I've just called Orange and I was told the £2 amount is "only for Orange World access", which is completely different from what I was told before. It's also completely usless, who on earth bothers with Orange World and the like? I asked for a £7 refund, which they wouldn't give but they did give me 90 minutes of free call time. So overall it was worth calling. I'm not convinced I was given the correct information, other than I was charged way more than £2 of course. Under the Racoon package it clearly states: "Maximum daily charge for mobile Internet browsing: £2" She said she'd pass it along to the Web designers to change this. There is absolutely nothing mentioned about only being of use on the Orange World website. If I'd known I would activated an Orange Extras package. Or for occasional use Orange PAYG at £1 per day. What extra is this? I can only find: Unlimited Orange World browsing - 1 day - £1 - Text WORLD 1 4MB of access to Orange World - 1 month - £4 - Text WORLD 4 Both seem to imply they're for "Orange World" access. I used to be able to pay £4 for 4Mb for one month but it wasn't just Orange World, it covered data traffic in general. I can no longer find that extra. I used it fairly often. |

Thanks. So it just means "use data connection", got it. I searched on Google but found nothing conclusive. |

I understand for GPRS on a Mobile via Bluetooth/USB I need to use *99# as the Dial-up number. * What is the 3G equivalent or is it also *99#? * Will the Mobile use 3G first then GPRS automatically? Thanks |

Thanks Metoo. I followed those instructions and it worked a treat. I tested it with speedtest.net and got: Down - 34Kbps Up - 12Kbps So slow Dial-up, this is using GPRS. My flat does have poor signal too. It's bloody expensive though. 10 minutes cost me a whopping £9. One to use in emergencies! The USBModem_Dialer.exe util needs to be Run as Administrator on Vista. Unlike 2000/XP Vista has a driver on Windows Update, however this seemed inferior (less options) to the one supplied in the link above, so I used that one instead. Interestingly the Orange APN was automatically added as an extra Initialisation string and a DUN Connection was already created. So it turns out I don't need to use the USBModem_Dialer.exe util. Oddly (even with Bluetooth enabled) I could only choose from USB or Infrared in the "Modem Link" settings on my C500 Mobile, there's not much point buying a Bluetooth Dongle. I'll stick with USB. |

Thanks Awarner. Too true. I only plan to do it very occasionally and when I have a crucial e-mail to send/receive. I won't be using it much at all until I get a 3G phone too. I'm waiting for Windows Mobile 7 to be released before getting that. |

Look for devices which have "Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR" (not just Bluetooth 2.0). EDR is Extended Data Rate which gives much improved bandwidth for modem use and audio streaming etc. Obviously you'll need that to be supported at both ends of the link. Interesting. I presume the HTC Diamond and Pro have this? Does this give the same speed as USB 2.0? I'll give the Internet thing ago tonight, thanks. |

Thanks Metoo. That's just the ticket. I'll check my phone for that option. It's surprised ActiveSync doesn't provide such a function. I guess it's not needed. I'd prefer to use a USB cable due to the extra bandwidth it gives over Bluetooth. With GPRS you probably wouldn't see any difference but with 3G it's significantly reduced over Bluetooth. Which is slightly a moot point, with my C500 GRPS Only Smartphone but even so. |

It's dead simple to use Pass-through so you can use your PC's Broadband on a Windows Mobile Hand Held but what about the other way round? How can I use my Mobiles GPRS or 3G reception on a computer without Internet access? I cannot see any option in ActiveSync/WMDC. I've seen this done on a Nokia phone and was wondering if it's possible with a Windows Mobile Hand Held? I have an Orange C500 (Windows Mobile 2003 SE), if that helps. Thanks. |

I have Rules set up in Outlook 2007 to sort the IMAP inbox into the same personal folder tree I was using pre-IMAP when I still used pop3. This tree then syncs via ActiveSync from the original pst file. Hi. That is a good idea actually, accept it won't delete e-mails from Personal Folders, when you delete them from IMAP Alternatively, set up the WM device to go fetch the IMAP mail directly, either via GSM or passthru internet when you connect to ActiveSync. I'm currently doing that but it's not automatic. I have to click Send/Receive and despite WM2003SE subscribing to folders you can only download mail in the Inbox |

I don't think it's possible It would be so hard if MS allowed you to pick which PST file to use. I've had to configure a separate IMAP account on Smartphone and use Pass-through but of course this isn't Automatic and my phone no longer vibrates when a message comes in |

I am using Vista HP SP1 and Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 (WMDC). I use Outlook 2007 and up until recently I used POP3 which put e-mail in Personal Folders and all was good. I now use IMAP and this puts mail in an entirely different PST file, nothing to do with Personal Folders. The trouble is WMDC (and I bet ActiveSync on 2000/XP too) doesn't let you choose which PST when setting up a Partnership and only points to Personal Folders. Making it effectively not compatible with IMAP. I know I could setup my phone (currently an Orange SPV C500/WM 2003 SE) so it accesses my IMAP mail directly but this requires an Internet connection or Pass-through. Both wouldn't sync the mail automatically to my phone like Synchronisation does. It seems really stupid to not support IMAP. Am I missing something? Is there any way around this? Thanks p.s - Checking Google the problem also seems to affect ActiveSync as far as back 2005: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?Forum...mp;TopicId=5953 http://www.modaco.com/content/smartphone-g...folder-with-as/ |

Thanks Dark Horse. The weight is a concern. The Samsung looks nice but it has no numeric keypad. To me that's crucial. I'm not a fan of touch screen phones. |

Just to add to this, I'd go for the older S710 if you don't need 3G, I found the keyboard was easier to use and the phone less chunky to hold and put in your pocket althought the dimensions are similar. Thanks for the reply. I definitely want 3G. It's one of the main reasons I want a new phone. My C500 is "pretty much" already all I need but the web access is so slow being GPRS based I barely ever use it. I used a mate's 3G phone and the web flew along. Why do you say say the S710 is less chunky? They look to be virtually the same. Isn't the S730 lighter? Thanks. |

Thanks again. That's good to hear about the battery being better than the E200. It sounds like it's fine. £150 is a good price. I'd buy it without SIM as I'm a PAYG user. Are O2 giving it a new name or just calling it S730? Thanks. |

4: Thankfully yes if you only make voice calls. Data / 3g video calling eats it up quite quickly. Thanks Mysterious Stranger for your reply, it's appreciated. I presume when you say Data/3G usage runs the battery down quicker I presume you don't mean to SPV E200 levels? The E200's battery really sucked. If you used Data all day would the battery be likely dead? What about if you only use it for say 30 mins a day? Most of the time I'll only make phone calls so am pleased the battery lasts as long as the C500 but would use Data/3G too. On the C500 I don't notice battery is effected when using Data but that is only GPRS though. Thanks again. p.s - Thanks for pics, it only looks a bit wider. I guess I need to hold one to see if the weight is an issue. What do Orange call the S730? I know they called the S710 the SPV E650. I can then ask to see one in their shop. |

Thanks Shadow. It seems that the size is virtually the same, so not worth worrying about but the weight maybe an issue, still as the S730 is much newer it maybe worth living with. I was more concerned about the size than weight. |

I currently own the SPV C500 and have been considering the S730 but am wary of it's size & weight. I have a few questions please: 1. I presume the S730 is the latest HTC Smartphone with a Qwerty keyboard? 2. How much bigger is the S730 to the SPV C500? 3. How much more does the S730 weigh to the SPV C500? 4. Is the battery life comparable to the SPV C500? I've looked up online the last three questions but I'd like to hear some "real world" answers, as looking at a bunch of measurements and weights never gives me a "true" reflection of a product. Regarding the size: I wouldn't want the S730 if for example it was the same size as the SPV E200. It needs to comfortably fit in a jeans pocket with wallet. Thanks |

You guys don't actually play your ringtones from entire songs? That's madness. I used Goldwave (www.Goldwave.com) to open a WAVE file and chop out the parts I didn't want. I'm left with a 30 second clip (from BEP's Where is the Love). I then saved it out as a WMA file. This is why I also don't get why people want to play ringtones from their SD Card. The person would've long since hung up before the song was over anyway. QUOTE(patp @ Jul 15 2005, 11:42) BTW, anyone who wants to fit the maximum amount of music onto their C500 should be using OGG with the aoTuv tunig and quality setting -1. Betaplayer handles these files well and the compression/quality is amazing. I'm averaging about 1MB per song. When I get round to buying a 1GB card that will mean around 1000 songs! How do they sound compared with 128Kbps MP3? But surely even with an improved OGG codec (AOTUV) you're still zapping almost all the quality of the original file out of it. Compression number 1 is only 50Kbps. That's vastly lower than the recommended 128Kbps for MP3 or even 96Kbps of WMA files. It's no wonder each song is only 1Mb there isn't anything left. QUOTE(patp @ Jul 15 2005, 11:42) The WMP10 sync process limits the options for compressing and even the lowest setting gives larger files sizes than I was used to, plus they stuttered when playing. That's surely WMP10 on the PC at fault, not WMP10 on the SmartPhone. QUOTE(Abecedarian @ Jul 16 2005, 18:36) w.r.t. WRT? QUOTE(Abecedarian @ Jul 16 2005, 18:36) On a side note, does anybody now if TCPMP is able to play WMP now? I take it you mean WMV? It's always been able to I'm sure. Thanks btw QUOTE(RT87 @ Jul 16 2005, 20:08) -> More Symbols What do you mean? QUOTE(RT87 @ Jul 16 2005, 20:08) -> WMP10 (very nice that I can now play particular artists music) Why couldn't you before? Does it now support more file formats? What's actually improved with WMP10? I'm guessing not a lot. |
