Some work and some don't out of the box. My Blackjack II refused to work until I installed the GPSID. However did you try installing the GPSActivation patch in addition to the GPSID? Just a heads up though if you installed Paul's GPSActivator patch before the GPSID app the Blackjack II won't work unless you either hard reset the device or change the registry setting at Key name:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\SamsungGPSHardware

modify the Value name "Interface Type" value data from COMM to PHONE

My GPS software worked fine after this. GPStest is a great tool to see whether or not your Blackjack GPS is sending signals.

This is good news, I almost gave up on them. Keep us posted pPCp.

This test version I am running is using the Microsoft GPSID feature. I don't have the MoDaCo GPSactivation patch from Paul because if installed it breaks the GPSID app. So for my phone it was necessary to unlock it to install CoPilot. I unlocked it using the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab then installed the MS GPSID app that Paul kindly extracted for us from the SDK. I set the Program port at COM4 and enabled the Manage Automatically field. I verified that the GPS receiver was functioning using GPStest. Then I installed CoPilot and basically ignored the GPS setup prompt and the software just immediately started getting the GPS signals and away I went. S W E E T rolleyes.gif

I'll ask how long it will be before it becomes available to the existing CoPilot owners and I will post it here.
UPDATE: it will be a little while but I don't know exactly what that means in terms of an exact time frame. sad.gif The developers have the issue resolved now by getting it to work with GPSID but now they are reworking the user interface to accommodate it. Of course then they need to figure out how to get it out in the next release and as well as out to get it out to existing owners that want this functionality. And as I would suspect there is more than just this one item being worked at being incorporated in the next release and update so it all adds up to time. So the bottom line is good things are coming. More than likely this patched update would be via Tech Support whenever they decide to release it.

As a side note I started running Garmin Mobile XT a lot more for side by side comparison and I have to start taking back some of the remarks I said earlier about it being slow. It isn't as bad as it was before. I must have had some bad apps running at the time because since I have hard reset and started over the Garmin Mobile has been running very acceptable in terms of its speed. It really isn't an issue like it was before. So I would say it's performance is actually usable now. It still is a little slower in performance than CoPilot but not enough to bug me like before.

Just a follow up for all you CoPilot users...

ALK is certainly not giving up on working out the Blackjack issues with having CoPilot Live v7 run. I got an early version that I was lucky enough to get my hands on so that I could help them test and give feedback with. So it isn't quite ready for release yet but it is most certainly working on mine as you can plainly see. biggrin.gif

If any of you make it to CTIA next week in Las Vegas come by the MS Windows Mobile device counter and I will give you a look see.

I have VoiceCommand working great from the phone itself and my JawBone bluetooth headset. When I first loaded it I thought it wasn't working but I didn't realize that the volume was all the way down on my BK2. doh...

Interesting side note about the Microsoft link posted above... under the product specific support it says this about the Samsung BlackJack from Cingular yet we can get it working on the Blackjack II.

" Samsung BlackJack from Cingular
Voice Command 1.6 bluetooth functionality does not work properly on the Samsung Blackjack. It is not possible to initiate a voice command interaction using the headset, and it is not possible to receive audio announcements through the headset on this device.

I can't figure out how to get around the scenario when I have to use the number keys to spell a name into employee's corporate phone system. (Instead of a receptionist, the PBX asks you to type in the employee's name.) You can't use the qwerty keyboard, the PBX is listening for the tones for the 3 letters on top of each key in a numberpad (8 is for T, U, and V). But the BJ II doesn't have the letters above the numbers to give you a clue as to which one to push...?

Maybe AlphaDial will work for you... its free to try here

On your PC you would edit word and excel documents with Word and Excel. You can edit the native files of theses word and excel documents on a Windows Mobile device as well starting with ver 5 using Microsoft Office Mobile. A Windows Mobile device uses Outlook on your PC to do all your editing of the Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile data Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, etc. ActiveSync is the application that provides the software link to synchronize the data from the Windows Mobile device to your PC. Read more on Windows Mobile here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/software/default.mspx

You still need to make a determination of what carrier you want to use. Go to that carriers local retail outlet or online links to see your selection of Windows Mobile devices. If you want an unlocked non-carrier specific brand you might try a site like expansys and browse through the Windows Mobile smartphone selection http://www.expansys-usa.com/c.aspx?t=cat&f=84 There is a lot of form factor selection you need to consider. Do you want an exposed qwerty or one that hides?

Browse here at the MoDaCo site under the various specific hardware forums and you will get a feel for what people are happy with. I currently use a non-touch screen model called the Blackjack II which I am happy with because it was important to me to have GPS.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Hi everyone,
want to say Hi to all of you and thank you for your posts. I just moved to WM6 yesterday and I was al little dissapointed at how UNfriendly it seems after using Palm for almost 10 years. NOW I am looking for software to track my diabetes log book and all the software I find online is not written for WM6! and will not install so for now I'm stuck using Excel. Do any of you have any Ideas ...Suggestions.. or Hacks.. to make older software work?

Thanks ...Jim

It is unfriendly only because you haven't unlearned how you used the Palm interface. Think how you use your PC and it will be a little more intuitive hopefully. There is so much software out there for Windows Mobile that I am sure with just a little searching you will find one that suits you. For starters I did a simple Google search and found a couple that might you suit you fine. However the first one I read about I thought you might find the best...

SiDiary is a free Pocket PC program for managing and analyzing your diabetes data. You can track your blood glucose levels, carbs, insulin, pills ketones, blood pressure, notes etc. for the whole day on just a single screen. It suggests a bolus dose for your individual coefficients and gives graphical feedback (pie chart, line chart etc.) and several statistic parameters (highest, lowest, average, A1C etc.).

It even has a cool feature for high risk patients so that it will send SMS messages automatically for every critical level tracked with the software.
http://www.sidiary.org/diabetes-smartphone...asp?IDSprache=2

I think you will find your switch to Windows Mobile from Palm very beneficial.

Pocket PC Techs have been around since the very beginning and have a great product line. Instead of an extra battery I carry an external portable charger that allows me to recharge my phone on the fly. Plus it recharges any of my other USB accessories like the Zune, iPod, GPS, etc.
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~Sam...m~LSP-MPP01.htm

Here is the one you are looking for Lil Sync USB Mobile Power Pack
Specifications:

Input (Mini USB) : 5VDC, 500mA Min.
Output (USB Type A Port) : 5VDC, 1000mA
Battery Chemistry: Li-ION
Battery Capacity: 4400mAh
Net Weight: 4.3 oz
Dimensions: 2.75" L x 2.10" W x .86" H

If you are looking for an even larger capacity you can get one made by Socket Communications but it will be over $100. http://www.socketmobile.com/products/acces...=Specifications This one has a super large capacity of 7,200 mAH for very long time use but of course it is slightly larger and heavier.

check your time zone in your phone... rarely is the default to the phone correct.

If you ActiveSync with a PC verify that your PC time zone is correct also or ActiveSync with change it again on you to your PC setting.

The issue isn't with Activesync. The problem is your pc.

Check the time zone on you PC on the desktop that it conicides with the phone... ActiveSync isn't smart enough to do anything more than take the clock on the PC and set to the phone. It seems to me the time zone on your PC is off by the hour you are seeing.

...So is this Military noise cancelling technology really "all that?" And the fancy little jaw-vibration receiver button thing that helps people here you...?

I use a JawBone and it really REALLY works better than the other so-called noise cancellation headsets that I have had. I travel through airports and it use to be that whoever I was talking to could hear the airport background announcements which would greatly interfere with my own voice speaking to them... not anymore. I have tested it in other very noisy enviroments like on the floor of a conference exhibit hall and it works flawlessly. I don't have a convertible auto to test it with though...

Jackpot

So here is what I recommend to anyone new that asks. Load the Microsoft GPSID and not the MoDaCo patch. Paul was "forced" into making the MoDaCo GPSactivator patch because the GPSID wasn't available at the time so most people were using it first. The GPSID works just great for me IF you haven't loaded the other patch. If you did load the patch then you need to do the registry edit to fix it. Also it seems for those with newer phones don't even need the GPSID but I needed it mine to assign a port to allow the apps to start running.

there are hundreds of Windows Mobile devices out there to choose from that meet that unlike say an iPhone... here is what I would recommend. Narrow your selection down by only which wireless carrier's you would consider using first like who has the best coverage at the places you most likely use your phone such as home, office, etc.

My friends got a great phone only to find out that Verizon had extremely spotty coverage at their home. They ended up switching to AT&T and the same kind of problem. It turns out T-Mobile worked great for them.

Do you have an existing contract that runs out soon? Are you willing to get a used phone?

I would love to get the equivalent of Google Desktop speed and function on my Windows Mobile smartphone. An app that can be super-fast in searching within files, contacts, calendar, etc for user defined text strings. Basically I am trying to find an app that works as fast as it does on the Palm PDA's for searching within data.

The closest thing that I can find is SmartphoneFind http://www.syncdata.it/sphfind.html but it is S_L_O_W for me. I like the features of SmartphoneFind but it just takes a little long.

Anybody got an application to recommend?

I agree with you... I want this to speed up dramatically or it is practically useless.

I found a registry settings that has "wheel" in it and appears to adjust the sensitivity. But I haven't figured out exactly how to set it to where it stays put.

HKLM\Software\Samsung\KeyRun value name=WheelSpeed Value=1

The first time I changed it to a 10 the cursor jumped briskly when I was testing it but then it seems to revert back to slower speed again. sad.gif

I will play with it some more and see if anything good comes out of it.

I read around some about the BlackJack 2 which I just bought.
1) People mention hacking the gps, does this mean I can use the phone as a GPS for free?
2) Is there a consensus on a good data only message program?
3) How about getting youtube to work?
4) Is there alot of websites that don't work on the phone?
I think thats it for now.

Congrats on the new phone and your first post. I am just ahead of you. wink.gif
1 - yes; it means you can access the gps receiver that comes internally so that applications other than the one that AT&T wants to charge you monthly for. To get serious about gps you will want to buy a software package anyway but you can try things for free like Google Maps or Windows Live Search if you have data service.
2 - not sure what you are asking
3 - yes it will with a little modification
4 - well heavy flash websites and silverlight seem to be an issue for me as well as the older frame style websites. Fortunately a lot of the more popular sites have mobile versions

You can get started here http://www.modaco.com/content/Samsung-i617...Thread-of-Tips/ to begin answering alot of your questions.

If you have Resco file explorer on your phone it finds stuff like that no matter where it might be hidden. In this case it was a snap.

If you don't use any applications from resco.net yet you will. http://www.resco.net/smartphone/default.asp They have one you are looking for called Audio Recorder that does more than just record your phone calls.

I would recommend you do what I did which is to get the Resco Media SmartPack. The Explorer 2007 is awesome and includes a great registry editor for making enabling these tips and tricks.

To be honest, I don't really understand why you guys are bothering to get CoPilot Live to work on the BJ2. I bought CoPilot Live 6 for my BJ1 and it was a pretty bad GPS program. It misled me to so many locations it was ridiculous. The interface and map design is very outdated. The voice directions are not frequent enough or accurate enough. I've been using Garmin Mobile XT on my BJ2 now, and it is night and day. It works great, has only misled me once in numerous trips, has great looking maps with excellent functionality (e.g. great zooming, map tilting, turn arrows, etc.), has far superior voice directions, and best of all, works great with the GPS intermediate driver. Gamin is worth buying while CoPilot is not worth using even for free IMHO. mellow.gif

Sorry to hear you have had so many issues. I haven't had anywhere near the kind of experience you are having. In the years I have been using it and I have used it all around the USA and in Barcelona it has been really very good in routing me. I believe I have been misled maybe once but it has been so infrequent I can't even remember the last time it occurred.

Whereas with the Garmin Mobile which I am using on the BJ2 right now is ridiculously slow in updating the screen with where I am. I literally will be seconds past a point on the map before the arrow shows me where I am so I have to get use to turning earlier compared to the performance of the coPilot program. CoPilot will work with the bluetooth GPS it came with but I don't want to be lugging that around if I don't have to. As far as features of the Garmin I must say I really like several things it does like custom POI for things like all the red-light cameras in the city I get warned about before I get to the intersection, Max speed (I love having that on a plane trip), Not sure why you think the voice is better or the maps because I haven't had any issues with that.

Ahhh thanks, I read this a few hours too late. My GPS was working fine with the MoDaCo unlocker.... but being full of curiosity, I installed the old Microsoft patch also, resulting in malfunciton/lockup. Crap.. So I just backed everything up and did a factory reformat. Lesson learned

Lots of people reporting this problem where it use to work and now nothing... well me too! ohmy.gif I had GPSActivation loaded and most things worked until I installed GPSID which "broke" it. They just aren't compatible together. I personally like the GPSID better than the MoDaCo version because of its flexibility but if you have previously loaded MoDaco then that is where the problem starts.

This helped me to fix it on my BJ2 so I didn't have to hard reset. I thought there was nothing to lose since I was prepared to do a hard reset to get it back. I changed a registry key so if you are comfortable doing that kind of thing here you go; use a registry editor and go to Key name:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\SamsungGPSHardware

modify the Value name "Interface Type" value data from COMM to PHONE

I rebooted after making the change just to be safe although I wasn't sure if I needed to or not. Well after waiting for the longest 60 seconds of my life GPSTest, Google Maps, MS Live Search all started working again. Remember to change all the options on your apps back to the way it was before you loaded the GPSID.... I hope it helps somebody else from not having to hard reset. Good luck!

arturk... Don't give up on ALK. I too am a long time fan of CoPilot and CoPilot Live is too good a product not to hang in there. I have also recently contacted ALK so hopefully something is happening.

I hard reset my BJ2 and didn't use Paul's patch but instead the Microsoft GPSID app which is a lot more flexible and allows for selecting the ports and baud rate.

Right now Microsoft Live Search, Google Maps, and GPStest by Chartcross run perfectly and CoPilot gives out the GPS Failed message. I sure hope the ALK developers can figure this one out quickly.

I know I can get my Garmin Mobile XT to work on the BJ2 but it is way too slow in updating the screen that it frustrates the heck out of me.

I was digging through some old posts over at blackjackusers and came across this link (http://www.cellphoneshop.net/auvimucafors.html) for an audio/video cable for the first blackjack. I immediately was interested because this would expand the phone's usage to so much more, playing roms and watching movies, giving presentations without a pc, etc...

I suspect that there must be something keeping our phones from doing this or there would already be such a product on the market. Anyways what the hell... Does anyone know if the i617 has these same capabilities? Thanks

edit: after reading more, I realized that the cable actually doesn't work for the i607. So I assume these phones do not support video out through the usb. Anyways, if anybody knows I could get my phone to play on a television (seems far fetched to me now sad.gif ...) please share.

Well this isn't a perfect solution but this one is wireless and works for things like PowerPoint. It is called a ShowMate. http://www.impatica.com/showmate/ Basically it uses bluetooth for wireless connection to a projector or whatever has a VGA connection if your TV is equipped with it.

The other solution is wired called Pocket Controller Pro. http://www.soti.net/default.asp?Cmd=Produc...mp;SubCmd=PCPro and you have to connect this in to your PC which could in turn use its VGA output to a projector; TV etc. This really works very well is is much more versatile than ShowMate but it is wired and it needs your laptop or PC.

Of course there are existing Windows Mobile phone devices with output capabilities built in that don't need the above at all. The HTC Advantage for example has VGA output but that one is large. The imate Ultimate 6150 or 8150 has XGA 1024x768 pixel output built in and these model look absolutely stunning when displaying to a projector or large screen. I saw this at World Mobile Congress 2008 being used in conjunction with Remote Desktop Mobile so that the phone actually was controlling a Windows XP PC remotely directly from the phone but with a desktop XGA experience. The imate Ultimate 8502, 9502 have built in VGA output using RCA connectors which I thought was acceptable but I preferred these latter models because of built in GPS.
