I've got to admit that is a nice device - I've had a HTC TYTN for ages, and really like the hardware keyboard - the touch screen I use far less, so I could easily lose that.

That phone looks very nice, and has nothing show stopping missing off the feature set!

Still unless it arrives before a Network subsidised Touch Pro I'll probably get that.

Looks like it'll be pretty square when slid closed, which in my experience doesn't make it very pocket-friendly.
I guess we'll have to wait and see!

I Like how they say "Make sure your memory card has enough space, click here to buy a 2GB memory card" when the device is a Touch Diamond...

I've noticed that the Touch Diamond is available on play.com (stock expected 13/06) - at a fair bit cheaper than expansys - £429.99 vs £494.95!

Oooooo shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiney, and guess what - my contract on my MDA 2 has just run out!

I definitely think I'll be getting one of those puppies just as soon as t-Mob will sell me one biggrin.gif

The 640 X 480 screen is the real boon - maybe RDP will actually be usable now?

QUOTE(Syphon Filter @ Nov 11 2007, 10:42) *
Yeah, I know what you are saying. The spoken road names is not really too much of an issue to me, I didnt even realise it was in CP6???

I believe the traffic updates do work in the UK, at least they used to with my CP6. They cost £35 for two years subscription. I havnt bothered yet as I never really used it much on CP6.

The speed camera database is naff, you're better off using CamerAware (Paul, I'll take a royalty for that tongue.gif) or getting a the PocketGPSworld camera database and integrating that into your CP7, I believe Phil Lee has done it so he can help you with instructions.

Overall though, CP7 is really quite good. I like it much more than CP6, the GUI is infintely better and its defintely a little quicker to load etc. I really like it.

Thanks for the reply - I'm aware of the downloadable traffic updates, which I'm told works ok - I was more interested in TMC, which can be picked up by your GPS receiver directly if it is compatible and has a good enough antenna. Saves you data costs, and in theory shouldn't have any recurring cost associated with its use.

Not that its likely to be directly important i guess -my GPS receiver from my old Co-pilot prob doesn't support TMC, and Im not likely to bother to replace it while it still works! If the speed camera database is too naff then yea - best just use CamerAware. £10 one off (modaco plus) including updated databases is cheaper (and easier to keep up to date) than PocketGPSworld - and it seems to play nicely with other GPS software running (trial/non spoken version did with the Maporama trial anyway - both ran together ok.)

Might just wait and see a bit longer. Looks like CP7 is probably the best of the current crop, but id rather buy one that'll last me a while, so if there's a better version of iGo coming out soon, or CP7 is going to require expensive upgrades to add useful features (text-to-speech) then I'd rather wait. I don't travel a huge amount anyway.

Cool biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info

I'm still trying to decide whether to go for CP7 (I have an old version, so should be eligible for the discounted upgrade) or something else.
Free speed cameras is good as is the new interface.

However I'm very wary of the fact that they've removed the spoken road names in this version, to be reintroduced "soon".
Also I'd like to know about the traffic updates - the description page (http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/default.asp) mentions TMC updates. Do you know if this works in the UK and if so is it free/cheap?

It slightly irritates me that they don't have a download version, as the 1GB microSD card is pretty useless (id just copy it to my 2GB one), and id rather save the money on the card + shipping

This isn't Mobile XT!

I have a POI Loader, i'll have to ask them re: distribution tho.

Doh, there was me not reading the initial news post properly smile.gif

Thanks Paul - that would be useful!

As far as the UK map download goes - yesterday I downloaded the maps by just substituting uk.zip for united_kingdom.zip as the link points to.

I've given it a go, and it seems pretty decent (especially for the price!)

Shame it doesn't seem to support full 7 digit postcode search.

1 problem I noticed was the "Yes" and "No" button functionality was reversed (eg it asks "are you sure you want to delete this favourite?" and pressing "no " deletes it, and yes cancels! This is easily fixed by editing the English.lang file in a text editor though.

Has anyone managed to get it to load the PGPSW speed camera database? I tried using the POI Loader from Garmin ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=927 ) as it says it supports Windows mobile devices with Garmin Mobile XT, and this is essentially the same, but it kept saying no device found!

Browsing the Register today I noticed that a UK company, Blue Sky Positioning has somehow managed to get a GPS receiver, including the antenna onto a SIM card!

Apparently this clever trickery is done using A-GPS technology, so most of the processing load is offloaded (possibly to an assistance server over the mobile network), however the feat shrinking the rest of the GPS circuitry to fit into a SIM is pretty impressive!

The company already says it has prototypes, and is aiming for production samples to be ready in July.

The idea of being able to upgrade any phone to gain GPS capability just by swapping the SIM card sounds extremely cool smile.gif

Looks like a very tempting device - The camera in my hermes is particularly poor in low light/indoors, so it'd be interesting to see how this compares.
Unfortunately I probably can't afford to buy one right now, and I still have a year left on my contract... sad.gif

Any ideas on what I can go for or a quick update on the Smartphone/PPC phone scene?

Cheers

The Qtek 8500 / imate SmartFlip / HTC StrTRK is amongst the best (only?) current WM5 flip-phones on sale.
You can get it sim free for £200 from expansys - less if you take out a Voda or 02 contract with it.

Hi - From Settings, click the tab for System, click on Clock & Alarm - I assume you have been here to set the alarm times - if you click on the 'bell' symbol you will be given a choice of alarm sounds and the option to flash the light and vibrate.
Cheers...

Yup quite good, and you can set them to only go off on weekdays etc.
Only problem is that it needs to be able to be put into 5min snooze mode by clicking right button and then selecting the option from the popup menu.

I'd have prefered it so its just hit anywhere on the main part of the screen for snooze closedeyes.gif
If anyone knows a way of doing this, or a replacement alarm clock for this purpose let me know smile.gif

£215 sounds a little steep.. hardly budget is it?

I'd agree with that - Given that you can get the (IMHO) much sexier, + better screen equiped Qtek 8500 for only £30 more from the same site I know which I'd go for!

When I heard budget I was thinking ~£150 sim free or less even...

I called T-Mobile this evening to get an upgrade price for the Vario II on one of the Relax plans plus WnW. Told that it would be in the region of £290 for the handset!! I could take out a new connection - assuming the cost is a lot cheaper as indicated by some here -- and then transfer the PAC to a PAYGO and then back again. However, has anyone managed to get a decent cost for an upgrade to the Vario II?

I got quoted something similar this evening - £289.99 on Flext20 + W&W upgrade. The best he could offer was £10 off the bill for the first 2 months.

Seems somewhat pricey still. I'll consider the PAC code to another's PayG and then back onto a new contract trick.

I disagree - looks pretty nice to me + its a little bit unique when everyone else has the RAZR

Anyways now need to decide if I buy one from expansys (about a 1/2 hr drive for me) or not.
Probably depends on whether I can persuade a network to give me a cheap M3100 / Vario II or not. smile.gif

If not then I'll have this for my gadget fix!

I notice that there is a news item on theregister.co.uk about the new Smartphone's that Orange are bringing out....

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/07/17/or...hones_revealed/

"Orange's upcoming smart phones got an airing this weekend, revealing the carrier will be bringing Samsung's QWERTY keyboard-equipped, 3G-connected Windows Mobile 5.0 device, the i320, on board."

No mention of WHERE they got the airing, no link to Modaco, and they got it wrong with the i320 too (as we know the device that Orange will be supplying is actually the Samsung BlackJack!)

6:6:6 6th June... hm... Will the world end according to timezone - so New Zealand and the far East perish first, and then oblivion jumps to each timezone in the next hour until the entire world exists no more.... or will the entire world use our (obviously correct) timezone to measure their annihilation?
