I wouldn't have thought the 2 things were related so I might be pointing you in the wrong direction here.
Go to Settings, Homescreen and set Time-Out to never (or whatever suits you.)

Thank you. It all works except that the time doesnt show up in the top and the icons at the bottom don't do anything although I do think I have all the plugins required.

Presumably you installed the games to your storage card? If so check that the phone can still see the card or another bug that has been noted with WM5 is occasionally the phone forgets the card is there and creates a new Storage card while renaming the old card to Storage card 2.

Hmmm, sounds odd that it would do it at random. You can try a hard reset - that will most likely solve your problem. This is what you do;

1. Power off the phone and unplug it from the computer.
2. Press and hold soft1 and soft2 keys.
3. Press and hold power button for around 1 to 1.5 seconds. Release power button. Keep hold soft1 and soft2 keys.
4. Later, screen shoould show instructions to ask user to press '0' key to reset to factory default.
5. Press '0' within the timeout period, which is only several seconds only.
6. If no instruction is shown on the screen, repeat steps 1 to 4.
Timing is sensitive

I would suggest you look in the \Windows \Start Menu folder and manually delete it. 

Nope, needs a ROM rewrite to make it possible, I've read.
