Just upgraded my Dash from WM5 to WM6 using the TMobile image. Upgrade went as expected first try and like it I think? I had edited my registry as provided here in WM5 so all mail and attachments went to my storage card just fine. Using RegEditSTG in WM6 now trying to just do it again, I added two new values to the /HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/MAPI key as follows: AttachPath, set to a SZ value of \Storage Card\Mail\Attachments PropertyPath, set to a SZ value of \Storage Card\Mail And I created the corresponding folders on the storage card, and power cycled. It's being ignored, i.e. not working as it did in WM5. I noticed all my test mails with attachments are still showing up in \Windows\Messaging and \Windows\Messaging\Attachments. Anyone get this to work on WM6 and the Dash from TMobile? I would've thought they'd include this as a user option, but, anyway ... Thanks in advance. |

Is it possible the lack of this ability is generally acecpted? I'm coming off an MDA and knew there is no touch screen on the Dash but being able to select multiple emails in the Inbox to delete? ... really have to do one at a time? Also, can't selct text in an email, like a phone number to paste into a new contact? ... or a email address to save in an exixting contact? Are these capabilities not basically fundamental or am I missing something? Tried xBar 3.2 on my Dash; took my money for nothing ... xBar doesn't work .... goes through the motions but doesn't paste the text. Tried Vito Cut and Paste, also doesn't work. Klugy, Action is enter, never pastes, just doesn't do it. Please straighten me out here ... are you all actually writing things down from one screen and retyping it in another???? Can not be! I need a drink; let me buy you one too ... TIA. |

Let me buy you a drink ... I just switched to the Dash (HTC Excalibur/Windows Smartphone) from a T-Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard/Windows PPC). It's an exchange to replace my MDA for touchscreen alignment chronic issues. I have 7 days to eval the Dash. Okay with no touchscreen and no Office doc editing, BUT, I/it cannot simpy select text and copy/cut and paste in an email nor select multiple emails to delete. This is very basic functionality I think and driving me nuts. The rest of the device/OS is acceptable. I search for this topic and only found xBar as a suggestion (Scissors was poorly rated). I loaded xBar 3.2 and the software goes through all it's motions okay, but, the text doesn't get pasted. Nothing happens. Appears to select and copy but not cut and never pastes, just flashing cursor in the target location. Also, it cannot select mutlitple messages in an Inbox to delete. Anyone solved this using xBar or anything else? I apologize if this is a dead horse but I grepped a lot and couldn't find an answer. Many thanks! Terry |

I am playing with a nice WM5 PPC from Kinpo iDo model S601 for business. My own device is an HTC MDA from T-Mobile USA. The iDo has a nice little toolbar called the Smart Launch Bar (SLB) on the Today screen that has some useful buttons like Battery satus, Rotate Screen, Memory, ... I tried loading the SLB using it's CAB on my MDA, but at the end of the install there was a message that said the program did not load properly as it's for an earlier version of the OS. The SLB did load and run, but dogged the MDA after throwing an error something like Can't find the Kinpo Power_Event_ blah di blah something. Any suggestions on where I can get something like that for my MDA? Don't want to forklift the Today page, just have those few buttons added. Or maybe getting the SLB running on my MDA? I particularly like the screen rotate and memory buttons right there. Thanks! |

Seems like the MDA is too helpful with regards to its email clients and their servers. I don't want any coupling between my pop server and the MDA with respect to deleting emails in either one. Right now it seems when I download email on my DESKTOP PC, thereby removing the email from my pop server, the next time the MDA logs on to get email, its Inbox gets wiped clean. Why? Whose brilliant idea/assumption is this? What I want is: 1. as email comes in to my POP account, the MDA gets a copy. 2. my DESKTOP to control what and when any email is removed from the server 3. even though I may download email on my DESKTOP, thereby removing it from the server, the MDA's Inbox stays in tact. Then, I can work on email on the road or wherever from the MDA. 4. to delete email from the MDA as I see fit when I no longer need it on the device, regardless of whether I check email in the meantime on my DESKTOP PC. Right now the MDA *assumes* that since I downloaded the email off the server with my DESKTOP PC, that it should wipe clean its Inbox. The other nuissance is that if I delete and email from Deleted Items on my MDA, this removes the email from the pop server, so, if I hadn't downloaded mail on my DESKTOP PC in the meantime, I will never get a copy of that mail on my DESKTOP, it'll be gone. Two "solutions" suggested by HTC are: A. set up a GMail account (Google) which comes with pop access apparently, then set that account up on the MDA, then forward my pop mail to the GMail account. Then the MDA will get the forwards from the GMail pop. This mimicks how the Blackberry does it, except that Blackberry gives you the email address and here we have to substitute the GMail account to do so. I'm not sure how this will work, especially when replying to emails from the MDA ... who will it come from? What if I have 3 email accounts to manage (and I do)? Then 3 GMails??? B. Set my DESKTOP PC Outlook Account settings to "Leave messages on the server" and either delete after some number of days, and/or when deleted from Deleted Items. Neither of these seems spot on. I would be much simpler just to NOT have the MDA delete from the server, and NOT mirror the server's Inbox. Just get messages and leave them 'till I decide. Any suggestions? |

QUOTE(YoungHog @ Mar 30 2006, 18:14) Terryg Here is an update.. Finally moved over to a new laptop.. After installing ActiveSync 4.1 I can surf / browse do anything via the usb on a hot activesync.. However I now ahve not been able to obtain an IP address via wifi on the same network. Any ideas. pre-thanks YoungHog Be sure you have your 802.11b/g set right. Safe bet is set your router to Mixed wireless mode. By default the T-Mobile is .11b, unless you do the update as herein prior. Also, note redundantly, if USB is connected, WiFi won't do anything as USB will get the TCP/IP stack. I have had quirkiness with mine at first too ... had to reset once as WiFi wasn't locking in reliably. FYI, I am playing with very similar device from Kinpo iDo called a Neon 601 ... I had to baseline it as well once 'cause WiFi would lock in. |

QUOTE(YoungHog @ Mar 15 2006, 17:56) Hmmm.. Only difference here.. was 'Open ActiveSync when device connects' was selected. So i deselect that.. Plug in the VARIO.. and can not go to the internet or get email etc.. Granted i'm using pop.. no server.. I'm thinking in your Activesync setting on the MDA you might have a server listing.. Because it aint happening.. I unplug it.. (via usb) gprs back up.. can go to wireless g and everything works like a champ. what gives.. Nope, nothing under server source, don't have one. Under Menu -> Connections I have When Cadled Synchronize all PZCs using this connection: checked and set to 'USB. Under Settings -> Connections -> Tasks I have two: T-Mobile GPRS and My Work Network. Under Setup My Proxy Server, The GPRS has This Network Connects to the Internet checked; The My Work Network does NOT have this checked. Under Settings -> Connections -> Advanced -> Select Networks Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using: has T-Mobile GPRS selected in the pull down. Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using: Has My Work Network selected in the pull down. Ah, I just looked at Properties under My Network Places on the PC and there is a Local Area Connection 5, Connected, Windows Mobile-based Device #3 connection there. Under its properties Client for MS Networks, File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are there and all checked. Under TCP/IP properties, it's setup for DHCP. Under Client MS Networks -> Properties RPC Service shows Windows Locator under Name service provider. The Details shows the IP address is 169.254.2.2 SNM: 255.255.255.0 Assigned by DHCP Under Advanced -> Windows Firewall -> Settings is turned off, but on didn't stop it from working. There is also a Bluetooth Network Connection there but is Disconnected 'cause it's disconnected. This is all I can think of to give you, I hope there's lead for you here, especially the Network Connection, do you have one? If not you may want to reinstall ActiveSync or see if you can set one up manually. Good luck! Terry. |

QUOTE(YoungHog @ Mar 14 2006, 13:26) Great post.. A few things that I have noticed. Indeed when connected via wifi i.e. 802.11g and plugging up the active sync connection. the WIFI is overwritten.. However the connection is still active but no wifi items i.e. email / internet browse can occur. -- That means during either of USB or Bluetooth connections, browsing and email will "come over" either USB or Bluetooth, respectively, and through the PC's Internet connection. -- I have not been able to connect to the internet or send pop email etc. via the activesync connection.. I always get unable 'cannot connect.. the current connection cannot be used for your request...' So explain in more detail how you got this to work. If you did. If I remember I believe I have received gprs items while connected to active sync.. i.e. mms but also will confirm. On your listed area above which I quoted.. I still get 'cannot connect.. the current connection cannot be used for your request...' So advise how you did this.. please.. pre-thanks YoungHog YoungHog (Harley reference BTW?), I didn't do anything "special" to get the connection to share, which I am still curious about ... must be a Microsoft incestual interaction of some sort behind the curtain between XP Home SP2 and WM5. I looked and ICS is not enabled in the GUI, though it is clearly functioning as such. What I've done in the end is: 1. Installed ActiveSync 4.1 2. Checked ActiveSync -> File -> Communications Settings -> Allow USB connections 3. I also have Bluetooth set up and therefore a COM port for it is also enabled there, but this is incidental 4. This Computer is Connected to Automatic is selected in the pull down 5. And Open ActiveSync when my device connects is NOT checked I actually have both Bluetooth and WiFi "red x'd" with only Phone enabled, and absolutely without doubt I can browse and see a direct correlation between new pages loading in the browser and the the two-little-computer icon in SysTray on my XP PC lighting up. In this state, the MDA shows only a Right-and-Left-"segmented"-arrows icon on the top (this is the ActiveSync icon, as opposed to the WiFi mini tower with arrows or the GPRS little G with arrows). Do you get this? Also, can you browse the MDA's files through the Explore button in ActiveSync ... and therefore it says "Connected" and the ActiveSync's icon on your PC is Green? From this state, as soon as I unplug the USB, the G-arrows icon starts up, plug it in and the ActiveSync icon shows up again. Note: I only sync Contacts, Calendar, Notes, and Favorites ... I get email over POPs. Also Note: My PC's internet connection is on a wired LAN to a router serving DHCP and DSL. Maybe someone can tell me how to check the IP address on the MDA for the NOT WiFi connections? ... I just looked at my router and the MDA is not listed in the DHCP client table so it must be that XP<->WM5 thing getting the MDA and IP address or NAT'ing or something ... ??? Terry. |

QUOTE(c00kie @ Mar 14 2006, 12:10) Great info, thanks Terry. I've had my Vario for around a week now and am justing finding my way around with it. My first Windows mobile. Had a Motorola A1000 before and this looked like a good upgrade. I'm having problems connecting to my wireless router and get connected say 1 in 10 attempts, but still researching to see if I can find the problem. Cheers c00kie, I learned that, though T-Mobile is advertising 802.11g in some places, the firmware is only actually enabled for 802.11b. So you have two choices with regards to your router: 1. set the router to Wireless Mixed mode, so it will connect up 802.11b and g devices, and therefore allow your MDA running in 802.11b mode to connect. 2. Use the attachement (whic I downloaded from this forum) and it will turn on g mode in your radio. I did this and it works. Copy this to your MDA and click on it. Then reset. I hope it's okay to have attached this and please look for the original so as to give proper credit etc. BTW, I have noticed that in landscape mode (i.e. keyboard in use), signal strenght is diminished (due to the orientation of the antenna). Good luck. |

Okay, thanks and further, here is what I learned, and confirmed. Let me see if I can write it simply so to help others with the same question. First, ActiveSync does indeed use (what I would call) Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) ... i.e. when ActiveSync is connected with USB or Bluetooth, and Use USB and a Bluetooth COM port are checked in Connection Settings in ActiveSync, then the MDA will share the PC's Internet connection over either of them. The key is: the MDA is only capable of one Internet connection (in techeze, it has only one TCP/IP software stack). The stack gets passed around between the 4 possible Internet connections: USB, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPRS/EDGE. Whoever has the stack is "it". When USB is connected, USB gets the stack. Therefore, the Internet connection will be over USB using ICS on the PC through ActiveSync. When Bluetooth is connected, Bluetooth gets the stack. Therefore the Internet connection will be over Bluetooth using ICS on the PC through ActiveSync. That means during either of USB or Bluetooth connections, browsing and email will "come over" either USB or Bluetooth, respectively, and through the PC's Internet connection. That also means, WiFi and GPRS will be "over ridden" or "in the background". You can check this by turning off Bluetooth, WiFi, and Phone in Connection Manager on the MDA, plugging in USB, having USB enabled in ActiveSync under Connection Settings on the PC, and then browsing the Internet ... it will browse (check your little two monitors on the PC and your PC's Internet connection will be active while pages are loading on the MDA). This will work the same if you are not connected with USB, but with Bluetooth. When USB and Bluetooth are disconnected, if WiFi is enabled and "connected" to a WAN, then WiFi will get the stack. Therefore the Internet connection will be over WiFi through the WAN access point (AP). [Note: WiFi won't connect to a WAN AP while USB or Bluetooth are connected 'cause WiFi needs the stack to get an (IP) address from the WAN AP, and USB or Bluetooth has the stack.] When USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi are "not connected", then GPRS/EDGE will get the stack. Therefore the Internet connection will be over GPRS/EDGE through the T-Mobile Network. So, as an example in my case, I wanted to be able to plug my MDA into my PC to keep it charged at work, and still have it get email and phone calls. So, I now know I can turn on Phone, turn off WiFi and Bluetooth on the unit, then turn on USB (and the Bluetooth COM port if you want) in Connection Settings on the PC, and now the phone will charge, get calls, and also get email over the USB-ICS connection too. The seems almost trivial now that I understand it, but it was not clear at all to me at first, so I thought this would help someone else. In the end, I have to say, the MDA and WM5 is growing on me more and more. Best regards, Terry. |

QUOTE(Laser_iCE @ Mar 10 2006, 20:54) Hi there, from my experiences, BT and WLAN are still active when charging via USB ... Also, the main reason (that I can gather) that GPRS is NOT enabled when charging via USB is purely due to the fact that it uses your computer's internet connection, rather than charging you to use GPRS. So, that way, when you sync with your computer, it will download your MMS messages (if you have it set to do so, which it is by default by my Carrier), you can jump into IE, or even chat on MSN -- all using your home internet connection Hope this was of some help. Thanks. how, where, and when did I set up my PC's USB port to share its Internet connection? I have no recollection of that. Is this true of Bluetooth too? I have to check this out. I guess if I can still browse and check mail while connected USB or BT, with wifi and phone turned off in Comm Mngr., then that'll confirm it. Many thanks. |

Is there a clear explanation of the operational relationship between GPRS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB? Seems if I am plugged into USB to charge my MDA, though Active Sync has enable USB unchecked in Connection Settings ('cause I sync with BT), GPRS drops to GSM (I believe it's GSM when the little tower and arrows are gone and there's just a square with a G). Same thing happens if WiFi is up, as soon as I plug in USB the Wifi icon disappears in favor of the square with a G. I have to say I haven't dug into fully understanding the My Work, Internet, T-Mobile GPRS, .... settings yet; that's kinda' what I'm doing here. Why can't I have: 1. The unit charging over USB 2. GPRS active 3. WiFi active 4. Bluetooth active? ... or any combination thereof? Are there settings I can set on the MDA in to accomplish this? Why does plugging in USB stop the unit's ability to access the Internet to browse or email? Also, are my expectations too high to think that these connections should stay up, assuming your location doesn't change? Seems the connections break and I have to stop and start the radio, or WiFi, a lot to get them connected again (arrows not moving). Also, but not really also, what determines which network will get email? Browse? Can I set it up so that both use GPRS, unless WiFi is running, and if it is, use WiFi, and when it's turned off, revert to using GPRS? I am using DJVW Optimizer that turned on 802.11g on my T-Mobile MDA (and did other stuff too?). Thanks, er, I mean Thanks! Terry. |

QUOTE(chucky.egg @ Mar 9 2006, 17:22) In PPC Profiles Pro you can set the ringtones for each notification type, just as you can in the Sounds and Notifications section, but you can do it per Profile. Is it possible that you're just looking at the notification settings for one Profile? Try changing to the next profile (in PPCPP settings) and changing the notification settings. I think you'll find it can do it, but I dont have it installed at the moment to guide you through it. Also, remember that PPCPP settings override the built-in Sounds and Notifications settings. That caught me out - I couldn't understand why it wasn't using my chosen ringtone. Thanks for the lightning fast help! Kinda' working I think, but not as expected ... So I go to the P, setup a new Profile called Alarm. alert: Ring Ring Tone: Alarm4.wav System, Ringer, and In Call all in the middle Bluetooth: off Headset: blank Flight Mode: Turn Off Default Backlight Settings I go to Advanced -> Setup Notifications ... Profile: Alarm 1. Select Event: Reminders 2. Play Sound, Repeat checked Display Message checked Flash light checked Vibrate NOT checked Didn't get a sound from EMail, the phone only rings and sounds Alarm4.wav (though it's set for Jig.wav), but the alarm vibrates and sounds Alarm1.wav (not Alarm4.wav as expected, with no vibrate). I tried resetting the unit, different behavior. Then, I tried unsetting the alarm, then setting a different one, it repeated Alarm1.wav with no vibrate. Is there some non-deterministic behavior known about PPCPP? I'm much closer now that you've helped, just need to dig in a bit more probably. Many thanks! |

Newbie here. Just switched after 4 years of Blackberry (BB) to the T-Mobile MDA. Don't have a good reason, just did it. Guess I was looking for a bit more. Ok so far. Really, just ok. Not bad, but ok. Chalking it up to learning curve at this point. The BB did the email, phone, calendar, and contacts stuff very well and I had it down. As of now I can say the battery life is no where near the BB ... I NEVER even thought about my battery and had the same one for 3 years. Also, the BB radio is a bit better, more connecion more of the time, not much, but noticable. Lots of new good stuff on the MDA side, better browsing, WiFi, Bluetooth, camera, speakerphone, apps, etc., enough so my 14 days will expire and I'll keep it. One thing I really miss is the flexibility in profiles. The BB is able to set up a profile and offer individual control of each function's sound: email, SMS, Phone, alert, Alarm, etc. For me I need one at night that let's the phone ring, the alarm ring, but not email, messaging, or other PDA notifications. The stock controls don't allow it: just gross PDA or Phone volumes, and as I understand, the alarms are PDA functions just like email and text notifications. I've been running PPC Profiles and it doesn't do it either (happy to be wrong if someone can explain how). When I travel, especially across time zones, and I'm asleep, I don't care about emails or texts coming in. However, I do want my alarm clock to wake me up, and, I want to get a phone call from my wife if she needs me. Can anyone suggest something. I had one on the BB called SleepAwake that let the alarm and phone ring, received emails and texts, but didn't make a sound when they came in. I've glanced at PZP as well but still no function-by-function individual controls. Seems in both PPCP and PZP if the alarm can be heard, so can email and text notifications. Thanks in Advance. Terry. |
