Hi

Does anyone know if there is a replacement for the Niki - either already out or expected / announced?

I love the size and features of this phone. The 16 key keypad is perfect for my use, but built in GPS would be great and wifi nice.

I don't want or need a full querty keyboard - and actually prefer just the number pad.

Any thoughts anyone?

I would suggest either the Asus P750 or the HP iPaq 614c (I can vouch for the iPaq as being an excellent device plus mine is upgraded to WM 6.1). Neither of these devices have slide out keyboards (but do have hardware keyboards) but similar specs to the Touch Dual.

Thanks for the suggestions - but the keypad is one of the fundamental reasons I like the Touch Dual and would be a prerequisite of any replacement.

I'm ideally looking for another HTC 'phone - but would look at other makes.

Is there a direct replacement for the HTC Touch Dual?

Just wondering what the closest replacement for the Touch Dual / Niki is? Either already out or planned?

I love my Dual - great size, great features and I think the 16 key pad is perfect for how I use the phone.

I don't want the bulk or small button size of a Qwerty keyboard, but would like built in GPS.

So, is there an HTC Touch Dual replacement with:

Must Still Have Features:

16 key-pad.
Micro SD slot.
Similar size / weight

Must Have Extra Features:

Built in GPS

Ideal Extra Features:

WiFi
FM radio

I got my 3 year old son to say certain phrases using Voice notes, and recorded them to playback for certain events.

I've got:-

"Email Daddy"
"Text Message Daddy"
"Reminder Daddy"
"Voicemail Daddy"

and for my alarm: "Wake up Daddy"

Unique for my phone, and personal to me so not worth sharing the files, so I guess it's the actual idea I'm sharing

rolleyes.gif

I used to have one of my sons, who was about 1 at the time saying 'DaDaa, DaDaa' for my ring tone. He's now 4 and doesn't sound quite so cute!

I can't help much, but...

4) HSDPA is high speed 3G, so you probably do have to pay for using it (depends on your mobile tariff). Your current SIM may well be able to access it, if not your network will probably sell/give you a new SIM. PAYG data charges tend to be higher (in the UK at least), be careful as it's easy to run up LARGE bills for data use. It'll also drain your battery faster.

Thanks for the answers. Do you know if this is free with a T-Mobile Web n Walk contract?

I must be missing something! That's where I'm looking and every other phone except the Niki seems to have a photo... but not the Niki... or do I or my computer have selective blindness?

Why is this just about the only phone not to have a photo in the list of phone specific forums...?

Just wondering!

QUOTE(Rob44 @ Dec 22 2007, 15:12) *
Hi all,

Just been playing with my Orange (now mainly de-oranged) Touch Dual, have to say it's the most impressive phone I've ever bought.. hoever I've got a few questions if anyone knows how to tweak these settings :-

1) How can I increase the timeout for the keypad backlight? It seems to be set at 10 Seconds, I find it mega annoying if you're texting in the pitch dark (heehee) and the keypad totally disappears, be better if it was 1 min or so.

2) Have Microsoft done away with having scripts for things like SMS notifications, on my old SPV 550 I had it set something like av3pw60v1pw300v1pw900v1p so if I missed the text in my pocket I'd get "reminder" ones 1, 5 and 15 minutes later.. this seems to be missing in the registry now? I've tried re-creating the SMS key and putting the values in but they seem to get ignored.

3) Where's/Is it an XML file to control the home screen layout? The XP Theme is good but a little grey for my liking, ideally I want the LCD-Style clock in a retro bright Red, and possibly even have say the Email/SMS/Missed calls counters in yellow, is this customisable?

4) HSDPA, I take it this is a comms channel that goes through the provider i.e. I'd have to pay for traffic? Is this a 3G thing or will could I get it through my Pay-As-You-Scrub SIM I'm still using?

Any help or advice on any of the above appreciated!

Cheers,

Rob

I was hoping someone might have answered some of these!

Sorry, but I cant!

Any idea of the cost?

According to this, $149.00.

But, does this mean there would then be no memory card to use? If so - surely that's a major problem?

Also, how will it sit practically in the device - will it be sticking out of the side? Someone mentioned an antenna being really small - wondering where this antenna will actually be on the handset?

From this, there doesn't seem to be one! Can that be right?

They have them in stores but customer service will be a couple of days.

Anyone had one through CS yet? (Other than the batch released 'early' a week or so ago).

Definitely not the same price...

They wanted to charge me £120 (AFTER my upgrade allowance) for the Vario III but I'm getting the Touch Plus for free.

That sounds much more like it!

Now, what are my chances of getting them to bundle CoPilot I wonder...

OK, have spoken to business support who can't see it. Then phoned the number in this thread and they eventually looked for the Plus when I said that I had a friend that got the Plus and she found it, said it was released and said it was out of stock. The saga continues....

I was told some got 'into the system' and were released 'by mistake'... hmmm

i'm in oxford st t-mobile shop and they have touch plus advertised. for all flext under 35 squid it costs 69. for flext 35 and above it is free.

Interesting - speaking to the T-Mob business renewals team I was told that the price showing on their system for the (still not officially released) Touch Plus is the same as the price for a Vario 3 with CoPilot!!

However, the cost of a V3 on Flext 35 18 month, is currently showing on the T-Mob site as being £190... which is, ummmm... £190 more than the Touch Plus at Free.

So, what's going on? Are business renewals trying it on? Will the Touch Plus actually launch much cheaper than their system currently shows? Or, are they trying to make a quick killing on those who just can't / won't wait??

I upgraded to this on T-Mob on Saturday despite them not having any in and was told that they are still expecting them at any time - should be by the end of the month.

They'd better hurry up - I want my new phone wink.gif

How did you manage that!!??

I've been told that they let some out by mistake a week or so ago!! So, that suggests they're sitting in a warehouse somewhere in the UK.

What did surprise me was the 'price'. Apparently, it is currently showing on their system as having being the same 'effective price' as the Vario III with CoPilot!! Seems like a lot for a more basic phone (ie no GPS etc). Is that just 'cos it's new? If so, how long before the price drops? I can get one now FOC, but wanted to twist their arm for a copy of CoPilot too!!! ;-)

a) I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these to replace my aging SDA II - do you think it'll be a good choice? Mainly calling, contacts, calender and sat nav, but I'm sure I'll find other uses. I'm tempted by the Vario 3 with the built in GPS, but it's just too big!

cool.gif Does anyone have any more news on when it will hit T-Mobile head office for upgrades?

Thanks

Edit: b then ) produces cool.gif - but i'm sure you can work out my 'numbering'!

I'm not sure whether to sign up for Web 'n' Walk or not.

I don't currently have it, but it does appeal - obviously!

Would this go 2/3 of the way towards paying for it??!!

Thanks

Thanks for that!

It's good, but as you say, not perfect.

Also, a bit too complicated! All I want is to choose say, GPS, not to have to choose exactly which GPS and thereby exclude all other GPSs! Likewise keyboards. I want a keyboard, not fussed whether it is built in or slide or..., but I can only select 1 option.

Sadly, I suspect so!

I think I'd settle for the MDA Compact Slide or MDA Touch Dual, although the SDA Pro would also be interesting, coming from an SDA II!
