oh.. there goes my multi-touch theory... do u mind if i post this info on my blog ?

Go for it, it's easy enough info for anyone to reproduce anyway, only took 10 mins playing around with the tool to see what it can and can't detect.

OK, I've download the NavDBG tool and played with it... strictly speaking this isn't multitouch, or not multitouch in the way that the apple looks at it. It's single touch but split into 3 areas. Basically imagine the button area at the bottom of the diamond is split into 3 columns.

You have 3 single touch areas:
1) On the left with the home and dial buttons
2) In the middle tracking outside the circle or also detecting a touch (not a button press) inside the circle. If you finger touches both outside and inside the circle, outside the circle takes precedence
3) On the right with the back and hangup buttons.

The multitouch impression comes from the fact that all 3 of these single touch areas can be used simultaneously.

This doesn't in my opinion open up brilliant options in terms of pinch to shrink spread to enlarge ala apple, but it does mean that a device fairly limited in terms of buttons could get a lot of good enhancements to useability.

My biggest annoyance with the device is when you are trying to gesture in TF3D or in an app (eg scrolling in opera) and it decides you've tapped mid gesture and follows a link etc, using the louch sensitive lower areas for gestures would eliminate this problem and make for a much better user experience (in my opinion).

Also, for games, the potential to use the touch sensitive lower area for a range of game controls would be great.

So all good stuff, but not strictly speaking multitouch.

There has been a lot of complaints about this phone, but I love mine. I think another factor is that this phone is just sooo damn sexy. It means rather than just being used by us mobile phone geeks, it's also being bought by lots of people who are less used to high powered devices and low battery lives.

I've been on windows mobile for too many years now, and the 2+ days I get from my diamond is pretty much exactly what I expect (I don't use push email, I believe it'll reduce your battery life)

The phone is fast in all apps, touch flow could be a bit more responsive, but with the latest ROMS (eg TLR3) it's a lot more responsive than it used to be.

I would say I'm totally happy with it, previously I was on a VOX which was a brilliant little phone, didn't want to go back to full sized "pocket pc" format devices, however the diamond is small enough, and I've adapted pretty fast to not having a hardware keyboard. It is MUCH better than my last attempt at 3g which was the Vario II which was a slow, draggy, annoying phone.

Mine only gets warm like this when I am using the GPS. It also gets a bit warm when charging. I find even if I play videos etc it doesn't heat up too much, but I ran tomtom for an hour the other day and the whole phone was ludicrously hot by the time I reached my destination.

I plan to try using an external GPS with tomtom which should 100% prove how much of the heat is from the GPS and how much is from the processor running intensive applications, but my suspicion at the moment is that it is GPS. It also just eats battery when the GPS is on...

You've peeled of the protective plastic it was packaged with I presume?

But seriously, apart from grubby fingerprints, my screen is crisp and very good quality. So it sounds more like a fault.

Saw a post on XDA Devs from TheLoanRanger saying he'd hopefully have a V3 based on 1.93.xxx up "tomorrow", so I'd expect we'll see it in a day or so.

We already know about the 1300mAh battery (and cover)...

A couple of other places also seem to list a 1800mAh version
http://www.clove.co.uk/viewProduct.aspx?Ma...DD-44D1B2BEF716

Photos of the battery do look bigger physically than the 1300mAh... anyone know if this is real? Any shots of the back of the device with this as I assume it is bigger than the 1300mAh one...

I'm looking at a little over 2 days if I just use it as a phone with light browsing and no push email. I have done the "advanced config" thing from XDA developers and switched on the extra power save items.

If I use GPS then it's more like 2-3 hours of sat nav :-( but I can always plug it into the cigarette lighter in the car. So does push email really consume that much power? Ie, halving battery life (roughly)

Yeah, that's my suspicion from what happened at the weekend. The other thing I'm considering, is how hot/battery use it runs at if you still use a external GPS via bluetooth. Haven't really thought about how to configure it for that yet... but it's probably worth a play.

QUOTE(spacerace @ Jul 14 2008, 09:36) *
that makes sense. so there is the danger that if a GPS capable program doesn't close correctly, the GPS could remain on without you knowing it sucking battery....

So, got my diamond, only had it for a couple of days, in general I'm pretty happy, some of the input stuff is a bit buggy, for instance if I type >don't< it gives me >'dont<.

Biggest issue so far is the internal GPS. When I run it, either google maps of tomtom7 it just eats battery and the phone gets very hot. One worry was yesterday, after running google maps with GPS, I exited google and ignored the phone for a while... checked later, most of the battery was gone and it was very hot... I think it had left the GPS switched on...

Anyone else played with the GPS much?

Got round to calling them just now, they're out of stock already... oh well, I'll try again over the next few days... Without even pushing the retention route (no point since there is no stock) they offered 39.99 as a charge for the handset.

Another relatively simple approach is to use either the emulator in the SDK or a pocket PC device.

1) Install TomTom6 to PPC emulator or Device
2) Copy files from /Program Files to your smartphone
3) Create a shortcut to Navigator.exe

then use either remote control or fake cursor to fire it up and configure it. Basically once you've configured it and got the gps working you won't need to use fake cursor again.

It all pretty much works perfectly, the only problem is that you can't select later options on a list, clicking the centre of the joystick selects option 1 but you can never select a later option. So when choosing your destination you have to be specific enough to have it at the top. It also makes favourites almost completely unuseable.

Good enough for me though ;-) And mine is running on the 6.1 "dodgy" rom and it works sweet.

My guess is that it's got the chipsets but in the end due to space requirements in the phone they decided to not include an aeriel, so it's gonna be a no go. Luckily I have an external bluetooth GPS so I'll just keep using that when I get one.

QUOTE(paholman @ Dec 5 2007, 21:59) *
Some have claimed to connect to only 2 satellites.

Just a shot in the dark, and I am clutching at straws here, but my N95 needs to have the keypad slid out in order to have the best GPS reception due to the location of the GPS chip.

I'm just wondering if the S730 GPS works if you slide the keyboard out. Is anyone willing to test this?

My device is a box standard Orange E650 (vox) in the UK. Regional Settings "UK English", Locale "English (United Kingdom)"

Changed my Regional Settings to "US English" rebooted phone and then the installer ran correctly. After the install set my regional settings back and it's working perfectly, reading a .docx right now...

OK, so I have a Hermes which "conveniently" disconnects from the GPS when I power it off. I do however ride a motorbike so it would be primo to run cameraware with the screen powered off and not taking any touchscreen input so I could drop it in my pocket and go.

Also, if I set it up to log to a db then couldn't the police demand access to the db and do me for speeding? (If I accidentally happened to go slightly above the limit that is)

Been forum trawling on this one... problem is rawframebuffer makes it work, but the performance is bad. Apparently switching off the radio stack and audio may help...

Anyway, one forum reckoned the i-mate rom resolved the issue, so seems like it's more an issue with drivers rather than TCPMP, hopefully a hermes ROM update from T-Mobile will be forth coming to resolve this and maybe also improve the battery.... (holds breath)

Has anyone else had issues around screen timeout? I keep running out of battery, but every time I look at the phone it's got it's screen on and the backlight running. I set backlight timeout to 10 seconds, but it just doesn't seem to care.

Just be careful, in the past I've read many many threads with "OMG my new device is so fast compared to my old one" or "OMFG the new ROM is a billion times quicker", a big part of the quicker is that it's all sparkly and clean after a hard reset and doesn't have a stack of SMSs, call history, calender, photos, installed apps cluttering the place up and slowing it down.

I've just swapped from HT632 to HT634 for the alignment issue and it;'s definitely a different build, some subtle differences if you look at the batteries and some of the gubbins under the battery cover. It does feel a bit firmer and the keyboard on mine requires hard pushing on the buttons. As to speed, I think it's a bit faster, but I'd noticed my previous Vario slowing down cos I was loading it up with all sorts of crap. This one starts clean and I have my microSD now so it should remain a bit cleaner... maybe...
