I love this device but one thing is driving me up the WALL!!!

I have the Jam with an Orange Contract SIM

the 1st email connection to my ISP (BTOpenworld) takes ages but eventually connects, checks and downloads any new email

however, after that, connection and download is flakey - sometimes it is instant, other times i get the 'cannot connect to the ....' message

i have no other devices connecting to my mail box, so it's not POP locked and also, i have an XDAIIs on an O2 contract sim and that is absolutely fine

i am beginning to think its Orange GPRS...........anyone else suffering the same ???

i dont know about orange but read on expansys forums that vodaphone try adn block pop connections that are not their own ie vizazi...

just to add confusion now............

tried the WebIS mail program on the device and it works fine every time............so either Inbox doesn't like something Orange is doing or vice versa.........

certainly looked interesting..........however, i am having problems receiving as well as sending !! it looks like the vodafone thread is concerning the SMTP which i know is something that needs to be changed......

curiously, i have clicked on send and receive 6 times now within inbox and it has connected and finished fine..........crazy !

i think it must be to do with GPRS signal quality.....i live out in the sticks and the wind is blowing a gale....perhaps GPRS is a little tempermental....

...I think you are correct that it is a GPRS issue...I get variable service on Orange and it can affect e-mail send/receive...

thanks for that..........do you suffer from similar symptons on Orange then ??

the only indicator i can see for strength is the main phone meter which i don't think relates to GPRS strength......generally i am on 1-2 bars at home so i guess GPRS is pretty weak too

although, it doesn't explain why WebIS mail works 95% of the time.... :?

...yeah, every now and then it'll hang...I reckon it's during periods of heavy use or weak signal...doesn't happen too often though, so I'm not that bothered...

...how do you find WebIS Mail? I thought it was a bit slow...but I did have it on the SD card...

WebIS is a great app.....the only problem is that i am not bothered really about HTML email and a preview pane is pretty wasted on a small screen anyway.......

it works very well though.............i just prefer the simplicity of inbox (if i could get guaranteed use !)

that's pretty good, bit like blackberry, but it seems to be no real beneficial difference to 'check every 15mins' of inbox......still, the gprs data charges do appear to be less when using smartner.......

Log into (or register for) My Handango GoPass and then click on the link for free software. There are free applications every week for all platforms.

O.k a quicky on Pocket Outlook.

Can't take credit for this as it was found on a U.S PPC forum but the cause of this issue is known.

Pocket Outlook will attempt to setup an SSL connection with any server it sees as SSL capable whether it is properly configured on the server or not, it will do this irrespective of whether "use SSL" is ticked or not. This results in Outlook trying to setup an SSL connection with an incapable server until it times out the connection.

The other cause would be where the server is SSL capable but SSL is blocked by NAT routers via the SMTP/POP ports, this two would result in SSL connection failing and timeout.

The fix is to install a registry editor and create a DWORD key called ForceOffSSL, value=1 in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox, this will disable SSL for all accounts however. SSL via other applications is not affected.

The issue doesn't relate to GPRS at all except perhaps in the NAT blocking taken on the route.

Also if sending some accounts will not let you send unless you use therir smtp server i.e. smtp.btopenworld.com as a security feature.  If using GPRS on Orange try using smtp.orange.co.uk as the send smtp address. This may help sending issues
