Hey sonborj,
there are several apps that can do that. One of the best is SPB GPRS Monitor.

Also, does anyone know how I can disconnnect my gprs connection without having to turn on flight mode and then re-enter my phone pin?

Press and hold the Red "End" key for about 3 seconds. This will drop your GPRS connection without using Flight Mode.

If you tap on your signal strength meter on the status bar it will give you the option to connect/disconnect GPRS.
