SMT5600 Unlock interim solution.

Hold your horses! 5600 SIM unlocking has been solved by our main man Mr. Florin. It should be available for commercial release real soon now (Tuesday?) so don't bother with this Orange ROM reflash business!

Since the C500 thread is turning into a monster, let's make a fresh start.

All of this info relates to the SMT5600 in the USA only. Okay?

Currently all SMT5600's are locked to ATT Wireless and CANNOT be unlocked for other networks. No one has figured out how to unlock them and ATT will NOT unlock the phone for you.

However there is a work around. The first step is to unlock your phone by paying the fee at www.c500-unlock.com and following the instructions there.

Then your phone will boot but it will give a "data crashes" error message and will not function.

At that point you flash (install) the Orange C500 ROM onto your SMT5600. The c500-unlock folks give you links to versions that will either support the 850/1800/1900 PCS bands or the 900/1800/1900 bands. You want the one the first one that supports 850 (only 850 and 1900 bands are used in the US).

This whole process actually is fairly quick - I was up and running within 20 minutes.

What it costs: About $40.

What you lose: Windows Media Player 10 is replaced with Windows Media Player 9 on the device. The phone remains application unlocked (confirmed with the 850 Orange ROM).

What isn't known: whether or not the SMT5600 native ROM can be replaced or if it can be unlocked.

What has been promised: that if the c500-unlock.com folks (aka Florin) get the SMT5600 unlock working you won't have to pay again for an unlock code.

How well does the phone work with T-Mobile (voice and data)? Great.

How well does the phone work with Cingular? Not known yet, but probably just fine.

Why do this? The only reason to do this is if you don't want to use ATT as your provider. Here in the US we can get unlimited GPRS access on T-Mobile for $9.95 a month. It's $24.95 a month for the same thing on ATT. Also ATT's monthly voice plan prices used to be a lot higher but they've come down.

Questions? Comments? I'll revise this post as needed. I think.

That sounds like a good solution. I really don't care about WMP 10. What I want is GPRS class 10 and 850-band for better reception on Cingular. Plus, I think the Orange plug-in is nice.

Can someone confirm 850 band is still working after the flash?

How much longer until they release the sim unlock?

Since I am a AT&T Data customer (SE GC83 EDGE PCMCIA card) and a long time Cingular CA/NV voice plan user and the companies have merged, I wonder if they will give me an unlock code.

That is great news, at least a first step. My question is specifically in regards to Cingular. It sounds like the phone can be used to make/receive calls after it is unlocked and flashed. But does anyone have any experience with using the internet, ie: a MEdia works plan? I would hate to go to all the trouble and expense and find that my 5600 could not access the web.

So has anyone specifically had success with an unlocked reflashed 5600 connecting to the web on Cingular?

Aristobrat,

Since your phone has been unlocked, and you are now using T-mobile. Is the Orange firmware that Florin provided app unlocked, or is that a seperate process that must be completed. I am pretty sure I saw something about that in this forum.

The 850 ROM is app unlocked, don't know about the 900. Edited to reflect this info.

1) I need to confirm that 850 band is working on SMT 5600 after successfully flashing my device. Any ideas how to do this?

2) Base on what I am reading and have read it looks like HTC Typhoon (C500/SP3/SMT5600) has the hardware to use 850 or 900 bands. The ROM dictates which tri-band mode we use (850/1800/1900 or 900/1800/1900). Can someone confirm this?

3) I flashed my imate SP3 (as well) with the 850 band and will see if it works better on Cingular. Can someone confirm how to tell which band I am using?

4) I will setup Cingular with APN: WAP.CINGULAR and let everyone know if all the functions work.

FWIW, I'm using an imate ROM that a buddy of mine was able to put on (from his SP3) by somehow copying it to a miniSD using a terminal program. Nowhere near as easy as downloading/running the Orange ROM update program.

The 850 ROM on my 5600 shows:

4.21.1088 (Build 14217)

Radio A.10.01

ROM operator: 4.1.1.4

manu 1.1.1.91

ms 4.21.14217.0

The other thing is that the camera app keeps refusing to take pictures because there's not enough room. This is on a freshly hard reset machine with nothing installed and 20+ mb in storage (no card yet).

Would love to jibe all this with posted reality but I'm busy obsessing over the election coverage both on TV and on the Internets, so an update to the main post won't happen until tomorrow. (let's not make this a political thread).

If people can help encapsulate the info for me that'd be great. I can't be the only person tired of reading every message in a 150 post thread to find the nugget of relevant info!

FWIW, I've gotten an "not enough memory" error a few times w/ the imate ROM when trying to start the Video Recorder. Rebooting the phone fixed the problem.

I have tried to pay the fee at www.c500-unlock.com but my ATT 5600 IMEI number is rejected by the site. In other words, it doesn't let me pay the fee.

I'm still waiting for the email I sent Florin.

Isn't it sad that we had to wait for months and months for the SMT 5600 to get release, then for it to hit state side and now...wait to get it unlocked.

Then again...the situation could be worse. Worse in a sense that it would suck a$$ if THERE WERE NO way to unlock the SMT 5600. Thanks for giving all of us tech geeks hope to get us by another day...another device until the next big toy comes out.

Boys sorry for delay, but yesterday EVERYBODY emailed me , so i end up WITH HUGE emails, and I'm a human too. Hard to process all in once. PLEASE keep the requests at minimum as I need time to work on AudioVOX too!

ONE REQUEST:

IF you email US requesting the AudioVOX unlock, PLEASE EMAIL ONLY onces AS we read ALL emails and process them 1 bye 1. Yesterday 1 guy SENT me 6 EMAILS requesting the same thing! Imagine if everybody did the same, i end up with HUGE amount of emails, and SEND IMEI ONLY AFTER payment so i can check up easy and process it easier!!

Quick update:

First off - BIG thanks to Florin.

The procedure was quick and painless. Thumbs up!

SHOOT! This is an afterthought...I hope that Florin will have a copy of the SMT 5600's ROM for us. I sure as heck didn't have a way to back it up.

Yeah I probably sent a few emails myself.

Thanks for the workaround florin.

FYI, I'm on Tmobile USA and GPRS/WAP/MMS works great. Exchange Server AUTD works flawlessly. All the blackberry users are hating on me.

I was trying to add a root certificate with Spaddcert.exe and it failed because the phone was applocked and spaddcert.exe isn't signed. Ended up disabling SSL cert checks with certchk.exe.

I've been able to use Sprite Backup successfully on my (still-locked) SMT5600. Try the M2M-signed installer from Sprite's site, or try the Handango trial version.

ATT ROM is much more forgiving when it comes to apps. The ORANGE ROM is very strict. I had no problems running Spritebackup prior to the unlock.
