When i unlock the device the screen is black and i can`t do anything to chage the brightness of the phone. when locked screen is normal ... help ...tried soft reset but i don`t want to do hard reset if You could send some ideas about solving this problem i will be grateful. Definately some application is causing this. For me it was Phonealarm - I had to leave backlight settings via phonealarm as "Leave Unchanged" Matt |

Hi, Also went from a Hermes to this phone and havent looked back. OK so the screen is a little smaller but for me having a permanent keyboard instead of having to keep sliding the phone up and down is better usability. Matt |

Hi, I am about to get a i780, Orange branded. From my research I have a few questions and i do not know if SIM-free is a better (and far more expensive) choice. First of all, I will put aside the fact that the Orange branded i780 is a lot uglier than the unbranded 1. Is the GPS working out of the box (at least with Garmin XT and Google Maps) ? Or is it locked? 2. Has Orange removed any of the original Samsung software/skins/today screens? The Orange default today screen is totally ugly and useless IMHO. 3. Is the Orange ROM slower/buggier than the vanilla one? Is it worth it to flash it with the English ROM that can be found elsewhere? 4. Are there any other restrictions/differences on the Orange branded version? Thanks in advance Hi, Other people may know more , but my i780: 1 GPS works with google maps. I dont know about Garmin, however I have just purchased the latest version of Route 66 Mobile 8 that specifically mentions the i780 as being compatible so will wait and see. I have got the old version of Route 66 working but via gpsgate. 2. Orange today is still there but can be disable and there are 3 samsung "Themes" but not any other today screens like Orange (where there are modules to customise etc) 3/4 Dont know sorry. Matt |

Everyone Bashes Orange on these forums, but i still stick by them, and they seem to be providing me with decent enough plans. I go through retentions each time i come up for renewal, and always get the phone i want. They talk me through my bills and usage and provide me with a plan Currently with Orange, I have an HTC TYTN II on a custom plan I negotiated at upgrade time through retentions. (I have a 10% loyalty discount on my account too) I pay £30.64 for my plan + 5 quid on insurance. In that plan i get: ------------------------------------- 1000 anytime cross network minutes 250 Text messages ------------------------------------- +10Mb of data per day for and extra £6.81 a month +£1.28 for itemised billing (?) So that works out as under £44 before VAT How does this stack up against other plans available on other networks. Yeah, for me going through to Orange retentions seems the best option For £25 I get 150m any network/time and 850 texts I then pay £8 for 250mb of data ....for that contract - I managed to get a free Samsung i780. Its 18m contract but in 15m they waive the upgrade fee - so can upgrade then. No doubt there are better value plans out there - but for my usage this fits perfectly. Matt |

Such a useful and practical one. However, how do you assign an executable file to a button. Cant seem to figure out in the button assignment setting. Thanks Hi, You have to create a shortcut to the exe, and place it in Windows/Start Menu/Programs Then in the button settings you should see the shortcut and assign to a button. Regards Matt |

I tried the sync cable connected via a USB car charger adaptor in the car. The red light comes on but turns off almost immediately - so the sync cable wont charge in the car. Thinking out loud - I wonder if the sync cable connected to the battery charger box (the one that charges the battery outside of the phone) would work in the car? It would be a hassle to swop over batteries, but if it works, I would always have a spare fully charged battery. Matt |

Hi, Orange are offering a 250MB for £8 which aint bad - trouble is you have to have known about it before starting a new contract cos they dont offer it generally. I think it a business tariff that they are now offering (if you know about it) to personal customers. Matt |

About GPS.... it works fine on my mobile with Garmin and Google Maps without installing any third party software. I have had to use GPS Gate as without it I cannot get Route 66 to work. However, I am interested to know what your GPS settings are (i.e hardware/program port) and I'll try it on my device without starting GPS Gate. Thanks Matt |

Hi, I have another annoying problem... Up in the status bar, left to the Active Sync arrow icon, there is an icon that shows: -A little lock -Under the pin lock, it shows the letters PIN. In the down left corner, where the Phone is usually for the left hw-key there is now: -Message -When clicking on it, it only states: (In the progress bar: Telephone) and the in the information jus tthates: PIN Locked. How on earth do I get this thing removed?? When clicking OK on the message, I just get pushed to settings-Phone, where you can choose ring signal etc.... Have only seen this on my phone when its not in flight mode, and is waiting for you to enter the PIN unlock code for the SIM card. Other than that I dont know, unless some other app has re-mapped your soft keys. Matt |

My GPRS just keeps turning on all the time, really annoying! -Active Sync is set to Manual sync for both peak, and off peak hours. -Only nonstandard apps that I have is Total Commander, dupedupedupe and Jeyo SMS Backup. So, I dont know which app that initiates this constant dialup to the gprs?!? Second question: With most smartphones and PPCs, all you have to do to turn off the GPRS is to hold Red Button for about 2sec, this doesnt work with the Samsung i780. Any ideas on a fast way to turn it off?? -By going into Comm Manager and turn it off from there takes too long. There's gotta be a faster way. Thanks for the help! Hi, On the i780, there are a few other apps that may cause the GPRS to activate. If you use the RRS or podcast readers and leave them open with automatic update turned on The automatic clock update The windows update The microsoft customer feedback .....there maybe more - I cant remember When the GPRS is connected if you click on the 3G at the top - I have a disconnect button, but am not sure if another app I use called phonealarm has added this. Hope this helps. Matt |

Well, my touchpad doesnt work when i´m outside and the sun gets to the touchpad. Am I´m the only on who has this problem?? Hi, Exactly the same - the touch pad must use light to detect the movement of your thumb/finger or to be accurate detect dark areas on the pad to work out the movement. As soon as you go into the shade OR at least shade the touchpad whilst moving your finger it works fine again. Matt |

Hi, QUOTE I have assigned a key to the toggle screen when listening to music via A2DP, so that the display turns off. However when the next song is played the screen comes back on!! The backlight settings dont allow for the backlight to be completely turned off. The lowest is "Power Save" This setting dims the backlight after 10 secs but when the song changes it returns to the default brightness for 10 secs. Any advice? I have found that locking the device (ie holding down the end call key) prevents the backlight from firing up between songs. The backlight is still on all the time but is alot dimmer than normal. I have also tried a freeware program called "Screen Switch". This turns off the screen so is useful for that at least - however with regards to playing songs it still fires the screen back on between songs. 105 views but no replies so either no-one is using the i780 for listening to music via A2DP OR there is no solution yet to this problem. That is right. It looks like it is charging, but when it is diconnected there is no juice on the battery. Had exactly the same problem with my HTC Tilt and Universal In the past I used a company called boxwave. I tried different cables from different manufacturers but it was only boxwave that produced a retractable sync n charge cable that charged during syncing. I have emailed them to see if they plan to support the i780 (they do lots of accessories for the i760 here http://www.boxwave.com/products/easyfinder...ories_2923.htm) so hopefully soon. Might try plugging the sync cable into a USB car charging adaptor to see if it charges in the car. Matt |

Friends, I’ve had my i780 for nearly 2 months and I still haven’t managed to get the GPS working! I bought the handset from Orange (but have since had it unlocked). Like most people I have it setup to hardware port COM9, programs listen on COM8. Although applications seem to detect the GPS functionality, I can’t seem to get any satellites or GPS data.
Any support would be greatly appreciated. P.S Otherwise it’s a great phone and brilliant replacements for my treo 750v. Hi, Heres my setup. Received my Orange i780 on Friday. The GPS system I use is Route 66. I havent unlocked the phone or re-flashed the radio etc. The GPS didnt work straight out of the box. I set the GPS to Program port GPD1 and Hardware port to COM9 at 4800 baud rate. I had to install GPSGate. Dont use the Wizard to find the input. I manually added the input as WM GPS (Its listed at the bottom) This is the only one that will work on the i780. For the output - I only have GPSGate Direct and the virtual com I added. This virtual com was to share with NMEA applications. With these settings my GPSgate icon turns green quite quick (The most I have waited is 5 minutes) but to make sure all is working OK, its probably best if you try it with a clear sky and not inside or near tall buildings etc. As soon as GPSgate is green - I then launch Route66 and it works perfectly. Hope this helps. Matt |

Hi, There was an app that a chap called Vijay developed. I know it was mentioned on xda-developers forums, but it came with a warning that it could damage your device. Take a search over on xda-developers and you should be able to find something. Hope this helps. Matt |

I have got a similar, but slightly different problem: I synched my music as normal to my card, but when i go into media player and try to open my music from there, it brings up the error message "The system cannot find the file specified" I have not used any other music programmes on it. I have tired to re-synch it to no avail, and when I select "Update library", it finds all the music, but then crashes when it tries to add it to the library.... Just a thought, close WM player and delete the folders MSMETADATA and WMDRM from the storage card and also if there is a microsoft folder (Check its contents first - should be media related) in the Application Data folder in the main memory. Launch WM player again and update library (it might tell you that you need to anyway) and see how you get on....otherwise see my previous post about xda devs. Matt |

I spoke too soon. When accessing the audio files via the Windows Explorer, I still get the error message. The only way I can play my music files is if I open Media Player first, then choose Library. Any other suggestions? Sounds like the other app you installed has removed the file association for wma files. Using something like total commander allows you to reassign file associations. I think you'll need to do something like. From within total commander, find a wma file, select properties then associate to the wmplayer.exe Other than that ask over at xda-developers forums - they are usually a lot more populated than here unfortunately. Hi, Not sure if this helps, but the only time i had that error message was when i needed to update the WM library. Open WM and just run the update library option and see if it helps. Matt |

Another quick point to note is that - although your phone will connect to Orange MMS to retrieve the message. The only data transfer will be the actual message. Once the message is on your phone, no further transfer will occur although your phone will stay connected. On the M3100 the MMS and 3g/GPRS connections do not auto disconnect after use. There are 3rd party apps or reg hacks to force disconnection after an idle period. Basically I leave my 3G connected all day but only pay for data usage when I check my email or use IE. Its the same principle for the MMS connection. Annoying I know, but turning off the download immediately will at least only retrieve the header then its upto you if you want to get the rest of the message. Matt |
