M2000 upload error - known to Microsoft

Hi

I have SPV M2000 and think it a good phone (PDA).

I (try to) upload data as much as download. Just as soon as I got the M2000 I noticed that there was a big problem - often the upload would stall at about 16k. Both email and ftp affected - a general upload problem. Appears intermittent (currently not working for me).

Turns out the problem is known to Microsoft, and is a "feature" of Windows Mobile 2003, not present in previous versions:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....elopers_faq.asp

Microsoft says:

"Why do HTTP posts larger than 16K fail on Windows Mobile?

When you move from Windows Mobile 2002 to Windows Mobile platform, HTTP posts larger than 16KB may fail. After posting 16KB worth of data, the transactions may timeout and report an error. To work around this issue, break the data up into small chunks less than 16KB"

It is known to affect other applications as well:

http://www.modaco.com/lofiversion/index.php/t200602.html

So there is no workaround if its impractical to split up files manually. Nice one Microsoft

At least I found this out before I switched from Orange to O2.

If anyone knows of a fix, please pass on the info.

Don't use HTTP to upload then? How about FTP or even SCP (better)?

As I say, its not just http upload - I wish it were. The error also occurs with email attachments and ftp uploads of greater than 16k. The second link I quote is about BonusPrint Mobile software by Cognima - they (the software writers) identified the failure of their product as due to the 16k upload error. This is unlikely to be a complete list.

So it probably can happen with any application that tries to upload more than 16k at a time (16k is not much) :D

I am connecting via GPRS.

Explains a lot! I use VNC/SSH over WiFi a lot and they use a fair bit of data going both ways. No problems at all.

You could try changing the GPRS type setting. It controls the upload/download ratio of your connection. Don't know much about it myself, just saw a thread discussing it a while ago. A search on modaco ought to find it.

Or, there are updates available for the radio stack, they might solve your problem. I looked at them once, seemed overy difficult to install though!

I came across your post when I was looking for solutions to the same problem.

By trial and error I discovered that if I disable spb GPRS monitor on my M2000 I can send emails with attachments again. I sent one today (160kb) then failed again when I re-enabled GPRS monitor.

Hope this helps.
