M2000/XDA2S/PDA2K/MDA III ROM question

I've been an Orange customer for years and want an M2000 but have got costly months left on my contract so will prob get one on Ebay rather than waiting 6 months.

Does anyone know if you can get any of the XDAIIs/PDA2K/MDA III and just upgrade to an orange ROM when (IF?) they release a new ROM? I find the Orange Backup/Restore useful when travelling and would have to stick with an M2000 unless you can upgrade from one operator's ROM to another and there seem to be far less M2000's going on Ebay than e.g. XDAIIs's

Or is there any other reason why i might be better sticking to the M2000 anyway - looking through the threads it looks like they're all the same except for what you get bundled with them...

Forget the Orange Back/Restore. The phone has a much better system built in that will dump the current memory to a file on your SD-card or the "Storage" area (which is what it's for!). So, instead of backing up the contacts etc, everything gets backed up. It's called xBackup IIRC. If the phone hard resets, you can bring it back to the backup state really quickly.

You can also backup in the same way using ActiveSync, but if you want to restore you need access to a PC, so it's not as flexible.

If that's your only reason for wanting the Orange ROM, then I wouldn't bother.

Can someone answer the original question? Can you change to any operator's ROM?

My dad's O2 XDAIIs keeps hanging - especially when disconnecting from A.sync

I thought about changing his device over to Orange's ROM (seemingly more stable).

Any ideas?

Thanks Fraser. Still also interested to hear if anyone's had any success/probs switching operator's ROM

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as just running another providers update. This is as the update checks the model details/id of your device, including country of origin, and refuses to go further if a match is not made.

For technical advice that could render your expensive HTC device a paper weigh check out www.xda-developers.com but I warn you, it's complicated stuff for beginners.

Yeah. I see myself as quite an advanced user of "gadgetry" yet I'm not going near ROM cooking until I have the time to spend on it, as well as a fair amount of experience with the phone. It sounds really useful (e.g. installing your apps into ROM so they take up no space on the device), but most of the resources on it are for devices other than the Blue Angel. I'm going to let it mature a little until I actually give it a go!
