I hope this is not true. If it is our MPX200's will be useless to new apps and games within a year!

That's life I am afraid, still don't envisage keeping the MPx200 for a moment later than the first MPx220 is released..... 8) 8)

this was just a rumor from the news groups (and its old news)

No ROM upgrade to Smartphone 2003 for Motorola MPx200

January 05, 2004

it has now been confirmed that there might be an upgrade to wm2k3

msmobilenews.com:

We confirmed that the MPx200 model will have an upgrade to Smartphone 2003 released from Motorola. The one caveat given was that while Motorola will release it, it will be up to the carriers to release it to their customers after customizing for their branded units

later

Owen,

I am not being funny but 'confirmed' and 'might' in the same sentence = *rumour*.

Can you honestly see O getting round to this after the length of time it took them to release the 1.6 update for the SPV / SPV E-100? I think we will all be on 3G by then! :)

Such fearmongering out there. Is the upgrade for real? Yes, 100%. It has already been finished by Motorola actually, and is just being final tested by the carriers. Now, you do bring up one good question: When will the carriers release it? ATTws in the USA has committed to releasing it in Q2 2004. No word on Orange, and Motorola has stated that it is up to the carrier when they release it, if at all. Some will, some won't. Sucks, but C'est la vie isn't it?

Is 2003 really needed on the mpx200? and I mean really needed.

The only thing I want moto to do is to fix the keyboard drivers as they

have screwed them up to be almost unusable for special games in development :)

you bet it is needed. how about all the apps being written for it? how about faster? how about checking more than one mail account in separate containers? less crashing? more ie features? it is a worthy upgrade to be sure. hey dont upgrade if you dont want to but i am sure that most people will want to. :-)

Faster; not proven the mpx as is is runs faster than the E200 as it is.

Email; agree for some

Less Crashing; with all the playing around with the phone I'm doing, I'm

still waiting for my first crash.

More features; not many new features at all the only thing that may be possible is to be able to use BT SD card but that is ok as long as you don't need your storage card for anything.

one thing I've learned: never trust msmobiles news... they post a lotta s*** so never rely on it.

ask yourself one thing... if Motorola won't bring out a 2003 update they'll lose favor in the customers opinion... and if they don't do it some whizkid will find a way!

Given that up to at least a month ago, Orange were advertising the MPx200 as runing Smartphone 2003, I think it would be a very silly move for them not to release it to their customers!

Even if it has an arial?

I would find it a lot more useful to NOT have an arial (keep my phone in my pocket) than having a camera (lets face it the quality is never great on them, spv being the best yet). IMHO

hey look on bright side motos 2002 is stronger than htc 2002(less crashes) so there 2003 shd rock/ comon were talking about a comp who at cost to them self had to reprogram a lot of handsets to 2002 from 2003 as they had made 100,000 units already now in my opinion they get thumbs up they could of done a htc and released a buggy phone

Okay people, let's remember one thing:

Let's not compare different platforms of Smartphones, as that is not valid. Microsoft has stated that on the same platforms, all things being the same, Smartphone 2003 will run about 20-30% faster, and have less crash issues. That alone is worth it to me. Enough said.

below is a reply from Motorola customer services;

"Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Motorola.

This is expected to be available in February, we are at present awaiting the upgrades from Microsoft.

For any further assistance or information please do not hesitate to contact us again, quoting your reference number. Motorola Cellular Response Centre (UK)

-----------------------

my original e-mail

"Dear Sir/Madam, I recently purchased the Motorola MPX200, with which I

am very impressed indeed. However, I would like to know if you plan to

release an upgrade to Smartphone 2003 at some point. I was informed

this was the case at the Orange shop, but can find nothing official

from yourselves.

Many thanks

Mark"

Just my 2p!

Nice post siksik6, it's one of those 'feel good' posts. I just hope that it comes to pass.

I like the MPx200, it would be good to know that it has a future as far as keeping up with new handsets. If the MS propaganda about 2003 being 20-30% faster on the same platform is to be beleived then all the better, in fact any improvement is worth it.

Thanks again siksik6, keep us informed.

Matt.

Is it really only me that remembers phone with room for5 or 10 names, ONE ring tone and a battery life of less than a day?

(well, about 4 hours for my first one!!)

I would like an upgrade to 2003 sure, but as I only have this phone for a max of 10 months before I upgrade handset again I am sure my sleep will not be disturbed

I have had NO crashes, or lock ups in the two months I have had this phone my SEp800 locks up at least once a week.

If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Motorola.

In response to your enquiry regarding the MPx200.

1. Smartphone 2003 is pending once it has been arranged with Microsoft.

2 and 3. There are no plans at present for a SIM unlatched MPx200. The reason is

that Orange paid for exclusive rights to release this phone initially. However,

once this period has expired there should be SIM unlatched units available to

the general public.
