How many GPS sattlelite can 612c detect?

Now I consider buying 612C/Asus P750/Touch Cruise

i got my Stellar as a warranty replacement for a Trion, but it arrived as simply the phone, nothing else (e.g case, CD etc). I have tried to get the GPS working, downloaded several bits of software including TomTom taster, GPSGate etc, but the only thing that activates the GPS (i.e. flashes the amber LED) is Google Maps which works perfectly, finds a good number of satellites, generally faultless. I know warranty devices are often "fixed" returned devices, so it could be hardware, but Google working makes me think not. Following the same line of thought, I had a look at the registry and found a key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\GPSOnePort with the comm port set to Com1. Most things seem to look on Com1 or 7 - does anyone know if this is the correct setting? or of course have any other ideas what could be going on.
I did make what in retrospect was probably a mistake in that since I had to switch over quickly I used Sprite to backup my Trion and restore to the Stellar, so I am thinking about a hard reset anyway, just waiting to see if the 6.1 ROM comes out first

I got my Ipaq 614c 3 days a go and I have to say a love it. But I am having a really bad problem that I bought a 4Gb Kingston Micro SDHC card. The phone is recognising the card when I put in but start to use it I can write on just 3 Mb the pda is getting really slow and stop the writing. After that when I stop the process the phone can not see the Micro SDHC card. I have to switch it off and on to recognise the card again.

Have somebody any idea to solve this problem??? I really need help.

I doubt it very much ..... "locking" handsets is merely another revenue stream for them ..... T-Mo would happily unlock the phone for you if you hand over the cash ..... in any case, there are countless websites and mobile phone shops that will be able to do it for you a few months after launch !

I have exactly the same problem. My theory is GPS is still being used by another application (Quick GPS perhaps) even though the Quick GPS download is completed and is not shown in the running programs list. Rebooting the device cures this. I have read somwhere (maybe on this thread) that WM5 & WM6 should allow GPS to be shared shared but wether that means equal strength is anyones guess.

My car has heat reflective windscreen but when its working at its best I still get 4 or 5 bars around the rural midlands but I lose the signal altogether around the M25 and even Heathrow approach roads. So can anyone reccomend an external GPS that I can attach outside the car.

So I have GPS working rather nicely on my i780 now using the following (as per both here and the folks at XDA):
1. PortSplitter
2. TomTom

Here's my problem. Every so often I get TomTom starting up randomly on my i780. I cant really tell why. As far as I can see its secondary to my memory card, but I really have no way to tell. I suppose I could remove the card to find out, but since ths wouldnt be a lonterm option (given I need the memory card for the size of the maps), I thought I would ask if anyone was having the same problem, and/or knew of a solution.

Of course, I should let you know that all of the original install files for the TomTom software are on the memory card that is in my i780. I dont know which ones can be removed, and which ones need to remain for the program to work aside from the maps.

Has anyone tried this on WM5?

ive got a HTC TyTn ii wiith WM6, i downloaded a poker blind timer called poker timer, when i install the CAB file (copyed over to my device not the storage card) and installed from there it starts to install, then a error called CE setup says

"poker timer requires the installation of netcf.core.ppc3.arm.cab for it to run properly. install the CAB file before running this application" i then click ok and it seems like it installed, and it runs ok, i havnt tested every part of the software though. but this is not the first time its asked me for this piece of software, so i thought it was about time i installed it.

so i googled netcf.core.ppc3.arm.cab and it took me to Microsofts own website ot download, i checked it was the latest as it says last update was in 2005? and it seems it is. once downloaded, on my PC and installed, and then ran with my TyTn plugged in it pops up a message on my TyTn asking for permission to installed an unsigned third party software about 7 times, then a screen pops up on my PC saying that its not compatible with my device?!?

so do i need it, and if so how do i install it?

I've had my iPaq 614c a few days now and it is great! One of the few issues I have with the device is the lack of a headphone socket (restricted to using the supplied personal handsfree kit). Anyone know of any mini-USB to 3.5mm Jack convertors that will work with the 614c?

Same here, I've been searching for the solution about a week now but with no luck. Hopefully someone can find out how or HP will come up with new firmware so we can change/disable XT9 completely

Now for a question of my own...

In the Buttons Menu, on the 'Lock' tab, what does the "Enable Keyguard" option do?

I have tried having it Ticked and Un-ticked, and so far do not know what the difference is yet.

Even with it ticked, and with all the buttons disabled when in stand-by, I have still have the device try to dial random numbers if I receive a message or a reminder when it is in my pocket. This will obviously wake up the device, and then all the buttons would be 'live' and so if pressed by accident, would do different things.

What does the "Keyguard" option actually do?

Is there a way to lock the keypad entirely? I have tried this by pressing and holding the 'OK' button on the left edge of the phone, as suggested by some users, but this only disables the touch wheel, and not the buttons.

Any help would be much appreciated, as I would really like all the keys to lock when I turn the phone off, even if a reminder or text message was to wake the phone up, so that no numbers could be dialled by mistake.

I own a 614c for a week now and I think is great. Now I am trying to connect the GPS of 614c to my laptop using bluetooth, do you know if this is possible? I succesfully managed to connect to activesync using bluetooth but I cannot find any info on how to connect the GPS.
Note that I am using Garmin mapSource software on my laptop

Hi All,

Have just received CoPilot v7 with my HP Ipaq 614c and I am having a hell of a time setting up the GPS - I know that there are some settings necessary outside of the CoPilot program, but it is next to impossible to get the 'External GPS' Settings configured correctly.
Has anybody had the same problem with this device?
If anybody is happily using the CoPilot 7 software on their HP Ipag 614c then please share the External GPS settings as I am at my wits end!!

A/GPS:

Just a quick note to confirm that the GPS Can Operate without a SIM present. I used Visual GPS CE with no Sim card in the HP and GPS worked (app setting, serial, port=com6, baud=115200). Note the Visual GPSce app does not not require a data connection (It just gives GPS data, its not a mapping app like the pre-installed google maps).

I have'nt worked how the Assisted part of the GPS reliases it needs to update its Satellite orbital data yet, since there is no popup indicator like on HTC devices(QuickGPS) which lets you know you need to update your orbital data.

Regarding GSM/3G control:

As mentioned else where, the HP does not have any user access to control whether you access the GSM band or 3G/UMTS band. The device effectively manages connecting to GSM or 3G towers itself and will switch on its own accord. There is no band selection tab in the phone settings, I have tried putting registry entries (HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\UMTS OpMode = 1) and (HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting ShowUMTSBandPage =1) with no reponse . Plus I tried Bandswitch (v1.2.3) which did not have an effect niether (Note: The Bandswitch tray icon is no fool-proof symbol of the current band its just an icon if you take the simcard out of the HP, restart and tap on the bandswitch tray icon to change bands the icon will change, even though theres no sim!!!)

I suspect that the "Auto" setting for band control is fixed at the ROM level and therefore find it hard to see it being changed unless HP Ltd release a rom/firmware update with an amendment. So far the only solution to avoid the phone using a 3G/UMTS signal is 1) Get a GSM only SIM 2) Go and live in the countryside 3) Put the phone into Flight mode . I feel the lack of access to user band selection is a currently a slight oversight by HP particularly as it can affect battery life and standyby time, as yet I have not had time to full evaluate the battery life.

Quirks List:
1. Careful of the vanity mirror at the back it could be prone to scuffs/scratches since it is not totally deadflat and recessed like the camera lens.

2. For some reason (from booting the phone from new) I have noticed that the default video file in My Documents\My videos\ called "1-nature_15fps.mp4" does not play any video from that particular file in the default windows media player, it just plays the audio??

3. There is no link to the Calendar or Messages from the start menu when in [Settings > Menus] (you could probably add a shortcut yourself using a file explorer).

4. The HP has 4 Separate side Hardware buttons (camera,vibrate,OK,voice comm), only 3 side Hardware buttons (Camera,OK,voice comm) have options for remapping buttons in [Settings > Buttons] with the Voice comm having an additional option for Hold&Press (used for record). The side OK button also has a Hold&Press function which is not user remappable since it's used for switching off the Smart Wheel.

5. "The recieve all incoming beams" option in [Settings > connections] is enabled by default, so if you want to save batterylife remember to untick the tick box.

Reado, this is a situation that many have encountered. There are a number of threads on Brighthand and Mobilitysite that you can read. However, I would recommend you look at http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=243731 for Chrismrulz's Bootloader tool. With this you will be able to recover your 4700 from any failed ROM flash. Works great. In fact I use it now for flashing my 4700 with the kozhura ROMS (would also highly recommend these to you over the HP version. I can almost guarantee you will not like the HP ROMs.

Last question:
I know that oddly enough it doesn't have a front-facing camera for video calls (since any other 3G phone has it, and most probably you could use it sooner or later with some kind of VOIP software like Skype, without paying so much using the 3G network speeds).
Is it possible though that if someone initiates a video call to you, that you can see them on your screen, even though they won't be able to see you? I mean the phone has this 3G capability, so it could be done with 3rd party software (something like HTC's Video dialer), if it's own dialer doesn't support it not even for anwering?

The reason I asked about the manual is that because I haven't got the phone yet and I would like to read it before I actually do. Doing that saves me from a lot of questions that I would normally ask in a forum like this. It also gives me some idea of the "extra" software included in the ROM (like Asus's excellent Travelog in the P750)
Fantastic to hear about the Buttonlock. I find it very usefull.
Bluetooth problems: I read in a couple of forums about noise when using bluetooth headset for making calls. If you have actually got this phone and you don't experience any of this, I am glad to hear it.
Sad to hear that the "pink shine" is due to bad hardware (which you give a logical explanation IMHO), but for me it's not so important.

Is it possible that any of you lucky owners could be kind enough to upload the manual if it's not too large file size, or give me any link to it if you have found it somewhere that I wasn't able to?

Thanks guys for all the usefull info.
After having owened a handfull of WM devices (currently Asus P526), I am going to get this beutifull "toy". I chose it over the Asus P750 mainly due to it's larger screen (fed up trying to navigate with 2.6"), and the larger ROM-RAM (also fed up of the "out of memory" error). Also on the plus points is the USB 2.0 speed.
I am sure that the bluetooth and camera "problems" will be sorted out with some ROM upgrade from HP.
One thing I'll miss from Asus, it's the hardware button for locking the device's screen and ALL keys, which come alive when you receive a call.
Any ideas where I can download the 614c manual? I've searched all over hp UK, with no success.

Did you try record telephone talks by it soft? Does interest - your speech is record only or interlocutor also?

Camera - This was something I was really interested in, there are currently mixed views on the web on the cameras quality. first off it's 3mp autofocus with limit to about 10cm regarding getting up close to a subject. The camera software is by arcsoft, then GUI is not optimised for thumbs, really more of a stylus affair. The icons are really tiny. The usual settings are there quality, size, contrast, brightness,sharpness, effect, saturation etc...

The first few shots I started taking with it i noticed a pink tint running diagonally on the photo/screen after fiddling about with saturation (-0.5) I managed to reduce this tint which was not a white balance issue. My concusion is this tint which is not uniform may be a slight imperfection with the UV coating applied to the lens on the camera and possibly the saturation control can amplify or deamplify any imperfection or possibly a heat issue since i did notice the hp getting slight warm . Take a look at the photos on my flickr page for the example. I could get the unit exchanged but, i not too sure wether this could just be a sign of the massed produced camera harware and i might get something even worse. so far I have reduced the effect, as long as it can take reasonable snap shot photos then Im not expecting anything else and would be happy with that.

Speed wise, if you half press the shutter button it locks on and focuses then full press to take the photo with about a 1 second delay. quality wise (negating tint) seems reasonable, obviously when taking photos you need good light and a steady hand, theres a small led light on the back and a vanity mirror too. Note all the photos were handheld with no timer, any wonkyness will be down to hand shake and the white balance can vary due to being on the auto setting.

I will look into a fix for the phone band issue this week and investigate that photo tint issue a bit further too.
