Has anyone had success using a 3G phone over USB or bluetooth as a data modem?

Or dual-booting XP and OSX?

I have no probs with dual boot and no problems with BT PAN with a Samsung BJII. I will be getting rid of the dual boot soon as I have basically no use for Windows with OSX getting the battery life it does with coolbook. Office 2008 for Mac replaces the need for Office 2003 in Windows. There's nothing left in Windows I need and if I do I'll install it virtually.

As I said before about BT, it works very well and reliably now. I had issues with BT in the beginning but there are a few posted workarounds for getting it to work properly. Since removing the BT connection from Networking preferences and leaving only BT Pan it never flakes out. It would probably leave issues for other devices though but I dont use any other BT function so dont need the BT connection part. Initially I also needed to delete a previous pairing with the phone from BT preferences but removing BT Connection has fixed it entirely and I can leave the previous pairing and reconnect every time without issue.

Here's the USB device I ordered. Not cheap but I have had a few hackintosh machines and no doubt will need something like this when I try OSX on another unit...

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/...em/SP-USB-MIC-1

Problem with this device is it's not tested by anyone with a Wind and needs a skype plugin installed to drive it according to the website...I hope I dont need to install anything for it to work with iChat....I consider myself to be taking one for the team on this one, it says mac supported but I wont know to what extent until it arrives.

There's also the turtle beach device but it's not available worldwide from their site (google: turtle beach USB sound). I didnt know where else to get it from, it's white and would have looked pretty slick hanging out of the Wind (mines pearl white). It also has a dedicated volume control button for headphones which would have been handy for simple adjustment without disturbing the Wind as it does it's thing (like playing music or a movie):

http://www.TurtleBeach.com/products/amigo/home.aspx

Although it states not supported by OSX on the site a user at msiwind.net has tested one and it works flawlessly. I tried to find one on Ebay but nothing was listed....

Until sound is fully working (if at all) this is the all in one solution for headphones/MIC thats small enough to not be a hinderance and can be plugged in when needed in seconds. The thought of using a BT headset or some form of USB headphones made me shiver!! Built in MIC was a must have as I love ichat and wearing something while chatting sorta kills the whole experience for me, each to their own.

Out of all the times I rebooted I've probably lost the battery icon 4 times. It's a small quibble but not one that breaks the experience, a reboot brings it back 99% of the time. I must say thanks to Paul for all the info and the great tutorial...If you have ever set up a hackintosh before youll know that it's trial and error to get certain things working properly and this includes testing kernels, .kexts, and finding solutions to quibbles before you settle on a a mix of what does and doesnt work. A1 effort on his behalf ( and the Kalyway distro)

Hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I do, truly the best hackintosh I've had out of 4 laptops, it has what I need to be truly portable on a non Apple device.

Hi
I don't have a medion akoya, I have an advent but I have been experimenting with the MsiWindosx86 with mixed results.

It installs much more smoothlyand with less steps than Paul's method with Kalyway and seems to be fine, but I have had issues with Bluetooth not working properly, USB devices not being recognised when plugged in after system has started up (ie, if they're plugged in before startup then the machine recognises them after boot).

In the end, I've reinstalled using Paul's guide and Kalyway as it seems to be more reliable.....I'm sticking with that for now.

I'm still using Pauls method and Kalyway 10.5.2

I've also seen some of those problems reported using the MsiWindOSX86 distro from other users. At least with the 10.5.2 Kalyway release all those things work. I havent had any problems with my install yet. I sleep my unit and the only odd thing that occurs is the wake from sleep...the mouse (touch pad or USB wireless) goes berserk for a second (only if you move it!!), other than that it's probably close to perfect (nearly, need internal MIC to work).

I have ordered my USB sound dongle with built in MIC and MIC/Headphone so sound is solved for the time being. Bluetooth is partially solved by deleting the Bluetooth Connection from networking preferences and leaving just Bluetooth PAN in there. Also the standard BT icon is useless at times, if it blanks out and the "on" and off" switch is blanked out the solution is to download istat menu's and replace the BT icon with that of the BT monitor button from istat menu's, you'll be truly able to turn on/off the BT button even if the original BT button was blanked out at boot. Under BT settings you can remove the normal BT button from the menu bar. So far on the 6 cell battery my Wind came with I'm getting 5 hours in OSX with coolbook app installed.....

Sed8ed,

You indicated in an earlier post that you had an invoice for the adapter.
How much was it?
Please give an indication of the cost.

For the adapter to fit into my StarTrek, I've thought of a dirty but quick solution.
Because of the extra bulk, the Cingular 31xx's back cover can accomodate the card easily.
I'll have to downsize the battery to the standard one in order to achieve that.
Summary of items to purchase:
1. SD-to microSD Adapter
2. Standard Startrek battery (less runtime)

Konker

I'm on holidays ATM but from memory the invoice stated roughly $57.00 U.S posted to me in Australia...it may be less for those in the same country as manufacture that's why I didnt mention it before. Thats why the cost earlier as stated was roughly $100.00 U.S for all the bits including the spectec card....

All you have to do is email the company regarding shipping to your address...they send you an invoice payable by CC or other means....you dont have to pay for it if you dont want to.....

Thats why I said email them, you are under no obligation to purchase, they just send you an invoice.

QUOTE(hagan92 @ Jul 8 2008, 02:38) *
Hey konker, just search for it on the google. To me there's lots of limitations!

1. Spectec has a card that states it is specifically for the Moto Q, and what the reason is, I don't know! But that is the closest phone to the Blackjack 2, so in terms, I would buy that one.

The problem: We haven't found a downscale adaptor for a MiniSD to MicroSD. There is a SD to MicroSD available, but it makes me think, that since there seems to be a special version just for the Moto Q, that that WIFI card would give us the best chance.

2. If it is advertised, talking about the Moto Q, that gives me hope on the driver issue. Moto Q's are smartphones, and they have the exact OS as our friend the BJ2.

The only problem now seems to be that the "Special Moto Q WiFi card" is a MiniSD, meaning we yet have an adapter to convert it to the MicroSD we need for our phones. If you find a MiniSD to MicroSD, let us know. (WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT A MICROSD TO A MINISD GUYS...)

3. Price. Price. Price...If someone here wants to be the guinea pig, be my guest! But it would be my luck for me to try it, break my phone, and it not work. tongue.gif

For what it's worth,

Hagie92

As far as break the phone is concerned it wont!! The adapter rules out any soldering required. You slot one end in the Micro-sd slot and the other has the wi-fi card slotted in ready to go. Load up the drivers and if it works it works.....No need to even open the phone to test. To purchase the SD to micro SD adapter all that's needed is to email the company and they'll send you an invoice, I think you pay via paypal/credit card....

Drivers are available for the spectec SD cards for wm5 and wm6...There's no need for specific downgrade mini-sd to micro-sd adapter, it will work with SD cards as well as mini SD, the pinout's handled by the adaptor. I also dont think you need a specific motorola Q9 wifi card.....It'll either work or it wont, thats the deal here nothing else.

I'm not prepared to be the guinea pig for now so I havent purchased anything.......I'm interested in other things right now (OSX on my MSI Wind netbook) so all the BJII needs to do is supply me with internet and let me make calls. Wifi on it is the last thing I'm hanging out for!!!

QUOTE(konker @ Jul 7 2008, 15:35) *
Why is it that Spectec manufactured a different SDW-822 MiniSD card for the Motorola Q8/9?
The specs looked in everyway the same as the standard SDW-822 card that I bought.
In the instructions, it even stated that the drivers is compatible with the Moto Q8/09 models listed (http://www.spectec.com.tw/sdw822-moto.htm).
I would assume that the drivers for both are the same but perhaps Spectec packaged the card for the Motorola Q8/9 as a special accessory deal with Motorola.
This leads me to think that the same drivers are compatible to current WM6.x Std devices.
I downloaded the WM6 drivers for the MotoQ & installed it on my WM6.1 Std Startrek.
The installer did not indicate that it is not designed for WM6.x Std OS.
In the Add/Remove program menu, I see a new "Moto Q WM6 Driver" entry.

To be honest, I havent treid it out. It seems so simple...buy the adapter, buy the wifi card, stick them in and apply drivers and see if it works......but the $100.00 barrier is still there. Considering the adapter is easy to acquire I wouldnt even bother breaking out the soldering iron....it's a simple slot and try option. Worse case scenario is that the card has to be listed on ebay and youll have an adapter you use occasionally to hook up a standard mini-SD card to.....for whatever reason lol.

Would love to see someone give it a crack...I have just purchased my MSI Wind Netbook and it'll be here tomorrow hopefully. Then I'll be able to join all the Advent owners over in another thread....more MODACO..yay!!! but for now I'm broke....

Me too. My fix if the wall charge isnt occuring is to power off the device and pull the battery, leave for 5 minutes. Place battery back in and it will charge properly from the wall again.....It's only happened to me twice and is annoying but can be overcome.

I have tried miserably to get my bj2 gps working. When I run gpstest.lnk on my bj2, it seems to get a lock in about 5 minutes. I have application unlocked my phone and just installed modaco hack. But once I run Garmin XT, even with GPS test in background, garmin keeps on searching for "scanning attached/scaning bluetooth" crap. What is going on? How do I get to the option screen where I can select COM4 and Intermediary in Garmin XT? Please help me.

It's scans for a bluetooth device when it's not unlocked for use with the intermediate driver......simple. If you get a lock within 5 minutes there's nothing wrong with the GPS!! You change the option to intermediate driver under "settings"...."remote GPS". It wont show up if the software isnt unlocked....

Garmin XT doesnt require any hacks........if the software is installed properly and all the maps and software unlocked you dont even need the GPStest.lnk to fire up the GPS...Garmin will do it itself when you turn it on. I'd say your software isnt unlocked and you dont get the intermediate driver as an option..

The application unlockers dont unlock software for you!!! They unlock the phone for use with third party software or software that wasnt signed by Microsoft.....

Read a few more threads....

yeah thanks sed8ed, I saw that on some other post, but it worries me that their may not be enough space inside to fit that thing in there! haha, also, I like that idea so you wouldnt have to solder, but you would have a little flexible thing coming out of the phone to fit in the microSD jack! tongue.gif

I dont believe these wifi cards have any user-usable memory. sad.gif

And also, I'm pretty worried about those drivers, I could just imagine me paying that money and it not working! haha, just my luck.

Kinda off subject, but even though i LOVE my blackjack 2...i am about 99.9% sure that i'm gonna sell it for the iPhone 3G (hey, its the same price as the blackjack!) So, I guess this time next month, Ill have internet on my cell. I just wish that MicroSD card would come out

Thanks for your help sed8ed, and it would still be great to find a good solution with this...

-Hagie92

Yeah the iPhone 3G is looking good......unfortunately I think the Australian telco's are going to ask for kidney donations in order to get one. I cant get one until I know it will share an internet connection over bluetooth with my provider...Once confirmed I am also probably going to jump onboard and get myslef a dirty 24 month contract...

I love the BJII like no other phone previously..(well I did love my AT&T 8525 but not as much) and the BJII has proven to be one of the most stable....only my old N73 Nokia came in a close second/third....

My main gripe with the iPhone 3G is I want dedicated Sat Nav with Voice/Turn by Turn instructions.....I also want A-GPS turned off and standalone GPS on!! Will have to see what those nifty developers push out for the future and keep an eye on the pricing.

HA...the same thing happened to me!! nothing but crickets and tumble weeds.

An adapter has been produced and can be purchased..

I actually have an invoice here for the product including price and shipping but the adapter is for SD cards to micro SD.

Basically it solves soldering anything at all but as a result you have to pay!!! Thing with the BJII is the chipset is said to be SDIO compatible yet there's nothing around to slot and prove it....

If we could some way marry a spectec donated card from a user and try and get the adapter as a review unit we could be on to something.....

The whole thing would cost me about $100+ USD to just try out....and there are no guarantees, we would most likely need a driver of some sort ripped and ported from another device...but then still no guarantees it would work. Unless we physically try it will always be a "what if" situation. I dont have the cash atm as I am saving for an MSI Wind UMPC due in a few weeks.......

Here's the adapter:

http://www.ameri-rack.com/APA-TFC1m.html

I could easily get that inside the BJII neatly and professionally....Question is do the spectec wifi cards have any memory onboard?

Drivers for the card:

http://www.spectec.com.tw/Download.htm#wlan

Windows Mobile 6 listed...doesn't say anything about standard edition.

So there it is......

What did i do wrong?

Well, you didnt use the search function... Basically you need to use GPStest to trigger the GPS and then fire up google once you have obtained a lock.... Try reading the "The Lost Souls thread of tips" for more info regarding GPS and the DO's and Dont's.....

Sorry Guys,

Don't have a camera with me, but Sed8ed's post seems to clear it up, in a very sarcastic way, that this has already been done...(just trying to help..)

-Hagie92

Hey, didnt mean to sound sarcastic...no offence was meant. Thing I've noticed in the BJII thread is heaps of double posting!! Lots of threads being started regarding the BJII about things already discussed or figured out.

There's a thread "The Lost Souls thread of tips" if many newbies actually read it they would see whats been covered. It still get's updated and covers the most basic of unlocking procedures with links to full info on what does and doesnt work on GPS.....

I guess I'm getting old but posting a about something thats already been mentioned usually means that person is too lazy to look, if they took the time to register with the site they could at least do a search!!!

I understand you were curious and wnted to help out....not problems with that!! Adding to the community is what it's all about....but lets keep it simple and easy to read without duoble post on subjects. Even if a thread is old revive it with a new post instead of starting a new one.

regards,

Peter

Hi all,

Well it happened...Tthe plastic outer screen on the BJII is cracked.

Believe it or not it fell off the dash of my car and landed face first into the carpet mat on the drivers side and right onto a stone that had been brought into the car....how unlucky!!! Very unlucky...

Thing is the LCD screen isnt cracked but the plastic overlay (looks clear like the buttons) is cracked on the left hand side. It's not big but it will spread there's no doubt about it!!!

SO....Spare parts links anyone!!! Can I get a new housing or not. I havent seen them. Any lovely American citizen willing to see if they can source one....I'm in Australia where they dont stock the BJII...

I'm so totally bummed....still thankfull it wasnt the LCD screen though. I'll post some links to pic's shortly, I just got home from a long weekend and the wife is yelling at me to get of the PC as I am apparently on it all the time and I havent bothered to "say hi"....

Add insult to injury lol.........

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

put it down too. don't hold it in your hand. i find when its sitting completely still, it acquires the signal faster. i find if i use the gps at the same time in the day as i shut it down last, it aquires the signal IMMEDIATELY (or within 10 seconds). if i turn it on later on, as long as its stationary and outside, it acquires a signal within 1-2 minutes, every time. its when i turn it on while I'm driving down the road that it can take up to 10 minutes.

Man I never suffer that long...

Ever since I set it up properly initial lock is under 2 mins cold boot (outdoors) and roughly 3 mins indoors. Hot start is unreal...less than 10 seconds, if i go through the domain tunnel (Melbourne, Australia) I lose sats in 5 seconds....soon as I pop out the other side I'm back up and running in 10 seconds....no lies. My BJII has held 3 bars signal on commercial aircraft at over 500 klm/hr using Garmin....better than my old BT reciever (also sirfstar III chipset) as it gets faster it obviously cant keep up but it definitely has proven itself....

Best thing I ever did was remove all hacks and Hardreset!!! Since then it's flawless.

Hey all, I dissected my phone in order to answer some questions I've found on here. (The phone still works!)
  • The BJ II DOES NOT have a WIFI chip. Period. Sorry to smash all hopes... sad.gif
  • Space is VERY limited inside the phone...so a mini WIFI card conversion thingy would probably not work either. (HURRY UP SPECTEC!!)
  • The BJ II Has a SINGLE stereo speaker for music, games, etc...and a SINGLE speaker for calling.
Ummm...if you have any other questions, please ask...i'll take it apart again if i need to.

-Hagie92

God nobody uses the search function...Already done!!!!

http://www.modaco.com/content/samsung-i617...-internal-pics/

Wifi was discussed ages ago....

There's a new product on the market with an adaptor from microsd to sd thats sdio capable...the guts will fit inside the BJII it's just a question of whether or not it will work with Win Mobile Standard edition. The chipset in the BJII supports SDIO devices and Wifi....just have to spend the money on an SD Spectec wifi card and the adapter (about $100 USD) and see how it goes.......

And yes it's tight inside the BJII but modding can be achieved...

Now that is something.....

I originally wrote about making an SD adaptor for the BlackjackII ages ago....very nice to see that someone actually manufactures something I wanted to try out.....I took internal pictures and what not of the BJII and even found the necessary pinouts to convert the micro SD pinout to the SD pinout...

Very nice....I could definitely mod my BJII to accomodate the SD card holder and just run the ribbon cable within the phone and hide the lot...

Now.....How much and where do I pay!!! I'd get one purely for the SD adapter part....I've got some big SD cards here I could use even if the WiFi didnt work (dont we need drivers to make it work??) and is the BJII actually SDIO capable? This has never been answered properly and nobody has actually tested an SDIO device in there. The chipset the BJII is using does support SDIO but it remains to be seen if it works.

I'd be quite happy to put my BJII up to be the bunny so to speak....

But the real professionals need to actually comment of the possibilites of it working....last time this was talked about it was sitting at a 5% chance.
Apparently there is some Wifi files floating about in the BJII whether or not they could be used remains to be seen. Someone has to pay up to try it all out. Who's it gonna be....If I know the price for parts I'm in. I'll take dirty big photo's and blog the lot and if it fails I'd like to know why and how to maybe fix it...

If someone here is savvy in the techno areas ( be able to get drivers working etc or figure out the failures) I'd also be prepared to donate to the cause...

It's funny my original post regarding this subject had only about 3-4 replies yet 1,700+ views and nobody mentioned something like this and I wrote that back in Feb...how technology moves.

Here's my original idea...this new piece of info jumps through all of that and leaves only money and the proabability as the final frontier...

So basicaly i need to remove SIM lock before I can do anything?

NO!! The device id is generated when you buy Garmin XT...it's based loosely on your IMEI number (unique code).

Did anybody got any luck getting i616 (North american version. Sold in canada. FIDO and Rogers) to work with GPS other than Telnav?

I installed Garmin. But it seems like it cannot find GPS device. It keeps scanning for "Attached" and i dont think it finds anyhting then quits.

Sotware's not unlocked...Garmin needs an activation code to unlock it for use with the intermediate driver. Otherwise it scans for a bluetooth device.

It'll find nothing unless it's unlocked. Nothing in these forums will unlock it for you!! The unlock is directly related to your device ID/IMEI number.

Sweet looking update...it needs to released A.S.A.P....so that I can play.....LOL

Wouldnt mind seeing a cooked up version either. Alas XDA developers have shunned the smartphone edition and wont work on it.... I remember seeing a forum thread over there regarding the BJII and starting a ROM discussion section....it was declined, mods must hate the Standard Edition LOL.

I paired the BJII to my car however when I recieve or place a call, during the conversation with that person (Not to be confused with three-way calling this scenario is just a basic A to B (or B to A) call), I hear my own echo in the transmit. When I ask the other side of how my voice quality is they say it sounds like its coming from a tunnel (hall effect). However if I switch to use handset mode and then back to use headset (connects back to the car) the issue gets resolved and the voice quality improves. Anyone have any ideas why this might occur?

I did not have this problem with my previous Motorola Razr huh.gif .

In fact another issue I see is: The car used to display signal strength and battery life for the Razr however for the Blackjack the signal strength is always 0 even though the phone is showing full bars, same goes for the battery mad.gif .

I think the issue is in the Bluetooth version being used that is causing the problem. I had purchased the Razr when it initially came out so the Bluetooth S/W version on it is much older then on my BlackJack.

Any help on this topic would be much appreciated. Technical replies are welcome.

The Bluetooth in th Blackjack II is 2.0+ whereas the Motorola Razr had 1.2...there was a few Razors released so if eloborate which model you owned. Without knowing the specifics of the razor I would say it's a compatibiity issue...

If the Car doesnt list the signal or battery strength of the BJII so I would presume that due to incompatability it cant pull the info from the phone...

I could be wrong but it wouldnt be the first time things havent worked together due to upgrades in the standards......

Hi guys, I'm relatively new here and I know that there is a gps feature on the Blackjack II. I was just wondering, can I get it for free? If so, how? I have searched for other posts here on MoDaCo on this topic, and could not find anything specific. I don't wanna make it look like I didn't try finding help first. I know how to use cab files and stuff like that, I already have PocketSNES. So can someone guide me to a tutorial? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
hockey4life

No offence Hockey but you must not have searched hard enough.....there's heaps of info here!!!

This particular section for the i617 is plagued with repeat requests....Although I do have to admit the search function of this forum is a bit sucky it still works....

I could (just by doing a quick glance) see quite a few threads relating to GPS.....

Garmin XT works the best on the BJII......have a search around for Garmin XT on the BJII. There's no wares at this site!!! So mention of it will result in some deep trouble....

*by the way your not in trouble...just some guidance regarding the site...:-)

Well here's my review so far of the Garmin Mobile XT Update v42.0.52w:

With the new update... I've noticed that the Recalculations of routes takes much longer now than Original Install. This Kinda SUCKS!!!

Also noticed that my GPS now uses some "Intermediate Drivers" instead of COM4. I seem to get more lose of GPS with these Drivers. Even when I manually set it back to COM4... the damn software gives me some crappy Icon on the top left for a bit and then goes back to those damn "Intermediate Drivers". I think I will uninstall my Garmin and Go back to Original Install till they come out with better drivers. Anyone else who's tried the Update experience this as well?

NOTE: I just noticed on another Thread that the COM4 Unlock can interfere with the Intermediate Drivers so I just Uninstalled them. Will try this one more time before I Revert Back to original Drivers with COM4.

Hi FAF_DRAKO,

There's never been a need for the com port hack for Garmin XT...some people use it but it just causes issues.

Although the calculating route takes a little while (It was slow to begin with) it's not that bad, I actually get a lock with the intermediate driver in less than two minutes line of sight to the sky....roughly the same in the car. Since this version of Garmin XT it's the most reliable it's ever been!! In fact I have had very little issue apart from installing it since I got my BJII......

Give it another go!! The only thing thats bad about Garmin XT is the map lag....it may be one of two things...the processor in the BJII or the code in Garmin referring the update position of you on the map against the satellite's current data.....the lag is noticeable and something I experienced with my old N73 nokia with a BT GPS unit...despite that unit being flawless with just about anything else it was connected to....

I've played with baud rates and all sorts but the map still pans/scrolls slow as you move along...it's not a big drama as the directions and measurements of distance before a turn are always spot on...It works...but it's not always pretty&
