Mornin all - quick question as I can't find anything through search:

There's an app available for the iPhone which uses the screen as an LED matrix display, so you can make any message scroll across the screen... it's written by a bloke called Masayuki Akamatsu (search on iTunes for more).

I was wondering whether anyone knows if anything similar is available for PPC/ Win Mobile (I have an HTC Touch)?

Cheers!

Andy

Post this on XDA developers and I am sure something will turn up pretty soon.

Hey folks if anyone knows where I can get a front face & keyboard only (I am not paying £35 for bits I don't need!) I will happily work out how to dismantle and then post a step by step instructions!

QUOTE(Shuflie @ Jul 29 2008, 13:19) *
Technically its the field of view that changes, not the focal length. My boss did a comparison between his full frame canon film camera and his 30D a few weeks ago using identical lenses on each. What he saw through the view finder on each did not make the subject seem larger or smaller in either camera, the real difference was that with the full frame camera he was able to see more at the edges of the scene. Of course printing out the images on the same size paper makes it look as if there is more telephoto magnification from the 1.6x 30D sensor, but the same effect can be achieved by enlarging the center portion of the full frame image before printing.
No it is not the same as zooming in a digital sense, as the effective resolution is decreased which leads to pixelation. With a crop factor you have the same number of pixels concentrated within the inner focal plane of the lens (full frame lens don't forget), so the quality of the final print is very much dependent on the quality of the glass used. Some full frame lens do not produce very good results with crop sensors which is why it is always better to use a lens designed specifically for digital sensors. Of course digital lenses can't be used with full frame sensors due to the focal plane not covering the full sensor area!

Another thing is that he used two different cameras with two different viewfinders - viewfinders show anything from about 86% to 97% of the image in a pro SLR. So the only fair test would have been to look at prints of carefully controlled subjects i.e. fixed focus lens with some sort of chart. The crop factor does exactly what it says so a 50mm lens on a 1.6x sensor will be equivalent to an 80mm lens on a full frame sensor.

It's not the battery getting hot, it's the GPS/wifi/whatever chips below and is very localised. I doubt the battery gets much warmer. It might be worth experamenting with batti to check the temp increase during GPS usage

If the battery remains cool then fine but if the battery is being heated externally or internally then either situation is not good.

I posted a reply to another thread before but I will post it here to see what feedback there is - I am really worried about all the people complaining of a hot battery - Li-ion batteries don't like getting warm they start to degrade rapidly when hot so my question is if the batteries only last a day or so now what can we expect in six months? Hmm.

I also watched the videos from the coolsmartphone guy and had some real issues as a result - he would demonstrate a feature, and you could see things weren't happening then all of a suddon the phone would flick over to something quite unrelated, although I understand he was maybe getting used to interface, but this mistake would then become the subject matter!!! Those vids left me feeling rather neutral overall.

I do like the look of this thing but I am not due for an upgrade until November, so I think this might be a blessing for me.

This is very worrying and has completely put me off upgrading to the Touch Diamond. Think about it - heat kills Li-ion batteries in fact it is the number one cause of premature Li-ion failure (apart from age) so if people struggle to get a day out of their Diamond from day one what about in 6 months time? two or three hours standby anyone?

Hi AWARNER, I am also interested in macro photography. One thing I will say is that the camera you choose should be comfortable with you. When I went to Jessops I had read about, and wanted the D50, but also, whilst at first dismissive, wanted to try the 350d. When I held the camera's in the shop I much preferred the 350d. I prefered the size, and the camera operated much better than I expected. This model was also cheaper at the time and had a couple more functions like Dof preview etc...

Image quality wise each manufacturer has their trates e.g. Nikon colours are quite vivid whereas Canon more tru to life which is perhaps more beneficial with Macro.

What I find frustrating about the 350d is that as I am getting better I am finding ISO adjustment very frustrating. You should not have to look away from the viewfinder to achieve this as it is a setting every bit as important as shutter & f-stop. This appears to have been addressed to some extent with the 450d, at least ISO is displayed within the viewfinder! Obviously not a problem with 20d +
Also autofocus was improved in the 400d, and improved yet again with the 450 so if you run around after your kids this could be all you need to know. The 350d doesn't really keep up with such subjects although lens choice is a prime contributer here.
Of course, there is Olympus and Nikon it may be more beneficial for you to go down the Olympus route but personally I would concentrate on how the thing feels first as you are effectively starting over, so the 'system' argument maybe doesn't apply here.

So what to do? Go to DPreview or Steves digicams, and get an idea how to use the cameras, i.e. how to use functions you think you will use then get down to Jessops and try each camera in turn. I think you will be instinctively drawn to the camera you want by this time and that is the one I would personally buy.

I should contribute a couple of my better shots I guess...

Coolpix 8700, amazing camera for Macro as long as subject doesn't move. SLR + Lens to match perhaps £600 ++ (No kit lens will come close here!!!)

My best so far (just for detail) with Canon 350d and Sigma 17-70 Macro lens

So I guess the other point is if money is tight and the kit lens can't do what you want is SLR the right choice?

Hi I have finally got round to compiling a load of tunes for my E650 first converted from mp3 to 96kbs WMA using Any Audio Converter, then I used file properties in explorer to tag all the tracks (I am sure someone is going to tell me there is a much quicker way to do all this for free lol) anyway on the albums I have converted and tagged when selecting Artist in the library I get to see one song and that is it...? Just as an example I select the artist, then 'All songs by artist' or, maybe the album name I have used, the list appears but I only get the first song and that is it! Everything else is shoved under Unknown mad.gif

Anyone know what is going on? Is this a WMA thing because I didn't have this problem with mp3's...!

Hey folks this is the second time I have had this problem and I don't know why... First time round I uninstalled and re-installed activesync but I am not doing this again!

I configured Comdo to the following...

Destinations ports 990,999,5678,5721,26675
Source IP 169.254.2.0 - 169.254.2.99

Everything works fine, then... all of a sudden my phone can't get through the firewall... First time this happened the 'adapter info' showed 000.000.00.00 for the 'windows mobile device' IP but now it is showing the address 169.254.2.99 huh.gif Clearly this has changed out of the range I set and I don't know why or how to reset it?

So why would activesync change to settings outside it's specification?

Olly.

Hmm wierd. If you can get the IMSI from the UI it should work at startup as well. Do you have other applications in startup? Anyway, a new release of SEF is underway that should support more devices.

No other apps on startup..

Looking forward to the REPLACE INTO...
Can I suggest something? Could you get the program to prompt the user to re-enter the password when initially entering? Think that's it for now!

This little utility will automatically detect if the SIM card of a smartphone or pocket pc was replaced. Star EnForcer will automatically send a SMS message to a previously specified phone number containing the new SIM IMSI and current location in hexa LAC-CID combination. The message will repeat every 30 minutes.

http://www.fightersoft.ro/sef/index.htm

How does it work:

- install the CAB in the phone/ppc memory (not the storage card). Make sure that you have installed it in \Program Files\SEF
- launch SEF - initially there is no password so press OK. Press Get IMSI. If a long number will appear then it means that the application is compatible with your smartdevice. Mostly C600 - based models should work, C500, Wizard PPCs etc
- input the phone number that you want to use in case your smartdevice is stolen (use a parent's mobile phone, a friend's etc)
- input a password
- press save
- press activate

Now... in case someone steals your phone the first thing they will do is to (obviously) replace the SIM. SEF will automatically detect that the SIM has been replaced by comparing IMSI information. After 30 minutes SEF will automatically send a SMS to the predefined phone number that will include the current SIM's IMSI and the current GSM location (LAC-CID combination in hexa). With the first information and the fact that you will clearly see the thief's phone number you can go to the network operator or the police. If the thief is using a SIM with a subscription he is nailed. If he is using a prepay SIM then at least you will draw comfort from the fact that the credit from that SIM will be drained in a few days because the fact that SEF will automatically repeat the message every 30 minutes (you will also be able to track the thief). With the second information you can either go to the network operator or take your chances that MTS - http://www.fightersoft.ro/mts/index.htm will have this location in the database.

Remember, SEF doesn't require a GPRS connection. It will send SMSes to you from everywhere in the world.

Now let's suppose that you really want to replace the SIM card. Follow these steps:

- make a copy of starenforcer.exe in the same folder (very important). Run the copy. Insert the password and press deactivate.
- restart your smartdevice.
- launch SEF from the start menu, input your password and get the new IMSI, press save and that's it.

This is far from a perfect sollution with obvious flaws. However, please don't advertise them and if you have any ideeas on how to improuve security, please tell me in private. In my opinion, this software is more than a match for the clueless bus thief.

User feedback is always welcome and appreciated.

Hi Stargate, this is potentially a great little program and I hope you don't give up supporting it!
Anyway I have tried on both my C600 & E650 and unfortunately the only time I can get either phone to text is when I select the test. I have noticed that the IMSI information seems to dissapear when restarting the program.
Also when I swapped sims on restarting the C600 I noticed this program briefly appeared at startup but again without the IMSI info...
Could you shed light on this please?

Olly.

Anyway, I want to send files and the odd contact between my c600 and E650. They both see each other alright, but when I come to send the data I first get a 'pending' and then shortly followed by 'failed'.

I have tried looking for various settings that could be the problem but no luck..

Oh I did transfer a contact to my sisters Nokia off my C600 recently but am unable to deicide which phone is at fault here.

Thanks,

Huh? Of course you can switch! A phone loaded with features and tons of software (my 2 GB MicroSD is almost full) would be totally useless without multitasking.

I am also dissapointed by the speed of this device. Compared to my C600 it is rather slow. Too early to say if I am keeping it though.

thanks folks yes I have checked deleted items nothing there.... sad.gif
The reason I thought there may be different profiles in outlook is because once I opened outlook without my phone connected and no contacts were visible. I shut down outlook connected my phone and all the contacts re-appeared - I am certain they hadn't been freshly synced because I normally check the number of items synced each time. Also there is no reason why they would have been deleted before this event as I don't mess with settings and regulary connect. I have also recovered my contacts from the recycle bin after a similar thing Chucky.egg mentioned. Just can't get my head round this!
I refuse to believe they aren't somewhere on this f@#king computer ph34r.gif

Hi folks, got my replacement c600 this morning after last one developed a fault. Anyway, before releasing my old phone I synced to PC and saw the contacts bar progressing so assumed all contacts were safe.

Now I got my new phone first I had to upgrade active sync to 4.2(?) from 3.9(?), so I assumed my new phone had a different firmeware version.. anyway when I sync I have noticed...
1. the new phone has been allocated a new name, and I have had no choice in this and 2. All my contacts have disapeared from outlook ohmy.gif Now, is it possible that if I can rename my phone to the the same as the last phone then I will see my old profile with my missing contacts in outlook?
Sorry if it's a simple solution but I have never had this problem before and I am banging my head against a wall trying to work out where my contacts have gone!!!
Hope someone can help!
Thanks..

Olly.
