Hello, I am a (very) new member of MoDaCo forums!

I just have a few questions to ask about the Orange SPV E200 as I'm considering getting this handset this month.

Just some small questions at first (because I only just decided to join) I'll post more when I think of them!

What file format are the ringtones in (.wav, .mid etc.)

Is it... slow?

Can you design your own software for the handset?

[i forgotten there were so many questions I wanted to ask...!!]

I'm not an expert with the SPV so I don't know much, but I'm happy to learn new explanations about the phone such as "physical memory" or SD Cards.

Thankyou!

(Please delete this thread if questions have been answered as I haven't searched THOROUGHLY, because I have a very expensive silly slow internet connection and this is probably first of many times I will moan about this! I can however do a search at occasioanal opportunities at College.)

Thankyou!

You can have .wav or .wmv as your ringotnes :)

Is it... slow?

Nope, it's nice considerably quicker than original SPV

Can you design your own software for the handset?

Yep, you can either use c++ to program software or use .NET technology to write programs, but the programs written in .net will only work in Smartphone 2003, which E200 has :D

Thankyou for your reply, a few more question...!

I've been doing more research and found that to use (install) applications such as a "stopwatch" the phone needs to be unlocked, is this true?

How much built in memory does it have (hard drive!).

I've read it's touchscreen, this is incorrect isn't it?

How can it be unlocked to use on other networks?

Can I use an Orange PAYG SIM card (before any unlocking procedures).

Can you get lots and lots of useful applications??!!!! (I've seen msmobiles.com).

Is it safe to use applications? Or, do you have to be a little worried like you would be with PCs about running a for example .exe program, that it might harm your computer?

Thanks for the help, will now continue browsing this forum for more info!

Hello m8!

OK, em ...

the e200 is unlocked to some software. Alot of applications will install on it with a prompt telling you it may be unsafe - however, there have been no reports of any apps which have harmed phones in any major way, & bugs are usually tracked here if there are any. But dont worry about installing software, if you get it from a reliable source then it'll be OK. The worst that might happen is your phone resetting, & losing its memory, but if you backup fairly often its not too traumatic! The joy of having all your contacts stored on your PC!! :D

The e200 can still be unlocked for software (called "decertification") by the Orange developers OTA site, which will allow full access for installing anything you like (you will need to do this to install some skins).

It has an internal storage of about 30MB, and a physical memory of about 16MB.

Thats right, its not touchscreen.

At present I dont think the e200 can be sim-unlocked to work on any network. Orange kind of have us by the short & cirlies on that one ATM.

I think you can use a PAYG simcard in it as long as its Orange, without any unlocking or anything. The only problem is the price of gprs!!

You can get stacks of useful apps!!

Get one m8! The e200 is full of features, loads of detail in your contacts list, good interaction with outlook on your PC, it has a great inbox which allows you to set up multiple email accounts, the camera isnt bad, msn messenger works good, the calendar has every function you could need, & the new Orange homescreen shortcuts allow you to acces pretty much anything from 1 click on the homescreen ... I could go on! & thats just the actual features of the phone out of the box! Once you get one you'll discover how VERY customisable it is! You can change every screen (nearly!), every sound, & the list of homescreen designs just keeps getting more impressive! You can buy hundreds of apps & games ... loads of stuff!! Loads of free stuff too!

The only drawback with the e200 so far has been the damn speaker problem. I don't know if you'll be able to, but if you're buying it from a shop, try to get the handset setup in the shop, & phone Orange 150. If the handset has the buzzing problem, you'll notice straight away! We are waiting for a fix for this from Orange (although we may be very old by the time it gets here! :) ), but I, like most other e200 users, have learned to live with it in the meantime. I wouldn't advise AGAINST getting one because of the speaker, but it would be better to hear it first, then make up your mind. Anyway, you always get 14 days to change it if you can't deal with it!

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply.

"shortcuts allow you to acces pretty much anything from 1 click on the homescreen ... I could go on! "

Please do, believe it or not, I'd like to hear as much info about it as possible - and user info is great, because you're not going to ten review sites and finding the same info - the specification, buttons great etc.! I've even read a lot from the manual that I downloaded from Orange's site.

I'm under the impression that you think I'm getting a new contract, but, I'm getting it (if I do) by phoning Orange, they say from Customer Relations it's £79.99 whereas from the shop it's £179.99. (I'm on a low contract - £13.99 a month). It will be an upgrade, from my Panasonic GD87e.

Thanks for all the information given!

I'm about to finish my 12-month contract, this was my first year, and my monthly spend is £13.99 on Orange OVP T-Mobile Freetime 750.

What is the cheapest way I can get the SPV E200?

get a new contract!

I got my SPV from fones4free at £25 for a £25 contract. I hardly use voice so have dropped to a lower tarrif.

You can get a handset for free for a high tarrif and change it after a month. Orange may get a bit uppity if you are an old customer though.

I have thought of more questions! - Do you have to select whether you want to receive a report for every text message? So there is no option to turn delivery reports on all the time?

Where can you download ringtones? I download polyphonic ringtones for my Panasonic GD87e using WAP, but if the SPV doesn't support polyphonic ringtones, what can I do?

In profiles, do you have setting for screen brightness? If I'm going to sleep, I'd like perhaps the silent profile, and I'd also like the screen brightness to be low.

Also in profiles, is there a discreet text message beep tone as there is on the Nokia 3310e? The tiny beep that comes from the earpiece (not the main speaker) when a text message is received.

How on earth does the joystick work??? I've only seen images of this phone so far, and the joystick doesn't look like it can move! It only looks like it can go inwards, and can't go left/right/up/down!!!

Thankyou!

em ... like I said before, you can customise every sound on the phone (nearly). I'm not sure about polyphonic ringtones, but you can create .wav files & apply them to any sound - so you can make your own ringtones of anything you like.

The screen brightness has 2 levels, but automatically switches off after about 10 secs, so you dont need to worry about that!

& yes, of course the joystick works!

Oh, & yes, you can set message reports on/off.

Just go get one, will ya!!?? :)

OK, I'll tell you what happened:

I phoned Orange to cancel my contract (only got it in the first place because of the Panasonic GD87e) and I asked I'd think about staying if they had any offers, the person said OK, SPV E200 free. I said I'd phone them back (I wanted to see which phone I should get - they said any phone free except P900). So I phoned back and everybody at Orange is saying I wasn't offered such a price and that it would cost £79.99. I didn't even want the SPV, but now after getting all the info on it, I love it to bits - I think it's the blitz!!!

So, I've been writing a letter of complaint, after a bit of tweaking, I'll send it. I'm 16, College Student, don't have a job yet, so I'm going to try and tweak it really really ell, so that it convinces the Manager I'm telling the truth and so he/she gives me the Orange SPV E200.

So, drblow, that's my story, do you mind me asking if you work in the mobile communications industry and if so what part?

Thankyou :)

Yes, I work for Orange public relations dept!! :( :D

Sorry - if you read some of my previous posts about Orange, you'll get it!

No m8 - I'm a musician! I just have a whole lotta spare time sitting at my PC, mucking around with my phone, & reading Modaco!

Good luck with the letter to O. Previous experience would say don't hold your breath for a speedy response.

Let us know how you get on, OK?

Well, I saw the SPV E200 for the first time today (a real one, not dummy) and I still feel the same about it - I still want it, no more, no less than I did previously!

The camera didn't look too impressive, because I'm sure my Panasonic GD87e screen looks better, however, it did still have its plastic scratch protection on!

The font looked less smooth than I thought it should, but I understand that this can =be made smoother by installing ClearType, right?

The joystick I found out how it works - didn't even have to look at it, just came naturally!

Obviously I couldn't use it properly because in the shop it's pretty impossible e.g. transferrring images to PC!

I rang last Friday to renew my Orange contract for my hubby, and Orange quoted me £79.99 for the E200. I told them I wasn't interested in paying for a phone so I would be cancelling my contract - not a lie, I'm not bothered who the airtime is with. Quick as a flash they put me through to the retention department where I got the phone free and also 150 free picture messages for use in the first month.

The phone is very nice, no doubt I'll get it in a year when we change again, I'm in sole charge of the now slightly tatty SPV. I must admit I still prefer my Motorola T280i, which just...makes calls. But hey, it's still cute, I suppose.

That really, really does make me angry!

Congratulations for getting it, but make sure you appreciate it OK, I'm going through a lot of hassle at the moment!

Anyway... more questions,

can you set the time when it switches itself on or off?

I'm sure it does, but does it show the furation of the call straight after the call?

Another thing, the headset that comes with the SPV E200, does it have 2 earpieces or just one?

BTW, I've sent away the letter to Orange on Weds evening, awaiting reply... Good Luck to me!!!

Ok don't know if this is a really really stupid question but I noticed that the original SPV now has an update (1.61 if I remember correctly) - should I update my E200 with this as it says it has manufacturer number 1.6.0? Thought I had best ask before knackering my new phone up?

SPV/SPV E100 is OS smartphone2002 and the E200 is OS smartphone2003 with all the extra software and drivers for bluetooth, camera, etc.

Hopefully it would never let you attempt the SPV 1.61 download to an E200 as it would definitely bust your phone and I don't think there would be any way back at the moment, ie SP2003 software is not readily available for re-download.

There is no software upgrade for the E200 as yet but i'm sure that Orange are working on it.

Adding to my question above, when you take pictures/video record the television, are there lines on the SPV's screen, or is it super clear?

And, why's one of the SPVs called HTC Canary and the other HTC Voyager?!

In total there are 3 spv phones.

They are all made by a company that are called HTC.

Orange have bought all 3 and call the first one SPV, second one, E100 and third one E200.

The name canary and voyager is just what htc call 2 of them.

I´m waiting for the Qtek 8080 here in Sweden.. (HTC Voyager)

And the other questions?

Not to you personally, Lifestream, but just a general "hello, I still had more questions" to anybody who can help answer them!

The headset that comes with the phone has 2 earpieces, just like a regular personal steroe headphone set, except with a mouthpiece for handsfree.

The camera is OK, not bad for lines. It is quite dark at times, altho there are some settings which can adjust for different lighting. But its not a really WOW camera or anything. It's OK.

Now seriously, go get one!

No I mean, when I take pictures (or point my Panasonic GD87e camera to a TV screen or computer monitor) there are funny lines on the phone screen - so is this the same with SPV E200?

I've sent the letter, waiting for a reply from Orange.
