As well as the obvious stuff like closing unused apps and keeping wifi/BT etc off unless using them, try this too - it may sound daft/obvious, but doesn't seem to have been covered in previous posts, and helps for me and everyone else I know with a Diamond.

After locking the device and the screen dimming, the screen will not go completely dark if pressure is applied to it (test using your thumb), so before putting it into its case, wait for the screen to go completely dark as the case can (and 99% of the time does) supply sufficient pressure to the screen to keep the screen on, which uses considerably more power. I know we shouldn't have to do this, but it does help, and is'nt too much of a pain.

If you forget to do this, you may get lucky and find that the screen turns off in the case anyway (which is very, very rare) so in order to aid this try the following:
if you feel inside your case for where the 'ribbon' (which forms the base of the case) is attached, you should notice that at one side it sticks out a bit, but at the other side it is pretty much flush with the case - always make sure your screen is to the flush side, as the other 'sticky-out' side applies more pressure to the screen and is pretty much guaranteed to keep the screen on.

Doing this, I've gone from about 12 hours of life to more like between 24-36 hours, without changing my usage. Definitely worth it in my opinion.

I hope this helps you a bit more smile.gif

EDIT - Actually I should have said after locking the device, just press the power button to switch the screen of rather than waiting for it to happen 30/40 secs later - much more convenient!!

I can confirm that the same method is used for the C550 as the C600, though I have also set up a shortcut in my start menu soI don't have to go through Messaging to get to it.

thanks a lot guys,
it was the 'T9 settings' - 'my words' that i was looking for but i have since set up a start menu shortcut to it.I didnt even know that it could be done that way but it's sorted now at least - it was driving me crazy!!

I have an spv C550 and need to access the list of words that the predictive text dictionary has learned from me entering words it didnt previously know, so i can delete some of them, but I cannot remember at all how to find this. I know it is definately possible cos i have done it before but it was a long time ago + I've tried everything i can think of.
I'm probably missing something really obvious but can anyone shed any light on this for me?
Thanks,
wildcardspv.

Are you using the 2.5mm to 3.5mm converter that came with your C550? If you are, you have the exact same problem that I have. I have to hold the converter into the phone otherwise I lose sound in one earphone. I'm going to the Orange shop tonight after work to see if they'll replace it, which I doubt very much they'll do, but I'll keep you informed.

Cheers,

BS...

Hey man, i had the same problem with the convertor, but i found that when pushing it in, if i just pull the rubber cover away from the socket slightly, the convertor clicks into place that but firmer and maintains the connection a lot better, so both earphones work constantly.
Hope this helps.

Jrdas, it sounds like this may be the same problem but with the heaphones directly as opposed to through the convertor. If it isnt, and you're sure its not the headphones, try a hard reset, and if still no better, look at having the handset replaced if you have insurance/warranty as it may be faulty.

Good luck.

good luck

Hey guys, i work for Orange and there has been nothing siad internally about a wm5 update for the C550. i have the same phone too and am always checking for updates,
but,
Today there was a briefing in handset faults to say that if anyone tries to install WM5 onto their C550 and as a result it ruins the phone (which is apprently likely), then they will not be covered, even if they have care, and won't get a replacement. End of.

Shame I know, but my advice:
Don't do it man.

Hey guys, I work for Orange and have no idea why this is happening, but i have a C550 and I get the same error message to (.....verify you have network coverage and try again)

I found if I switch off, remove and replace the sim, and once its back on retry uploading/downloading my emails it works first time. A pain I know, but it seems to work until they gort it out properly.

Hope this helps some of you.

Does anyone know of a version of either of these games available which will run on the spv C550?
Music/SFX not important as long as the game speed is ok.
I've tried some versions but wolfenstein won't even start and doom runs incredibly slowly and both crash the phone.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thanks in advance peeps.

I have an SPV C550 on Orange UK and send many MMS messages.

Under start>>more>>more>>configurations>>mms settings>>press menu + select mmsc settings>>highlight orangemms + press edit,
you can amend the max sending size for a message but can only select either 30kb (what!!) or 100kb. Is anyone aware of any tweaks, or any other ways of increasing this as quite often my messages do go over 100kb. Many lesser handsets (eg- smasung d600) allow this setting to be increased to up to 300kb.

Any ideas appreciated guys,
Thanks,
Wildcardspv.

Can anyone tell me if i use 'theme generator for smartphone', or even just resize a pic on my pc for use as a homescreen, what size do i need to make the pic to fit my qvga screen on my C550 (on my spv e200 i used to use 176x200 pixels).

Thanks.

If all else fails, try opening task manager and closing the 'WCESCOMM.EXE' process. You will see the activesync icon disappear from your toolbar, but with some SPV apps the h/s can still be accessed via the cradle when this has been done.

BTW
have you tried a hard reset?

Firstly, great work on the emu for smartphone - I'd probably buy that once its available as i have many sms games for it. Its graphics and speed are fantastic and the sound is the best i've heard on any smartphone emu (also sound doesnt slow gameplay down)

A Desktop Pc version may be cool, however if you havent already, try to check out 'freezeSMS' which is an emu for master system/gamegear with great graphics and sound - in my opinion you'd have to improve on that.

Keep up the good work my friend.

Hey there buddy, I'm pretty new to posting in this forum so not sure what you tried a year ago, but have been an SPV user since the 1st SPV was released (currently on C550).

It may be worth trying this:

go to
http://www2.orange.co.uk/servlet/Satellite...ature&t=Product

and follow on screen instructions to download latest rom version for the E100 and install it to your handset.
As I understand it, the handset just needs power so it will switch on while in the cradle, even with no operating system.

Hope this helps you,

WildcardSPV.

DONE AND DUSTED!

after the various attempts to unlock spv's in the past, most of which never worked this method actually does, and was really easy once i got the application running.

Thanks a million guys, for saving me £20 and distributing such a useful app.

Keep 'em coming,

OKAY!!!

I didnt realise that when you run SPV services, it then connects to the internet.

As i have norton anti-virus, i tried disabling that and the unlock process then worked.

Anyone else having the same prob as me, try disabling your internet security/anti virus software.

Thanks.

I am currently trying to sim-unlock my Orange SPV C550.
According to this page
http://www.modaco.com/INFO_Decert_SIM_Unlo...50-t222786.html
it should work with a C550 as well as the C500

If anyone has tried the sim unlock tool 'SPV-Services Client' successfully, how long does it ususally take?

After successfully installing cert.cab to the phone and executing it (confirms installation successful), when I run SPV-Services.exe I just get an empty window, with an eggtimer and have so far left this for up to 30mins with no joy. sad.gif

Checking task manager it is still running (as opposed to not responding) so i was just wondering how long it should take for the application to open fully so as i can then sim unlock the handset.

Any help would be much appreciated guys,
Thanks.

QUOTE(Parallax20 @ Nov 29 2005, 15:04)
Hi everybody,

I've been hunting on the net for good console emulators for the smartphone and came across PicoDrive and PocketSNES. Unfortunately neither of these emulators worked properly on my C550.  So I decided to try and fix it so I could play my favourite games on my phone.

The biggest change is probably getting it to work at QVGA resolution, which was a definite improvement to the postage stamp size window.  After much tinkering, I think I've reached a milestone and am happy to share it with the rest of the community.

Disclaimer: These programs have been tested on my C550.  I hold no responsibility for any damage caused by running them on your own devices.

FileDialogSP.dll by STomski
PicoDrive (original source) by Dave @ finalburn.com
PocketSNES (original source) by SpaceMonkey
PocketGNUboy (original source) by ???
MameCE3 (original source) by Techmaster
PocketNester (original source) by Rick Lei

Fixes/Tweaks:

Update: Now works on all smartphones including QVGA screens

PicoDrive (Genesis) [attachment=17269:attachment]
-QVGA compatible in all screen modes.  (Portrait/Landscape)
-Integrated FileDialogSP.dll by STomski for ROM file selection.
-Game save/restore options
-Added key configuration screen
-Portait mode now uses full width of QVGA screen
- No sound

PocketSNES (Super Nintendo) [attachment=17045:attachment]
- QVGA compatible in all screen modes. (Portrait/Landscape)
- CPU cycle adjustment to increase game speed (lower value equals faster emulation)
- Game save/restore options
- Integrated FileDialogSP.dll by STomski for ROM file selection.
- Fixed screen freeze on startup.
- I have provided two version of the app in this archive.  Version 1.43 core app will have better compatibility but will only work on QVGA phones.  If you have trouble running this please refer to 1.39 version.
- No sound

PocketGnuboy (Gameboy Color) [attachment=17133:attachment]
- QVGA compatible in all screen modes. (Portrait/Landscape)
- Integrated FileDialogSP.dll by STomski for ROM file selection.
- Game save/restore options
- Added Extended Config Key option to redefine directional and game keys
- Fixed low res screen position offset
- Enabled GAPI draw mode by default and disabled option in Preferences screen.
- Sound enabled

MameCE3 (M.A.M.E) [attachment=17431:attachment]
- This is a fairly cut down version of the full Mame32.  It supports 200+ games but can be enabled for more depending on hardware emulated.
- To "OK" the legal notice screen use LEFT->RIGHT directional keys
- Added key configuration screen
- Fix default mame key quirks
- Game screen now shrinks to display size.  Some games may be difficult to view on low-res phones.
- Menu option to turn auto scaling on/off
- Improved screen scaling but still a bit slow.
- Use * and # to adjust frameskip rate.
- Added option to refresh game list
- Sound enabled - but nothing to get too excited about.
PocketNester (NES) [attachment=17206:attachment]
- QVGA compatible in all screen modes. (Portrait/Landscape)
- Integrated FileDialogSP.dll by STomski for ROM file selection.
- Game save/restore options
- Added key configuration screen
- Extended Sound options
- Sound enabled

There have been changes to the HTC hardware to disallow volume/record/camera keys to be used as game buttons, please stick to the keypad when redefining your own to avoid problems.

I would appreciate some feedback on your experiences with these emus, whether good or bad.

Please send enhancement requests to the original developers as I have no plans for doing any more updates to these programs.

Enjoy!

Kien Phan  (Parallax).

Hi Parallax - great work on sorting this out, it was driving me crazy since I got my SPV C550.
The problem I have is that when I try to run either picodrive or pocketnester I get this error message:
"Unable to open the file. The system returned the error 'access denied'!"

I have tried disabling security certificates on the handset just in case but nothing i do makes any difference. I did have the previous (non-qvga) version of picodrive (build 07.05.04) which will run, but obviously the qvga screen distorts the display.
I also have 'smartnes' and this also works with no problems. I was wondering if

A) you have encountered this problem before, and
cool.gif you have any idea how to get around it.

As far as I can tell you have tested them yourself successfully on an SPV C550 so I have NO idea why they won't work on my C550.
ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated as I am tearing my hair out as i Write this!

Thanks buddy, all the best.

SORTED!!!!!
Sussed it, complete user error on my part.

Nice work once again Parallax - you da man.
