anyone know if this is possible to make the scroll wheel more sensitive when navigating through icons in windows mobile UI? I know the scroll wheel definitely has the resolution.

A lot of the time the scroll wheel seems 'insensitive' due to the poor friction level on the surface of the wheel itself. On mine, this leads to it only actually turning during about 120 degrees when I use my thumb to turn it.

I 'fixed' the problem by applying a high friction surface to the wheel itself - an egrips spot with the center punched out. Very simple, and effective, not to mention inexpensive. The performance difference is amazing! My original egrips surface finally wore out after about 6 months, and was easily removed and replaced.

See the post here: http://www.modaco.com/content/samsung-i617...ed/#entry890839 for more info and discussion.

Hope this helps!

Cool, at least now I know I'm not missing something. Great phone, I like it more each day, I'll deal.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I charge it at night, but I follow this procedure religously as sometimes the alarm app fails when the phone just sits around with its memory all clogged by the day's work.

Turn the radio OFF (aka 'flight' mode)
Turn Bluetooth OFF
Set the alarm ON and to the desired time (not necessary if you always wake up at the same time)
Turn the phone OFF
Turn the phone ON

VIOLA! the phone's memory is clean, so it will work reliably, and with no radios on it will draw almost no power once the display cycles off.

FYI I charge mine at night anyway. I use a really nice looking charger stand you can get at Brookstone (in the US) and other places too. I usually lie the phone on the top and plug it into the charger.

You can see the charger stand here:
http://www.brookstone.com/store/product.as...amp;prodtemp=t1

Happy sleeping!

I see this ocasionally. I have found two causes/fixes.

The first cause is the conenctor cover design. Samsung seems addicted to these covers, that while attractive and functional. have a fundamental design flaw. The pivot point is too close to the edge of the opening, and there is a part of the cover that projects past the pivot. Together these result in there being a part of the cover that sits right beside the connector opening when the cover is swiveled "out of the way". A lot of chargers use connectors that project too far to the side of the port and they end up being interfered with by the cover when inserted into the port. Some are more subject to problems than others, with the inexpensive semi-generic connectors coming out of China being more of a problem than those from Samsung, although even those can foul up.

So some of the time I just have to be scrupulously careful about how the connection is made, and then the problem goes away.

Ocasionally I see this even when I'm taking unusually good care of the connection. I can almost always fix it by doing a soft reset (shutting down and re-booting). Remember, it's a Windows machine, so 99% of 'weird' things go away when you reboot.

Hope this helps.

After some research, according to Toyota (I am driving a 2008 Camry), the BJII is not supported by it's bluetooth system currently. I imagine the same is true for Lexus. I have discovered that the sound quality/echo issues only occur for me when dialing from the car system. Dialing from the phone or receiving calls, and the sound quality is good and there is no echo. So, I can't voice dial calls, which is unfortunate, but at least the system works fine in call. I can live with out the signal strength bars. It shows when I'm connected, and that's good enough for me. Hope that helps.

I have a Fix:

Buy a new 2009 Acura TSX. Up to date BT system + Up to date BT Phone = Driving Bliss! biggrin.gif

Or maybe it's just the intoxicating New Car smell blinding me to her blemishes - sigh wink.gif

OK, not the most economical solution, but definitely a fun one!

Cheers!

I have the same problem. Is there a fix?

One thing I know is that on my phone it doesn't get along with overclocking at all. If I want to use VC I have to set the phone back to 264 MHz.

It also seems to sometimes get a little tangled up with Photo Contacts as well. VC is a nice program, but not very tolerant of sharing system resources.

For my money, this is hte kind of thing that indicates thsi phone needs an upgrade to a much faster processor to keep up with things.

I'm curious of the answer to this Q also.

I don't know exactly how it will perform vis a vis the 'factory' speed or the most recent OMAP speed after you delete OMAP, but why not cover all your bases and set it to 264 Mhz with OMAP, and THEN uninstall/delete the files and re-boot. Which ever way it goes, you'll end up at essentailly the same speed.

Holy Cow! I installed my egrips yesterday and I've seen a HUGE improvement to the scroll wheel! It responds immediately, and it's fast. I'm relearning how to use it (in terms of touch sensitivity) because it reacts so differently.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO MadSci!!!!! biggrin.gif Thanks for the idea and posting about how to do it.

.......Now, if i can only figure out how to center punch the hole so it's not offset when I use my 3 hole punch..... dry.gif (lol, that's my fault.)

You're welcome, glad it helps! It seems that some people have an irritating problem with the scroll wheel on the BJ2, and others don't - curious.

I have to admit, when I did this for my BJ1 I got it centered the first time and thought I must be very talented rolleyes.gif But as I've had to punch out 3 egrips circles to get it approximately right this time, so I guess it was just luck before!

I am thinking about using one of the "dots" that was punched out to cover the central raised "button" on the spinner to make it a bit easier to use when selecting items. I'll post how well that works out shortly.

Good call, MadSci...

[For now?] my scroll wheel actually works better than when I first got my BJII. When new, it seemed to move "one unit," if you will, for every 1/4 turn of the wheel; and after a few months of use, I'd argue that it's down to 1/5 turn.

Like many of you, I've been very frustrated by the scroll wheel on my BJ2. I love it when it works, but it seems to have a mind of its own. Most of the time it gives erratic results, often appearing to ignore me for several turns before it jerks along in a herky-jerky manner that is frankly almost useless. Lately, it has gotten almost predictably poor. So much so that I found myself using the D pad exclusively, just to avoid the irritation.

Which got me thinking about whether this was mechanical or software driven, and if mechanical, why was the wheel binding so much more.

So I looked at it closely, then really closely, and I realized 2 things; I couldn't actually tell if the wheel was spinning when I tried to move it, and secondly, that Samsung seemed to have gone out of their way to make it smooth, with just the tiny concentric grooves on the wheel's surface.

What if the wheel wasn't actually rotating under my thumb, because it was too slippery, and the recent noticable decline in performance was due to a bit of wear on the grooves, making them even more slippery?

Remebering how Samsung blew the design of the circular D pad on the BJ1, and how I fixed it by attaching some egrips material to it, I tried it again on my BJ2 and voila! I now have a perfectly-working scroll wheel!

I am amazed at how much more efficient the device is now. I can really fly thru menus and webpages, and without the ache in my thumb from pressing the D pad 'down' button all the time.

All I did was order some of the 0.5" circles from egrips (www.egrips.com), then puch out a hole in the center with a standard paper punch. Then apply the resulting 'doughnut' to the scroll wheel, press hard and let it sit for a couple of minutes and - Presto a perfect scroll wheel.

If your scroll wheel's lack of consistent response is bugging you, give it a try and let us know what you think!

Way back I pointed out in the BJII Forum that there was clearly more to the BJII's LED capability than met the eye. Now QoreFunctions have written an App to take control of the otherwise nearly useless LED on this phone! biggrin.gif

It turns out the BJ II's LED has no less than 7 colours! QoreFunctions App allows you to assign any of these colours to an incoming event (email, SMS, MMS, Voice mail, Missed Call, Calender Appointment!) and to have it flash for anywhere from a few seconds, to indefinetly! This is just about Perfection!

It's available at: http://www.qorefunctions.com/ for $12.95, and there's a free 7 day trial too! I'm using the Trial version and I expect to purchase this darling little bit of code after a few days!

Go ahead and give it a try. If you've been missing a useful LED on you rphopne, hten this is for you! If you just might like to improve it, give the Trial a whirl and see what you think!

Of, and if you have more than one event occur, then the light alternates colours. How cool is that!

MadSci

PS: MadSci has NO affiliation whatsoever with Qorefunctions, just a lot of admiration for them! Thanks Guys!

OK, been using this App for a couple of months and I LOVE IT!
Samsung should buy it and include it in all their WM Devices, it would really be an nice feature to hawk.

Frankkly, I would hate to be without it at this point. Grabb it at a special price till the end of the month.

PS: If you like this level of notification, try the demo for Qorefunctions's EMailAlert. This will provide you with a customizable sound/vibration notification for each email account and text message. With this, you can tell by the sound in your pocket whether this message is coming into a low-priority source (ie to a shopping-type account) or a higher priority one (your work email, or your 'hot-date' account :-)

With the amount of email I get, I have managed it into many different accounts, and knowing which account is receiveing a given message saves me a lot of uneccessary digging out of the phone for low-priority messages.

Give it a try!

Let us know what happens please. Thanks,

My earlier advice has failed me. Over time the wheel has simply gotten harder to turn. I don't know if it's due to friction from gunck building up below the wheel, or that the top of the wheel has gotten smoother with use and I'm "spinning my thumb" and not the wheel.

On my BJ1, I used a "doughnut" shaped piece of egrips material to make the D-Pad easier to use. I've ordered some more (lost the original supply somewhere) and I'm going to try sticking some to the wheel and seeing if it helps out.

More news as it develops!

I love this idea. Their website is great. After installing to my BJ2, I found that I couldn't configure Trapster to utilize the onboard GPS, despite having run the app to fix the GPS issue. Googlemaps works fine with the GPS, so who knows how to get Trapster to use it? Personally, I don't like digging around inside the Regitry manually, so I hope there's a software fix of some kind.

thanks

I see your point. In my experience, and from other users, there shouldn't be any reliability issues at 276. The benefits speak for themselves, including a much improved response time for all applications and menus. Video playback is dramatically improved too. As far as battery life, I don't believe it changes much if at all.

Well I can give one good reason for overclocking. I have 2400 Contacts in my OUtlook Contact file, and at the standard speed the BJII is pretty pokey about finding the contact you are looking for. Upping the processor speed to 276 makes a HUGE difference. Not the expected 6% decrease in time to display the Contact, more like a 50 to 75% decrease!

I don't know why exactly, but I have seen it happen each time I lower the speed, and then push it up again.

As for the speed at which Photocontacts can retrieve the correct photo and display it, the same sort of effect is also seen.

At speeds greater than 276, the phone gets wonky and tends to lock up. At 296, it just doesn't work.

As far as I can tell, no-one has reported damaging their BJII by overclocking, probably because it becomes disfunctional at markedly higher speeds.

My $0.02

Well I guess that answers the question of whether it works for WM6. Too bad, I liked the idea. Perhaps they will update it soon.

What headset or earpice do you use with your BJII? I have a Plantronics Voyager 520 and an older Plantronics Voyager 510 and same problem on both...I would be open to buying a different earpice if I knew one that worked.... smile.gif

A Motorolla HS850 for the most part, and a Motorolla S9 sterio headset when I want to listen to music.

Both work fine.

Good luck!
