HELP: Charging via USB (something weird going on)

OK. So when I got my C500 (Tuesday) I used the mains charger for the initial charge.

Took it to work the next day, used the USB cable to connect to my laptop, and it sync'd first time. Later on I tried to sync with Bluetooth - sync'd first time (thanks to the helpful guide in the forum!). Brilliant.

Decide today to charge the battery, plug in the USB cable, activesync kicks in. Then goes off. Then on, then off. repeat ad infinitum. Won't sync or charge.

Bluetooth is OFF. I've restarted both the laptop and the phone several times. I also get a wee "SIM card" looking icon where the coverage bars usually are - it's not mentioned in the handset guide so don't know what it means.

I've even tried the "Clear Storage" option from another forum post, but all that happens now is that the handset seems to be resetting when I plugin the USB cable.

I'm wondering if it's a voltage issue or something? Anyone got any suggestions?

UPDATE: Now getting an error on the phone "Cannot connect to PC due to an unexpected error in Winsock services. If problem persists, please reset your device". WTF?

Yoinks! I guess you can treat the symptom - don't sync using the USB. If you have bluetooth just use that and plug the phone into the mains. As for the cause? Don't have a clue, unforunately. Hardware fault maybe?

Yeah I think so too Dr Who - only trouble is I don't have the mains charger here!!

For kicks I left it plugged in for a while (with the USB) and the battery won't charge either. I'll try a different cable (first) then head up to the Orange shop and berate a poor assistant ;-)

UPDATE: Uninstalled ActiveSync - plugged in the phone to charge it and got that same "Sim card" icon top right on the phone's screen. Weird. Off to shop now to see what they say.

UPDATE 2: Shop phoned 156, they don't know what the icon is either. How is this possible, sheesh. So I'm stuck with a phone that won't charge, and I can't sync.

Current guess is that the battery is faulty.

Nope, nothing else like that Nick.

Still getting the "Winsock services" error message. Currently on hold with Orange Support (but as this symbol ain't in the manual, I'm doubting they'll be able to help - do they have access to other material? Stuff provided by HTC? Engineering info or something?)

Hope my phone doesn't die before I get this sorted!

Does this only happen with your Laptop???

It could be conceivable that the laptop has a badly designed USB power supply, and cannot generate enough current to charge the phone battery, but even worse, is getting into a state that is causing the USB voltage to go up and down, and this may damage something (like a simcard, etc)

If it does this when plugged into a desktop (generally these can provide more power), or even better plug it into a self powered hub..

Charging batteries can take upto 1A of current, and some USB ports can only supply 200mA. Although this shouldn't cause a problem, since the supply should current limit, meaning the phone just charges slower.. but if badly designed, it will allow the current to go up and down, and this 'transient' effect is a good way to blow things up..

just an idea.. hopefully its fine, but I've had problems with my laptop and my nokia phones..

Sounds like a knackered cable to me. Can you try a different USB-to-mini-USB cable?

It sounds like a knackered cable because I have just such a knackered cable for my iPaq. It doesn't charge off it properly, and ActiveSync is up-and-down like a yo-yo in a lift. On anti-depressants.

Camera Cables dont work, tried them, cos I have two.

Nokia Ngage cables dont work niether.

Both will sync, but not charge !!

Oh, another device that requires special cables !!!!!!!

I have had a lot of trouble with the USB charge....it appears that if you dont have the latest version of ActiveSync installed, or you cant see the Smartphone correctly through it, then it wont charge.

Try it. Walk up to a virgin PC. Plug in USB cable to charge phone. You will get brief flashes as the phone attempts to connect and the disconnects, ad nauseam. No charging.

Then install Activesync. Voila! Charging!

Stupid system. Dont know if there is a way around this (perhaps installing just the USB device drivers?) and havent looked into it too much (might just be me??) as I was pretty disgusted with this (as a result of this "feature" I found myself stranded in Moscow with a dead phone that doesnt accept any other charger. Sweet.)

Enjoy. Doesnt the bleeding edge just ROCK?

i have a slightly different problem. Namely that the phone charges via the supplied USB cable and via the new usb-mini-usb cable I bought today in maplins

But I had bought an XDA charger from O2 shop that comprises a seperate cigar lighter piece with a usb socket and a separate USB to E200 cable.

That setup used to charge the e200 fine - but when I use the usb to mini usb cables between the cigar lighter and the C500 there is no charge?

Anyone have a clue?

At home now. Tried to hook up to my home PC (Dell box). Still the same on.. off.. on .. off and that funny we Sim icon - now accompanied by the "No battery" icon.

Tried the mains charger that I used first - just mains, no USB connection - SAME EFFECT!!

Methinketh the battery is knackered. Another phone call to O. I can't believe NO-ONE knows what that icon means! (I know it's maybe not the problem but still!)

So.

The battery will charge from the mains adaptor. The problem seems to be the cable or the SIM card.

Swapped my old (still active until end of month) sim card into the C500, plugged in the activesync cable and... same error with that "SIM Error" icon.

So, I'll be ordering a replacement cable.

I have been experimenting with various charging methods:

I bought a Fortuna BT GPS and I was hoping to be able to use the car power adapter (USB) that came with it for my C500, but it doesn't work.

The power output on the official mains (3-pin plug) charger that came with the phone reads 5.15V and 1A. The output on the car USB charger reads 5V and 0.85mA

Secondly, the BT GPS also came with a mains charger that you simply plug the USB cable into. This is rated at 5V and 1A and it also won't charge the phone.

Thirdly, the USB hub on my monitor is powered. When I plug the BT GPS into it and power down my PC, but leave the monitor on, it charges. But when I try the same with the C500, it doesn't.

All this makes me think the C500 will only charge via USB if there is a data connection (Active Sync), whether the USB be powered or not.

The only other alternative (at the moment) therefore being the official mains charger that came with the phone. Maybe this has some fancy circuitry that allows the phone to charge?

So it looks like we're going to have to wait for a 'proper' car charger as none of the quick-fixes I have tried work. :)

Look Guys the problem is simple, its software

The charging only works via USB once you have connected active sync

If you connect using a cigar lighter adapter the phone is looking to connect, doesnt, and therefore doesnt charge. Try all the cables you like it wont work!. Its a bug and needs fixing.............

Its a real pain and something that HTC should have sorted before release as for any mobile user in car charging is a must.

Can you explain why the mains charger works? That is connecting to the phone via USB, without AS, and yet seems to charge it. :? The mains lead must surely be wired in a similar way to the USB lead, as it enters the phone via the same USB socket, not a separate DC socket.

I too have the fortuna BT GPS Clip-on, and was puzzled as to why it does't charge the C500..

I've just used a DMM to have a look at what's connected to what etc..

I can see their is a difference..

The fortuna USB connection uses pins 1 and 4 (5 being the shield/outer)..

(Pin 1 being ground, pin 4 being +5v)

The C500 appears to use the shield as ground and pin 4..

So the reason the fortuna setup does not charge the C500 is because it would need to use the shield as ground, instead of Pin 1.

If I'm brave enough, I'll mod my Fortuna car charger, and see if it works..

Stay tuned...

Well, tried modding the fortuna car charger socket.. no difference...

As said, for the PC USB side, it requires the data connection, and the USB to announce itself, then it charges.. I snipped one of the data cables to confirm.. if the device isn't recognised, it won't charge...

I will get a miniUSB socket tomorrow, and then I can see what the mains charger is doing.. perhaps this announces itself to the phone, or uses the 'spare' pin in the miniUSB to activate charging..

Solution to my problem: NEW PHONE!!

Turns out the USB connector got fritzed - tech support guy I phoned to find out what had happened said he was surprised it had sync'd at all. Summat to do with the data side part of the connector being faulty and he reckoned it shouldn't have been passed by the factory.

New phone is working fine, no probs at all.
