Having spent years trying to optimise a video for reasonable playback on the smartphone it's great that i can now crank the bit and frame rate up confident it will play back brilliantly! I'm getting good results at around 425kbps. :lol: What are people using for playback and encoding? I've tried a trial of dvd to pocket pc which is ok, i think the quality could be better however. Nice simple one step process tho which is key for me! I've also used windows media encoder to convert a few episodes of 24 (i need to get the aspect ratio sorted). Is there anyother (free, (i'm a poor student :cry: )) software that will rip STRAIGHT from dvd to pocket pc format. I hate the 1)rip vob to hard-disc 2)convert that to avi 3)change to ppc/smartphone format. process Oh and incedentally i'm pretty impressed with battery life. I've caned the thing the last few days, bluetooth on pretty much all the time with videos, internet. Bluetooth was on since 8 this morn and has not been off, and i've been playing with it since lunch time watching videos, installing skins blah blah blah. and i've got 35% charge left. Not entirely sure how to rip straight from DVD yet though, i've just be re-encoding TV programs already Xvid format. Play it back on your PPC with Betaplayer. I encode 400kbs video with 128kbs audio. It will rip a 2hr film in about 2 1/2 hrs. Awesome results. Definately the best for quality and convenience. All the fuctionality to customise and tweak it if you want with the ease of a simple one step process! :lol: Nice one! *edit* and it seems very fast too. at the mo it's encoding family guy at around 40fps! should be done in next to no time! will post my opinions of the quality in a minute. Much better results than when I last did my own a few years ago. A question though, the 5 min trial I did last night, when played using windows media player it did not allow me to slide forward or back the timeline, when my own rips & encode allow me to do this. Is this just a limitation of the trial version? It will be no good if you have to start watching a film from the start everytime. Thanks, Mike. Guest En_croute Posted February 16, 2005 Report Share Posted February 16, 2005 I started on T-Mobile and was with them for 9 years, before moving to O2 (Corporate account 2 years) and Orange (2 years). I've just migrated back to T-Mobile due to the MDA Compact. In London I find no real difference in terms of quality and reliability of signal. Voicemail is free on T-mobile, which is a nice touch - customer service has never been much of an issue - I've had no real problems - except T-Mobile fought to keep me several times, Orange didn't even try. I believe the T-mobile roaming partners vary in prices considerably - In France (a fav destination) some are much more expensive than O2 and Orange - therefore picking a prefered roaming partner, not the strongest can be a wise move. These change, so I'll have to look again before I next go over. Check your best usage locations, home bedroom, home cellar (when calling the electricity board in the dark) and your work with a friend's phone to check the signal strength! :lol: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It takes around 45mins for a 120min film :lol: Just watch the audio streams tho. for some reason I keeo encoding all mine in German or French.lol Cant rember which is English Audio stream. I can encode a 2hr movie in perfect quality at 250Mb in about 1.5hrs. I rip the DVD to hdd using DVD Decrypter(20mins) and then convert to DivX (little over 1hr). Perfect results on Betaplayer. Guest chucky.egg Posted February 23, 2005 Report Share Posted February 23, 2005 I've been doing some testing and I've found that PocketDVD is working best for me - quickk and (fairly) simple, although I routinely get an error from the GUI when trying to set the video quality (but you can just "force" it to what you want and it works out fine Mobile Media Maker has been a nightmare. After the trial (v1.2) worked, and it was very easy to use (if a bit limited in control over the output) I bought it. The full version (v1.3) just won't read the same DVDs that the trial one would, so now I have an effectively useless full product at a cost of about £15. If anyone wants the full version of Mobile Media Maker (on condition that they do not pass it on to anybody else, even if they think it stinks) then PM me... first request gets it.
