I don't think the phone cares about jad files but you can put the jar file anywhere, bring up a file manager on the phone (there's one on the CD if you haven't installed it, or use SmartExplorer or something) and click on the jar file to install it. Once installed, if the jar file is still there, you can delete it. The next time you start the java system on the phone, the applet should be listed.

That kind of sounds like the crappy old java that was apparently a download for the 8380. My old 8390 had an install app in the rom and clicking on a jar file anywhere in storage (I usually just dumped them in the root of the storage card) would fire up that install app. That, in turn, would create the proper directory structure and all that related stuff to make it work within the 8390's java emulator. The 8380 had the emulator on disk or as a download or whatever and no matter where you put the jar file, if you clicked on it, it would give the error you described. I ended up having to put them on a server and giving it an "http://" url in order to install them.

Not that the above really helps, but perhaps you have an antique rom or associations got screwed up and the phone needs to be reset or something?
