Just looked it up. The 8380 has the MQ1188 and the 8390 has the MQ2150. Both are accelerator chips. I really like the camera specs on the 8390 tho. The 8380 camera is a toy compared to the 8390 resolution.

The Mitac Mio 8380 was bundled with an installer called CStar. I think that'll give your chinese language if you can find it.

Actually, the Mitac Mio 8380 also has a simular video accelerator made by qmedia...which is the company nvidia bought. My bet is they are simular chip, but now that it's a "geforce" product it's getting the more usual nvidia press

Whenever you get emails like this make sure to look at the raw email header. From: can be spoofed, but the actual header for an email will give you the true source. It can be very enlightening as to the validity of the source of the email. My bet someone is messing with you. If it is Orange, they need to state specificly just what law is being broken. Afterall, the app unlock state on the phone is merely a provxml preference file setting.

Mio 8380 does 176x144 or 320x240 video or stills. Also has settings for contrast and brightness and 50hz or 60hz flicker control settings. The digital zoom is ugly tho. I don't use it. just adds noise to the pics. Looking at the avi header for the video files from the phone it shows as DMK2 codec format not mpeg4 btw.

Soudns nice. Will it work properly with Panther? MS opensource? Donno about that. They'd rather hack off their own head than open source anything...

The 8380 has digital zoom built into their app. Digital zoom is ugly. better just to snap it without zoom and digital zoom it in photoshop.

Ah, I think the CECT 2.0 cd zip installer that was floating around had german plus every other language out there for smartphone. I'll check it later tonight to be sure.

I've been using a Mitac Mio 8380 with T-Mobile no problem. Just went to a t-mobile store at the local mall and they dropped in a free sim and I was up and running in about 5 minutes. They billed the activation to my first month bill, so I walked out of hte store without having to pay anything at the time. In my area t-mobile and at&t are availalbe for gsm/gprs phones. t-mobile has a better pricing structure imho. Ask about their $19.95 for unlimited gprs addon package.

Looks like the link has been pulled. I now have a theory that 12 hours after anything about the Mio 8380 hits MoDaCo Mitac locks it down... If they were only as prompt with their customer service.

I just tested it out. Again flashing rom is dangerous. Use at your own peril. I noticed 2 things in the instructions that were omited. 1) BACKUP you files. 2) Erase IPSM. I didn't erase ipsm on my first 3 tries and it gave a flash write error message at around 22%. Glad I didn't turn off phone then. I merely went to the IPSM menu and erased the IPSM then went back to flashrom menu. I've yet to test any unlocked apps but I can tell you that the phone boots ok after the flashrom.

Er, it is very easy to share a virus with a smartphone. It might not effect the phone but it might effect the computer you transfer the infected files to. I often put pdf and ms word files on my phone to bring between work and home.

That'll end up screwing us 8380 users out of what looks like a good game. Not everyone has an unlocked SPV

Just received email from the game developers for these games. They say that they'll be available soon at both www.handango.com and www.smartphone.net.

Er, all of those apps are digitally certified. The Mitac Mio 8380 is "app locked". _0_ digitally unsigned apps will install on the Mio 8380. ...and about 60% of the digitally signed ones will because of a digital signature bug in the Mio Mitac 8380 build of Smartphone 2002.

CStar is the chinese language cab. Don't install it unless you want chinese.

Strange, they install just fine on app locked Mio 8380's. Makes me wonder what digital certs are on the Mio 8380 and what aren't.

Hrrrm, after testing I realized that fonts don't render correctly. A huge problem if this is to softproof anything pdf. I suppose I could outline fonts before testing as a workaround.
