Hey bitbank,

Glad to know your emulator is out there. Honestly, I thought that by upgrading to the HTC diamond would make games a lot faster, but that wasn't the case. On my previous HTC Tytn (and even the HTC Wizard) game gear and NES games would play at full speed on MorphGear with no frameskip, so I'll be honest, I didn't have much interest in Smartgear. tongue.gif
But now that I have the diamond...the 640x480 resolution screen is beautiful and may have four times the pixels, but it also makes MorphGear four times slower. PicoDrive and PocketSNES also run significantly slower...I was about to give up hope of emulation on the Diamond when I remembered SmartGear.
Your emulator is by FAR the fastest on VGA screens. For example, with throttling turned off, Zelda: Oracle of Seasons runs at an average of 75fps on scaled fullscreen (that's taking up about 70% of the screen in portait mode), but in MorphGear, only taking up 50% of the screen the game only runs at 28FPS. MorphGear is damn slow.
Keep up the great work and I hope to see an SNES emulator soon!

Had HTC added an external microsd, I would have got a Diamond too. Four GB is too small for me with music, movies, South Park and video games on it. I have an 8gb on my Dash and it is too small. Need the expansion option.

Smartgear does rock. Rock EVEN better if he would port a verison that works on Nokia devices. The N95 calls me closer....

I've tried it and it looks awesome, navigation is fast, renders almost like on a desktop and overall it's a really good approach very different to Opera Mobile 8.65 and closer to Opera Mini 4.1. But the current beta has a nasty bug that disables most notifications (sounds, pop-ups and LEDs) for SMS, MMS, calendar, etc. At least that happens on my HTC Touch; but I'm not alone, many people on the Opera forums seems to be affected. Notifications are critical for me, I can't afford to loose one for an incoming appointment, so I uninstalled it sad.gif . I'm still looking forward a new beta more polished. But once you try it, it's difficult to go back smile.gif .

Current beta is for touch devices only, but since a lot of features are turned off, I would not install over my 8.65 anyways.

Hope it comes out soon, but the beta feedback will probably result in delays, because they will then release a beta with the features turned on. This is probably beta 1 out of 3. I expect a fall release of the final version.

LB,

I know you have been asked this, but...

Any chance of porting Smartgear to Symbian OS? There are a gazillion Nokia device out there. In fact, I am considering
getting a N95-3 (has headphone jack, camera and better screen than my Dash).

I think this is an untapped market. The java based emu's are not as good as your emu.

A real HUGE issue is that there are no Turbografx emu's for Symbian devices. Tears.

Just read the freaking thread, especially slugshot_90 - since you started a new one without even looking.

In short, there's NO SNES support yet, hopefully someday soon. Genesis games don't have full sound support, because the emulator is too slow with all sound enabled. Use Picodrive for genesis instead.

I thought the same about Genesis, but the Game gear and Sega sound is not much better. A lot have the same clicking or high pitched noise. I mainly play NES and TGX16, so it is not much of an issue to me.

I havn't heard from bitbank in sometime. How are things going? I noticed a small error in the newest version, it seems on my i-mate SPL when I use the game boy emulator and I start it up (not running in the background) and load up a ROM the buttons do not work until I quit the ROM and restart it. after that it works until I shut the program down. I don't know if it does this with the other emulators, as I usually only use the gameboy.

It has been one month since we heard from L.B., so must be doing other things I suppose. I will be happy if the sound gets fixed in Master System and Game Gear games.

Perhaps he is making sure the next version is a significant improvement?

It has been five years since MameCE has last been updated and 1 1/2 years since PocketCultMame has last been updated. Being an owner of a Palm device as well, I have noticed a more recent update to a portable version of MAME called PalmMame. It is based on MameCE and a source code is available to anyone who wishes to port it back to the Windows Mobile platform. While I do not own a Smart Phone, I noticed that the Smart Phone crowd on these forums seem to enjoy games and post quite a bit on emulation. I have no programming talent whatsoever, but wondered if anyone with such talent and love for nostalgia would be interested in porting this back to WM. PalmMame works with sound and functions better than MameCE or PocketCultMame (no intended disrespect to the authors). Vilmos, who works on this project, has given the green light for anyone to port this back.

Just in case anyone is interested: http://www.pocketdimension.com/PalmMAME.html

If anyone does work on this, hopefully you might include a non-Smartphone WM5/6 PPC version too. Those who love classic gaming would be eternally grateful.

I use PocketCult on the Dash and I am surprised games works as good as they do. Be cool if someone advanced the code for MAME on WM5 & 6 devices.

<br /><br /><br />

Way back in February, I asked a question and just realized that I didn't respond to your response. I don't know other features Super GameBoy had to offer, but for the Game and Watch Gallery (1st one), it made the games in color whereas without it, the games are in black in white. Further, the games have a frame that makes it look like the original Game and Watch games. I actually remember when those games came out and for nothing more than sentimentality, would like to see those games in color and maybe with the frames (which would unfortunately make the game screen a little smaller). I don't know how much more effort it would be to implement this feature or if it has any other feature that would make it worth your effort. I know that the GameBoy module for MorphGear has it though the program is a little unstable on my phone.

Good point. Morphgear's Gameboy emu played gameboy games with color. An example is the Galaga / Galaxian game on the Gameboy.
Morphgear plays that in color, Metroid or any other game that supports color. It also plays the mono only games in two colors of your choice- like Supergameboy platform does.

Hello L.B.,

Just to clarify, are you aware that most Sega and GG games also have the sound problems that Genesis games do? Clicking sound and distortion are common for most. I though the issue was Genesis only, due to the FM chip, but it seems to be common for all Sega platforms. Some work, but the majority have significant sound problems.

I still take the positive that TG16, GBC and Nintendo work very good.

Hi Bitbank,
Just wanted to thank you for making such a wonderful user-friendly emulator and wanted to ask you if you have any plans for including Snes in that long list of emulated consoles?
That is all.
biggrin.gif

Edit: Never mind tongue.gif I just read the last part of the web-page. Looking forward to the snes and improved Gen. Keep up the good work.

Wow, this may be the longest gap for no LB replies. Obviously busy with other things, which is understandable for anyone.

Well, I tried already some games, I recognize thou at most games that the Sound is not really nice, so I rather turned it off at all games. It mostly makes either small breakes or just has a bad Quality. Games seem to be very stable and full speed, excapt that the normal Save Function of some Games doesn´t work, but the rest was fully okay so far, thou for things like SNES I just miss Buttons on my XDA Orbit 2 to really try anything there. If there could be something done about that, it would be great.

As far as sound on my Dash with Smartgear's newest build:

NES = good sound
GBC = good sound
TG16 = good sound
Gamegear = good sound for some, but also poor sound or no sound (there is a screaching sound) for others.
Master system = poor or no sound (there is a screaching sound)
Genesis = Good sound for a few games, but bad to none for most.

Appears the new build back-slid a little, as far as Sega and Gamegear. NES compatability is way up, though.

why are some focused with this emulator when it can only emulate outdated gameboy color and game gear games...attention should be more of the gameboy advance and even ps1... GBA is working almost 100% in symbian phones compared to our wm devices

This EMU also plays TGX16 perfect and most of NES (better than pocketnester). I bring it up because, the Master System emu appears to have back slid a little.

1) Clicking sound like Genesis games now.
2) Whining sound on games that worked before (Bubble Bobble is example)
3) Graphic glitch (Gamegear)- for some reason, baseball's vanish when they are on the ground (grounders)in all baseball games. Okay, this issue has always been a problem with the emu, but I bring it up now.

As far as GBA, I agree that should be more a focus, since there are tons of good games and the games were designed for handhelds. Perhaps LB is looking at this?

Do not let my bug alerts come across as negative. This EMU still rates an "A" and is worth the $10 for TGX16 alone (For those that do not know the TGX16 games- you are missing out). I used to have a TGX16 and Turbo Express (TGX16 handheld) with a conversion card to play Japan games many years ago. Smartgear rocks! Galaga 88/90 is a religious experience.

LB

I have found more issues with the new build. SMS games now appear to have sound problems. All have a clicking sound and games like Bubble Bobble have a high pitched whine when sound is on. I do not recall this being an issue before.
After checking more, all Sega 8 bit games have the clicking sound and it is a mix as far as games actually having sound and ones that have the high pitch whine. I am not talking about Genesis., though the clicking sound and whine are the same.

The FDS files are Famicom Disk System games. I believe they require BIOS code. If anyone has definitive answers about FDS support I would appreciate it. Are the FDS games unique and don't exist as standard NES titles?

L.B.

L.B., speaking of disk based games, Sega has quite few also non standard cart games (Gaplus is one great game example on the SG format).. I think that is what it is. A lot of arcade games were on that format.

What I've found is that many NES games have incorrect mapper information stored in the header. I guess the other NES emulators have an internal list of the games with the correct mapper numbers. I have a few mapper corrections inside of SmartGear; I'll add more as I discover them.

L.B.

L.B.:

A few things:

1) Same difference as far as roms & mappers. Pocketnes has mapper issues and plays slow on my Dash (why, I do not know). All I know is that Smartgear plays perfectly and works on all of my favorite NES games now, so any improvement is just "more butter on the biscuit" for me.

2) You should also own a Dash. The near perfect device, if it had a 3.5mm phone jack- it WOULD be near perfect. Plays movies and music very well and games too of course. 8gb card makes it a fine all-in-one device. Just needs a 3.5mm jack, rather than needing a usb adapter.

3) PocketSNES is not as great as it seems, since it has about a 1/4 inch gap at the bottom- seems more designed toward landscape devices. Hope you get the SNES module working well & Genesis too, of course.

4) GBC Dropzone has corrupt sprites when playing. I think if that were fixed, some othe GBC games would also be corrected as well. Just a hunch! GBC works great too, so that would be more "butter on the biscuit".

Note: If a US Dash, you need to use a non-US rom that has SDHC support. For some VERY stupid reason, the US Dash does not support SDHC, so nothing above 2gb as a result.

Argus is a shooter on NES that I can not get to work. LB mentioned it does, but the ones I have do not work on Smartgear (black screen) but work on Pocketnester. The problem is, Pocketnester plays slow on my Dash, but Smartgear plays smooth as butter.

I guess Smartgear is a little more particualr on roms. I tried another Argus rom for NES and it worked. It appears that Pocketnester is a little more rom friendly, but Smartgear plays much better on my Dash than nester.

I have been messing around with Pocketsnes 1.53 and surprised how well it plays with sound on the Dash at standard cpu speed (not over clocked) & plays full speed with all games with no sound. If LB gets Smartgear working better than Pocketsnes as well as Genesis- WOW! Still, I see sound being a problem for both emu's, but I thought the same thing about the TGX16 and Smartgear plays those perfect- with sound.

I just released 1.0.4...

Lots of good fixes in this build:
1) Load/Save functions should work properly in all games (including Genesis).
2) More CPU bug fixes for the 68k should show up as better Genesis compatibility.
3) Fixed incorrect mapper # for NES game Pipe Dream.
4) Key definition now works when done from within a paused game.
5) Debug code removed from GameGear.

Basically all recently reported issues should be addressed.

Here's the link:

SmartGear Web Page

LB, good job on version 1.04 as far as improvements and bug fixes.

Genesis good news: The games that did work now play even better (smoother).

Genesis bad news: Only one game from my list graduated to working (Sensible Soccer).

1) At least one game stopped working (crash to windows) Wanni Wanni World.
2) Mega Swiv still has no sprites.
3) Some games that had black screens now crash to windows and some games that used to crash to windows now have black screens. At least they changed wink.gif
4) Again my reference is Picodrive, since all of the games on my previous list (except Super Bubble Bobble) work.
L.B.

I think you are heading in the right direction!

I have had this problem as well before in the past on previous versions. After doing a security wipe on my sch-i600 it worked fine. You may try that. Back Up Everything thou that you wish to keep before doing thou or you will lose it

I appreciate the advice, but with all of the programs I have on my Dash and the fact that I havee to bypass my locked Dash to get the rom that accepts SDHC cards, I will hold off for a fix, or just use Picodrive for Genesis games. I am a happy camper anyways, since it plays, TG16, NES, GBC and Sega fine. Gensesis to me is more icing on the cake.

I just released version 1.0.3 - sorry for the delay. I've been working on cleaning up the various CPU bugs and this build includes good fixes for the GameGear/SMS, NES and Genesis. Rushmore, please recheck the Genesis games which failed before; you should find that most of them now work. I still need to fix a few more 68k bugs.

The best way to help me is to find games which work on the desktop version and have a problem on the Windows Mobile version (or just behave differently). This would indicate a bug in my ARM asm CPU emulator.

Thanks,
L.B.

L.B.- in regards to 1.03:

Bad news: Genesis games lock my phone up now and I have to hard boot. Example, I tried Alien Soldier (one that did not work in the past) and Cannon Fodder (one that did work). Both locked my Dash up (black screen). Every game I tried did the same thing, so I will hold off loading anymore Geneis games until there is a fix.

Good news: Crisis Force now works and so does Blades of Steel (thanks!).

Edit: As far as Genesis games, I tried MUSHA and other games on my list that worked and all of them do the same thing: Black screen and the phone is locked up.

1) This game seems to run fine. What version of SmartGear? What rom version are you using? What are the steps to recreate the problem?
2) This game pushes the GBC hardware to the limit and I may not be able to fix it.
3) I haven't seen this occur. Can you give the steps to recreate the problem?
4) This game does appear to have some troubles - I'll see if it's the mapper or something else.
5) Genesis will load BIN and SMD files. What files are you trying to load? Please give specific examples of games which hang or load with no sprites.

L.B.

Here is my analysis of the Genesis module:

Notes:
*T-Mobile Dash with 8gb micro sd (games on card)
*Tested 122 games with version 1.02
*69% worked. People need to make sure roms are not "md", but are "smd" or "bin".
*Games that have status "Work: Not full screen" means the screen is squeezed in on the sides.
*Most games had little to no sound or a steady clicking sound. Slapfight is one of the few games that had correct sound effects in the test. I tried various settings, but same result. Should sound be working?
* All games work on Picodrive (except Super Bubble Bobble), but the ones that do work on Smargear work better.

L.B.

The "unrecognized file" error was due to some being named with md file names. I did not catch this because I thought Picordrive would have the same problem, but it reads md files. Changing the file names to "smd" has made about half of those games to work now. The other half that do not, have are either black screens or smartgear crashes, or no sprites (like Mega Swiv).

A lot of the games that crash Smartgear load up, but crash Smartgear when you try to start them (Killing Game Show) is an example.

I hope you can get it to work with more games, because I will pay $10 again for that. SNES would just be icing on the good cake to me.

Using latest version (1.02)

1) Not sure of the rom version, but it works with pocketnester. What rom version are you using that works?
2) I know what you mean, but kind of funny that an overclocked z80 is pushing anything to the limit wink.gif . I do understand what you mean. This is the number one non-working game for any emu. Apparently the game cart has a little assistance on board. I have the actual game cart, and it seems to have one more chip that others do not have.....
3) When you start the game and begin playing, the screen shakes / vibrates a lot. One of my favorite games, so I noticed quickly. Seems to be when the sceen scrolls and sprites make contact.
5) Examples. Please note that I am using picodrive as reference, because the roms I have work with it, but the ones that do work with your emu work MUCH better in regards to speed and accuracy of display.

Smartgear works a lot better on the games that do work, so it would be cool if more Genesis games worked. Here are some examples that work with Picodrive.

"Unrecognized file" = Alien Soldier, Arcade Classics.. as far as "A's"
Program quits = RC Pro Am Racing, Grind Stormer, Killing Game Show, Lightening Force
Phone locks up = Sensible Soccer
No Sprites = Mega Swiv

As far as NES, I would not mind on the games that do not work, but pocketnes does not play as good as Smartgear on my Dash. Pocketnes plays slow for some reason- even with other apps turned off. Smartgear plays perfect.

I am only posting this because you asked for bug reports, minus SNES, of course.

bitbank there is a strange bug with saving and loading. when i save over a save, an error message comes up, i cant see what it says cuz the paused game is in front, blocking the error message, i push around in the middle right of the screen where the X is so i can close the error message, but the game saved anyway. This also happens when i load a game. the games can load and save just fine, but an error message comes up which cant be seen either.

More game issues to report:

1) Argus (NES) = solid grey screen
2) Cannon Fodder (GBC) = Loads, but locks up at actual gameplay screen.
3) Blades Of Steel (NES) = screen shakes a lot when sprites contact each other
4) Cobra T
