99 times in 100 I get this IP address:

Hello,

As I said this is the IP address I get 99% of the time. As I've discovered here and elsewhere, it means I've a connection problem. Where do I start though? I think I've tried just about every combination of everything. I can ALWAYS connect to my SSID "HOMENET" but when I get this evil IP, there's no Internet or network connection. I'm not even using network security on the WLAN.

When it works it works really well. I can send 50MB over the network no bother and browse the net easily. Very frustrating. I'd like to be able to just turn it on and use it.

Here's my settings. I hope someone can help:

PC & laptop running ad-hoc mode. Network & ICS work just fine.

PC - 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0 (PCI WLAN card)

Laptop - 192.168.0.2, 255.255.255.0 (USB dongle)

Both the above running Norton IS. I've opened up the range of addresses to permit connections. (I think/I'm sure/I must have done as it occasionally connects)

M200 - Server assigned IP address. Connects to "work". "This connection connects to the Internet"

- I've tried a static IP address such as 192.168.0.3 but this just connects but won't browse Internet or network.

Please, please, please help. I was enjoying my handheld WLAN so much.

Thanks,

GH

PS - if more info is needed, I've got vxIPConfig.

Hi

i also manually enter an ip address in the 'name servers' section of the wifi card settings...........under DNS enter the ip address of your router/server...... i am assuming that your pc (with an address ending in '1') is using something like an ADSL USB modem to connect to the internet ???? therefore, whatever the device is that connects to the internet, enter it's ip address into the DNS server section

i hope it helps

Hi. Thanks very much for that. I hope to God this will fix it. Got up this morning and turned on the network. Three 169 addresses, changed the NIC speed on the PC from Auto to 9Mbs and got a lovely 192 address. Did a soft reset and went back to square one. As I said, I've changed just about every setting and used just about every combination. Really doing my head in . . . . .

You are right - my PC is using an ADSL modem. Are you suggesting that I leave the M2000 to 'Acquire address automatically' but that in the Name Servers page I should enter 192.168.0.1 (Network address manually assigned to PC)?

Thanks again,

GH

Ignore the stuff about name servers, red herring. You aren't even getting that far. 169 indicates a problem getting to your DCHP server. I take it your firewall has DHCP allow set on? Often it's a different setting, as DHCP requests are quite different to any other TCP traffic (you don't have an IP yet, chicken & egg problem, how do you get to the DHCP server? ;-)).

If you statically set your IP (default route and name servers), you will get it working. If you still have problems, then something else is up which was leading to your DCHP problems.

I'd blame wireless security. I've got WEP enabled now, but getting there was tough. If there is a problem with this, you can still "connect" to the other wireless care (you will get signal) but no traffic will flow. That would lead to the 169 address everytime.

Ok, I'll bear that in mind. However, surely if it is connecting properly 'sometimes' then I must be able to get to the DCHP server. What is causing the intermittancy then?

I'm using Norton Internet Security & Firewall. Any ideas where I should be looking to see if DCHP is enabled?

Remember I said that I've not even tried to enable security yet so this shouldn't be part of the issue.

Another thing - I'm using SP2 with the firewall off. However, there's a section in the Advanced Windows Firewall settings (ICS related) for that allows you to tick which services are available to users sharing the internet connection. I found that these had 'unticked' themselves . . . . There are DCHP tick-boxes in there if I remember correctly. I'm sure I've told the Windows Firewall not to monitor either my wireless connection or my Internet connection so surely this wouldn't be the problem.

Any advice on Windows Firewall or Norton or DCHP in general would be appreciated.

Can't try any of this just now as am not home but pointers in the right direction desperately needed in the meantime. I will of course let you all know later how I get on.

Intermittancy is a strange one. I don't trust personal (software) firewalls much, it's all to easy for a rogue app to disable them or hack around without you noticing. When I first saw you mention that, I just thought that your firewall was bouncing up and down.

It could be caused by the phone. I found that when I disabled/enabled WEP in the wireless config, it insisted on enabling LEAP each time, a form of user identification which must be off if you don't use it (it's on the next tab from the wep key stuff). It took me a few soft resets and religious checking of the values to get it going. Things don't seem to like staying the way they were, though, now and then I have to fix it.

You might be having problems if you have both Norton and Windows acting as a firewall. You should only have one, the Norton one is probably better. Switch off the windows one.

I've got windows firewall turned off. I'll try all this stuff later on. Thanks for all your advice.

  • 3 weeks later...

Make sure you dont have ACCESS lists enabled.. one might be blocking your ppc out while letting everything else function fine.. it would be a setting in your router..
