Agree the improvements make WLS the best free thing out there for WM. I have a Q9h with its now legendarily slow GPS "time to first fix" problem, but after installing WLS this morning, I got a first fix in less than a minute. Amazed, I restarted the phone to see if it might happen again ... and it did! So the question is, did Microsoft institute some trick to help the device find sats or has AT&T possibly instituted assisted GPS, or is this just a one day fluke? |

Thanks to all of you for working so hard on this problem. As a satisfied user of Google Maps (they have traffic in my city) and Windows Live (nice interface, easy look-up of information), I'm happy with the intermediate driver but wish the phone would get a first fix more quickly. My understanding is that adding a COM port will not speed that up when the GPS is making a cold start. I've been participating in similar discussions on the Moto support forum, where we got a definitive answer from Moto technicians that the GPS unit on the Q9h is fully autonomous - rather than aGPS which gets a head start on finding satellites from the nearest tower. Yesterday, wmexperts.com reported on a simple way to teach the Sprint version of the Q9 to use the assistance servers on the network: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/howto/ha..._on_sprint.html I wonder if AT&T has implemented something similar and the Q9h could be taught to pull that data? All the carriers are doing so as part of the E911 requirement, so it should be on the way. I'm no techie myself, but it seems to me the only way to improve first fix without severe battery drain is to narrow the range of sats the device must search for - the "a" in aGPS. |

So, it was very thoughtful of Moto to provide Docs to Go on the Q9h. But, my office has now "upgraded" to Office 2007 and the new docx, xpsx, etc. formats won't open on the version Moto provided. Dataviz tells me the upgrade is $30. Microsoft has released an update to Mobile Office that will open the 2007 formats, but it doesn't appear that Mobile Office was left on the Q. Purchasing Mobile Office is $50. Any free solution short of the awkward need to ask people to resave/resend documents so I can read them? |

I've posted a longer note under the Q9h thread, but I'll just drop in my two cents here that, with the fix installed on the Q9, gps works amazingly well. However, battery drain is a real issue - it is definitely draining power when installed. |

After one week with the Q9, my only complaint has been the GPS - seriously, this is a great device for both phone and win mo. Waiting for a long while, switching programs, all that makes the gps too much of a pain to really use on an everyday basis - really defeats the purpose of having it in the phone if it isn't quick and easy. So, I was thrilled to see the solution here. With the fix installed, gmm and live both locate me immediately, which is great but also evidence that the gps unit is now always on and tracking. At the same time, battery life is clearly affected by the change - draining much faster than before. In both gmm and live, the connection works with either COM5 or the default intermediate driver. This suggests to me that the fix works (on the Q, at least) by keeping the gps active at all times, not by the incorporation of a COM port. As has been suggested in the BJII discussion, the ultimate fix will require the ability to turn gps on and off independently. When you are going to be needing the service, turn it on, then turn it off to save battery life. In the meantime, installing/uninstalling the current fix is still a damn good solution compared to the alternatives. Thanks for the great work. Hope this feedback helps. |
