ive been fence sitting for a little bit.... which leads to my question..

have any of you aussie mpx200 users done the upgrade? and can anyone give any feedback on it.. in terms of network quality, battery life, mms that kinda thing.....

or if its much teh same as everyone else around the world is experiencing...

i think my itch to check it out is growing everyday.... however not being able to go back to teh 1.0.48.75 rom is a little daunting....

cheers

Remember you will be invalidating your warranty if you choose to

try the 2003 rom.

Apart from being able to run a few more apps I prefer the 2002

rom for basic tasks like T9 and remember mms does not work on 2003 :P

Works a swell for me. I prefer the WM2003 instead, seems to run better besides I dun use MMS (gonna wait till it cost the same or close to sms). However, I realised I don't have much storage space left to install many applications.

I live in Melbourne and did the update when it came out.

Aside from the loss of MMS (which I don't use anyway) there is no real key differences for us aussie users.

Signal quality still the same (full in the city of course)

Battery life is definately better.

I'm not sure what Awarner means by T9 does not work on 2003, because it does.

It just has the potential to be a bit more frustrating than 2002 (like the word "where" coming up as number for some reason)

Howerver overall i think that 2003 is better

i always thought anyone could fall back on the generic 2002 rom.

Iuno though. I'm not sure.

I know optus and vodafone (the only carriers of the mpx200 i've seen) won't have a rom for it, because they haven't customized the rom at all on it.

i read somewhere that the generic rom could from a U.S mpx with the 900 band disabled? if that is the case then us aussie users would be receiving some terrible signal. if we flashed back...

there are also other roms floating around, but its a bit hard to gauge where they come from.....

having said that.. 1.0.48.75 has been pretty smooth for me.. i guess, comparing what ive read about other users 2002 builds.. i think its been pretty good to me.....

i guess its just a matter of biting the bullet.. and trying some of those other 2002 roms if im not happy...

What is the 900band better coverage or something. Ive got my phone set to prefered band of 1900, I get fair reception with that. 900 band that much better or something?

I guess Australia's known to use 900/1800, thus everyone's worried about not connecting to a proper 900gsm network. If I'm not wrong, some states in Australia even employs CDMA so 1900 works in some areas as well.

The conclusion about the whole 900mhz band issue i've come is this (and its from experience)

That you either have a phone that is capable with 900mhz or you don't.

Firmware flashes only change the option in phone settings for a "preferred band"

But seeing as australia only really operates on 900mhz You can have the preferred band set to 1900mhz but its not going to find it so It'll use what it can find the strongest (900mhz)

I really haven't seen any reception changes with my MPx200 in any firmware flashes.. be it From Orange branded (My phone comes from the U.K) to Generic to Wm2003

Or be it the AT&T/U.S Model i tried. That one the generic firmware which some people claim opens 900mhz didn't work. There is not the physical transciever in the AT&T models to enable 900mhz. (Yeah I was quite narked off about that purchase :/)

Mine's an AT&T from the states. Works alright. Reception not as good as nokias, full bars in the city, 2 bars in surburbs. If Australia's using strictly 900GSM, then I reckon my phone has proven that it has the hardware capability to receive it. I agree that rom upgrades really only does the labelling. If "you" (the phone) aint got it, pasting a sticker on it will only make it a nicer looking brick!

i havent had any reception problem on optus...

at falls creek on the weekend... where my mates had signal.. i had signal..... when they didnt .. i didnt .. so it didnt really matter.. 0-1 bar of signal all weekend.... no call dropouts...

the battery life however is this abysmal......... i dont think i can get 60mins of talk on a single charge..........

Yeah, the battery life is a big dismay allright! All the awe you'll get when your friends see you with the phone, but you can barely talk much on the phone.... haha ironic

I'm definately hoping that they fix the battery life in the 220 (they should if they know whats good for them :P) but yeah its interesting.

Like I have Mp3's going all day at Uni, and by the end of the day the battery is around 50-60% which is pretty good, but if i get a call that lasts ten minutes or longer at the end of the day it is usually then sitting at about 20-30%.

Which is pretty bad, GPRS eats it too.

i think the battery meter is dodgy.. theres something wrong with it..

the phone will have 3 bars of battery at the end of the day..... come yes time....... i might be able to make 2 20min phone calls.. before my phone completely dies.......... <40mins of talk time.. on 3/4 battery...........

thats rather frustrating....

sometimes the phone will show 3 bars.. and i plug it into the charger.. and it starts charging up from 1 bar.. does anyone else have this problem? i wonder sometimes.. if thats how much battery is really left... hmmm..
