Input the following from the home screen:

*#83908390#

This will brings you the following screen:

CE Version: R41fHK

MicroP Version: R16

RF firmware Version:

R4.04 MBE42057-01 P2

Read the first line: R41fHK indicate that my phone version is 41f, HK version.

The known latest version of the HK ROM should be 41j (reported last month by some users on various HK chinese newsgroup)

The HK distributor is now offering a free ROM updates to 41j but you need to bring your phone to their service center. According to what they told me the new firmware should fix some of the satiability problem of the phone such as "No Network", "I hear what you say but you can't hear me at sudden", "Sound distortion in communication” and some of the system freezes problems.

The HK distributor - Touch http://www.bpi.com.hk/touchnew/index.asp

(No, they are not going to make a online downloadable release of the ROM update. For all of you oversea users I suggest you to contact your local dealer or keep asking the Mio at http://www.justmio.com)

I will go there and update my phone in this week or next. Will keep you guys posted!

wow, that's what my phone does to a "T". exactly all of the problems I experience right now. the other odd one is that when I plug my phone in with the provided adapter to recharge it, it will make a very high pitch while its plugged in ... ugh.

Hi bishop,

Referring to this Mio page (in chinese) http://mio.midp.com.tw/bbs_temp.asp

It points out that if you hear high pitch when charge then the power adapter is faulty please contact the service center to replace a new power adapter.

If you have a 5V 1A+ power adapter on hand you could try that on your phone to see if the problem goes away then your original power adapter could be faulty. 5V adapter with current greater then 1A are easy to find, e.g. adapter from my old iPaq 3630, Toshiba 550G, Kodak camera etc, all you need is a little DIY that put the corret plug on it to sult your phone use.

good luck.

doh - I guess I'm going to have to hook that up and try it. would my service center here in the U.S. be the Mitac one in Cali? or would I have to go thru the ebay people that I bought it from (yeah right).

just submitted a ticket for this. double doh. I've never had any problems with stuff before, wouldn't you know that the one time I get defective equipment its from out of the country. :D luckily, I have a pal that likes this phone and is talking about wanting to buy it so if push comes to shove I'll get a fully-working American phone and sell him this not-fully-working Chinese phone..... ok who am I kidding? this phone rocks, even with the problems heheheh

sweet - now we need to find a way to be able to flash the older phones with the newer version.

MikeVirgil - have you had the infamous "you can hear them, but they can't hear you" phone calls, or other bugs that plague earlier versions?

Can we use the tools we already have?

http://msmobiles.com/news.php/1725.html

http://beam.to/spvfiles/Mio8380Upgrade_MJ_4a.rar

there is an updater and tutorial for 8380, will probably work with 8390 as it doesn't say 8380 anywhere, in fact it says Pocketpc so must be universal tool.

Also:

Now if we just have a new ROM dumped to a file...

Joe made this modified ROM so dumping is possible...

probably it works, but with no rom files... maybe we can try asking joe how he did it, instead of waiting him to do it for us...

same bishop's problem: (he says sometimes, in my case it's always) i make a call, everything right; i make the 2nd call and it freezes after 2-3 secs; i mean everything else works, but i can't call anymore (it remains blocked in background); all i can do is restart the phone, switching the airplane mode on-off isn't enough :-#

Wow  it never happened to me, and my ROM is one of the oldest, strange. Maybe because I do not call too often, I rather pick up.
