Absolutely Paul, a good indepth review and fair I'm sure.

I was looking for some early feedback from other users from a different viewpoint, maybe for some people they should just hold tight and wait I know and fully appreciate the products still warm from the oven but I am sure a lot of people like me are hoping this will be the one.

When the first SPV came out I was blown away with the idea, possibilities and concepts etc but you have to admit customers end users everyone has been very patient towards the manufacturer HTC and Orange, actually I am going to say loyal even. For me I believe and hope this will be the one, I am dissapointed with buying SPV's getting an 80% finished product and having to make the 20% up by buying other mobiles, I am sure everyone would like to just own 1 mobile again and be happy for a little longer. lets hope the C500 is better supported this time by Orange and Microsoft in terms of software & accessories etc......

i've never owned other mobiles while ive had MS Smartphones, my original SPV and E100 are awesome to be honest, my original SPV STILL impresses people. I really, honestly have never suffered from many (if any) bugs.

Never had any dropped calls, never lost the dictionary (yeh, i know, thats surprised me aswell), had decent ish 2-4 day battery life, hardly crashes (unless its something ive done or when testing things and I mess around with the reg and stuff more than most people), had only one replacement of my SPV (that was cos i knelt on it and bust the screen) and so on.

Guess i'm just one of the lucky ones :)

Anyhoo thats off-topic, however seems like no-one is listening.... C500 topics go in the C500 forum and so..... moved :P

Nooooway! I've still got my original spv (it's my only phone), and tbh i must be an absolute eejut to have put up with all it's bugs and problems. My particular favourite was "Sorry can't answer call" when a call was coming in, closely followed by it's complete inability to have the alarm go off (usually when you really needed it to, such as to help you to wake up to catch a flight). The constant hourglass coming up for no reason at all for sometimes 20 mins made you wonder what would happen if you ever needed to dial 999... oh sorry mate can't dial an ambulance as Billy Gates says i must wait. Why oh, why i've put up with it for so long i'll never know. It's only recently i've found out that it is possible to upgrade the firmware and managed to upgrade it and make it half usable (thanks to this excellent forum :P). Perhaps i just got really unlucky :D Sooo, looking forward to getting a phone that actually works as a phone 1st and PDA 2nd.

You've never upgraded your original SPV?

The updated build for the original SPV really was a huge improvement!

My first impressions a day after moving from the Canary:

1) ring tones sound fine - but standard files on phone don't sound spectacular.

2) 2003 SE seems fast and stable, more like windows than Win Mob 2002

3) BT works (but I am having trouble getting mine to play ball with my laptop - not sure which is being problematic).

4) Internet explorer is now useable - fast to load, doesn't take half an hour to let you click on links, allows you to type in new addresses quickly

5) signal strength no better no worse than before.

6) still no fast forward/rewind within tracks!!! The only update is to allow full screen (landscape) viewing of videos, but that is pretty cool.

I don't think that there are any step changes in the areas you have highlighted, but I think that it has become the phone that it was envisaged that it would become. The key factors really are the superb screen (my various friends' first comments), and the fact that a number of things that detracted from the coolness of my SPV have been eliminated: most importantly it is now silky smooth and fast to navigate screens, it doesn't get stuck for minutes when changing applications or on a difficult internet site, or any of the number of irritating glitches that I found myself apologising for and restarting my Canary when showing a friend its features.

So in summary, I think that most of the serious faults for everyday use have been eliminated. Whereas previously, the SPV has been a specialist phone, requiring some technical ability to get the most out of it, the C500 matches up to (but does not exceed) a SonyEricsson/Nokia phone for everyday features, but it does have a number of extended features that are far improved over SonyEricsson/Nokia phones. So at least it now stands a chance of being used favourably by non-technical consumers, whereas previously it didn't.

On that basis it is not a SonyEricsson/Nokia killer, but it does compete. It is now the phone that I had hoped to have two years ago when I first bought my SPV.

I do highly recommend the jump from a Canary (and it is free, after all).

no wonder you had those bugs, the upgrade to the SPV is essential, its like a whole new phone with 1.6 on it (actually makes the original spv/e100 better than the e200 in my eyes)

Yeah, I agree. This what I expected from the E100, and the E200 as well.

Only had it 12 hours, but so far I'm impressed - especially with the speed of it.

Call quality, and reception are good. Battery is GREAT (compared to my E100 and E200). "Roller joystick" takes getting used to, but I'm getting the hang of it slowly - keep going sideways rather than up/down by mistake, but fat thumbs doesn't help that!

All in all, if it stays stable and doesn't freak out, this will replace my P900 as my day-to-day phone
