I just spotted this unusual Samsung i900 Omnia unboxing linked on MobileCrunch... I feel a bit cheated, as my unboxing process with the i900 definitely wasn't like this!

Nicely done I think... well worth a watch! (yes, even for you unboxing doubters!) biggrin.gif

Although this is technically non WinMo news, regulars will know that I have something of a soft spot for the new generation of 'netbook' mini laptops! Having been through a couple of Eee PCs, an Advent 4211 and now totally loving my MSI Wind, when I spotted this deal on hotukdeals I just had to share!

Basically, you can get the hot new Acer Aspire One in base 8GB SSD / 512MB RAM spec for a paltry £189.05 INC delivery!

To do so, simply visit this page, select home delivery and enter the code 'YAWAUG08' for the 5% discount.

Since I have the Wind i'm REALLY trying to resist one of these (altho it'd be kinda fun loading OSX on this baby?), but I know Mono is after one of these and is probably hovering over the 'checkout' button right now wink.gif

What is the one thing that iphone users brag about a lot? Multi-Touch, which enables them to perform features like pinch zoom in and out. Well, if this video is anything to go by, we are going to get this feature too, well @ least the HTC Diamond / Touch Pro users will...

Using an internal HTC application called Nav Debug Tool, the video shows that the whole front of the device can track finger movements, and even ** drum roll ** two fingers can be tracked simultaneously. So far there is no know feature on the Touch Diamond/ Pro that exploits this, but once the good folks @ xda-developers get their hands on the API I imagine we won't have to wait too long!

So what feature do you want with Multi-Touch? I am sure Paul should be getting some crazy ideas on how to exploit this feature... biggrin.gif

Mixtikl is the evolution of a niche, yet excellent, music mixing application called miniMIXA. miniMIXA was previously available for PocketPC and Smartphone for many years and even won a Bafta award! However, when owners Tao Group went bust just over a year ago, development of the third version of miniMIXA stopped. Luckily though, the real brains behind the software (Tim & Peter Cole - also the brains behind KOAN), managed to buy back the rights to the software they previously created and owned (before Tao took over) and went back into business.

Fast forward to the now and Intermorphic are gearing up to release Mixtikl to mobile music makers everywhere. Of course, Mixtikl will be coming to WM at launch but they also have plans for iPhone support and S60 support further down the line. The iPhone support may be a long time coming though as Apple impose certain restrictions on developers that Intermorphic were not willing to adhere to. That being said, Apple's loss is WinMo's gain as development is pressing on with a view to release October time.

Having reviewed the original miniMIXA app way back in 2004 (and loved it!), I can't wait to see what Mixtikl will have to offer! miniMIXA really was a truly unique piece of software. Being able to produce music that would change as you were producing it (using a generative music engine) was an amazing experience so I have high hopes for Mixtikl. Kudos to Tim & Pete for keeping their head in the game and not letting the demise of Tao Group take their awesome software out of the public domain.

Are these pics really the forthcoming Treo Pro previously known as the Treo 850? Originally posted at WMExperts, the details have now been removed from that site. Go figure wink.gif If there's ever a way to confirm a leak, then that is the way to do it!

I know this is an application that a number of people have requested over the past few years, so kudos to GeoTerrestrial for releasing GPSToday (and for FREE too!)... a GPS toolset for your Today screen!

From the GPSToday page...

QUOTE
* Does your device have an integrated GPS receiver?
* Is your device subscribed to an unlimited data plan?
* Is the device OS Windows Mobile 5.0 or above?

If you answered yes to all of the above, then GPSToday is a today-screen plugin just for you! Now Includes:

* GeoTerrestrial GeoWeather New!
* GeoTerrestrial GeoLogger New!
* and the GeoTerrestrial GeoTagger add-on for automatically geo-tagging/geo-coding pictures taken on your device!

GeoTerrestrial GPSToday offers a mind-boggling array of intuitively accessible features hidden behind a unique and clever interface.

* It utilizes intelligent algorithms to always maintain and display a fix on your position right on your today screen, without draining the battery.
* Always see your full street address, not just geo-coordinates.
* GPSToday always shows the distance to the nearest contact from your device's address book.
* Single tap to create a new contact with your current location as the address, or save the current location as an existing contact's address. Imagine not having to type the full street address on the PPC keyboard!
* You will never need the stylus to use GPSToday!
* Speed, heading and satellite data is shown clearly on the today screen whenever the GPS is running.
* In-pocket tap protection. A single tap on the today screen only operates the GPS in quick fix mode. To fully start the GPS in continuous mode requires an iphone like sliding motion, guaranteeing no pocket accidents.
* Single tap from the today screen to access fully draggable online maps!
* Always see all your address book contacts on the map. Just tap a contact to quickly call/email or send sms.
* Single tap from today screen to quickly do a yahoo local search around your current position and see the results on a live map. Just tap a result to call or open the website.
* High quality Yelp Reviews for local search results!
* Fetch the full street address for any point on the map.
* GPSToday automatically disables data access when your device goes into roaming mode.
* Install the GeoTagger add-on to have pictures automatically geo-tagged with current location!
* You can also manually geotag single or sets of pictures by selecting the desired location on the map.
* Supports 240x320, 480x640 VGA, 240x240 and 320x320 resolutions
* Now includes GeoTerrestrial GeoWeather which always shows you the current weather for your current location right on the today screen.
* Now includes GeoTerrestrial GeoLogger which allows for automatic logging of position updates to a file.
* And many more features.
* Best of all, its free!

Pretty sweet, GeoLogger and GeoWeather sound pretty cool too. With more and more devices featuring integrated GPS now, applications like this become more and more useful. The only possible obstacle I see is fewer devices now using standard homescreen layouts (i.e. TF3D instead).

Give it a blast and let us know how you get on!

Well its about time we heard some good news about the Sony Ericsson's highly anticipated device, the Xperia X1. It has a great specification and a cool new User Interface, and we started hearing about the device a while back with no release date in sight.

Here is a quote from reghardware.co.uk..
QUOTE
In a recent promotional email, retailer Expansys said that the phone’s “release date is set for week 41 (Oct 6-12)”. Expansys also said the "arc slider" handset will cost £590 ($1100/€740), SIM-free. The launch date is still open to some interpretation, though. An Expansys spokesman told Register Hardware that although it’s received “a couple of demo units through from Sony Ericsson”, he still didn’t have a confirmed release date - despite the email.

On the plus side, the spokesman added that the arrival of demo units is a sure sign that the handset will be available to customers in the near future.

Not long now... smile.gif

Quality Windows Mobile software purveyors are offering one of their games, 'Catchy Cadence', for FREE for Pocket PC and Windows!

Available for download at the PDAMill site, here's the lowdown courtesy of PDAMill...

QUOTE
Because Escaping from Sharks, Chopping Wood as a Lumberjack, acing a Dance Competition, Jumping Robots in a futuristic society, Sword Swinging, playing Tennis, making Sandwiches and simply Marching to the Beat (plus many more things) are way more fun than that. We know.

So much in fact, that we're giving away Jaybot's Catchy Cadence for FREE! That's right. Free. Free for PC and for anyone lucky enough to have a fast PDA.*

Don't worry, Free doesn't mean we didn't spend over a year in development and pour our hearts and souls into the game. We did, quite a bit, in fact. We just thought it was so darn exceptional, that everyone and anyone should be able to experience it.

What the heck is the game? It's a Rythm-Music-Action Game designed by our in-house maestro Game-Designer-Musician, Jason Surguine (aka Jaybot) with over 12 separate games and songs to play along with! Click on any of the buttons below to find out more.

Don't worry, it's simple and extremely FUN! No need to worry about complex button pushing or patterns. In fact, you don't even have to read the instructions
(although we did put some in of course, just in case).

See that 'Fast PDA' bit? In more detail...

QUOTE
Meaning, if you have a QVGA non-phone device, and HTC didn't make it, you should be good.We aimed to make the game for all decent PDA's, but HTC (a whopping % of the new devices out there) just decided to go the slower, weaker route with every new device they made, Sorry.

Eek, sounds like PDAMill aren't feeling the TI OMAP love... biggrin.gif

So let's see what devices it DOES run well on... get downloading and let us know how it goes! smile.gif

HTC have released a new driver pack for the Shift UMPC.

Available for download from the HTC site, the pack includes...

QUOTE
Intel Chipset Driver, Intel VGA Driver, Vista EC Driver, Touch Screen Driver, Synaptics Micro Pad Driver, Realtek Audio Driver, Vitakey AC5023 Fingerprint Software and Driver Update, and Extension Kit (USB, Lan Port) Driver.

The install process is somewhat untidy (installing each driver one by one), but is worthwhile to try and eke every last ounce of performance out of your Shift! Alongside the major driver update, there is also a hotfix to get windows sidebar working on your Shift and BIOS update to "enhance USB flash disk compatibility on the HTC Shift mobile computer."

Let us know how you get on!

Let me ask you what is one of the most anticipated devices of the year... it features Windows Mobile 6.1, a slick custom UI, it's own internal storage, a stunning design, minimalist buttons, speedy 7.2MB HSDPA, auto adjusting backlight, an orientation sensor, Opera 9.5...

Is it the Diamond I hear you say?

OK, so how about if I add it has a 5 megapixel camera with face recognition, smile recognition and a flash, a wide format screen, 16GB of internal storage AND a microSD slot, a 624MHz processor, a 1400mAh battery and you have probably guessed i'm talk about the other hot Windows Mobile release that's for once NOT coming from the HTC stable...

The Samsung i900 Omnia!

Courtesy of the wonders of eBay and FedEx, a 16GB Samsung i900 Omnia is what I have sitting in front of me now... which means it's your chance to quiz me on anything you'd like to know! Regular readers will know i've been giving the Diamond a thorough workout of late, so I should be ideally placed to compare the two.

Fire away! biggrin.gif

Regulars will know that i've spoken on MoDaCo about Napster before. I am a Napster to go subscriber, which means for £14.95 a month I can download as much music as I want to my PC, which is synced to my media center, and selectively synced to my device. The selection of music (if your taste is mainstream) is second to none, and now that the service has been established a while, it's rock solid! Sadly it's PC only (no Mac client), but hey, thank goodness for Parallels smile.gif

While browsing around various sites, I came across this offer.... instead of the standard 7 day trial, you can now sign up for a 30 day trial of Napster-to-go, which includes 5 free DRM free tracks. Free music! Yay! biggrin.gif

To get your free trial, visit this link to download the napster client, and during the signup process enter the code 'DSG1MONTHTOGO'. Easy... and let me know how you get on!

Any other fellow Napster users out there?
