Larry Bank another problem is 150% does not work on any other orention except 0. 90, 260 does not work. it close smartgear out all way.

So Larry, do you have a Kaiser/Tilt for testing?

I am very curious how hard it would be for you to make QTV overlay output, an option for smartgear. I believe it does all image stretching in hardware and would be quite a nice addition.

There are many Qualcomm 72XX Windows Mobile phones on the way and it's likely this QTV overlay will be available on a lot of devices.

I recently read somewhere that HTC devices make up some 80% of all Windows Mobile devices produced now.

What device(s) do you have?

SmartGear expects game files to be inside of ZIP files. It doesn't really make sense to keep games uncompressed since they would take 2-4X as much disk space.

L.B.

So I'm a little confused. So is SNES emulation working on Windows Mobile? Because i tried to open a zip with an SMC file inside and it says "Unrecognized File". It does however work on the desktop version.

bitbank its very strange that at once point (perhaps the earlier versions like anything below .20) there was no sound clicking, but now it's a problem your not sure of. have you re-writen any sound code since your earlier versions?

Maybe it was always there (on the Tilt) but you failed to notice it until I started complaining lol.

I don't remember what version I started with, but it has always been an issue.

When I get a moment, I'm going to try smartgear on my windows mobile 6.1 rom and see if there is any difference.

I've got a suggestion that may or may not be useful. At some point it would be nice to be able to configure what video size to use on a "per system" basis, or on a per-resolution basis, as some game systems support multiple resolutions.

Good example, I play some NES or SMS games which work great at a video size of 100% on my 320x240 display, then I go to the GameBoy Color game and I want the video size for that game system to always be 150% so it fills up the screen more.

It's not a huge deal to have to change that switching between systems, but it would be nice.

Maybe a seperate menu that lists all the supported resolutions for the various systems that has a drop down box beside each one to indicate how you want to map it to a video size.

As an example:

256x240 -> 100%
160x144 -> 150%
352x242 -> 100%
Non-Standard -> 100%

Of course TG16/PC Engine seems to be able to generate a variety of resolutions so I don't know how you would handle that. But this would be cool.

Well bitbank, it looks like google has screwed you. I did a search on your site on google (searched on 'bitbank') and google came back and said your web site was not safe. I'm not sure what to make of it, but figured I should let you know.

Here is the URL of the search I did. Click on the first result and see what google has to say. Very unfortunate. If you are unsure about clicking on a link I'm posting here, go to Google yourself and search on "bitbank"

i did that and it still clicks.

Do you have your system sound turned on, so that when you do a File/Open you here the windows mobile sound effects for opening a menu?

I believe you can re-enable them in Sound & Notifications.

You have the method down right as far as I can tell. It may not work on the first try. System sound effects definitely have to be enabled.

bitbank i think there still is the clicking sound, but im not sure. it seems like when i play a game and there is a sound playing i can hear the clicking sound. but only while a sound is played, during silence there's nothing. has anyone else noticed this?

Yes I have experienced this too. It's not the same clicking sound that was an issue earlier, it's more like it's skipping.

If exit your rom, and file open it again, the sound should start playing smoothly. Don't ask me why, but that's how it's always worked for me on my Tilt. You can also use this technique to get 8-bit sound to play without clicking.

If you have your systems sounds turned off, this trick won't work. It has something to do with the Tilt re-initializing it's sound during a system event. When I press File/Open in Smartgear, system sounds are played to indicate the menu activation. I believe this has something to do with why the sound starts to work correctly the second time you open your rom.

Sounds odd, but if you can get your sound to work this way, at least it won't be just me having this strange issue. Try it with 16-bit sound turned off first. With 16-bit sound on, the skipping is a little faint, but with regular 8-bit sound it makes a quite obnoxious sound and is a lot more apparent. Either sound mode should be fixed by this trick.

I understand HTC does something different with their sound (as opposed to other manufacturers), but it's odd that other apps (not Smartgear) seam to be immune to this sound issue.

Another possible bug, or audio clue.

I've been using 0.35, and one thing I noticed about Smartgear, is when I set the volume level in game, the volume level is not retained the next time I open a rom. The interesting thing is, as soon as I either press on the up or down mapped volume keys, the sound volume suddenly seems to be remembered!

An example... volume on my Tilt is turned all the way up, I play some Super Mario Bros., and turn down the in game volume, almost to the point where's it's completely quiet. I go to load another ROM, and the sound is at full volume all of a sudden, as soon as I press the in-game volume up or down, the volume immediately drops down to where I had previously set it.

I wonder if this happens on other non-Tilt devices, or if this is a clue to the sound issues I'm having on the Tilt.

Larry, anyone else with a Tilt.

Disable 16-bit sound in Smartgear (or not, either way). If you go into System/Sounds & Notification and turn off "Events (warnings, system events)".

SmartGear will now click horribly with 8-but sound, or skip with 16-bit sound, on the AT&T Tilt, or Kaiser/TyTN II.

If you go back an enable the sound for "Events (warnings, system events)" you can now get the audio to work correctly with either 8-bit, or 16-bit audio.

When I go to open a rom, NES or otherwise, the sound often does not work properly the first time. If I exit the game, and then Go to File/Open, you'll notice the little bloops sound that is made by the O.S., I then go and open the ROM for the second time and voila! The sound is smooth with the 8-bit or 16-bit sound setting in Smartgear. It's not always perfect, sometimes I have to alternate between roms to get the sound to work.

The key thing here is that when my "Events" sounds are turned on, the little audible bloop noise mucks with the Tilt's audio mixing or some such thing, causing Smartgear to emit sound correctly. Why I have to re-open a rom a second time to get the sound to work, I have no clue.

The one thing consistent about all the roms I've tried, is I always turned the Events sound off, that's why I could never reproduce this scenario. I've now reproduced this on 2 roms, and I can say surely this happens on any rom that's out there for the tilt.

Larry, if you have a Tilt, this is something you can try. Turning off "Events (warnings, system events)" seems to make the issue quite prominent, and turning them back on and doing the little trick by loading the rom a second time, should correct the sound. Which with 8-bit sound in Smartgear, sounds just great on my Tilt after this fix.

So what is other software on a Tilt doing to correctly initialize the sound that Smartgear doesn't do? It seems those little system noises the OS makes when I do a File/Open in Smartgear somehow correct the sound issue.

I hope this information is far more helpful than my previous posts. I finally have a scenario I can reproduce with certainty.

At least now I can enjoy the software to it's full extent.

Anyone else with a Tilt, I would like it if you tried this out, don't use 16-bit sound, as it's more obvious when sound is or is not working.

Hi James,
Not sure what the trouble is. I'm using wavoutWrite() which is a very basic sound function to pump out sound at 15 blocks per second. I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but this seems to work well on all devices and Desktop Windows.

But it doesn't work... at least not on my device. Maybe it's not audio related, but timing related? Is all other software on my device not not using waveoutWrite()? If that's the standard way I doubt it.

It seems interesting, the times it did work, it crackled a couple times and then the sound immediately smoothed out.

There has to be a reason.

Didn't you say you had a Tilt to test with? Does this not happen to you on that device?

bitbank,

I've tried 7 different roms on my Tilt trying to see if I can find one that might work well with smartgear, 2 of which for stock AT&T roms. I did have some success with one particular rom and radio version. The volume trick fixed the sound in most cases for 8-bit and 16-bit sound. After I made or received a phone call, the sound would be messed up with either 8-bit or 16-bit sound and no tricks could get it to work. A soft reset fixed it for awhile, but now the clicking with 8-bit, and skipping with 16-bit sound has become permenant no matter what I do.

But I have to ask, if every other application on this device (Tilt) can play sound smoothly, what are you doing that your emulator can't? I really don't understand this one point.

PocketNester for example can play sound just fine but it can't reach full frame rate which is why I want to go with SmartGear...

Sweet baby Jesus! I figured out how to get the sound working perfect on the Tilt!

bitbank, some time ago I told you I got the sound working in NES games perfectly and I couldn't figure out how to reproduce it. This is before you implemented 16-bit sound.

Well I did figure out how to reproduce this, and it's not NES specific, it seems to be for any system emulation. I'm getting messed up sound in Turbo Graphics games as well.

And get this, this fixes 8-bit sound (horrible clicking) as well.

Ok starting off, I put 0.35 onto my tilt, loaded up Super Mario 1, 3, Final Fantasy... whatever. It doesn't matter what settings you choose for the emulator, the sound wouldn't work perfectly.

Here's how it starts to work. If you used the assigned emulator keys to change the volume either up or down, exit a rom, and re-open the rom, or another rom for the same system emulation, all of a sudden the sound is perfect! This works with 16-bit enable or not! So if I'm playing a nintendo rom, I change the in game volume, exit, open up another nintendo rom and voila! sound is perfect!

Once I go to run another system tho, like TG16, the sound seems to reset to it's messed up state, but the trick works here to. I open up keith kourage, change the in game volume (not the windows mobile volume in the top bar), exit the game, open it again and voila! sound is butter smooth, 8-bit, 16-bit, either way!

If I switch back to a ninendo rom, I have to repeat the change volume trick and re-open the rom a second time.

So is it really HTC devices? Or is there something you are doing with the change volume code that should be execute when any rom is first loaded and executed to initialize the sound properly?

I can't f-ing believe it. After weeks of screwing around I reproduced how I got the sound working On the HTC Tilt.

I've tried it about 10 times now and it works like clockwork.

Does this help?

Is the sound for turbo graphics games suppose to be workin on HTC devices? Out of curiousity I tried Keith Kourage on my Tilt and I'm getting the same skipping I am getting with NES game, except the gap in the skips is wider and more pronounced. Auto Frame skipping isn't helping any.

New build is up with the fix for the NES sound and the TG16 problems:

www.bitbanksoftware.com/smartgear_ppc.exe
www.bitbanksoftware.com/smartgear_sp.exe

There are still some problems with the installers that I'm trying to correct. When I "fix" the problems in the WISE script, the CAB file fails to install a shortcut in the \Games folder. I will need to waste more time researching this issue.

L.B.

When you say fixed NES sound, I assume by that you mean the pitch.

My sound still skips (all roms), but it is not the annoying popping sound it made before you implemented 16-bit sound.

mikeey,

Could you tell me what settings you are using in smartgear, and what tom you are using on your Tilt?

I'm running a slightly modified AT&T Tilt Rom from XDA-developers that has all the boatware removed, a new core o.s. and radio.

No other programs have audio issues, but perhaps in the case of smartgear, this rom is not helping.

Never mind the fact that like the first Blackjack, Samsung has screwed you again, because the blackjack2 keyboard does not register simultaneously multiple key presses.

So you want to do a little A+B action in Mario for a little jump while running action... can't be done, I tried it.

One loan guy writing assembler for an arm processor does not strike me as an easy task. I doubt bitbank gets that many registrations that there is any room for additional development resources.

I think people need to realize, that as far as I can tell, bitbank is the only one that is actively developing a decent emulator for Windows Mobile. I've tried many other emulators but none could run NES at full speed, even on the 400mhz processor of the Tilt/Kaiser.

Maybe there are lots of issues, but good progress is being made, and honestly, I'm impressed he keeps at it. Assembler is terribly time consuming to write and the sheer volume of different windows mobile implementations makes it all that more difficult.

I'm not happy about the sound, but beggers can't be choosers and there is nothing else out there I've seen that can approach the speed of smartgear.

It seems that the HTC devices are the ones plagued by sound issues, maybe I'll have to switch.

bitbank. I have some possibly useful feedback.

Could this have anything to do with NTSC roms vs. PAL (50fps) roms?

It's really strange. I installed the latest smartgear on my buddies blackjack 2 and his final fantasy rom sounds perfect. My Super Mario Rom still had skipping on his.

I tried his Final Fantasy on my Tilt and here's the weird part, sounds is skipping on the Tilt, but not on the BlackJack2 but only with Final Fantasy.

Ok maybe it's not super helpful, but it's super strange.

Well I've got a at&t 8925 Tilt (TYTN II/Kaiser etc) and there are still sound issues with 0.34.

I started smartgear 0.34, 16-bit sounds was not enabled. I loaded SuperMarioBros 1, it was clicking. I then went into settings and turned on 16-bit sound. This locked the game at a blue screen, However it didn't lock up SMB3. I Could not exit the game. I killed the emulator and retarted it. If you set the 16-bit Sound BEFORE you open a game, nothing breaks.

If you turn 16-bit sound off in the middle of an active game, the pitch of the sound goes really high.

With 16-bit sound option on, the sound has changed from a clicking noise, to a skipping noise. No more horribly griding clicks, but the sound skips about 4 - 5 times a second. Kind of sounds like it's cutting out.

bitbank, you tested this out on a loaner at&t 8925 (TYTN II)? The sounds isn't sounding so hot still.

I just tried running 0.31 again and I still had the strange clicking. I checked my task manager and there wasn't anything else running, at least anything visible. My Tilt was also not connected to my laptop.

I should try to be more clear about what I experienced about the sound, having worked properly in two instances.

In those two instances, the sound was not working at first when I launched Smartgear (clicking) but after some amount of playing with settings, and playing with the screen orientation (sliding out my keyboard), the sound suddenly worked.

I've tried and tried and tried and I can't reproduce how I got it to work two times.

I'm not experiencing anything odd with any other software. Smartgear does exhibit the sound issue on all varieties of the custom cooked roms I've tried on my phone as well.

QUOTE(bitbank @ Nov 15 2007, 15:54) *
Sorry I've been quiet for the last couple of weeks. Trying to ship some commercial products.

I'll try to answer all of the open questions here.

1) SNES support?

I've taken a stab at writing a SNES emulator and it works decently for a few games, but is much too slow. The CPU and sound of the SNES are not that daunting, but it supports many advanced video features with many layers which really kill the performance. It is possible to get full speed SNES on SmartPhones for some of the games which use minimal graphics features. Most games would have to look "wrong" to run at a decent speed. Overall it's not worth the time investment at the moment (especially since it will take away time from projects which actually make money).

2) Slide out keyboard orientation problems?

Windows should remap the direction pad codes when you open or close a sliding keyboard. The only issue might be if it's done AFTER you start playing a game. I have the S710 and old T-Mo MDA to test with. Please send me a set of steps to show how the problem occurs and I'll see if there's anything I can do to resolve it.

3) The clicking sound problem?

The clicking sound has to do with the audio buffers not being filled in sufficient time so there are gaps between the audio blocks. I've been battling this problem for a while and I thought I had it solved, but apparently not. I'll take another look at this one.

4) Use save states from other programs?

Saved games are stored in a programmer-specific, arbitrary way. There are currently no plans to support other software's save states.

5) ARM9 vs. ARM11 optimization?

There are a few new instructions added with the ARMv6 instruction set (in ARM11 CPUs). They won't have a whole lot of effect on game emulation; they're mostly for DSP applications. I code to the ARMv5 instruction set which works on all current and older PDAs. The biggest single factor limiting the speed is access to the display memory. All of the emulators within SmartGear use optimized assembly language CPU and graphics emulation. The remainder of the emulator code is written in C and for the most part does not have time-critical code.

6) Genesis Sound?

I have several powerful devices and will relook at this issue. Perhaps I can add a checkbox to the settings dialog to control it.

7) Strange speed issues?

I don't have access to the devices mentioned with the speed problems. Is it only the HTC TYTN II which shows the problem?

8) Latest release?

I've just wrapped up 0.31. The changes have to do with some fixes to the GameBoy emulation. As pointed out by some users, Pokemon Crystal had problems related to DMA timing and Dragon Warrior III had a bug which was caused by the C compiler. I'll have the build + new info up on my website shortly.

L.B.

Glad to see you're still around.

Something odd is happening that I can't reproduce.

Two times I ran version 0.30, I was mucking about with the settings and all of a sudden, the sound was dead on, no clicking. Something must be working, under certain circumstances, but I can't figure out why it happened. All other times it goes back to the clicking.

I've played around with all the settings and I can't reproduce this scenario again. Perhaps the sounds does work, but there is some other bug causing an issue relating to it. Vsync?

I've got the clicking sound aswell... and i'm using v. 30. Maybe it's a stupid question, but wouldn't it be possible to remove the clicking sound with a lowpass filter.. just before the sound is outputted? that shouldn't be hard to code (the lowpass filter i mean) ofcourse I have no idea how the sound system works..

I actually have the same sound problem with PocketNES .. the music is too fast.. and it clicks sometimes.. but it sortof goes away (the clikcs).. PocketGnuboy runs Perfect.. sound and everything.. but it doesn't support using the screen horizontal..

Well I get that strange sound, even when I turn sound emulation off! Now that's a wierd one to me.

Is the author of this emulator still alive? I would love to purchase this for my Tilt, if and when this little issue gets fixed.
