, since I'm about to lose access to a computer for an indefinite amount of time. Thank dog for my portable hard drive...

I thought I'd add something here. There is, apparently, a THIRD kind of lock:

(3) Registry Lock

I think we've all run into times where we couldn't tweak our registries. Some time ago Pzee (I think that is the name he goes by at Modaco) posted on his blog:

QUOTE
Smartphone Registry Unlock is a program used to disable registry security lock on your Smartphone.

As always with Pzee's blogging, it is extremely thorough. So go there and read it yourself to learn more.

QUOTE(Bluecobra @ Sep 20 2005, 01:28)
I am having a hard time understanding what you guys are saying about these phones being locked.  Are you just talking about unlocking the SMT5600 so it can use any SIM card or letting the phone be able to run any application you choose?  If the latter, I have been able to run any app on my phone since I bought it from Cingular.
*

There are two types of locks.

(1) SIM Lock

This is the lock that allows your phone to only use a SIM card from a specific company. In our case, AT&T or Cingular, but not both. It is the result of anti-competitive pratices and is hard-coded into the core software that comes with your phone.

Fortunately, SPV-Developers figured out how to get rid of it so you can change carries and still have your phone work!

(2) Application Lock

This is a lock that prohibits you from installing certain types of applications. An early Typhoon model, the UK's 'c500' from Orange refuses to install any applications that do not have proper certification. You'll hear the Brits complain every now and then about this problem, but the truth is they got the Typhoon significantly earlier than those of us in the states. Also, their providor, 'Orange' released a tool to application unlock all their phones.

Because the US gets screwed by the stupidity of our oligopoly providors, the "Audiovox SMT5600" - a version of the HTC 'Typhoon' - had slightly newer software. One of the modifications is that most applications *can* be installed with uncertified (ie, free) ones giving you a warning prompt.

For one reason or another, this isn't the same as having a truly application unlocked phone. Some residual lock remains, which prevents the SPV SIM unlocking tool from working. So, to do that, you must first application unlock your phone. Quite a few people have created solid packages including unlocking software, so that should be easy.

I've hypothesized that this half-unlocking we have also plays a roll in our inability to delete "system" files. I haven't had a chance to explore it myself, and the US Audiovox SMT 5600 community is relatively small compared to the UK c500 community, who prefer to agonize over how they get new phones two months after France and contemplate the upcoming c600.

And, yes, I'm quite bitter that the Typhoon is still considered one of the US' best phones at $250 despite its' upgrade being FREE in the UK.

There are a few questions that have been bugging me about my Audiovox SMT5600's warranty:

{i} Does a small scratch on the screen invalidate the warranty and/or option of having a replacement phone sent (waiting two weeks for a repair is crazy) if the reason for the claim – such as dust – has nothing to do with the scratch? Will they be able to charge me extra when they see that my returned phone has a scratch in addition to my reason for the claim, excessive dust?

{ii} Does SIM-Unlocking invalidate the warranty?

{iii} As Audiovox claims, is Cingular now responsible for covering my warranty? Because I bought my phone under an AT&T plan, I've had decent dealings with Audiovox in the past, and don't quite trust Cingular. For example, when I called Cingular they hassled me about whether my phone had ever been dropped. Yes, it had been, but such an issue had absolutely nothing to do with my claim. Frankly, I would prefer to deal with Audiovox directly rather than going through the Cingular -> Audiovox -> HTC chain!

Now, instinctively the answers to all these questions should be Yes, but I am not quite so sure. At the end of this post, I've included a scanned transcription of the warranty. Now, let's take a look at each of these.

(1) A Scratch in the Screen

QUOTE
This limited warranty does not apply to physical damage to the surface of the product, including breakage, cracks or scratches on the LCD or outside casing. This limited warranty also does not extend to any product from which the serial number has been removed or to any product that has been: (a) damaged or rendered detective by misuse, abuse, accident or other external causes; (b) subjected to unauthorized modification, alteration or repair: or, © operated In an unsuitable environment or In a manner for which it is not intended. Purchasers will be charged for all product repairs for damage or failure not covered by this limited warranty.
Okay, so the scratch isn't grounds for having my phone replaced. But it also doesn't state that having a scratch invalidates my claim, either. If they send me a replacement, and then see that my returned phone also has a scratched, I don't see why this would allow them to fine me. These seems legally analogous to simply having slightly worn buttons, which never seems to have been an issue before.

So, in my view, having a scratched screen is okay so long as it in particular is not the basis for requesting a replacement phone (trust me, it isn't).

(2) SIM Unlocking

I've read all over that unlocking one's phone invalidates the warranty. But I am not quite sure that this applies to phones covered by Audiovox.:

QUOTE
Audiovox shall not be responsible for Purchaser’s software, firmware, information or memory data contained in, stored on, or integrated with any products returned to Audiovox for repair, whether under warranty or not.

If they aren't responsible for fixing my firmware, then I don't see why they could invalidate my warranty because I've hacked it. Audiovox only seems interested in the hardware, which makes sense given that they are not both the distributor and service providor, as is the case for Orange.

(3) Cingular Taking Over

I'm sorry, but isn't the warranty expressly a contract between the “Purchaser” and “Audiovox”:

QUOTE
Audiovox Communications Corp. (“Audiovox”) warrants to the original retail purchaser (“Purchaser”) that this Audiovox product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for one year from the date at original purchase from Audiovox or an Audiovox authorized reseller.
I don't see any clause here allowing them to pass responsibility onto Cingular. Unless given a persuasive reason why I should deal with Cingular, this seems like a breach of contract on Audiovox's part. I know Audiovox doesn't throw fits about worn keys, but haven't heard the best of stories about Cingular. I'll stick with the demons I know, thank you very much.

Anyways, I'd appreciate people's thoughts on this.

Before posting the full warranty, there are two places the warranty is mentioned in the manual:

QUOTE
p2:
YOUR WARRANTY IS INVALIDATED IF YOU OPEN OR TAMPER WITH THE DEVICE’S OUTER CASING. (For more information, see the enclosed warranty statement.)

QUOTE
p190
Modifications
The FCC requires the user to be notified that any changes or modifications made to the device that are not expressly approved by High Tech Computer Corporation may void the user’s authority to operate the equipment.
And now, for the behemoth itself. And yes, it really does end with the word "other", no punctuation:

QUOTE

I wouldn't if I were you. There is only one thing I am absolutely certain will void your warranty, and that is taking your phone apart. You never know when you might want your warranty; if your phone loses the ability to receive sound from a headset (mine did), you'll be hard pressed to find a solution on any of the boards. I've been holding off switching to another plan that could save me $30/month in no small part because of how valuable I consider it to be!

Your choice, but forking up the $60 could save you $400 later down the road.

Do screen covers tend to help at all, as I am too lazy/thrify to cover the rest? And are there any recommended ones? I tried a Palm covering - useful if only to protect from scratches - and am very disatisfied with my resulting picture quality.

Find yourself a .wav converter. I haven't searched before, but they shouldn't be too hard to find somewhere on Modaco or, for that matter, any other Smartphone site. I imagine Symbian users have exactly the same need.

The truth is that you don't want or need three minutes of ringtone, nor exceptionally high quality audio, as these are being blasted out at high volumes but (relatively) low quality.

Any good utility should prove adept at creating compact files, knocking a 4,000 KB file down to a 20-100 KB one. You should even be able to find one that allows you to select your favorite part of the song.

~Abecedarian

P.S. Feel free to post links to .wav programs, anybody, since for the time being we have a lot of disapointed c500 users.

I'd don't really care what sort of files are beter, that's not the question.

If mp3 ringtones are part of the upgrade, why the **** don't they work ?

I've got more volume in bluetooth, and a fancy icon when vibrate is selected ... but I'm missing my Van Halen's 'Hot for Teacher' ringtone!!!

HELP !

Thanks PatP

Back OT:

"Is this the official update list? -

* Windows Media Player 10
* MP3 ringtones
* Ringtones from your SD card
* Compatibility with the THB car kit"

What's been added/fixed in WMP10? Why's it better than 9? (apparently).

p.s - I see BetaPlayer is now called "The Core Pocket Media Player".
*

(1) Re: CoreCodec's TCPMP/BetaPlayer.

In my experience, sort of. The interface of TCPMP is a bit cleaner than BetaPlayer, but tends to run a bit slower. The thing that has generally made BetaPlayer superior to others w.r.t. mp3 players is that it skips ahead and loads new files significantly faster, with little to no pause. There now tends to be a slightly longer pause, which becomes very noticable when you are in the mood to dart around in the middle of a song.

On a side note, does anybody now if TCPMP is able to play WMP now? On my SMT5600, I've never been able to get BetaPlayer to play them; apparently c500 users have everything we do now!

I'm suprised that no one has figured this out yet but, YOU CAN UNLOCK SMT 5600 with SPV Services app for free. I've unlocked four SMT5600 so far with no issues. All you have to do is:
1) Find on the net No Warez and resetsecurity.zip. Read the "readme" and used them as instructed (reset security does not have instructions just run it on the device)... You might not have to use both but this always worked for me
2) This will app unlock your device, and some more (i'm not sure how this helps but running the both worked for me all the time) then reboot
3) Use the SPV services (C500 unlock tool) as directed, vola..  biggrin.gif
Now you have a SMT 5600 Sim-unlocked...
Enjoy...

Ships passing in the dark!

I expounded on Cyberdim's post on the first SPV-Developers' thread and, most recently, on a Modaco thread here:

http://www.modaco.com/Possible_to_SPV_Deve...0l-t222918.html

People can use either thread. However the one I started more recently has useful links and a few other notes. If you choose to search for these programs on your own, be aware that you are looking for "aeconfig_.zip", except without the underscore in between. Apparently Modaco doesn't like to see the first eight letters, and changes them to "No Warez" if followed by a space or .zip!

(1) Introduction

Over at the SPV-Developers' Board thread on unlocking the Audiovox SMT5600, Cyberdim offered up advice on how to unlock the Audiovox SMT5600 using the SPV-Developers' free C500/C550 SIMLock Toggling (FREE) tool. While Modaco previously had a post on the Free SIM unlock for the SPV C500 from SPVdevelopers.com, it didn't really do much for those of us in the states.

I haven't actually tried Cyberdim's advice on my own phone yet, but did follow up with a list of links to the files he suggested. My general impression right now is that the SMT5600 is actually application-locked, but merely a different type. I'll discuss this later, after going through the juicy parts.

Without any more ado...

(2) Cyberdim's Advice:
QUOTE(Cyberdim on the SPV-Developers' Forum)
I'm suprised that no one has figured this out yet but, YOU CAN UNLOCK SMT 5600 with SPV Services app for free. I've unlocked four SMT5600 so far with no issues. All you have to do is:

Now you have a SMT 5600 unlocked...

In response to this, I dug up links to the suggested files, which I will post/update here as well. Because I am waiting to unlock my phone for a variety of complicated reasons - stemming from my hesitancy to void the warrenty of a highly dust-prone device - it should be noted that I have not tried many of these programs myself. Experiment with them (and post the results, of course) at your own risk.

(3) aeconfig_.zip

For some reason Modaco's automated gods aren't letting me link to this file, which is odd since msmobiles.com mentions that Modaco used to host it (here and here). Similarly, airfagev mentions it as well. I'll just assume for the time being that it is legit for me to talk about it and that this censorship is entirely automated. Very odd. If Modaco does have a problem with all this, I'll simply tone most this down to “Google a zip file named aeconfig_, except without the underscore.”.

A working version of the file can be found at on Machineman's list of free smartphone downloads (http://members.home.nl/joentje75/smartphone/spp.htm), which as far as I can tell contains outdated versions of a few programs that were free in early beta.

The file contains AEConfig_.exe, DisableSecurity.xml, a .lnk file to activate them, and a manual. I believe the link is unnecessary given the pseudo-unlocked aspect of the SMT5600.

The included manual states the following:
QUOTE
No Warez unlocks your SPV/ E100 / E200
This removes the software lock.
Unzip the file
place the "Disable Security" shortcut in "/IPSM/windows/start menu"
PLace the files "No Warez.exe & DisableSecurity.xml" in the "/Temp" folder.
Now run the disable Security from your phone start menu
After a while you get the messsage that it succeeded.
Good Luck Machneman"

It is worth noting that this is not targeted at the Typhoon (Audiovox SMT 5600 / Orange c500 / etc) model, but it wouldn't surprise me if it still works.

Another version can be found on a post at pdamobiz.com, D/L SmartPhone Program ( http://www.pdamobiz.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19034 ). This site also seems outdated and legit. I haven't downloaded it, however, and don't know whether it contains the same zipped files.

(4) resetsecurity.zip

I found two downloads for this, each a bit different. It should be noted that neither contained a manual.

{i} Modaco -> How do you set up hotmail on the phone??

This file contains ResetSecurity.exe, a 4 KB executable. No manual is included.

I have no clue whether it actually works. The post explains a little bit about how it works, and apparently some found the results satisfactory.

{ii} Motorola MPx220 and Audiovox SMT6500 "app locked"?

This file contains CheckLock.exe (4 KB), RapiConfig.exe (49 KB), and ResetSecurity.xml (1 KB). No manual is included, but most of the post itself is fairly informative.

I have only tried the CheckLock.exe program, which did work (results below). Y'all are free to try the rest of them and let us know how they work.

I have no idea if there is any significant difference between these two downloads, but my instinct is that there isn't.

(5) Questions

I trust that these will work, and am looking forward to trying them once I get a replacement dust-free phone. However, I am not sure if there is a major difference between the two. From the Modaco posts and the No Warez manual, both programs seemed geared towards app-unlocking smartphones. What I don't know is:

{i} How are they different?
{ii} How does No Warez.exe work?
{iii} Are both needed, or is it redundant?

Not the most pressing questions, if - as Cyberdim claims - used together they get the job done. Just questions that could yield other insights.

(6) Inferences/Insights

I tried CheckLock.exe, and it informed me that my phone (which uses the AT&T ROM) is application locked. I am quickly coming to the conclusion that the SMT500 is locked, although in a slightly different way. I've had a fairly long thread with pzee, and am starting to think that this could purely be the result of some "special" application lock that applies only to the Audiovox SMT5600. I am curious whether an application locked c500 user is able to use SPV-Developers' tool and/or delete 'system' files using their computer.

(7) Testing

I strongly encourage everybody who plays with these to post their results. Even if this doesn't work, we can spend a little time hacking away at solving this

And, of course, there are plenty of other methods of application unlocking phones (I think). For example, pzee posted about how he created an explanatory image.

Feel free to post anything you know that works on the SMT5600. SIM Unlocking or exploring how the SMT5600 is application locked (or not). Better yet, take the opportunity to go all theoretical.

That's all, and kudos to Cyberdim for giving we Yankees some hope.

Okay, I know this is the PocketPC forum, but SPV-Developers hasn't addressed this on their website and show no indication of doing so. So I am asking it here, hoping that SOMEBODY from the SPV team is watching.

Has SPV-Developers completely abandoned the SMT-5600 version of the Typhoon, to move onto other European Windows Mobile devices?

QUOTE(pzee @ Jun 21 2005, 23:38)
I was referring to the files inside root \Windows folder and yes there are files marked 'System' inside that folder which can be moved or copied to say a folder on your PC. Example is 'Camera.exe' inside \Windows folder.

Other 'System'-marked files elsewhere, LNKs in particular, are not hard to move (you can easily move shortcuts in ActiveSync). Re-ordering of Start menu entries (via registry editing) can be successfully performed on an app-unlocked phone.

You can easily change the 'System' attribute say of an LNK on your PC then import the LNK back to your phone.
*

Hi pzee. Thanks for working with me on this, and for all your previous great advice. My registry has undergone numerous surgeries as a result of your past posts, and I am quite pleased with the results!

I am not sure if we understand this the same way, but I am guessing that by "ActiveSync Connection" people are refering to their ability to open a window with their Mobile Device, much as they might explorer a removable hard drive (although with no letter in my case).

One of the main reason I titled this post as being related to the SMT is that I had slowly come under the impression from previous postings that c500 users were able to muck around with files via their ActiveSync connection. I use ActiveSync 4.0, but I recall not being able to muck around with certain files on my PC even in earlier versions of 3.7.blah and 3.8.

Anyways, in the purpose of figuring out what makes this so different, I've recorded a few examples of what happens when I try to muck with System-attribute files. Given that SPV-Developers have noted that their unlock does not work on the Audiovox SMT 5600, I am guessing that this issue could play a role in many other endeavors.

So, my experiments:

First, I opened the Properties function in my opened Window on my PC. This gave full information, but did not allow us the option of checking or unchecking any of the attributes.

I tried to copy '\Windows\Camera.exe' to my PC via drag-and-drop, and was given an error prompt on my PC with the title "Error Copying File":

CODE
Cannot copy Camera: Executable and resource files in ROM cannot be copied.

The same thing happened when I tried the normal copy-paste functions.

I then tried it with a basic .lnk that has the 'System' attribute, '\Storage\windows\z-Start Menu\Calendar.lnk'.

(My main Start Menu folder now consists of the non-system attribute links that I created by opening the locked tweaks Tillanosoft Notepad and resaving them as .txt's. After finishing, I renamed the original 'Start Menu' to 'z-Start Menu' and changed my .txt's to .lnk's. They work perfectly, and throw no tantrums if I try to muck around with them.)

I got the following message, again titled "Error Copying File", in response:

CODE
Cannot copy Calendar: Access is denied.

Make sure your mobile device has sufficient memory, and that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type.

I then tried renaming it, using the window on my PC. This time, I got "Error Renaming File":

CODE
Cannot rename Calendar: Access is denied.

Make sure your mobile device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type

Now, here is what really makes me furious. I believe that Windows Media 10 creates a database for each storage section when Updating its' library, and then stores it in the respective internal memory/card. Certainly has advantages if a person wants to swap mini-sds around.

On my storage card, it creates a folder '\Storage Card\MSMETADATA' with the file 'XMEMediaLibrary.mlb' inside. This can be obnoxious and unsightly, so I sometimes want it gone given that I strongly dislike WMP and use it only when I must (yes, there is no shortage of irony here!).

While the .mlb file can be deleted, the folder itself throws up an error message. I don't think I need to really post it, as it pretty much follows all previous trends.

Deleting, Copying, Renaming. This functions cannot be done on the Smartphone and, in my experience, cannot be done on the PC either.

Anything I am doing wrong, or ideas why this is happening? Do other SMT users have the same experience? Could this be related to how SIM-unlocking for the c500 may not be the same as for the SMT5600?

Hi,

AFAIK, system files like coredll.dll and other hidden, system (and protected) files cannot be copied or moved to the temp folder using simple copy-paste technique. In-ROM files cannot be deleted either as they get re-written on a reboot.

There are even archive, non-hidden, non-system files (thus doesn't have read only attribute) which cannot be copied/moved. Take the case of 'MsgQueueDataFileMicrosoft Broadcast Message SMS Protocol (Receive Only)' inside root Windows folder which is around 2.71Mb. You'll get 'sharing violation' error since the file is being used by the system so cannot be copied, deleted or even modified whilest system is on.
*

Do you mean that ALL files with the 'Hidden' and 'System' attributes cannot be moved, or just that certain one's with that attribute cannot? Because in my experience, files with those attributes can be moved (but not deleted).

For example, I wanted to reorder my Start Menu, but have them as non-system files so I can copy the entirety of my re-ordered Start Menu to my computer in case I decided to fry my phone and reinstall everything, as I do periodically. The majority of these files are 'Archive' and 'System', but went to their dooms quite smoothly. As did 'SimTkUI.lnk', which is 'System' AND 'Hidden'.

However, the one thing I noticed is that my new version of SimTkUI.lnk became System after a turning my phone on and off, although the other files did not revert. Probably got overwritten. But, still, not ALL System files behave that way. Similarly, one of the default homescreens that I disliked (AWS.SomethingIForgot) was succesfully trashed as well, and only returns after a Hard reset.

So, is it having 'Hidden' that makes System files come back after a regular reset, or just something that happens for some files during boot phase, according to a script that I haven't seen or haven't looked for?

Hmmm so what's 'App 1 -6' for?

I did a search using Resco Registry Editor. In general, I've had the searches with PHM - which I generally prefer - crash almost immediately when using the Find function. Maybe the result of hitting a file that isn't meant to be looked at or some such. Any ideas for a good registry search utility, either on the Smartphone or, preferably, from the Computer?

Anyways, the first time I searched, it didn't crash my phone (the second is another story). What I found is that under 'HKCU\Software\Binarys\SmartExplorer\OpenWith', that there were keys with the name 'App0', 'App1', App2', 'App3', and 'App4'. The values of these corresponded with the address of the .exe's that I typically use with the 'File' -> '1 Open' -> '2 Open With' sequence in SmartExplorer.

Because the second search crashed my phone, I am not sure whether these same values occur elsewhere, but perhaps 'Menu' -> '1 File' -> '7 Open With' aspect of the normal File Manager uses something similar. Or, probably not, as that ability searches for EVERY .exe possible.

My guess is that maybe they are local values that are used by developers to have programs respond to those keys. For example, in xBar the TVOLUMEUP sometimes corresponds with pasting text that had previously been copied.

Some programs, then, probably make use of many of these functions, but perhaps restrict it to the number keypad out of simplicity. Having a univeral definition. If future phones use a different keyset - such as if Camera were instead keyed to a long press of a soft key, which many here would probably prefer - older programs would not completely stall when calling a key that their phone might now even have!

On a side note, pzee, where did you find these keys? You said somewhere in the c500's registry, probably in a section I either forgot about or never actually looked at. You know this phone better than I know my own body, but not all of us are quite as educated! And you wouldn't happen to have a good registry key search, would you?

I stumbled across a post some time ago, and don’t believe that it was ever properly answered. So, here is my solution, although I believe it goes a few steps further in empowering the user.

In the Audiovox SMT 5600, users cannot uncheck the “System” attribute on any files, regardless of whether they were there after a hard reset or otherwise. This makes them impossible to delete, which is a pain when one wishes to overhaul their start menu or, more important, get rid of obnoxious files that can’t be deleted. I have no idea where to get ROMs and can’t afford to unlock my phone, so I am unsure whether users of the c500 have the same problem.

However, there is a solution!

Three clues:
(1) On the SMT, the user cannot delete system files, although downloaded programs can delete them as far as I am aware. This leads to clutter, and seems to indicate that local commands can do so (assuming I am correct about downloaded programs).
(2) Using the elementary File Manager that came with the phone, the user can MOVE - and only move - system files. No other file explorer, including the amazing SmartExplorer, can even do this.
(3) I believe that anything put into the '\Temp' folder is automatically deleted after rebooting. At the very least, that folder is found empty afterwards.

WHICH MEANS THAT...
Combining (2) and (3), it looks as though any system file can be deleted. At least, I've never had any trouble with respect to any files located in '\Storage' and '\Storage Card'. Simply open file manager, then use Menu -> 1 File -> 4 Move To (or simply select six when in the main area of the browser), and move the naughty file into the “Temp” folder that is located between ‘Storage Card’ and ‘Windows’ at the top of the file tree. Restart, and – assuming your phone survives – enjoy your newfound freedom!

Two more points:
(4) I have no idea if this actually frees up memory or just makes things look pretty. Perhaps somebody can experiment with this and figure out whether the files are permanently erased and leave free memory behind. My instinct is that the OS uses that folder for precisely this purpose, disposing of temporary files that it would prefer you not meddle with. For example, if WMP updates the library, it must dispose of the old information - which was system locked - to make way for the new.
(5) USE WITH CAUTION. This trick should give you the power to delete important files. As I haven't gotten ahold of a Cingular ROM yet, I haven't studied anything to do with ROMs, including what files are considered part of them. However, if you can see ROM files with File Manager, then you can kill them. Which is probably a bad idea.

Hope this helps!

It has taken me the past few hours to fix a rather serious bug, and thought I would share the incident and my solution to the problem.

For starters, here’s my basic information: HTC Typhoon (AT&T ROM), ActiveSync 4.0 (Beta). This may or may not be relevant for ActiveSync 3.8, but is independent of the version of Outlook normally used.

Out of frustration from an earlier escapade, I went into Internet Options / Programs and changed “E-Mail:” from “Outlook” to “Hotmail” (ie, “anything else”). In later experiments I discovered that the same issue arises for any change in client association, including those such as the sleek Thunderbird.

Discovering my disloyalty to Microsoft, ActiveSync immediately chose to declare war on me. When I tried to ActiveSync for Smartphone, it refused to synchronize much of my data. One might think that it was because it couldn’t discover the location or format of my stored emails, except for one small thing...

I have ActiveSync set to never sync my emails. The Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks association were all still linked to outlook in my Internet Settings. And it isn’t as though all of Outlook’s data is tied together; SmartphoneNotes synced perfectly. It was only these other three data sets that posed a problem.

I experimented around a bit. Changing it back so that Outlook was chosen as my primary calendar did no good. Neither did going into Outlook’s settings and checking the box giving it control over all of its’ desired functions. Restarting both my phone and computer did nothing. The error had recommended using the “Detect and Repair” choice under the Help menu for Outlook 2000 and other earlier versions. Niente. It didn’t matter with what preferences I fiddled, ActiveSync refused to ever again synchronize these functions.

But there was a solution. They key is to re-insert the Office/Outlook installation CD and choose the repair function (not the complete reinstall, although I imagine that would also work). It takes awhile, but solves the entire problem. Interestingly, the only thing it noticeably changes is setting Outlook as the default calendar in the Internet Settings/Program menu if it hadn’t been left that way in earlier fiddling escapades. All other data and settings are left untouched.

It could be that this was entirely related to having had ActiveSync 4.0 (feel free to experiment and report back regarding earlier versions). But my instinct is that similar incidents occur whenever the de facto use of Outlook is violated regardless of whether there is an actual necessity. Perhaps this is a product of ill intent, or merely a safety measure to prevent data corruption and error. But given the ease of SmartphoneNotes synchronization, I suspect the latter to not be the case.

Anyways, a brief summary:
1) Outlook well-behaved and okay with sharing.
2) ActiveSync is a bully that tolerates no alternatives to 100% Outlook.
3) Disabling one of Outlook’s abilities is enough to deny ActiveSync to them all, save SmartphoneNotes and any other data independent from Microsoft’s syncing firmware.
4) Use the repair function of the installation CD. A harmless and complete fix.

In the thread regarding how to do this in the Smartphone Customization's original thread about customizing the 'contact' key, pzee posted:

CODE
KeyCode      Keypad Key
13  Action
37  Left
38  Up
39  Right
40  down
48 - 57  0 to 9
114  Talk (Green button)
115  End (Red Button)
91  Home
27  Back
121  Record
128  Flip
129  Power
117  Vol Up
119  Star
120  Pound/Sharp
118  Vol Down
112  Menu 1
113  Menu 2  <---- RIGHT SOFT KEY  aka "Contacts"

The xBar Manual gives a similar list. However, where are these lists originally from?

And aren't there more 'keys' than this those listed? How do we assign long-presses, and other unusuals? In my ROM (AT&T Audiovox SMT5600), holding down the Home key shortcuts to my favourite list, which I would love to change. I assume it can be done, since xBar somehow manages to assign itself the long-press of the action key.

Let's expand this tweak to cover a bit more than just the right softkey, eh? Perhaps we can even assign other tricks, using more than just '(Default)' and 'Open'.

QUOTE(the jigga man @ Jun 9 2005, 16:48)
how do i app unlock the phone? and i can only send via BT with smart explorer 2.0+??
*

(1) I am on my second SMT 5600, and have found that neither it nor its predicessor needed to be application unlocked. My general impression seems to be that the earlier releases of the Typhoon were called 'c500' by Orange (a service provider). One of their flaws was that they were 'application locked', meaning that non-certified software could not be installed. However, when ATT released their version of the Typhoon - ie, the 'Audiovox SMT 5600' - they removed the pesky feature. I have no idea if the new cingular version is suddenly being produced application-locked, but I doubt it. Get started downloading already!

(2) The easiest way to locate a file is through a file browser, a bit like how you browse for files in Windows XP (et al). There are three main options:
[i] Use the built-in File Manager. Use Menu -> 5 (Send) -> 2 (Beam). Then fiddle around and hope you have your BT (BlueTooth) settings properly calibrated.
[ii] Use Resco Explorer. I have it installed, but don't use it much. Glancing over it, I saw only IR (infrared) support, but given that they are trying to sell it for money, I am sure there is BT capability built in.
[iii] Use SmartExplorer. I use this, and generally love it. I haven't tried BT yet; the Typhoon and other BT-enabled products apparently are still rather novel here in America, giving me very few opportunities to try!

Hope this helps.

P.S. If you do have a new Cingular version, I am sure there are plenty of us here willing to test out these sorts of questions were somebody such as yourself (hint, hint) to extract their ROM.

(Sorry I am commenting a few months after the fact. This is my first post here, so I have an excuse for being behind the curve!)

I am unsure if this would make a difference, but I noticed that you have the following in your Feb 25 post of the cab:

Although the installer could be ignoring the "\\Home\" in the third line that I posted, I wouldn't give it the benefit of the doubt.

This could possibly explain your comment that "it shows the startup graphic rather than the shutdown one" on Feb 18. I haven't had a chance to install it yet, so I could very well just be drudging up old/unimportant information.

Out of curiousity, where can I find a good .cab creator, especially one that can allow me to install files and edit the registry? Please excuse me if there is an easy-to-find page; I have done a few searches and come up with nothing.

I am about to hard reset again (and probably again afterwards), and have a few things that I would rather not have to manually go and change again and again. Sprite is great if you are a person who has the money and who wants EVERYTHING backed up, but I am neither of those people right now!
