Hello, there is an easy way to get your PIE Favorites converted to Opera Mobile without the need of having Opera on your PC. Not everyone has Opera installed as Windows Browser on the PC, as Firefox is much more popular on the PC. So why just installing Opera for converting your PIE Favorites (Bookmarks) to Opera mobile ? There is an easier way of doing that: 1. Download the free Bookmark Converter from http://www.magnusbrading.com/bmc and install it on your PC. 2. Connect your Omnia to the PC via ActiveSync 3. Copy all your PIE Favorites (Bookmarks) - it's usually \Windows\Favorites incl. all the subdirectories - to a local directory of your PC 4. Start the Bookmark Converter on your PC and select as Bookmark Source "Internet Explorer favorites", then select the directory on your PC to which you copied your PIE Favorites; point to \Favorites 5. Select as target "Opera Bookmarks" 6. Click on "Browse", select your output path and chose "Opera 6/7" as file format. 7. Now click on "Convert", all your PIE Favorites (Bookmarks) will be converted to a file named Opera6.adr 8. Do not change the name of this file. You are not yet finished but almost. 9. Now open the file "Opera6.adr" with a file editor like UltraEdit 10. Search and replace all = characters by == (with the exception of the = in the second line: ... = utf8) 11. Save your changes 12. Now copy the file "Opera6.adr" to your Omnia into the directory where Opera expects its Favorites (Bookmarks); usually \Application Data Now you are complete ! Your Opera mobile should now give access to all your Favorites from the PIE, preserving also the hierarchies (subdirectories). |

Hello, on my old Qtek8300 I can write a new SMS and also select the number of an adressee, whom I do not have in my own phonebook, from my company's phonebook via Global Address Lookup (GAL). The Qtek8300 has Windows Mobile 5 (Smartphone Edition). However on Windows Mobile 6.1 devices the Global Address Lookup is only accessible when writing a new email, but not when writing a New SMS !!!! (Tested on a Samsung Omnia i900 with WM6.1 as well as on a TyTN II with WM6.0.) Has anyone else also experienced this ? Does anyone know a solution for it ? |

Missed to add this to my previous posting: Is there any chance to get the SP JAS (there is a "European keyboard version", the version I saw at Dubai Airport has an Arabic keyboard :-( somewhere in Europe ? Just to have it imported from i-mate Dubai wouldn't account as additional import taxes would apply. Is the Video Telephony option the SP JAS has compared to the MteoR working well ? |

Hello, I am a bit concerned by the following: There are various reports here and elsewhere that the HTC MteoR is losing settings every couple of boots. Is this a confirmed bug like the screen alignment bug of the HTC TyTN ? If so, are also the SPJAS and the Dopod affected from it ? Also it is noteable that the Breeze forums are quite empty compared to the forums of any other MS (HTC) smartphone or PocketPC Phone. What does this mean ? Does this phone not sell too well ? If so: Which is the reason ? (There is ALWAYS a reason why a product does not sell well !) Compared to a Qtek 8300 (which I currently own for more than a year now), how could the MteoR be qualified in terms of: Battery lifetime, audio quality, quality of the display, lack of serious bugs - all features you rely on if you use a device in your daily life (and do not buy it just for experimenting or having a hip device) ! It is strange to say: But currently I would not see any MS Smartphone (I am NOT talking about a PDA phone, whose form factor is larger and whose operation mode is different: no dedicated one-hand operation etc.) around which would fully convince me as the follow-up model of my Qtek 8300 ! (Well the Mteor has UMTS in addition, which would be a good argument to migrate; but definitely not at the "expense" of serious other bugs.) How come that the Qtek 8300 (after the AKU2 upgrade) is an absolutely reliable phone (call it work horse), offers good audio quality, acceptable battery lifetime, good overall performance and compatibility - and there is no clear follow-up model I can see ??? |

Hi, SplashBlog seems to be one of the very few (if not the only ?) software for Photo Blogging on the Smartphone platform. Unfortunately on my smartphone (Qtek 8300, same as imate SP5m) it does not work at all :-( That's what I did: Registering for a free account on their website. Downloading and installing the software on the smartphone (tried out both: memory and card). Trying to set up the program and establishing a connection. Immediately after trying that I get the following error: "SplashBlog was unable to establish a connection (0x0)." Has anyone out there encountered the same or a similar problem ? Or in other words: Has anyone with the same or a similar smartphone (recent WM5 AKU2) managed to get a working connection ? +++ My phone type: Qtek 8300 (same as imate SP5m and various other) OS: Windows Mobile 5 with AKU2 update (incl. DirectPush) I am using the German localized version of WM5 (but I do not think this causes the problem). The problem occurs disregard if the software is installe in memory or storage card. The network connection otherwise is properly configured and works. Hoping for feedback ! |

Hello, as I recently saw an offer on Ebay (without any mention of the brand), while Sandisk's homepage does not even mention a word (and also very little mention trying Google) I wrote a mail to Sandisk asking them about the expected availabiliy of this item. That's what I received as a reply: Hello, Thank you for contacting SanDisk Technical Support. [...] The MicroSD 2GB is a newer product and you will find it hard to source one, but it is currectly out in the market. Should you need to speak to a live representative please contact SanDisk Technical Support at one of the listed contact numbers. Best Regards, Moira N. SanDisk Technical Support USA +1 (866) 726 3475 So this is the confirmation that this article is already available though a bit hard to get hold of. I asked one of my local dealers, who is specialized on Storage Cards and he already accepts pre-orders with an expected availability "in 3 weeks". Price is approximately "double as the current price for a 1GB MicroSD". Please note: I am not speaking of MiniSD, but MicroSD, the storage cards e.g. needed for a HTC TyTN or HTC Meteor. They are as small as the nail of my small finger and look extremely fragile. BTW: Item Code of this product is SDSDQ-2048-E10M (for the Sandisk product) in case anyone tries to ask his local dealer for it. |

On HTC’s Windows Mobile 2005 devices updated with the AKU2 firmware it was possible to invoke the Engineering Test Mode (Engineering Mode) by doing the following: 1. Adding the following keys to HKLM\Software\HTC\EngineerMode: "BuildInEngineeringModeApp"=dword:00000000 "LaunchEngineerModeAppDialStr"="*#*#364#*#*" 2. Saving file GSMTestMode.exe to /Windows and starting it after having rebooted the device +++ The HTC Engineer Mode presents a lot of operating parameters of technical values (not so detailed but similar as in Nokia’s Monitormode menus). That’s how these screens look like http://forum.xda-developers.com/files/gsm_686.jpg However on the HTC TyTN the Engineering Mode no longer works. If invoked the screen looks like that (see attached image): ![]() Could anybody try to find out the reason why it does no longer work and try on a workaround ? Maybe there is information leaked from HTC or maybe there is even a new Engineering Mode application available ? Who could succeed in doing that ? |

And as an advice for people with a German OS: Rename QuickMark.0409.dll to QuickMark.0407.dll to get the English menu ! QuickMark is one of the collest applications for mobile phones I have seen for a long time. I wonder how long it takes until Europe4an mobile operators will discover that money can be earned with this application as it both applies to the "Fun Factor" as well as "Usability Factor". |

Hi, does anyone know whether this is a real or fake offer: http://cgi.ebay.com/2GB-SanDisk-microSD-Tr...0QQcmdZViewItem They don't offer a noname product but even mark it "Sandisk" (I can remember that the first *Mini*SD - not MicroSD - on the market was a no-name product, Sandisk only followed a while later). USD 99 wouldn't be too much for this high-end flash memory, but for a fake it definitely would be too much. (Of course also the additional costs for shipping and import tax would have to be taken into account, but maybe a dealer could be found to import it and retail it to us - provided this product really exists already.) Any feedback on that ? @Paul: What about importing some 50 pcs. and offering it on your webshop ? (You do run a webshop, don't you ?) I'd be the first to buy one and I could imagine it won't take too long until you were sold out. |

So Dopod added the videocam ---> nice move Maybe i-mate is adding WLAN ??? ---> would be great ! Actually the lack of WLAN is the only criterion why I do NOT intend to buy myself this model. It is expensive enough and therefore I do NOT tolerate this lack of WLAN (which was included in the predecessor and worked there perfect) By the way: Does anyone happen to know if the layout contains a WLAN chip ? (Probably not) Does anyone happen to know if there the layout at least was designed with the wiring for WLAN but simply the chip (and the software utilities) was not added ? (In lutzh's review you can see that the Connection Manager does not offer WLAN as an option.) |

Hello, is there something like a way to compile a series of some very basic commands and add it to what used to be a *.bat file in the DOS world ? Is this possible on the Smartphone OS with little effort and other than using huge development tools on the PC ? E.g. defining two or three lines for copying 2 or three files from folder a to folder b upon invoking a batch file ? |

Hello, On a Qtek 8300 (and probably also imate SP5) you can schedule an appointment, but not invite any contact ! This virtually renders this function almost useless ! What is the reason why this function is crippled on the Smartphone, whereas it is fully implemented e.g. on a Qtek 9000 or 9100 ??? Even the 2.x upgrade has this deficiency :-(( |

The only real difference from your point of view is that MS push email takes 6 to 12mb of data a month just to work, even if you have no mail. Any mail is on top of that amount. Blackberry on the other hand will only use data when you have mail - so if you had no mail that month it uses no data. I have had only two working days (meaning I really made a stress test) practical experience with DirectPush. Your hint on the frequency of its heartbeats and the data overhead is a very interesting input !!! I will have a closer look on this. Thanks ! I think DirectPush is by no means already "perfect". Rumors can be heard already about an AKU3 under preparation by Microsoft. I hope they already work on it and believe they do, because the first stories about the AKU2 I heard reached back to last spring, but the final release version wasn't available until only recently. So in the MS Labs there should also be at least an early experimental version of an improved DirectPush. Provided you get a good data (flat) rate from your operator DirectPush is however predestined to be something like a "killer application" (I know a frequently (ab)used term in the IT Business). Why ? Most of the reason why has already been said by you and I need not repeat it. Having mobile and CONVENIENT access to one's mails is one of the most important and useful purposes of "mobile data" and people are prepared to pay for it. The "big hypes" however happen elsewhere, e.g. DVB-H. Contrary to the success and demand for mobile mail applications I rather doubt in the success of all those hype apps - although they are all s cute ;-) |

I took time last night and upgraded my Qtek 8300 to the next major firmware version 2.x ! If you do so pls do NOT forget to save the following items before commencing the upgrade: * Phone Contacts (best use the Jeyo Mobile Companion) * SMS (use Jeyo) * Internet Bookmarks (simply copy them to your Storage Card and afterwards back to the phone) * various files you haven't yet saved to your Storage Card Primarily I decided to upgrade because of the "DirectPush Mail" functionality introduced with the AKU2 service pack. A lot of controversal information has been given by both web portals as well as individuals posting to forums. Some of these even argued that Push is not Push but rather something like a synchronization and not comparable to Blackberry. I was very keen therefore to find out on my own. A colleague of mine however has successfully upgraded his Qtek 9100 a few weeks before and he has been very satisfied with the MS DirectPush Mail since. And this was finally what motivated me in doing likewise for my device. So this is what I can report to you from one day of intensive work with the new firmware and its features: The upgrade procedure itself went very smoothly and faster than the previous upgrade (from a pre-release firmware to the first final last fall). The "up to 10 minutes" it would last according to the info screen were not at all even reached. After the upgrade the phone showed the following version: ROM version: 2.0.8.0 (previously: 1.0.7.0) Windows: BS 5.1.195 (previously: BS 5.1.70) RIL version: 2.002 (remaining the same as before) Radio version: 413.1.03_02.07.00 (previously: 4.0.13.17_01.04.00; maybe an error with the point ?) The programs in the ROM (File Explorer, WMP etc.) only showed a higher build number, all version numbers are pretty the same, so I do not include that here. Now for the more "substantial" changes ! I immediately asked myself: Will the DirectPush Mail work with my company server ? What other noteable features will there be (unfortunately no Release Notes are provided with the firware pack) ? This is what I found checking all features for one day: 1. new: AKU2 WM5 DirectPush Mail 2. new: Comm Manager optically reworked and containing more and better feaures 3. new: Internet Explorer can now display pages with frames !!! 4. improved: increase in speed when "problematic" pages are displayed in IE 5. new: utility "USBswitch" showing up in Accessories (Selection between Serial and RNDIS for ActiveSync) 6. new: new arrangement of items on Today Screen (Operator, Time in bigger font) 7. new: WLAN Status displayed in Today Screen under operator name 8. improved: Bluetooth now heavily improved in function and speed of invocation (devices now connect reliably and fast; BT integrated into new Comm Manager) 9. fixed: transfer of files via Bluetooth now really works :-) hurray ! 10. partly fixed: invoking CellBroadcast now shows CB infos os cells; however it seems that they are not updated (previously CB infos were not shown at all even if invoked) Remarks: ad 1) WM5 DirectPush Mail is really cool !!!!! I received the details on how to use it with our corporate server by our sysadmin. Thes edetails are "company-specific", so I cannot post them here. As I'd assume that only a few people run a (legal) MS Exchange Server at home better ask your company's sysadmin for the credentials and advice on how to use DirectPush. Either it is available and allowed to be used by employees and he will tell or it is not and you must not use it. Fortunately it is available in the company I am working. From what I experienced today mails are coming in almost instantly (in case you select immediate transfer in ActiveSync). I am not familiar with the deep technical details of Blackberry and MS DirectPush. In case they are not functionally identical "under the boot" this is then only an academical controversy, something like the choice between yes and YES (thus virtually the same). Actually I am convinced now of the practical use of MS DirectPush and I'm glad I can do without a Blackberry :-) ad 2) The new Comm Manager has been both optically and functionally reworked and is now very convenient to use. It contains now 7 functions (including BT and a switch for turning DirectPush on and off). I can upload a screenshot if requested, but I think someone has already done so. ad 3) This is an unexpected improvement. Pages with frames are now no longer rejected and remain blank. They are displayed now. However I did not yet discover how to switch between the frames. Any ideas ? ad 4) There are certain webpages, which performed very slow when scrolling up and down. An example for such a page is the price checker www.geizhals.at. If you select there a type of product, e.g. harddisks 2.5" and try to scroll down the page you had to wait a long time. The page simply scrolled step by step in very low speed. Now it is possible to scroll in turbo speed. ad 5) more or less self-explaining ad 6) The operator's name as well as the time are now shown in a larger font on the Today Screen. ad 7) more or less self-explaining ad 8) more or less self-explaining; for the first time now I'd say that the buggy BT on MS Smartphone devices is fixed ! ad 9) Try to transfer a file now from the File Explorer of the Smartphone to your big Windows XP. It works ! ad 10) Previously a CB message transmitted by a base station was not displayed at all on the screen. Now it is, but if you leave the coverage area of this cell it still shows up. Seems that the displaying of a CB message is not updated. As I do not use this function I see it as a neglectable bug. Conclusion: This upgrade contains a lot of really substantial improvements beyond the brush up of the user software of previous firmware releases. In a working Exchange Server environment the WM5 DirectPush Mail works like a charm. What I did not see is the display of "E" in case the connection is done via EDGE. Can this be changed somewhere in the registry ? In case someone out there experiences any further substantial improvements with this firmware release pls report them here. BTW: Does anyone happen to know why the HTC Universal apparently is the only HTC device whose AKU2 firmware bears a 1.x version number ? |

Hello, if you have pictures of many of your contacts and the only way of allocating them to your contacts is to individually assign it to each contact via going thru the menus you might grow old (or your fingers get crooked)... Isn't there any smart way of doing this via a utility on the PC ? Where is this information stored on the phone and in which format are the allocations encoded ? If this be known it should be an easy task for a programmer of PocketPC SW to create a little utility allowing: * to allocate photos to contacts * applying the changes to the appropriate database * copy the database onto the phone again Isn't this a rather "common" question ? No smart solution around ? |

I surely believe you. But this cradle looks (and well also is) very bulky :-( If you previously had an E200 (I owned the generic Qtek 8080) you surely knew the cradle which came with it in the package. This little and well-designed thing was simply great built very solidly and had a good hold due to a solid metal plate on the bottom. As I migrated to a Qtek 8300 (generic version of the C600) the plug no longer fit in. Having two of these cradles - none of which I am using any longer - I decided to open up one some time ago to have a look on how to adapt it for the Qtek 8300. There is a small printed board inside the cradle to which the proprietary plug is soldered in addition to a few other circuits. (Remark: These additional circuitry definitely only is there to buffer the voltage from the external charging connector; so you do not necessarily need all this circuitry just for synchronizing and charging via USB.) Most interestingly the cable is connected to this board via a - believe it - Mini-USB plug !!!!! What I tried out then: De-soldered the proprietary plug from the board and brutally destroyed some other circuits on the board using a screw driver in order to gain space. Fit the phone outside the slit and marked the position of the Mini-USB receptacle on to the slit using a permanent marker. Copied the marks onto the little board inside the cradle and carefully soldered the Mini-USB plug formerly connected to the board onto the board pointing thru the slit and fitting into the receptacle as good as possible. The work was done well, however the cradle not yet totally fulfilled its purpose. I cannot remember it any more, has been too long now, but I was either able to charge the phone or to synchronize it, don't recall which it was. I was unable to find out the reason why because I didn't find the correct pin out of a USB-to-MiniUSB cable for Smartphone so far. Maybe the best would simply be to get a USB2MiniUSB cable, which is long enough, destroy the casing of the MiniUSB plug and solder it to the tiny board as I did with the other plug. Both bare MiniUSB plugs as well as receptacles are very hard to get, just found a distributor in the USA (high transportation fees to EU). Haven't had enough time since to try that out, but getting a nice-looking and very practical cradle would be worth while it. Strange that no vendor itself found out that these cradles can be "recycled" and traded again with a new purpose. Having professional equipment as well as the needed plugs one had to be less "brutal" than I was ;-) Cheers ! 2. I am still waiting for a pair of MiniUSB and receptacle to build myself a small test board allowing me to check the pin-out of one of my working USB cables for this phone QUOTE(svermilyea @ Jan 8 2006, 15:02) |

QUOTE(timmillwood @ Dec 20 2005, 01:36) Yes and no ! Actually it comes with one, correct. But this "case" is more like a cover (you can *try* and use it portrait-wise) and you really win a prize if you manage to squeeze your device in !!!! And once you have managed this you'll get a prize for pulling it out again (and then for not breaking it). Really this useless case-thing is scandalous. Much too tight to use it. My device, as said, is a Qtek 9000, technically identical with the JASJAR. Maybe the JASJAR comes with a usable case, don't know. Anyway the cardboard package in which the Qtek was shipped is very stylish, also the Qtek itself (I love it). But the "case" is awful. |

Hello, is there any leather case /w holster like that one available; http://www.expansys.at/product.asp?code=125516 ? This is a "real" case not a protective case like a number of others already available, meaning that you can simply take out your Universal and do not have to work fitted as part of the case. Only disadvantage is: it is not yet available and Expansys seems to offer it exclusively. (Not that I mistrust them in principle, but they always postpone already communicated release dates and also frequently change announced prices.) Does anyone know who is the manufacturer of this case ? They say "Premiere Systems", but I cannot find anything about such a company on the internet. Thanks. |

In terms of IE Bookmark Management WM5 for Smartphone is definitely superior to WM5 for PPC !!! With the prior I can edit IE Bookmarks, whereas this is NOT AT ALL possible with the latter. HOW ONLY COME ??? +++ I did not find this topic ever discussed in here, if I am wrong could anyone pls post a link to this thread ? Definitely the ability to surf in the internet while being away from home makes a Smartphone so cute (I can make voice calls also with my very old mobile phones I still have in the drawer). I was simply confused to find the unavailability of IE Bookmark Management on my brand new Qtek 9000 (which I received last week), while I had been positively surprised by the Bookmark Management of the Qtek 8300 Smartphone back in August. Editing IE Bookmarks on the Qtek 9000 (and surely on any WM5 Pocket PC) is quite difficult, whereas it is extremely easy on its Smartphone "counterpart". Does Microsoft think it is not necessary to edit IE Bookmarks on a Pocket PC ? Or was that "feature" (intentionally ?) left over from previous Pocket PC OS ? What do others think of that ? |

No, gone. Overall I was extremely surprised at the excellent sound quality of my Qtek 8300. After all you would expect good to excellent sound quality from a device which you anyway use as a phone - and only second place as Internet device. (This may be different for some of you, but I am using my Smartphone as my business phone.) In parallel to the Smartphones I always also had a contemporary Nokia phone. They are after all renowned for reliable phone operation and very good to excellent sound (simply because Nokia always used good quality speakers). My present Nokia is the 6680. It sound quality is really excellent - and I am a really demanding user, believe me I can tell you that the sound quality of the Qtek 8300 is at least as good as that of the 6680, if not surpassing it. This is surprising and joyful at the same time ! The initial sound quality of my Qtek 8080 (first release firmware) was mediocre to bad. Tried the first firware update as soon as it was out, just to find out that then the soundquality worsened to "poor". I was desperate. Experimenting a few weeks later with the newly issued i-mate firware it became almost good, but anyway ok for everyday use. So definitely HTC learned a good lesson ! No doubt the internet capabilities of the MS Smartphones (even of the old Qtek 8080) surpass those of the Nokia phone. However this cannot account for bad to awful sound quality ! A phone is a phone anyway, whatever nice additional feature it might have. QUOTE(xrwz1 @ Oct 17 2005, 16:06) Is Tornado plagued by the same soundbug as the Typhoon variants? link to soundbug thread here I want to get one and while wi-fi is a big selling point to me the soundbug would be a big deterrent. Can anyone who has a Tornado please shed some light in this matter? |

Hi Roma, I can tell you the following: I have Windows 2000 at work and I also installed AS 4.1 for the new Qtek 8300. It works perfect and also the installation went without a problem, actually I had more problems lately with AS 3.8 using my old Qtek 8080 (every now and then I did not get a device connection until the PC was booted up once or even twice). Of course there is a Virus Scanner installed on all the office PCs and I couldn't turn it off for the installation (and actually I wouldn't be allowed to do this). Also there are running a lot of service utilities in the background which can't be de-installed (and it is also forbidden to de-install them). So there are a lot of background tasks on office PCs causing potential problems in an installation. Anyway I am surprised to hear that you couldn't install AS 4.1 on your private PC at home. Perhaps you try to de-install (or turn off) your Virus Scanner and especially any software firewall. Also try to plug off "notorious" USB devices such as webcams (had some strange and terrible Bluescreens with very fatal-looking error messages not even allowing me to boot into Protected Mode, just to find that a Logitec USB webcam had caused all that and Bluescreen was gone after unplugging it.) Another advice: Upon trying to synchronize with our company Exchange server AS 4.1 seemed to be searching for the server forever without any success. No idea why but apparently this did not work at all. A perfectly working solution for me was synchronizing to my Outlook installed on the PC ! As the local Outlook installation quasi carries an "image" of your Inbox as well as your Contacts and the Personal Folder - which are physically stored on the Exchange Server in company installation, you get the same effect when synchronizing "just" with your PC. Try doing that ! Usually you will find some "strange" proxy entries in the connection section of your Smartphone after a successful installation (btw: this was the same on my old Qtek 8080). Just don't care about that as it installs automatically. Just give it an other try ! QUOTE(roma0803 @ Oct 19 2005, 08:50) Now I want to synchronize with my XP-Pro laptop at work... No Go. ActiveSync hangs in the "Connecting" window and no wizard to create a partnership (that would be the second on my phone) pops up. Upgraded my laptop illegally to SP2 but it did not solve anything. Using AS4.1 build 4807. No firewall enabled on my laptop. Both online and offline are giving the same result. Did a hard reset of the phone, uninstalled AS fully, including the left rapi.dll in the systemfolder and reinstalled AS, no changes. A new networkconnection is created when connecting the phone by USB and an 169.xxx address is applied, like my desktop at home. Still no AS partnership can be created or a sync can be done.... Suggestions anyone? I really would like to sync my Outlook calendar with my phone |
