Surreal Start - the Smartphone Start Menu Replacement - has now been released to the public.

Registration costs £5 or alternately join MoDaCo Plus and get registration FREE (see here for further details.)

To purchase a registration code and extra details visit Surreal Services.

This program replaces the normal start menu on your phone. This improves performance if you have a lot of shortcuts. Also it has a T9 mode (on by default) which finds apps in the start menu in much the same way as your contacts list works.

Features:

- T9 Mode

- High performance

- Full Skin support

- Speed Dial Creation

On the first run after a reboot or after picking "refresh menu" it takes 10-30 seconds to load as it reads your Start Menu. In normal usage it should load instantly. If you add items to your start menu or install new apps you need to choose "refresh menu" to see these new items.

After installation you must reboot. Please make sure you choose the correct version depending on your phone. Tested on SPV original, e100 and e200.

To remove Surreal Start use settings-remove programs DO NOT JUST DELETE IT. If you have deleted it or some other problem copy the SurrealStartUninstall.cab to IPSMWindowsStartup and reboot your phone to uninstall.

Unfortunately I can not offer any kind of warranty. Please check the trial version on your phone before purchasing a copy as I am unlikely to give refunds.

Woohoo now everyone can have the most excellent and most essential Surreal Start :D

If you dont run this already, i recommend an immediate purchase as this speeds the menu up no-end :)

Very nice, might even tempt me to join MoDaCo Plus. I'll have to see about trials of other software first though.

Edit: This isn't mentioned in the Plus Sticky - at least not in the first post - are there any other things not in that post which might tempt me?

How do I purchase it without Paypal?

I'm in Malaysia and Paypal has this strange policy of accepting credit cards even from Congo and Amazon but not Malaysia.

The e200 will run unlocked apps, however there are still restrictions on an "off the shelf" e200 which due to the system nature of Surreal Start needs to be unlocked.

e200s can be unlocked via OTA, however, looking a bit further OTA doesn't seem to exist anymore... keep an eye out, I'm sure someone will have a unlocking solution soon.

Maybe if I make enough money I'll buy app signing... which may fix the problem. Depends on the rules Orange has set.

Oops, just read phone has to be app unlocked. I thought it already was. How do I unlock it further?

Sorry, at the moment I only have paypal... however I believe you can join MoDaCo Plus without using paypal and that gets you a free reg code... it's another option :)

I was thinking about gettin this (or joining plus) but it doesnt seem to be compatible with the use of xbar...i often like to close all currently running programs with xbar and surrealstart appears there as "programs", when i close it, it has to do the restart all over again (so speedwise its not much different to the normal start menu). You should be able to get around this though, programs like imeter can "hide" so they dont appear in task managers like xbar.

Considering how long this has been in beta with the plus people im suprised no one has brought this up (well maybe they have :)) cos quite a few of them must use xbar...you could possibly talk to the people who made imeter or xetra the maker of xbar to see if you can get it so surreal start to hide from xbar.

The latest versions behaviour.

QuickClose -> Doesn't close

SP Task Manager -> Doesn't close

IA Task Manager -> IA Task Manager will prompt that it hasn't closed and offer to kill it more agressively. If you respond yes it closes.

I haven't tried xbar but will now. Basically if an app sends a WM_CLOSE message to Surreal Start it doesn't close, however if the app kills the Surreal Start thread there is not much I can do. I would be concerned if xbar was killing threads as it's default closing behaviour as this runs the risk of losing unsaved data as the application won't be closed down cleanly.

Activate x-bar, make sure that 'PROGRAMS' is selected (surreal start) then press 1. This will close all apps apart from surreal start :)/

yeah i know that blewer, but that actually takes too much effort (i might sound lazy) but normally when i use xbar to close everything its cos there is quite a bit open, and if i have to fin the program menu everytime and make sure its selected it becomes a pain. I could just do the same with my normal programs menu and then that would be almost (or just as?) fast as surreal...

Thanks for the response spacemonkey :) looks like you took all this into account, might have something to do with the fact i have xBAR 2. Something for xetra to look at me thinks :D

I'll buy myself a copy of xBar and see exactly what it does and then have a chat with xetra.

The other option would be to try something else for closing things... QuickClose (free) and SP Task Manager (free on Plus) both are good solutions that you can just tie to a speed dial. Not saying you should have to change, but it's just an option. The speed difference isn't everything though, there's also T9 mode which I presonally use all the time.

At the end of the day it's about personal preference, but if sometime in the future I can resolve the xBar conflict I will.

Just me being cheeky, but in the t9 mode could you add the ability to search by the start of any word? For example if I want PHM Registry Editor I currently have to search by PHM, not Registry or Editor. I know I could just rename my links but on some it's more difficult. I was expecting it to be like searching contacts, you ken?
