New SPV 3G: Pictures

Orange is about to make us happy with another new SPV, the SPV 3G! It's based on the HTC Universal. Because there are soft buttons under the screen, I guess it will be running Windows Mobile 2005 which supports those. As this OS will be released at or after the summer, we might expect this device being released Q3 2005, but that's only speculating.

More info:

Orange's new SPV 3G integrates 2.5G, 3G and Wi-Fi and genuinely places the office in your pocket, with functionality and power similar to a desktop PC.  The device, which is approximately 100 cm2 is like a mini laptop that fits into a pocket – and includes a 520 Mhz Intel processor and the Windows Mobile operating system.

The SPV 3G is also a tri-band terminal, operating on GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 networks, allowing Orange customers to use the device seamlessly in the US, Europe and Asia.

SMS, MMS and e-mails can be typed using the full QWERTY keyboard. The 640 x 480 pixel VGA color touch screen is ideal to display text, images and internet pages. Additional functions include two integrated video and still cameras, and loudspeakers. Once open, the screen can be turned round to turn the mini-laptop into a PDA with a touch-screen.

Like other Pocket PCs, the 3G SPV includes full Office functionality (E-Mail, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), integrated video and music players and equipped with USB and Bluetooth interfaces for synchronization of data with a PC.

As you can see at the pictures below, the design has slightly changed in comparison to the T-mobile MDA IV which is also based on the Universal platorm.

Especially pay attention to the lst one, on the right you can see a 3G PCMCIA adaptor for notebooks 8)

Very nice! Prefer the look of it to the MDA IV too...

Must admit though I'm disappointed because I'd hoped for a 3G Smartphone. Guess that'll be pie in the sky due to size (at least until they no longer have to include 2.5g...).

Sure looks a worthy succesor to my MDA III but as usual I won't be using it on Orange unless they put up a new mast here sometime before its launch.

MDA IV is a nice phone, orange is a very disappointing network and they are not very helpful as you would say and i've got a previous about the network.

so you got any idea when this unit will be out in the market? and who are the other carriers (not Orange)?

thank you

Well, I believe T-Mobile Germany were the first to announce the device and I'd be very surprised if it wasn't subsequently available on T-Mobile UK. Orange are obviously intending to release it too and I expect O2 won't miss the opportunity to add 3G to their XDA range...

Release date for both is touted as in the summer but I personally wouldn't necessarily expect it til the end of the year.
