GPS itself works without data.... but both the programs you listed require data to download maps and info. |

Missed the live coverage due to schedule....but read back and watched the vids/pics. BEAUTIFUL device and VERY tempting. Smaller than I thought. Looks like the perfect PPC size for me. No keyboard necessary. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the fact that the UI, like the Touch, is limited to TouchFlo apps for the most part. Really want the experience to continue thru the rest of the on board apps. At least the rotation of screen orientation when the device is held sideways. Almost seems like an oversight. Or did I not read through enough? May have to wait for 7.0 for the full experience....but this is very very very close to where I want it to be! (which is the best parts of the iPhone mixed with the best of WM!) |

Great Podcast. Laughed out loud when Mono mentioned his device tightly pressing against his leg in his pants! Diamond is definitely on my future device list. Cant wait til the 6th then the final release date. Not needing a physical keyboard....as long as they have a good iPhone-like virtual keyboard onboard. Good Job! |

Liking where this is going. My iPhone life has been short and coming to an end (after June update). Maybe I should finally install windows on my mac and continue my WMDev Training! Paul and Mono were giving away copies of VS2005 in past Podcasts...should give them a listen to see if they do it again! Anywho....all exciting developments. |

Nice! Glad to see this become reality! Phase One Complete! Phase Two....Developers get on board! I use AppFresh as well on my mac and think it's great! AppFresh also sends data back to osx.iusethis.com and counts how many users use each app...so you could see whats popular just based on current usage. Number of Downloads is nice, but if people are like me, most apps get downloaded, tried and uninstalled. This could show how many people actively use an app. Valuable info for someone I'm sure. First thought after seeing screenshot was that AppToDate needs an artist's touch. then I read you're already looking into that. (I like pretty apps!) Nice work! Keep it up! (to date!) |

I am unsubscribing to this thread after I answer this AGAIN! I was trying to be nice and do my job as a moderator...but really! You need to read thru the threads on this forum to get the answers sometimes. Actually...the answers to this one were in the first two posts! BJ2 users...set to com4 Q9h users, set to COM1 or COM3. Not Q9c...Not any other Moto Smartphone....just the Q9h (The only one as of today with built in GPS) Additionally....On the Q9H there is a reg key... HKLM\Services\LCAService Change DisplayIcon from 0 to 1 and restart your phone. There will be a nice little GPS icon in your icon bar that has the following indicators: GPS = GPS off Flashing ))) alternating [check] = GPS Active Flashing ))) alternating [x] = Acquiring Fix Restart your phone. Q9h users...set all GPS programs to use COM3 BJ2 Users (not BJ1 as it doesnt have GPS)...set your GPS programs to use COM4. BJ2 users can NOT add the GPS icon regedit as the required files and registry keys are not available on your phone. Be patient as the GPS in both phones SUCKS! and take a long time to get the first satellite connections. Lastly...when the application using GPS is closed (not just in the background but CLOSED) GPS is disconnected. If you use the wrong com port...the GPS connection WILL NOT CLOSE and your battery will drain QUICKLY. Thats it. No secrects here...it's all in black and white! (or blue on this page!) |

There are different levels of understanding. Though it gets frustrating, Please don't criticize others for not knowing how to do things on their phones. The regedit that activates the GPS status in the icon bar only works on the Q because the required dlls and registry entries are not on other phones. Could be possible to install them onto other phones....but you'd need to get everything in the right place. Maybe someone with both phones could figure it out...but dont post the files here as it's illegal and not allowed on the forums here. To answer other questions.... - You do not need to install the GPS cab now that the GPSID program has been posted. - To install a cab file....connect your phone to the pc, click on explore in activesync, place the cab on the phone where you could navigate to it (like the storage card)....navigate to it on the phone and click on it to install. - If you are using the COM ports listed above for your specific phone....you do not need to turn off GPS. It does it by itself when you close the app using it. (EXIT the app...not just switch to another app) |

Very cool Chucky. I'm WM phone-less at the moment or I'd give it a try. Let's get some beta testers on this as it's a great idea for an app and something I wished for MANY times. Multiple lists within the built in tasks app! Could make a shopping list task, home repairs task! very cool Got a screenshot? |

as I said before I believe both platforms are great depending on your preferences and needs. But I will comment on a couple of points: 1) Price isnt that bad compared to prices of phones from HTC when they first come out. I would think most people here buy non-subsidized phones as soon as they come out. I have paid MORE for PPCs than I have paid for my iPhone. And I usually wind up paying that price every 3 or 4 months to get the next phone. (I always sell my previous phone to help with this habit). 2) iPhone upgrades have been great and steady. I wish MS or HTC would put updates out as quickly as Apple. 3) Why complain about the 16GB version released soon after the 8GB? How many times does HTC do that....EVERY TIME! 3 or 4 months after I bought my Touch, the came out with the enhanced touch....then soon after the Touch Dual. You can never catch up with HTC. Soon after you get settled with one device....they introduce a new one. 4) You need to pay for Touch Updates because that is the only stream of income for that device after it's purchased. 5) I've never understood why people complain about the $100 price reduction. They are passing on their success with the phone to the consumer and because of the timing offered rebates for people who purchased recently. Isnt that a good thing? Plus with most carriers, you have 15 to 30 days to return anyway. Damn,,,I know I had one BIG point...but I forget what it was! (It was really going to wow everyone and put this in perspective!) DAMN! |

I switched but I only see it as temporary. I switch phones every few months (addicted) and I'm not ruling returning to WindowsMobile out at all. But if I do switch to something else from the iPhone...It better be a really great device. My Windows Mobile needs have evolved. I used to pack it with EVERY app I possibly could. Installing and trying every app that came along spending hours of time a day playing with my phone, and then talking about it here online. But I have later minimized my applications list and use i as an all around communication device...phone, email, sms, RSS, IM, and the ocassional MMS....Relying on the web browser for many many things these days. There are lots of things missing from the iPhone (Like Exchange)...but lots of new features are coming soon or will eventually. And noting my usage...it works perfectly for me. The user experience is great to say the least....beautiful in most areas, while falling a tiny bit short in others. I, like others, really want Video recording, Flash, Copy/Paste, 3G, etc. But I can wait. I really love WindowsMobile, and cant wait for them to catch up with UI glamour and a bit more consumer focused features as opposed to enterprise. But on topic... Cudos to MS for licensing the competitor. They don't seem to mind doing that these days. I'm sure they're getting a good buck for it. And great job to Apple for the constant iPhone updates based on their actually listening to consumers. MS could learn something from that. |

I'm saying it's not possible. I'll also say that I agree with Monolithix. And finally I'll say that you're a rude person. You are also reading a press release dated 2003...for a planned 2004 device. I'm not even sure the device was finalized with those planned specifications. I just dont know. I could research it for you...but I figured I'd answer from what I do know....no, it's not possible. Ask a question. Get an answer. If it was able to be done...it would have been done already...or at least mentioned here on Modaco that it were possible already. |
