Hi All,

Sorry to ask what must seem like a dumb question, But.................

I have a Wireless Dongle (802.11g WLAN USB2.0 Dongle) in my PC running XP Home.

I am trying to configure to run AdHoc (Peer to Peer) as I dont see the point or expense of buying a Router just for my M2000 and PC.

So anyone, can you either point me in the right direction or email me a setup procedure.

I can configure the PC Dongle to show itself as connected. but I havent got a clue where to even begin on the M2000

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Cheers

Shaun

Hi,

I've not got XP Home, however I think the setup procedure is the same as with XP Pro. Now please bear with me as I'm doing the following from memory!

Firstly, if you've not yet done it, download XP Service Pack 2. It contains a lot of new code that will make the network a bit more stable. Not to mention the fixes for a lot of exploits.

Go into control panel, then click Wireless Network Setup Wizard. You might have to put Control Panel into Classic View to see this. Click Next when the wizard starts. Then pick a network name that will be advertised to clients. Then set up encryption - the M2000 will support WPA so pick this as it is a lot more secure. Your choice as to whether the key is generated manually or automatically. Automatic is more secure as the key is randomly generated, but it generates a very long key that is difficult to enter into the M2000.

It's tempting to set no security, however I would not recommend it at all. Especially if there's someone like me nearby  !!!

Click Next. Opt for manually setting up your network as opposed to saving the settings on a flash drive. Then click Next again. Then Click 'Print' to get the necessary settings for the M2000 (such as the key, SSID (network name) and the encryption type).

I'm not 100% sure whether you then need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the connection used for internet access, or whether the wizard does this for you.

Cheers for the help, but the next bit is the dumb bit,

Where in the M2000do you enter the SSID, Key etc, as it seems there are various Network Adaptor settings, Wireless settings LEAP settings etc etc etc

As soon as the M2000 has detected the network, if it's set up correctly you should be asked 'SSIDNAME connects to' - with 2 choices, Internet or Work. It can take a couple of minutes to do this, particularly if the signal strength is low or there is another access point in the vicinity.

When you select Internet, a few seconds later it should then ask you for the key. You then enter the key you have set up, and a few seconds later the icon in the taskbar should change to have a few circles round it. At that point you have an internet connection.

If at that point you still can't get Internet access, you need to go back to the PC, right click on the Wireless connection, Properties and Enable Internet sharing, this will then enable the PC to assign an IP address to the M2000.

You shouldn't need to set any options other than what it asks you when it tries to connect. If you have tried this already, the best thing to do is delete the connection. To do this, open Wireless Manager, click on Tools, then Network Cards, then click and hold the relevant connection. Click Remove Settings. Go back to Wireless Manager, turn the connection off and exit. Then turn it back on again and the network will shortly be detected again.

If you really do get stuck, do a soft reset then try the above again. I've had to do this twice in the last 3 months.
