I know this topic in ancient, but as it's *vaguely* related to my problem I thought I'd use it !

I can manage to download and/or stream some videos from the bbc site to my vario 2 via thei links ok, but when I play them, the video is never full screen (despite the always full screen option being selected) and the video usually stutters (audio ok).

I don't have this problem with non-bbc clips I have, and have seen the bbc clips run under media10 on an ipac fine.

Is this just me, or is it a vario limitation ?

thanks

It can't be as slow as my T-mobile 3G currently - it's way slower than GSM at the moment, and usually fails completely !!

QUOTE(dskeeles @ Jan 9 2007, 15:06) *
I was going to post an update.... I gave up on mine. In the end, I think it was the fiddliness of getting to the bottom D-pad key and bottom corner keyboard keys, along with it being slightly harder to pull out of my pocket due to the friction of the case. I never did get used to the shielded hardware keys either - I'd end up pressing the Voice Dial button instead of the Connection button.

I've now opted for a simple wrist strap, and no case: when in my pocket, it's easy to grab, and I can put it over my wrist (or usually a couple of fingers) if I'm wary of dropping it, such as when walking. As for protecting against wear and tear, I have a screen protector, and keep it in a pocket devoid of keys or coins, and it seems to be holding up pretty well.

If you're dropping your Vario, I don't think the silicone would help that much - I think it would pop out of the case too easily, or land screen-first (no protection here). You're better off with a full case... or something more rugged, like an E61 wink.gif
[d]

Thanks for this. It's the corners that have taken a beating on mine rather than the screen - shirt pocket, and bent over ... bounce ! That and sliding out of my fleece pocket when walking down the road.

To it's crdit though, other than some dented plastic it's stll going strong, and I haven't even had to reallign the screen recently (tempting fate I know !)

I'm just about to buy one of these having bounced my Vario off the tarmac 3 times in as many weeks mad.gif

Is everyone who has one still happy with it, or found anything else that is nice and thin ?

Thanks

Does anyone know if it's possible to get the bbc's "radio player" to run under PIE ?

A lot of their achived material doesn't give you the "play in real player" option. I'm guessing it's a problem with running javascript, although I thought the version of PIE with WM5 supported this now ?

Having used the keyboard quite a lot now on my Vario II i'm getting quite good !

However, typos occur from time to time, and these always then get automatically added in to the dictionary, so I'm finding that I get typos suggested instead of the correct words !!

Does anyone know how to edit the dictionary list ? I had a quick search, but couldn't see an ASCII file or anything friendly.

I keep getting a problem where my Vario II can't make a data connection (or 2G or 3G).

As soon as it tries, it almost instantly fails with a message about "the answering modem has disconnected" (this is on t-mobile). It get this about once a day.

Switching into and out-of flight mode cures it, but it's rather annoying !!

It only started when I installed GB-SOFT GPRS & Audio Tweak and set the disconnect time to 3mins. I've since removed it, but I think it has left the disconnect time still at 3 mins.

Has anyone else had this, and does anyone know what the "default" connection settings are, so I an try and put them back. I have a feeling that it wasn't just "leave connected all the time".

I've had lots of problems using bluetooth to sync.

My PC shows my phone as "connected" on control panel, but active sync just sits there.

I have to try and force a bluetooth sync (using the option on the phone) about 10 times before it'll actually do it, although it does usually notice eventually, so my settings cant' be that wrong !

Usually I just end up using USB.

I had that, but it's not persisted following a reset. I think it may be something to do with one of the SBP Today screen apps I had installed at the time.

Mine still does this all the time unless one of the messaging apps is runnning.

I'm not running the SBP Today apps. I wonder if it's the T-mobile today plugin that causes it ?

I noticed that my free program memory was getting a bit low on my Vario II today, so I finally had a nose for the PIE clear cache button.

I couldn't believe it ! When I cleared the cache, it freed up 15Mbytes of space !!

Does anyone know if there is a limit on how big this can get, and if PIE has any management at all to stop this from filling up the device completely ?

I've found that either my VArio II or T-mobile still isn't too good at switching between 2G and 3G.

When i'm in strong 3G coverage I have no problems, but if I have weaker (2bars shown) coverage I find that I can often miss calls and net access varies between great and awful. I think quite a lot of this is when it tries to switch to 2G having struggled on 3G for a couple of seconds.

If I set it to 2G, then I've seen no problems.

I was talking to the bloke in a t-mobile shop at the weekend, and he says that the "unlimited" data tarriffs on t-mobile are to change on the 1st October.

Evidently there will be something like 3 different charges from £8.50 - no downloads, skype etc, just surfing & a 1GB limit - through to £22 for a massive limit and offically sanctioned use of skype, msn etc etc etc.

So if you want the £7.50 2GB deal currently offered it would appear you need to hurry.

Of course he could be wrong etc etc

Anyone else heard this ?

I have been having problems connecting to my ISPs smtp server for sending email on t-mobile.

smtp.t-email.co.uk works fine, but obviously not when using wifi.

After some investigation I have discovered that the reason for the problem is the t-mobile proxy IP address has been blacklisted on a couple of spam checker sites (like spamcop.net) !! Therefore my ISP is rejecting my sends !!!

It looks like t-mobile has 3 sendmail servers, although only 1 has this problem. Interestingly it's also the only one with no reverse-dns lookup.

Anyway, I have reported all this to t-mobile, and they have escalated it in order to try and work out what is going on !

Yup, I got that. Properly broken - I just couldn't make the messaging app window content come back. Ugly bug.
You using authentication for the other SMTP servers? Most SMTP servers operated by ISPs and the like only accept connections from devices on the same network, to prevent spammers abusing them. This means that the only general-access SMTP server you'll be able to connect to from T-Mobile's network will be T-Mobile's SMTP server. The alternative, should T-Mobile's SMTP be in some way deficient, is to get yourself a proper paid-for hosting account with some hosting provider, who should be able to get you SMTP services that require authentication and are therefore unrestricted

Anyway, I've got a bug of my own to add...

I've got three different POP3 email accounts, and I set it to check them every 15 minutes. Often I view the inbox but don't open the mail, because I can see from the senders and titles that they're spam or something I'll deal with later. But 15 minutes later, when it checks the mail again, even if there is no new mail it still gives another notification alert that persists until I dismiss it or view the inbox. Sometimes it sorts itself out, and stops giving bogus notifications on each mail check. Sometimes it doesn't, and receiving just one mail in the day causes the thing to keep on beeping a notification at me every 15 minutes. FWIW, I put the device into standby when I'm not using it.

Anyone else get this? Is it a bug, or me Just Not Getting It. It happens just the same on all three accounts, two of which are with a good hosting provider and one is a corporate account via VPN.

cheers.
mtg

The external smtp servers I have tried are both with and without authentication. I know others using googlemails server with no problems, and I could always use my website one on Orange fine too.

Yes, I get the alert bug - quite annoying.

The other bug I am seeing which is really causing me problems is a startup bug. It seems that about 30%-50% of times I reboot the phone, programs such as PPCProfilePro and TenGo don't start, and cannot be started other than by rebooting again. Other than being *very* annoying, it appears that if profilePro doesn't start, then when it does, it doesn't take over properly and gets the ring tone etc etc wrong until I manually select a profile again.
This is really quite poor. My Vario is not in my good books because of this at the moment.

That ringtone program will use a search path to find the ringtones (including whatever the rings directory is in the registry). Its possible that your operating system is including directories in the search path that ppcprofiles does not.

To keep things simple you might like to make sure your rings directory is correct and add all your ringtones to that directory.

Am looking at buying a 1Gb microSD card for my Vario II, and have noticed that SanDisk now have an UltraII version of their card.

Does anyone have any experience of whether it's worth the extra money for this over the standard one ?

I'm guessing it might speed up application load time, and help with mp3 playing, but only if the device can keep up. (Kinda hoping the VarioII with it's faster processor can start to take advantage of these things)

My list of bugs after 5 days with the VArio II version :

The odd sticky key, that seems to be improving.

Pressing the messaging button when the messaging application isn't already running changes the menu and banner, but not the main part of the screen ! I have to load the messaging app first.

TenGo free doesn't is sometimes unselectable. I have to reboot to make it work (Tengo bug I assume)

Can't connect reliably to any smtp server other than the t-mobile one (why is it that some people have this problem, and others not ??)

Had a problem with the phone lock, such that i could click on unlock, but then had to open the keyboard and press * as pressing unlock on the screen did nothing !

QUOTE(Prosody @ Aug 29 2006, 22:56) *
Just wanted to post about a problem my dad has been having with HSDPA on his Vario 2.
Changing DNS made the "Finding Page" alot quicker however the connection is still VERY unreliable and sometimes pages don't load at all.

One thing I noticed is that the HSDPA signal is constantly at around 2 bars and if left connected for a while you could pick it up and it'd go really quick, the speedtests say 1.1Mbps and it all looks good for about 10 minutes until it goes slow again.

Anyway what seemed to also be happening is that the phone could not make up its mind wether to use GPRS or HSDPA so I'm guessing the signal isn't great (I'm in Derby) or the ROM version isn't handling things very well.

For now we've found a setting in the network options to force the Vario 2 to always use GPRS and it's fast and responsive and reliable thus far. The HSPDA speeds would have been nice, for what my dad uses it for tho it's more than enough, I'm just hoping the HSDPA is sorted out by Feb when it comes time for me to upgrade from my MiniS.

So to summarise if you're having problems with the internet on your Vario 2 (T-Mobile) it may be worth cutting back to GPRS for the sheer reliability of it always being there when you need a page... if you have awesome HSDPA signal then I hate you... tongue.gif

What DNS changes did you make ?

I have a problem that when I change the smtp server in an account, the first time i connect, it takes a full 1 or 2 minutes, saying "connecting ..." before doing anything, i'm guessing it might be a DNS issue. Of course, if I could get it to connect to anything other than the t-mobile smtp server then i wouldn't have to change it when i use wifi !
