You could use PhoneAlarm to switch profiles based on location (including Wifi SSID). It can switch the send/received frequency depending on the profile in use. Check it out. |

I have recently moved to New Zealand and now have an NZ vodafone prepay sim in my phone. Checking the balence on this is slightly more long winded than I'm used to as o2 is simply *#10# which I set as a speed dial. With vodafone there is 3 ways to check the balance: 1) phoning up the freephone number and going through a sequence of keypresses. 2) using the vodafone live! application from the sim card which eventually sends a text message with the balance. 3) texting bal to 777 which texts back the balance amount. out of all of them it seems 3 is the quickest if i could somehow find someway to setup the text message being prefilled with subject and receipient. then i would just need to set a button to send it. does anyone know of a way i can do this? Have a look at Mortscript. I believe you can set it up to send a text (or do it via keypresses/menu commands), and then you could associated that with an icon on your start menu. |

WTF? You have to pay for POP3? Why would anyone use hotmail then, when Gmail is so much better? !?!? |

I have set me sky and BT Internet to automatically send and receive every 30 mins but Windows Live settings do not give me this option - canit be done any other way? Thanks Hotmail probably has the ability to download your email to a POP3 client, so you could just set up a POP account on your handset and have it download every 30 mins. They might even support IMAP. I have no idea as I use gmail. |

Just to follow up on this thread, it seems that WM6.1 has a "severe" (Microsoft's words, not mine) bug with SMTP, which means that an email account can become permanently corrupted so it will no longer send email until it's deleted and recreated. Details here: http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index....6-1-smtp-issues http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsMobile/...5&SiteID=65 |

I don't use the GPS with PA, as the CellID has enough resolution for me (and on the occasions it doesn't, I'd be indoors so GPS wouldn't work anyway). Your best bet would be to hop over to the forums and mention your issues to Bruce/Penguin (the guy who wrote PA) - he'll get a log from you and may be able to fix it if it's something ROM-specific.... |

PhoneAlarm doesn't store the settings on the storage card. If you're using v2.0, you need to go to Settings->Profiles->Right softkey->Backup/Restore and save the settings to your storage card. Although it's probably too late for you now. :| Just to really annoy you, I actually hard-reset my device on Friday (it kept freezing... |

Unfortunately, a lot of the criticisms here are problems with WM5/6/6.1, rather than with the Kaiser itself. It astounds me that Microsoft STILL haven't got a replacement OS for WM which solves the problems of random hangs, missed keypresses and GUI unresponsiveness. And by the looks of it, WM7 isn't going to fix any of these either. Only Android appear to be addressing all those problems but without an anal application certification process, with proper process management for background apps, and with a decent hardware platform that has options like a hardware keyboard. Let's be honest, HTC have the capability to build the hardware, and Apple have the nice UI, but only google appear to be able to actually get both right. Let's just hope Android and the Dream (and subsequent Android handsets) aren't a massive disappointment when they come out. |

On any device, there are only three reasons for a hard reset: 1) You are getting rid of it and want to wipe it 2) You've mucked the device up and cant work out how to get it back working. 3) You want to try it without the network customisation (ie hard reset and then soft reset before the customisation starts) 4) You want to give the device a new lease of life. Hard-resetting usually gives (back) a huge performance increase and makes everything quick and snappy again. |

I wonder whether you have some bad memory etc in your device? I've had my Kaiser for over 12 months and never had any problems with speed. It's as quick as when I first got it. Admittedly, I'm very careful about installing 'crap' on my device, and only have a set of particular apps which I install (repeatedly installing/removing stuff does clog it up and cause problems). I'm also not sure about the comment you made about it taking so long to hard reset. I hard-reset about every 3 months, just to keep things ticking along nicely. I have a folder on my storage card with all my apps, and a text file with the licence keys. I literally just work from top to bottom through the CABs. Stuff like tomtom just resides on the storage card anyway, so doesn't even need re-installing, and settings for most apps (e.g., PhoneAlarm, MortPlayer, etc) are exported to the storage card. I reckon I can go from hard-reset to fully-configured device with all my apps and settings restored in about 35 minutes. I am, however, considering what device I might want next. It's difficult, because unlike when I was waiting for the Kaiser (and there was no other device with decent memory, keyboard, GPS, etc) there are lots of similar devices out there but no major technological steps up from what the Kaiser already does/has. Okay, so the touch pro has a better styling, more memory/cpu and a VGA screen, but that's not enough for me to bother upgrading. The iPhone is just no good for me. Putting aside my natural prejudices against it for a moment, the idea of a device with no keyboard, no cut'n'paste, no background apps (so I can't run my IM client in the background, and can't have PhoneAlarm type functionality) is just a non-starter for me. Which is a shame, as the GUI is very slick. However, the only advantage the iPhone has (other than being shiny) is the GUI and that gap is closing fast (see the Touch Pro's GUI, the Xperia, and Android). T-Mobile will be first to carry the Android Dream, and it looks like it could be a very interesting prospect. The OS looks good, the device has what I need (GPS + keyboard are the killer features for me). Not sure about the styling though - I hate white devices.
We'll see what Android is like when it's released, but my suspicion is that the 2nd/3rd devices will be the ones which really tempt me away from the "devil I know" PocketPC devices. In the meantime, I may well just stick with the Kaiser and see what happens... |

Also turn off "Allow USB Connection" I thought you'd hit the nail on the head there. But no. Doing that actually completely disables the USB connection altogether, so I don't have any ActiveSync connection at all..... I have "This computer is connected to..." set to "Work Network". |

If you have a connection like this you can have a Drive letter. If you have a drive letter you can get information about files, run them from the card drive and use lots of little utilities like synctoy, batch files and robocopy. And if you don't have activesync installed, you can access your files. |

I connect my Kaiser to my work PC to sync my meetings so I don't forget where I'm supposed to be. However, my work LAN is locked down so I can't sync my device email across the LAN. I'd like to have it so that my device will connect to the 'net over GPRS whilst it's connected, so it still gets email updates every 30 minutes while connected. But it doesn't work - it gives a connection failure and only downloads email if I specifically disconnect from the USB cable and then hit send/receive. I have the "Allow wireless connection on the device when connected to the desktop" option checked in Activesync, but it appears to make no difference. It's really annoying to have to periodically disconnect my device to see if I have any email. Any ideas? |

Anyone had any problems with the IMAP4 implementation on WW6? Whenever I receive an attachment I just get a corrupt file and the body text of the message saying "BODY.PEEK[2]". Not sure whether it's my mail provider or the phone itself... |

Being slightly more blunt, what would be the point? You want an iPhone? Buy an iPhone. |

you can set a hardware or screen button to turn it into car mode - though you have to remember to do this when getting into the car. (and then deliberately not drive past work otherwise it will change your profile back to work mode!) Ah, well, not if you configure it right. I have a mortscript which runs TomTom, and also executes paWakeup.exe to switch it into 'Car' profile, locking the profile, so that when I'm driving past work, or arrive at my house, it remains in 'Car' mode. When I quit Tomtom, the mortscript then unlocks the profile, and PA automatically switches to the correct profile depending on where I am. It's very slick. |

I tried 'em over the weekend. The OpenGL demo is very pretty, but since they're only 3D drivers, they don't really help in any real-world situation. I half-wondered if TT6 was running smoother (I wasn't sure if it rendered using D3D or OGL) but nope. |

PhoneAlarm ... another recommendation here. Also I've been advised that it has location based awareness, so it can "understand" that you are at work, and for example put the phone into a more sensible ring tone, quieter alerting, no wifi etc. Of if it realised you are at home, it can put the phone into Home mode and turn off 3g but activate wireless for example. Yep. And it also has the ability to trigger on other hardware-related events, such as being put into a cradle, having the headset attached (e.g., when I plug my RC W100 headset in, it automatically launches my music player). |

I fixed it but not sure how I reentered every option in the account details and copied this from my laptop and desktop machines but still no go. In frustration I deleted the account off the phone and did a fresh install using the same exact data and it now works. I've had that a few times. It's very annoying but appears to have stabilised too. Are you using Voda? If you're having trouble sending over gprs using an smtp server which isn't send.vodafone.net, occasionally their network rejects it. It's a PITA and documented in my thread elsewhere on this forum. |

How's that work then? Not that it would do me much good, since I work at home. But the ability to recognise certain locations would be cool. It's very neat. PA sets up 'Location Groups', so you can have a group for 'Office', 'Home', etc. You add known locations to the groups - these can be CellIDs, WLAN SSIDs, Cell broadcast locations or, if your device supports it, GPS areas (with a predefinable range, e.g., "within 100m of this GPS location"). Once you've set up your location group, you can then trigger profile switches by certain actions, such as "Enter office" or "Leave home". PA listens for CellID/GPS/WLAN notifications, and then triggers these rules as applicable. For example, I have it set up so that: - When I arrive in the vicinity of my office, my phone switches to silent wifi off, etc - When I arrive in the vicinity of my home, my phone switches to vibrate, wifi on, etc. - When I leave either of these vicinities (e.g., I'm out & about) my screen brightness increases, rinnger is enabled, wifi is off, etc. It's so much better than time-based profile switching, because if I take a day off, or leave work early or late, they still kick in, whereas this actually changes my phone behaviour based on where I am. I believe in the latest version you can combine time and location-switching rules, so that I could have different settings for home during the week, and home at weekends, etc. But I don't use that. |
