To get rid of the orange crap. I use and different operator. Orange are the ones who have played with the phone not qtek, I want it the way it was when it came out of the factory.

Aha, understood. If I installed the qtek rom would I get the critical Mobile2Market root certificate that Orange thought fit to leave out and thereby make it impossible to load all sorts of useful applications, like PhatNotes.

I can see that some of the Orange menu items are quite superfluous and intrusive but to instal this QTEK rom just to alleviate some Orange issues appears to be at some costs since it adds some language related problems.

Why is this change worth it? Is this not just an anti-orange motivated change?

The HTC Hurricane was a strange model released as there were very few updates for the device, it only came in 3 varients which made a change and they were the Orange C550, the T-mobile SDAII UK and like you say the Qtek 8200.

After reading through various posts I haven't found an answer as to why anybody would want to change the ROM in their Orange C550. What's the point?

Without this Mobile2Market (M2M) certificate it seems impossible to run any of the useful PC-Mobile note syncing applications such as Microsoft OneNote, PhatNotes or SmartphoneNotes.

Is there a registry hack that will either add the Mobile2Market certificate or render in unnecessary?

Can Orange add the certificate?

Can I load a different firmware to make the handset a vanilla Hurricane instead of an Orange C550 (WM2003/SE)?

Orange SPV C550 running WM 2003
ActiveSync 4.5 (Beta), also tried v4.2
OneNote Mobile 2007
Windows XP fully updated

I am trying to get Microsoft OneNote 2007 running with my Orange C550 but the ActiveSync, although listing the OneNote item, shows no checkbox to the left of the item, the settings button is greyed, and it does not copy any items relating to OneNote. I have Office 2003 installed and Outlook synchronises quite happily with ActiveSync to the handset.

Has anybody here managed to get OneNote 2007 working on a C550?

I am struggling getting a warranty with my C550. I have the usual joystick problem but also the headset does not work properly. Orange told me that the headset was not supported by them despite it being in the package that Orange supplier when I bought the handset.

I have a fault with my C550 and wondered if anybody has a geographic telephone number for the manufacturer HTC? Orange seemed to tell me that the manufacturer was SPV ??

Yes, that 'G' remains there. I wonder if there is a registry entry to change the Messenger timeout?

Messenger auto signs out after five minutes as standard on mobiles....i think its so the data charges stay low!

Do you know if this 5 minute timeout is a function of the MS Messenger software, or the GPRS. i.e. If I ran the utility suggested above to ping at regular intervals would that change things?

Thanks for the information. What a nuisance it is though. Surely on GPRS an inactive messenger would be a low data user anyway? Perhaps they don't want people hanging on messenger as they will lose revenue from SMS!

Does anybody know of a patch that changes this behaviour?

Has anybody found any settings or a workaround to keep the C550 online under GPRS so that MS Messenger can remain active? I have variously tried (under data connections / options) GPRS timeout settings of 'NONE', 'Never and '10 mins' but whatever I choose messenger signs out after 5 minutes.

I have a new C550 arriving today and having removed the SIM card and the storage card I find that the handset still has all my contacts in it, somewhere.

How do I copy this data into a new handset and delete it from the one that is to be returned to Orange?

My plan also, but as it seems like a design fault I am not too encouraged to return it if it is only to be replaced with another bad-by-design product, so I may wait for the maximum allowable time before returning it (provided it is manageably working) so that the unit is replaced by a unit that has properly addressed the design defect.

My joystick is failing too. I thought my handset CPU was being overloaded when some menu actions seemed to be slow to respond, then realised that it was a failing 'south' direction on my joystick. If I press quite firmly I can make it work but it is clearly faulty.

I would love to lose some of the junk pre-installed on the C550 but these item you mention are just shortcuts of a few bytes, their corresponding apps are not (auto startup) running. I don't see how this method will achieve anything but reduce the number of visible apps listed?

You mean the screenprinted logo on the plastic facia? You could try acetone (nail varnish remover) but be very careful, it could damage the plastic also.

...why not look into xml coding? Its not at all hard when you get the just of it. Just take a look at other peoples work and with a bit of common sense you can work out what each tag does. (For examples of WM5.0 homescreens made using xml go to Kleinweders Site Here biggrin.gif)
You can also create more complex homescreens using other plug ins such as Smart Monitor, Facade and the Orange Plug in for those Orange users. Enough blabbing... sorry ive gone off topic a bit laugh.gif
*

I am also new to this but as my name suggest I am a coder so have no fear of XML. I didn't see anything on the Kleinweders of a technical nature, just examples of his work. How would I go about creating a homescreen and then compiling the XML and images into the required .hme file? Do you have a link?

Can you give a small review of Smart Monitor, Facade and the Orange Plug (plug-in to what?) please.

I spent a little time looking for a homescreen designer but few seem to handle the QVGA screen res.

Has anyone tried any very large mini-sd devices in the SPV C550? I would like to install a 2GB part if I can find one.

What is the maximum capability of the C550 to handle the sd card?

Orange SPV C550

Can anyone tell me what can safely be deleted from the 500MB storage card of my new C550 so that I can free more memory?

There seem to be a few apps and Orange promotional software items that I would be glad to lose. Is it just a matter of deleting those files/folders from ActiveSync browser or is it like Windows for PC where apps will spawn related files all over the handset memory in locations wuch as win system folders etc?

Any suggestions of how to strip this mobile handset to be free of clutter?

u mean there are no contacts when u go to contacts or Sim Manager?

No, I mean that when I insert the new SIM card then no contacts show under the START/CONTACTS item, where they previously had been transferred to, and showed, whilst the old SIM was installed. Does that make sense? Sorry of I am explaining this badly.

As an alternative method I am also trying to find a hack by using ActiveSync but that seems too clever and I think it will only transfer items that have been changed or added. I really don't want to have to edit every single old SIM card contact just to get this simple transfer of contacts from the old to my new SIM, or old SIM to new 'contacts database'.

Whatever method, I don't care where my contacts get transferred to as long as I can see them with the new SIM card installed, which presently I cannot get to happen.

I am sure this should be simple but on inserting my very old SIM card into my C550 and using SIM manager to copy from the SIM into 'contacts'. Then I check that all the data is present under 'contacts', even after a handset switch off/on.

Next I insert the new, greater capacity SIM card, switch on the mobile and find that there are no contacts showing.

So my question is how do I copy the contacts from the old SIM card to a new one using the C550?

Installing the SMARTGPS.EXE into my SPV C550 and running it seems to put the mpbile into a loop of sorts. The SMARTGPS_README.TXT file supplied says to make sure OpenNetCF is installed, but how would I check that? And if it were not there is a CAB file supplied which presumaly will install the OpenNetCF, but what do I do with that CAB file?

OK, I am new here but could not find an answer on searching the forum.

I would like to know what I am supposed to do with applications that are apparently suitable for the SPV C550 but are presented just as a single file. One of these is a .CAB and the other has a .APP file extension, these are not related applications but I can't figure what to do with either.

Please can somebody explain what I am supposed to do with these files?
