Given the tradition of vague, misleading, and contradictory information coming from various VZW sources, this could be a good sign. I suggest a few of us that monitor this forum try contacting VZW and if we get a couple of verifications from different folks, post it here to get some confidence in the info.

Here was the reply I got from the web. I basically ased when and how the 2003 update would show up.

The Samsung i600 uses Microsoft SmartPhone 2002. SmartPhone 2003 Phone Edition is not currently available for the i600. The Samsung i600 is a wireless phone integrated with a SmartPhone device.

Because of the tight integration of the SmartPhone and phone features, software and firmware updates are not available as they would be for other non-integrated Pocket PC devices. Software and firmware updates for Verizon Wireless phones and integrated PDAs are only available through Verizon Wireless retail locations. Verizon Wireless and Samsung are working toward a solution that should be available in a few months to upgrade the i600's operating system to SmartPhone 2003 Phone Edition. Please feel free to check back with us periodically for available updates.

What I got from vzw support today is;

Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless website. As part of our Worry Free Guarantee, your concern becomes our concern the first time you contact us. We are happy to assist you with your Samsung i600 question.

Samsung is still testing the Smartphone 2003 software for compatibility with their i600. We have recently learned that testing is nearly complete and the operating system software upgrade should be available by the middle of June. If released, the update should be a free update for all owners of the Samsung i600. We have not heard of any plans to offer a Smart Phone 2004 update.

If you would like to receive e-mail updates regarding new products and services, please click on "E-mail Updates" from the "Support" tab located at the top of our www.verizonwireless.com home page.

Great news, isn't it?

Ahh..... yeah. I'll believe it when I see it. At this point it's a necessary update and I can only hope that PocketIE has been improved (I heard it's exactly the same and pray this isn't the case.) It's still Verizon's fault this phone is signed... and that there is no per contact ring setting. Ridiculous.

The i600 is not application locked, the applications do not need to be signed to install. However, there are parts of the registry that cannot be modified by a user.

I'm with you on this issue, I'll believe it when I see it. I hate the smartphone IE version also. Get xbar so you can at least kill that trash when it slows to a halt.

I'm starting to feel like a Bungie customer... "Halo 2 will be out in Sept,...no, sometime in Q1 of next year,.. when monkeys fly outta my a$$!" Cough it up already! MS/VZW/&Samsung had "supposedly" coordinated and worked on compatability issues for at least a YEAR prior to the i600 release. The Mitac Mio in Asia is being sold with the 2003 OS already installed so what's the problem!?! -a little tip for VZW... start working on WMSp 2006 compatability issues now so I can get the upgrade in a timely manner...................................... ................................................................... Hello Mark,

Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless website. As part of our Worry Free Guarantee, your concern becomes our concern the first time you contact us. We are happy to assist you with the Samsung i600 operating system upgrade.

We do apologize for the delay in the release of the new operating system for the Samsung i600 handset. We are releasing the Smartphone 2003 Edition for this handset. Due to the fact that the operating system is tied into the phone's software, the testing of the operating system took longer than expected. Also, we are expected to release a new service that can be used with the device, so more testing was involved.

At this point, we have been advised that the testing is almost complete and we are looking to release the new edition with in the next couple of months (hopefully mid to late July is the time frame we were advised). Since the official launch date has not been given, we do not want to give the impression that the time frame is etched in stone. Nonetheless, we have been assured that the release date will be soon.

Once again we do apologize for any inconvenience that this delay of the release of the new operating system has caused you.

If you have further questions or concerns, please contact us anytime through e-mail using the address of [email protected]. We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless.

Sincerely,

Ricky

This has become way past retarded. The 2003 upgrade was a big selling point for this phone and if things go true to form It should be released when it's time to exercise my new every two policy with VZW (DEC 2005) The service they are working on had better be awesome like tying in the i600 to the Get It Now features. Though thinking about it I probably wont rush right out and be the upgrade guinnea pig as there will probably be alot of bugs in the OS anyway...It IS Microsoft we're talking about here. Is VZW going to let the i600 owners choose when they get the upgrade or will they insist on us getting it upon release or pay for it later? I'd like to see Wi-Fi support as well as Bluetooth...but not if that's going to add more time to the release date. -MalKiE

Acording to an article written up in PocketPC magazine, The writer of the article had gone to a Tech convention and while there stepped up to the Samsung booth to look for new toys/accessories for his i600. While there he tried the vinyl keyboard (I've had mine for months now, If you don't have it I strongly reccommend getting it) and was shown an i600 with the 2003 OS running on it. The Samsung rep did not have a release date for the rest of us schmoes but did seem to think it was coming very soon. Mace2k posted SmartSS shots from his recently upgraded i600 on another forum and I downloaded those shots as something tangilble to look at. It's out there and it's coming soon, just how soon remains to be seen. Later, -MalKiE

Is the vinyl keyboard you mention the one produced by Samsung? If not, who manufacturies it so I might take a look. I've only had my i600 a couple of weeks now & have been looking around at keyboards & other accessories.

Why yes, now that you mention it, it is. If you get it from the Samsung website rather than retail you can probably find it at a discount. I did about two/three months ago and it was 20% off the $75.00 retail price and they waived S&H charges so total price after tax was like $58.00 and it really does save time on emails and SMS's also usable in Orneta Notes or other "notes" programs. It also makes control in games like DragonBane II and NetHack 3.4.3 a snap (I haven't tried other games yet). What I'm really waiting for is fully functioning pocket versions of Word and Excel rather than just viewers (though I'll probably have to wait for the 2004 OS upgrade to come out in 2006) 8D -MalKiE

Cool! I have both Nethack & Dragon Bane II. Nethack installed & runs fine but I've not been able to get Dragon Bane II installed at all. I have the ARM cab. Is that the same that you have? If not, where'd you order yours from ... maybe I can get support to send the correct version.

It's been awhile but let me see if I can remember the steps I took... I downloaded what I thought was a full version of the game from some website (Handango) and I believe, no, I'm certain it was the ARM.cab and played it for two weeks before deciding to buy the licensing key. I went to the dragon bane website and followed the link back to Handango and purchased the key for $24.95. they sent it and i put it in and it laughed at me. so i contacted support both at Handango and at the dragon bane site. I ended up having to remove DBII from my phone and re-install and then enter the key code. If I remember correctly all I did was double click on the ARM.cab icon and activesync did the rest. After the initial F* up It has worked fine though I haven't played it since I beat it (for the second time) about a month and a half ago. Have you gone to the Samsung website? There are three critical updates for the I600 there. the MSN patch, the Caller ID patch, and the HCKR registry key fix which unlocks the i600 about as much as you'll ever get it to unlock but enough to let alot of unsigned apps on where previously they weren't allowed. -MalKiE

Yes I've been to the Samsung site & installed all the available updates. My version of Dragon Bane II came as a self-installer (Arm version) and not as a cab file. When I run it from the desktop via Activesync I get the same old problem - looks as though it's installing on the phone but I never get any option of sending it to my smart card and the installation never seems to take place. Cab files I can just copy to the phone & run from there ... they seem to install just fine in most cases.

Hang on a sec I'm gonna check and see if I have the original file on my desktop though I did all that on my wife's ME machine so I may have to use SmartexplorerEN 2.0.2 and check properties on the phone to see which version it is. -MalKiE

Yeah I found another site ... tried to d/l the demo version ... it too came as the installer exe ... same thing w/ it as w/ the other ... almost nothing that I've tried in the installer form works although almost all cab files install just fine. I've seen some say that the cabs can be extracted from the exe's but I've been unable to find a way to do this yet.

O.k. Nethack_343.sph.ARM.cab is nethack My version of DBII is an .exe in a file folder with other files titled walls, tiles, etc. so that means that I used the instructions I listed for you earlier only I put it in games rather than accessories. come to think about it I had installed the DBII game before I upgraded or patched anything. I hate to suggest this but you may want to HARD reset your phone install the apps you want then re-install the upgrades... I did this two weeks ago and with only little hassle because I forgot to write down my default settings before I went monkeying around with my wireless data settings... the best way to learn only I wish it weren't on such an expensive training aide. 8D -MalKiE
