HTC Diamond currently. Next device will be whatever can deliver: * Small form factor * GPS * Fast OS experience Ok, so that's the Diamond, which I'm extremely happy with! I think about the only thing that's gonna shift me is a capactive screen with the kinda instant reaction you get from iPhone. Pretty close to it using the ASTOR ROM. |

For what it's worth, very little I suspect, one of the major reasons you can't have broadcasting devices on board airplanes is because they cause havoc with the cells below them. Travelling at a few hundred miles an hour, you get into a new cell every few seconds, just enough time for the cell to say hi, begin processing you in before realising you're gone again. Imagine groups of 3-400 people all doing this in sync. If anyone seriously believes that planes are badly enough wired, shielded and insulated to mean radio interference on licensed spectrums would be an issue... Well, if I believed it, I certainly wouldn't be willing to get in one. |

Still happier with my Diamond - form factor is it's killer app - been ages since I could have a phone so small that works so well - especially using the TOR SpeedUP ROM - and really - how big a screen do you need on a cellphone? This is obviously nothing to do with other HTC devices, it's purely a competitor to the iPhone. One thing that would be nice is if they settled on some features though - not much hope of the virtual scrollwheel being picked up in software much if it's not supported across the range, nor the accelerometer. Nice having the former working for google maps, but mostly they're both wasted. |

lol, my diamond would last about 30 mins without power on full time GPS! Not sure I see the use personally. I think a bigger battery and a proper 'sportstracker' as mentioned above might have some mileage though. |

For those with T-Mobile MDA Compact IV, you might be interested to know that it does fit in the Brodit Diamond mount, but its quite a tight fit, certainly won't fall out! I'm a little concerned that it might wear the edges of the phone down, but it does slide smoothly...in a tight way I'm not sure how this compares to the Diamond fitting in the mount. anyone? The Diamond fits into it's Brodit mount pretty tightly too - enough so that I can insert the USB charger single handedly without pushing hte Diamond out of the mount. |

I've tried copying files over manually and copying over using WMP10, and neither show up in touchflo - they do in the library. I guess it's no big loss from the above comments, it'd just be nice to have something there when I went to the music tab of TF3D |

I have an admission to make - I recently knowingly accepted a HTC Diamond with the intention of using it until the iPhone 3G came out on PAYG. My deliberate intention at that point was to sell the Diamond on eBay and purchase an iPhone 3G. I plead guity m'lrd I've been with WinMo for a long time now - since the Orange SPV (check my uber join date/number to the left Then I got the Diamond. Finally - they've made a decently quick, responsive, good looking very useable phone. My push email has worked flawlessly, my GPS works fine, the UI almost always responds to touch immediately. I had intended to use it for a few weeks (taking very good care of it, unusual for me!), then sell it as 'pretty much new'. No need now - this neat little device is, overall, on a par with the iPhone. It's got it's ups and downs, every device does. It's not QUITE as responsive, but it's close enough - especially since I can have proper sat nav, won't need to run iTunes etc.. All in all, well done HTC - my faith is restored. I think the only two WM phones that I felt good about that I've owned were the C500 and the original SPV. They were good for their time, the Diamond is good for now. |

Mind you, unless you're a fan of out of date maps and useless POI databases, I'd go for Tomtom - Copilot really showed me how useless it was when I bought the US maps and went there only to discover that it's very out of date and apparently will get updated when CoPilot 8 gets released. Oh, and the software you need to run to update it won't run on 64 bit operating systems. They claim to be aware, but don't appear to be fixing anything. And the traffic system is almost completely useless due to implementation (the junction on which you're coming off the motorway has had an accident, don't worry - you'll be coming off then, it won't affect you), and partially due to really incomplete data. |

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but on T-Mobile with a Vario III, this appears to have a negative effect on the radio - I'm struggling to place outgiong calls sometimes, just geting 'failed to place call' type errors or even nothing at all happening. |

I do hope you'll be mentioning that MS has about 3-6 months to sort out their OS or risk a mass exodus to iPhone. Reminded of it again today while I was waiting for my Vario III to catch up with my typing so I could go back and insert the characters that it would inevitibly miss out on. Oh and when I was last trying to browse the net in garbled, screwed up web pages that load slowly and hang endlessly. |

End of 2008? Getting to be too-little-too-late? I just don't get how it wasn't done a few months after the iPhone demonstrated how web browsing should be. Hell, even the Wii browser beats the speed and inconvenience I suffer on my Vario III. What does it matter if you've got 2G or 3G if the results can't be rendered anyway? |

Wow - this is killer app territory. My view is that from my VarioII/III experience 3G is a red herring - it's such a drain on battery that, especially combined with push email, it's useless. <24 battery life. As for MMS - seriously, who cares? The only reason I'd use MMS is because it's cheaper when abroad than an SMS, but that's just a temporary marketing trick. iPhone is getting there - it's a nice looking device, nice form factor and becoming a nice feature set. Especially with the SDK opening up now. Developer question, if you could sell your app and get 70% of it's sale value with no other sale expenses, would you switch? Seems like a pretty good deal to me. On the flipside - £269 + full contract costs? Seriously overpriced, can't wait till everyone else catches up - just wish they'd realise they have to. |

This time round the Orbit 2 is based on HTC's Polaris, which includes the sexy Touchflo interface. A nice (identical?) alternative to the HTC Touch Cruise and a nod to O2 for including Copilot in the bundle! I thought the Orbit2 WAS the Touch Cruise - if not, what's the difference between that and the Polaris? HTC aren't giving their phones two names internally now are they? Looking it at google - it seems as if Polaris was an earlier name for the same phone pre-release (for however that might be defined in HTC's OEM world!) Just got my Kaiser and wondering if it's the phone for me or if I should return it and hang on till this comes out on T-Mobile. Hell, throw the Asus Galaxy Mini into the mix and it looks awfully crowded section of the WM market... |

Just to prove to me that the world of mobile phones is still as nutty as ever.... I don't consider myself a high user - bill is from 30-50/month, usually the lower end. So, I called t-mobile retentions to see what they had to say, half wondering if they'd be doing the Touch Cruise (which does look pretty good to me)... Spoke to someone who, after a bit of bargaining, though not much, is sending me a Vario III for a fiver P&P and reducing my monthly for Flext25+WnW to £12.50 (from £27.50). 18 month contract, but to be honest, @12.50/month, it'd be viable to pick up a second contract if there was a phone I REALLY wanted! Thanks for the advice guys, looks like I'm staying with the 'housebrick' form factor. Hope it's not even bigger or my wife will laugh me out of the house. Every year her phone gets smaller (currently about the size of a lipstick, the Samsung X830, I can't wait to see how it's gonna get smaller next year!), and mine gets bigger. Thanks again, I'll bump this post in 18 months time |

2) T gave me £15/month off my contract as I didn't want a new phone - if you're happy with your VII it might be an option? Hmm, only problem with that offer is that it ties you into 18 months, which sucks a bit! I'm still hanging onto the 12th month contracts as tightly as I can! |

Thanks for the suggestion jimbo. I don't suppose anything's come out that's a little smaller? Something else has just occurred to me - have the other networks (not t-mobile) caught up with their data plans? I guess I use 100MB/month or so. Hell, if the entirety of the benefit from an upgrade is 'a little quicker', I might just get some nice company to send me a Wii and some junk phone instead! Although inbuilt GPS would be nice, the external unit I have has some nice logging features and a solar recharge so it's not all benefits. Must pop onto the Kaiser forum and see what the deal is regarding these drivers/class actions. I've not been paying much attention. Any other suggestions? |

OK, I admit to having slightly lost touch with what phone does what in the past 18 months. I have had the SPV, the SPV E200, the SPV C500 and finally the T-Mobile MDA Vario II (oh, and there's a Virgin Lobster here for emergencies!). The contract is up on the Vario II today and I guess I'll get myself something new. My question is, what do you suugest? The only REAL important feature (other than being able to make calls, bluetooth and all the usual stuff which is always there), is that I should be able to run a good sat-nav on it. I currently have Tomtom using an external GPS, something internal would be nice, but wouldn't be the end of the world should I not be able to. I don't use 3g (battery life reasons, so if they're solved maybe), I don't use wireless (to be honest, GPRS is fine 99.9% of the time). What suggestions do you have? |

How are people linking to their bluetooth GPS? Using a fixed serial port? It's a bit crap at latching onto my GPS sometimes. For what it's worth - in the outer suburbs, driving around the local area I've picked up 1250 points or so over a few days. I think I'd need a significant trip out to rack up enough points to actually get paid. Wonder how long they'll continue that pricing structure. Seems pretty generous for those of you in London/NY etc, especially as the big "money" is for cell towers, which rarely change, or at least if they do they could probably get a better source of information for them! |
